Chapter 132 - The Anti-Terror Squad
"Are you excited for you first play date, Lizzie?" Elijah asked as she scooped her up
Lizzie giggled and clapped her hands.
"You and Hank are going to be best friends." Elijah nodded.
"Have fun." Reid chuckled.
"We will have so much fun." Elijah assured him.
"Be safe." He pointed.
"I'm always safe." Elijah added,"Right, Lizzie?"
Lizzie just looked at Elijah, reaching out for Reid.
"Hey- I'll be safe, you're with me." Elijah told her.
"Tell Morgan I said hi." Reid chuckled.
"I will." Elijah nodded as he walked out.
*********************************
"Okay, behave." Fleur pointed at Hank.
"Come on, Mama. You know he will." Morgan smiled.
"Lizzie and Hank have never had a play date. I'm just worried." Fleur fixed Hank's toys.
"I know she's only little, but Hank knows how to be gentle."
"She's tiny." Fleur pointed.
"So is Marie." Morgan nodded, looking down at Hank,"You'll be gentle with your little cousin, right?"
Hank giggled, reaching up for Morgan.
"Marie is a little sweetheart." Fleur hummed as Marie appeared.
"You are a sweetheart." Morgan agreed as the door knocked.
"They're here." Fleur gasped, running over to the door.
"Flo. Hi." Elijah smiled as they door opened.
"Eli, Lizzie." Fleur smiled.
"We're so excited to be visiting." Elijah waved Lizzie's hand.
"And we are so excited to have you here." Fleur chuckled,"Come on in."
"Don't mind if I do."
"Derek! Eli's here!" Fleur called.
"We're coming." Morgan hummed, walking through with Hank in his arms.
"There's your little cousin." Fleur hummed, looking at Lizzie.
"Ah.." Hank nodded slowly.
"How has Lizzie been?" Fleur asked.
"She's been good. How's Hank?" Elijah tilted his head.
"Teething." Morgan answered.
"Ah, not fun." Elijah shook his head.
"No, not good." Fleur sighed.
"Are you sore, little buddy?" Elijah asked him.
"Come on, I've set up the playroom." Fleur hummed.
"Let's go then."
"What's going on with Reid? Why isn't he over?" Morgan asked ad they walked.
"He said something about working on stuff for his mum, I didn't want to interrupt." Elijah told him,"He says 'Hi' though."
"I miss him." Morgan chuckled.
"He misses you too." Elijah assured him.
"Look at all the toys." Fleur gasped for the babies as she sat down.
"Wow." Elijah hummed.
"Here you go, princess." Fleur handed Lizzie some blocks.
Lizzie held the blocks before.. Almost immediately trying to eat them.
"As expected." Fleur chuckled.
"Let's try not to eat those, baby." Elijah sighed softly.
Hank giggled and took one of Lizzie's blocks, putting it to his own mouth.
"Singe voir, singe faire." Fleur sighed.
"You know what, they're having fun." Morgan pointed.
"That's all that matters." She shrugged.
"It really is." Elijah nodded.
"They're sharing, too." Morgan added.
"Which is very good." Elijah looked between ghem,"We like sharing."
"Sharing is caring." Fleur hummed.
"See? And you were worried about them." Morgan smirked.
"Shut up." Fleur nudged him.
"You're going to have more exciting play dates when you're both big enough to talk." Elijah pointed.
"Can you imagine the nightmare?" Fleur told them.
"I don't think I'm ready for that." Morgan shook his head.
"Not for a year or two." Fleur assured them.
"I'm going to be extra careful about all the things I say in front of them." Elijah nodded.
"You say swear words all the time." Fleur blinked.
"..Starting now." Elijah shrugged.
"Right now?"
"Right now."
"What's your favourite word?" Morgan smirked.
"I'm saying nothing." Elijah shook his head.
"I tried." Morgan chuckled.
"I'm not that stupid." Elijah rolled his eyes.
"Well.." Fleur hummed.
"That is so rude."
Lizzie giggled and looked at Elijah.
"Can you believe they talk about me like that, angel?" Elijah looked down at her.
Hank crawled over to Lizzie, feeling her outfit.
"He loves to touch." Fleur assured him.
"Most babies do." Elijah tilted his head.
"Are you having fun?" Fleur hummed.
Lizzie smiled, kicking her feet.
"I'll take that as a yes." Morvan chuckled.
"I think so too." Elijah nodded.
"Ma.." Hank looked up.
Fleur's head shot up,"Did you two hear that?"
"I did." Elijah nodded,"What are you trying to say buddy?"
"Dada." Hank giggled.
"He's a trickster." Morgan chuckled.
"Oh, you sneaky, little bugger." Elijah shook his head,"You alright, Flo?"
"Hey, I'll take it." Fleur looked at them,"Ma is better than Da."
"It's an improvement." Morgan hummed.
"It is." She kissed Hank's head.
"He'll get it soon." Elijah assured her.
*********************************
"The Bergstrom family was killed 9n their house in Winona, Minnesota last night. Mother, father and little boy all shot execution style." Garcia told them as they sat in the Conference Room.
