Chapter 137 - Unforgettable
"Thanks for letting me come over." Elijah sighed, holding Lizzie close to his chest.
Reid was in jail.. He was in jail and there was nothing Elijah could do about. Suffice to say, he was not coping well. It had been a few weeks, Reid had been in trouble..Attacked. All of the above. The Morgans were helping Elijah the best he could.
"Don't worry about it, man. You're family." Morgan ruffled Lizzie's hair.
"I'm so tired." Elijah mumbled.
"You will be." Fleur sighed.
"I can't sleep knowing he's in there.. I mean, the last time I saw him.." Elijah shook his head.
"Hey, his hairs grown out." Fleur nudged him as Hank crawled into the room.
"Oh, hi baby." Elijah smiled softly.
Hank gave a little giggle and waved as Fleur lifted him up,"Jah."
"Oh, do you know how cute you are?" Elijah asked.
Hank reached out to Lizzie, wanting to play.
"Let's get them through to the playroom, hm?" Morgan looked over.
"Yeah- Let's do that." Elijah nodded as he stood up.
"So who's turn is it to go and see him next?" Morgan asked as they walked.
"I don't remember." Elijah shook his head,"But I hope it's me."
"I think so. Garcia has the chart." Fleur chuckled.
"I can't touch him." Elijah sighed,"Last time I tried they got mad at me."
"I'm sorry." Morgan sighed as he opened the playroom door.
"I just miss him, y'know? Being at home.. It's not the same without him." Elijah told him.
"Hey.. He'll hopefully be out soon." Fleur nudged him as she put Hank down.
"I hope so because I don't know how much longer I can take this." Elijah put Lizzie down beside him.
"You've got us to help you." Fleur assured him.
"I know." Elijah sighed.
"Don't struggle yourself. It's not good." Morgan warned.
"I spent most of my life doing things on my own, it's still.. Weird just accepting help."
"Even at your old age." Fleur joked.
"Not as old as your husband." Elijah hummed.
"Hey!" Morgan looked at them.
"Just a fact of life, my friend." Elijah sighed.
"Hey, I'm not that old." Morgan pointed,"Just cause I got a few more years than the two of you."
"You'll be going grey before you know it." Elijah pointed before pausing,"Wait.."
"Wh- Come on man!" Morgan laughed.
"It's just too easy." Elijah smiled softly,"Fleur, you've got so much material to work with here."
"I know." Fleur hummed.
"But, I must stop. I don't want to encourage the children." Не nodded
Hank giggled and tapped his head.. Which had his curls.
"He knows." Fleur laughed.
"Oh, I'm such a good influence." Elijah smirked,"Is your papa bald?"
"Hank, do not answer that." Morgan pointed.
Hank pointed towards Lizzie,"Dada."
"That.. Yeah, that's right." Elijah chuckled softly,"But unlike Dada, she's going to grow hair."
"Man, shut your mouth." Morgan chuckled to Elijah.
"Make me." He shrugged.
"I am not being a referee." Fleur pointed.
"Hank can referee."
"Nope. Let's go." Fleur nudged them out the room.
"Aw, Flo." Morgan laughed.
"Nope." Fleur closed the door.
"Well, we tried." Elijah sighed.
"Not in my house, do it elsewhere."
"..Wanna come over to mine?" Elijah asked.
"Not while your mama in law is there. Diana actually likes me." Morgan chuckled.
"Ah, worth a shot." Elijah hummed.

"A woman?" Fleur asked.
Tara had been to see Reid, do another interview and Reid explained that he remembered a woman in the room with him and Nadie Ramos.
"Yeah, he was very clear about it. He remembered her hair, her painted fingernails." Tara nodded.
"So she killed Nadie Ramos?" Luke looked up.
"Yes. He says he saw her to it." Tara told them.
"Okay, what about Scratch?" Garcia asked.
"He says he remembers her spraying some kind of fine mist in his face." She nodded.
"Which is consistent with Scratchs MO." Emily realised.
"Right! But he does not recall seeing Scratch at all." Tara shook her head.
"You're sure this memory is accurate? You said he manufactured a false memory earlier in the cognitive." Rossi pointed.
"And he is sleep-deprived, which can interfere with memory." JJ added.
"Right- That's true, but that a false memory was directly related to the stress he's currently experiencing. This was different. He was not projecting. Look, in my opinion, this is a credible recollection." Tara sighed.
"Okay, so that could mean that Scratch is manipulating another victim suffering from dissociative identify disorder." Elijah crossed his arms.
"Or he's working with a full fledged accomplice for the first time." Fleur suggested.
"What woman would willingly associate herself with Scratch?" Garcia questioned.
"And why was Scratch risk taking on a partner?" Emily added.
"That's what we need to find out. We'll start by checking all the women in the database we compiled of DID patients." Emily began.
"Wait, how was he?" Garcia looked at her.
"He's, um.. He's having a hard time." Tara sighed.
"We have to get him out of here, you guys." Elijah looked around.
"We will, but right now it's late, and we're no good to him running on fumes. Clear your heads, get some rest if you can, we'll start fresh in the morning." Emily told them all.
*********************************
"This one hits close to home. Stephen's friend from yhe BAP, Sam Bower, was hospitalized yesterday after being poisoned." Emily began as they sat in the conference room.
"What kind of poison?" Fleur asked.
"That's still unknown, but there's a whole team of doctors trying to figure it out." Garcia told her.
"Stephen was with him at the hospital. Inital symptoms mimicked a heart attack. But whatever it is, it was irradiated." Emily explained.
"Wait, an irradiated poison? What's the prognosis?" Tara furrowed her brow.
"Right now, it's wait and see and hope for the best. He's already showing signs of radiation sickness which is all kinds of terrible." Garcia stated.
"Was Stephen contaminated?" Elijah asked.
"His exposure was minimal. They put him through decontamination protocol and he's about to be cleared." Emily pointed.
"What do we know about Sam Bower?" Rossi raised a brow.
"Fifty-four years old. Recently went through an acrimonious divorce about a year ago. He has one adult son who's a sophomore at Emory University in Atlanta." Garcia read out.
"Our biggest suspect pool comes from his work at the BAP. In the field, he was primarily stationed in Russia and he worked in counter-intelligence." Emily explained.
"Could make a lot of enemies in that line of work." Fleur shrugged.
"I hate to raise the possibility, but because of the victim's connection to Stephen, should we consider Scratch?" JJ looked around.
"Scratch always attacks through family. If he'd wanted to get to Walker, he would have gone right for Monica and the kids." Rossi pointed out.
"The KGB and the FSB are both notorious for poisoning enemies of the state." Tara added.
"Absolutely correct. And that goes all the way back to the original, Vladimir Lenin. In 1918, he survived an assassination attempt. When he found out that the bullets used to shoot him were dipped in poison, he became obsessed." Garcia explained.
"He started a lab called the Special Room. It's sole purpose was to weaponize poisonous substances to assassinate people anonymously and that lab still exists todsy. Putin uses it." Emily continued.
"Yes. Litvinenkos 2006 poisoning from polonium-210 is the most famous in recent history, but cyanide, dioxin, thallium, sodium fluoride, those have all been used as murder weapons by Russian operatives." Garcia listed.
"Quite a repertoire." Elijah nodded.
"Those are just the ones that have been identified. Prison breaks down very quickly, so it's incredibly hard to trace, especially when it's masked by other symptoms." Tara explained.
"Bower was primarily involved with cultivating human assets, with an emphasis on the intersection of Russian business graft and political corruption." Emily nodded.
"What was his cover?" Fleur asked.
"He was working as an American Entrepreneur trying to garner Russian capital." Garcia informed her.
"His cover might've been blown." Rossi pointed out.
"Or maybe he was onto something bigger than he realized. Did anybody talk to him bout it?" Luke asked.
"Walker's on it. Let's see what else we can find." Emily nodded.
*********************************
"Dimitri Sobchek isn't looking good for this." Rossi stated as he and Emily walked in.
"He doesn't have a motive and his alibi seems to check out." Emily sighed.
"Okay, well, unfortunately, there's nobody else that crossed paths with Bower that could be a fit for this." Garica shook her head.
"Seems like we're right back where we started." Luke cursed.
"Well, if Sam Bower wasn't targeted specifically, we might be off on our victimology." JJ pointed out,"I mean, this could be broader than just him."
"Stephen said Sam's condition is worsening. His pancreas is compromised and his kidneys are failing." Emily explained.
"Garcia, check hospitals in the Beltway area and see if anyone else has been admitted with heart attack symptoms followed by multiple organ failure." Rossi instructed as he began typing.
"I got two names right off the bat, both of them were admitted a week before Sam Bower and both of them are right here in DC." Garcia looked up.
"Well, that means Sam is the third victim, and we're dealing with a serial killer." Elijah sighed.
*********************************
"We're dealing with an UnSub who's inducing symptoms consistent with a heart attack as a smokescreen for murder by poisoning." Emily began to give the profile.
"The initial symptoms soon give way to the true cause of death, which is an irradiated poison." Rossi told them.