"Any suspects?" Fleur asked.
"Well, therein lies the mystery. The Bergstrom family was as low risk as they come." Garcia shook her head.
"What about murder, suicide?" Reid raised a brow.
"That was ruled out. There was no murder weapon found at the scene and both Bridget and Scott Bergstrom were shot in their bed." Emily told him.
"But there was a survivor, a teenage daughter." Rossi pointed.
"Yeah, seventeen year old Amanda. She was out past her curfew at the time of the murders." Garcia sighed.
"And she's the one who found the bodies." JJ bit her cheek.
"It almost seems like a hit man scenario." Elijah tilted his head.
"Maybe a mafia retaliation kill. But that doesn't seem likely in Winona, Minnesota." Alvez pointed.
"But it does seem like a revenge killing." Emily shook her head.
"If the UnSub expected to wipe our the entire family, he screwed up big time leaving Amanda alive." Rossi chuckled.
"Unless she had something to do with it." Reid suggested.
"That's a question mark but according to the ME's preliminary report, she can't be the shooter based on alibi and time of deaths." Garcia confirmed.
"On the surface, they were a well-liked family, living a low risk lifestyle." Rossi hummed.
"The daughter Amanda, where is she?" Fleur looked up.
"Protective custody, in case the Unsub sees her as unfinished business." Gacrua answered.
"We good?" Rossi pointed.
"Mhm." Alvez nodded.
"We fly." He clapped.
*********************************
"Bridget and Scott grew up in Winona and have deep ties with the community." Rossi read from the file on the jet.
"Scott was a local distributor of farm equipment, Bridget cut hair in the mall." JJ pointed.
"And yet, they were murdered by a family annihilator." Emily furrowed her brow.
"Sad, but true. The Bergstrom family had their dirty laundry." Garcia nodded.
"Scott developed a vicodin habit after a skiing accident." Elijah nodded.
"So, he could've been in over his head with his dealer." Fleur agreed.
"So, Bridget was having an affair?" JJ raised a brow.
"Yeah, I looked at their financials. She's got a credit card, secret, just in her name, with charges to a motel just outside of town, nothing else." Garcia sighed.
"She might've cut things off, causing him to go off the deep end. Can you give us a name?" Rossi asked.
"Yeah. I'm already into it. You'll have lover boy's ID ASAP." Garcia nodded.
"What about Amanda, the sole survivor? Any motive there?" Reid questioned.
"Deep sigh. I hate that you're asking that and deep sigh again.. I am bound by duty to report the facts. There's a modest insurance policy, seventeen year old Amanda is the beneficiary." Garcia sighed.
Emily looked up from the file,"A hundred thousand dollars."
"That would seem like all the money in the world to a teenager." Alvez nodded.
"People have killed for less." Rossi sighed,"It's an unlikely motive for the daughter, but we can't rule her out."
"Whoever set this UnSub off, he made the whole family pay for it." Reid told them.
"Okay. JJ, Spencer, Emily and Elijah, you go directly to the crime scene. Luke, Fleur, you're with me. We'll set up HQ at the local PD." Rossi instructed.
*********************************
The Agents headed to their places, four of them heading to the house.
"UnSub entered on the second floor, through the cur screen. He had to be physically fit. He knew the house well enough to know this was the room to enter." Emily pointed.
"Then he went straight to the parent's room." Reid continued as they walked through,"He wanted to eliminate the greatest threat first."
"Based on the bullet trajectory, he was standing here, at the foot of the bed when he fired. He wanted to stare at them both before firing." Emily added.
"And that woke Bridget up. She was attempting to flee when the Unsub shot her." Elijah sighed.
"Did he enjoy watching her terror and panic, or was it inexperience on his part?" Reid asked,"Bridget's scream.. Is probably what woke Kevin."
"So, the Unsub walks out into the hallway where Kevin was coming out of his bedroom. And he runs into the Unsub." JJ finished as they began walking down the stirs,"So, it seems this Unsub knew who lived here and where each person slept, implying a personal connection to the victims."
"In spite of home invasion there's no sign of burglary. So he's mission oriented." Reid agreed.
"He's highly organized and sophisticated." Emily added.
"The big question is Amanda. Did he think she was home or did he deliberately strike while she was out?" Reid tilted his head.
"We need to talk to her." Elijah crossed his arms.
*********************************
"Poor kid was so distraught, we took her to the ER. They ended up sedating her. She'll be coming around soon. We've got a deputy stationed outside her room over at County General." The cop told the others as they walked through the station.
"Good. If the Unsub wanted to wipe out the entire family, she could be 9m danger." Rossi nodded,"What about the wife, Bridget? We heard she might have been stepping out on her husband."
"Yeah, that was an open secret. She was seeing Ron Fergusson. They met at the gym. He was a trainer."
"Was? What happened?" Fleur tilted her head.
"Sticky fingers. Ronnie got caught stealing personal items from lockers. They called us over but nobody pressed charges. Just sent him packing." He answered.