"Poisoning like this is an MO consistent with the Russian government. Except three out of the four victims aren't typical Russian targets." Fleur shook her head.
"This leads us to believe that the Unsub is mimicking a Russian espionage MO in order to obscure their true motive." Tara continued.
"And this UnSub falls into one of three categories." Luke added.
"First, an embittered, federal employee, someone who was fired or forcibly retired or otherwise rendered obsolete." Emily nodded.
"Second, someone who intends to profit off of marketing an antidote to the poison once positively identified." JJ continued.
"This would be an Unsub similar to the perpetrator of the anthrax poisonings right after 9-11." Rossi shook his head.
"And that individual hoped to benefit from selling an anthrax antidote to vulnerable businesses and the federal government." Tara sighed.
"Or this could be an Unsub with a personal grudge, which makes it totally unrelated to the federal government." Elijah hummed.
"Someone who's using a politically charged MO in order to mask a very personal motivation for killing." Fleur nodded.
"Thid unsub shares characteristics with known product tamperers in that he's unconcerned with collateral victims as long as they help obsure his targeted victim." Luke explained.
"Metro police will beef up security in a five block radius encompassing all the federal buildings that are in question." Emily added.
"They will also be advising federal employees to be on the lookout and report any suspicious activities." Luke nodded.
"At this point, the UnSub has no reason to believe that law enforcement is onto him." Rossi mentioned.
"And we've decided not to publicize the attacks. As we all know, publicity around these types of poisoning casings can inspire copycat. Thank you all." Emily finished.
*********************************
Soon enough, they had another victim, so Elijah and JJ were meeting up with Stephen at the hospital.
"Hey, thanks for coming guys. Looks like we've got our fifth victim." Stephen walked to them.
"We're sorry about your friend." Elijah told him.
"Thanks man."
"How are you holding up?" He asked.
"Like a shark, man. I just keep swimming forward." Stephen shrugged.
"Look, we're so glad you're okay." JJ patted his back.
"That makes two of us." Stephen chuckled,"Alex McLean was admitted through the ER."
"Same presenting symptoms as the other victims?" JJ raised a brow.
"Yeah, initially it appeared he'd had a heart attack, but blood tests confirmed the presence of an irradiated toxin in his system." Stephen nodded.
"So it's our Unsub." Elijah nodded.
"Only thing different here, he doesn't have a puncture site on his back." Stephen explained.
"So, how was he poisoned and why the change in MO?" JJ questioned.
"Exactly." Stephen pointed.
"Were his clothes contaminated?" Elijah asked.
"No. How's he doing?" Stephen asked as a nurse walked out.
"We're doing our best to keep him comfortable, but he's starting to show signs of radiation sickness like the kthers." She sighed, "We're still trying to figure out how he was contaminated."
"Is it possible there's an injection site somewhere other than his back?" JJ raised a brow.
"It's possible. I mean, a puncture site could be tiny." She nodded,"But so far we haven't found one."
"The other victims recalled feeling the injection." Elijah mentioned.
"This one didn't. This guy was heading back to his desk when he felt ill." The nurse told them.
"What about his stomach contents? Is there a test or some way to tell if they contain irradiated material?" Stephen asked.
She lead them into a room and looked up some images,"As you can see, both the radio graph and PET scan show radioactive material in his stomach lining. As for the PET scan, we didn't even need to use the radio tracer."
"Because the radiation already in the system functioned as the contrast dye." Stephen nodded.
"That's right. It's in his mouth, his oesophagus, stomach, and the entire length of his gastrointestinal tract." She explained.
"So he ate it." JJ sighed.
"Yeah. We started a gastric emptying study, but that'll take a few days." She nodded.
"He knows the person who poisoned him. That's why he wasn't injected." Stephen realized.
"If every other victim was injected in the back, that makes sense. They were strangers to the Unsub and if they were to turn around, they wouldn't have recognized the assailant." Elijah agreed.
"But if Alex had turned around, he'd have known the UnSub." JJ nodded.
"We gotta find out who he ate lunch with." Stephen pointed.
*********************************
"Our UnSub is Sara McLean, a forty-seven year old registered nurse married to victim number five." Emily sat around the table with the others.
"Looks like she gained access to the irradiated materials through her work in the nuclear medical departments of fifteen different hospitals in the Beltway over the last nine years." Luke continued.
"She's been stockpiling stolen irradiated material for nearly a decade and nobody noticed?" Fleur blinked.
"No, she changed jobs frequently and she didn't steal from every hospital she worked at." JJ shook her head.
"All the hospitals she worked at have been notified." Garcia typed.
"Any of these places have her flagged as a problem?" Elijah raised a brow.
"No. She never even tried. She just quit." Garcia shook her head.
"So far, four of the facilities blamed the missing materials on other employees who were terminated." Emily looked at the file.
"And five of the hospitals, their inventory logs were hacked and altered to disguise the missing irradiated stuffs." Garcia explained.
"This was a long, thought-out, intricate plan. Why murder five people just to kill one husband? Why not get a divorce?" Tara questioned.
"Well, five million dollars. She took out a life insurance policy on her husband six years ago." Fleur shrugged.
"So it's all about the money." Luke nodded
"That and the fact that she was willing to murder several innocent people just to kill one." Rossi added.
"Lack of empathy, guilt and remorse indicates anti-social personality disorder." Emily pointed.
"So, where is she?" Rossi raised a brow.
"If she wants to collect in on his life insurance policy, she can't be in the wind." Luke shook his head.
"Yeah, pretty soon she's gonna have to play the role of shell-shocked greiving wife." JJ shrugged.
"But she doesn't know we're onto her." Elijah realized.
"Yeah, and when we spoke to McLean, he hadn't called her yet." Luke pointed.
"And he's been in a medically-induced coma since then, which would give her time to hit another victim. That makes sense." Tara sighed.
"Yeah, I mean she's not gonna want her husband as her last victim. That would bring too much scrutiny to her." Fleur shook her head.
"She's gonna hit again." Luke put his file down.
"Okay, we'll get her photo out to Metro PD and get out of here." Emily stood up.
*********************************
The Team arrived at the building where Sara was. Everyone on foot while Garcia spoke in comms.
"Okay, Metro's got eyes on our Unsub. She's wearing a dark blue hoodie." She told them.
"I don't got eyes on her." Emily shook her head,"Lewis?"
"Neither do I." Tara shook her head.
"JJ? Eli?" Emily tried.
"I don't see her either." JJ sighed.
"Me neither." Fleur spoke as she looked around.
"Rossi?" Emily looked around.
"Nope."
That's when Emily spotted her,"I've got her."
"Blue hoodie. I've got her." Tara perked up.
"Yeah, so do I." JJ nodded.
"Sara McLean, FBI. Show me your hands." Emily walked to Sara.
Sara froze before quickly grabbing a passing woman and holding a syringe to her neck.
"Sara, let her go!" Fleur pointed her gun.
"She's got a syringe." Tara raised her gun.
"I don't have a clean shot, Eli?" Emily asked.
"Neither do I." Elijah shook his head.
"Lewis?" Fleur sighed.
"Negative." Tara nodded.
"Rossi?..Rossi?" Emily tried.
But that's when the team heard a bang, and Sara fell to the ground. Rossi had come up from behind and shot her. Fleur and Elijah checked on the girl while the rest checked on Sara who was on the floor, dead. It was over.
*********************************
Elijah sighed as he finally arrived back home. It had been a long day and really, he just wanted to see his baby, check on Diana and try to get some sleep. Morgan had texted, Lizzie was still with him. So first, he just needed to check on Diana. The house was.. Dark. That wasn't normal, not when Diana was always awake when he got back.
"Cassie? Are you still here?" Elijah flicked on the light, looking around.
There was nothing. Not even a squeak. It was too out of place. Elijah made his way through to the kitchen where the cats had been fed, so obviously Cassie had been in.
"Diana?" Elijah called out to the silence, getting no response, of course.
But.. He did find something on the counter. A note? Huh..
'Taken Diana out to the movies, she was quite agitated. All good! See you when we come back.
-Cassie.'
Elijah nodded slowly. It was.. Nice that Diana was getting out, even if he wondered how good it would be taking her out this late. Yet Elijah was really too tired to question it. Horatio walked up to Elijah and tilted his head at him.
"Oh, hey buddy." Elijah smiled at him.
Horatio meowed and looked upstairs.
"That's right, we're going to bed now because I don't know.. How many hours I've slept in the past however many months." Elijah nodded.
Horatio meowed once again and ran to the stairs where Rigatoni was.
"Maybe you're more eager for this than me." Elijah hummed as he followed him.
Rigatoni ran to where Diana's room was, scratching at the door.
"She's not in there, baby. She's at the movies." Elijah yawned.
Rigatoni looked up at Elijah before running off.
"I'm too tired to chase you- Look, I'm going to bed." Elijah told them.
Hopefully Diana would come back soon and go straight to bed..Right? Yes. Yes, of course. He left the door unlocked, and he knew Cassie wouldn't leave until Diana was settled. Everything was fine.