"Fergusson sounds like bad news." Rossi nodded.
"He's no altar boy. Couple DUIs and a few assault charges. Bar fights, mostly. But nothing like this. You don't think he's involved with this, do you?" The cop asked.
"Guys got a temper and he likes to drink. That's not a good combo." Fleur shrugged.
"Where's he now?" Rossi raised a brow.
"Living off unemployed just outside town by 1-90." He answered.
"Let's go talk to him." Rossi nodded.
*********************************
Fleur and Emily were sitting with Amanda.
"So what happened?" Fleur asked.
"I was supposed to be home by eleven. That's my curfew. But there was a party, and I stayed out all night." Amanda explained,"My mom.. She was really mad at me. She texted me."
"Sweetie, she wouldn't have stayed mad at you. Okay? Please believe that." Emily assured her.
"She said she was disappointed in me. That's the last text she sent. And I ignored it.." Amanda looked down.
"Teenagers break curfew, it's normal. I'm sure she loved you very much." Fleur nodded.
"Amanda.. We need your help to find whoever did this. We need to ask you some difficult questions, okay?" Emily told her.
"Okay." Amanda nodded slowly.
"Ron Ferguson said you knew about him and your mom. Is that true?" Emily asked.
"Yeah." She sighed.
"He said you threatened to tell your dad about them."
"Well, that was just to keep him away from my mom. I didn't really wanna tell my dad, I didn't want him to know." Amanda shook her head.
"How come? Is it the pills?" Fleur asked.
"Yeah..After my dad broke his leg, he got addicted. And.. It was really bad for a while." Amanda sighed.
"And that's when your mom started having the affair?" Emily asked.
"He was always yelling at everybody. Even Kevin, and my mom and him almost split up." Amanda told them,"Then he worked really hard to get cleaned up. I didn't want to tell him about Ron, because I didn't want him to give up. He was doing NA and everything, and he was doing really good. And then, my mom even thought so. And so, when he got his six month chip, she broke up with Ron."
"How did Ron feel about that?" Fleur leaned forward.
"Okay, I guess. I mean, I'm pretty sure he was already seeing someone else." Amanda shook her head,"Things were just starting to get good again. I thought I was getting my family back. Why did this happen? Why is my family dead?"
After talking to Amanda, the girls headed back to the office where Rossi and Alvez walked in.
"I just got off the phone with Garcia. Fergusson's alibi stands by." Rossi nodded.
"I can't even begin to imagine, her whole family gone in the blink of an eye. She's devastated." Emily sighed.
"Fergusson seems to think that Amanda was some kind of conniving shrew." Alvez mentioned.
"Well, Amanda may have been hostile towards him, but for good reason." She shook her head.
"She wanted her parents to stay together. Typical kid." JJ shrugged,"She was candid about what went on. She was genuinely baffled by who would do this and why."
"Agreed. And that last text from her mom, that one's s gonna haunt her." Emily added.
"What's gonna happen to her now?" Fleur looked up.
"She has an aunt and uncle from Seattle. They flew out today, so it sounds like she'll be going with them." JJ nodded.
"We know Fergussons way too disorganised to pull this off. So, where does that leave us?" Alvez asked.
"The family had their problems, but they were getting bavk on track." JJ shook her head.
"And yet, someone wanted this family dead." Fleur blinked.
"It doesn't make sense that they'd be targeted by a family annihilator." Emily crossed her arms.
"What if it's not about this family?" Rossi suggested,"What if it's just about families?"
"So.. The Bergstroms could be surrogates." JJ nodded slowly.
"Meaning our UnSub will probably strike again." Emily sighed.
*********************************
"We believe this Unsub is a variation of ehat we call a family annihilator." Rossi began the profile.
"The garden variety family annihilator is usually a narcissistic male patriarch, experiencing psychological stress. This caused him to become homicidal and then suicidal." Emily continued.
"His nacicism often manifests as rage directs at a specific family member, prompting him to murder the entire family as an act of punishment or revenge. He then blames the object of his rage for his violent outburst." Reid explained.
"Once the entire family is dead, the patriarchy typically commits or attempts to commit, suicide." Fleur sighed.
"But this Unsub is murdering families that are not his own." Elijah crossed his arms.
"There's a distinct punishment component, to the annihilation that's driving this UnSub." Reid added.
"He's more organized than the typical family annihilator, with greater impulse control and a high level of sophistication." Rossi nodded.
"His sophistication is apparent in the fact that, the object of his rage is deliberately spared rather than murdered." Emily agreed.
"This allows the Unsub the satisfaction of inflicting ongoing psychological pain on the object of his rage." JJ told them.
"We're looking for a male in his late twenties to early thirties. He's mature and highly intelligent." Rossi sighed.
"Amanda Bergstrom and Matthew Doherty may be surrogates for individuals who wronged the Unsub when he himself was an adolescent." Alvez continued.
"Amanda and Matt both attended Pillsbury High School. And we haven't identified any other connection between them or their families." Emily nodded.
"Pay close attention to the faculty and administrators at the high school." Rossi added.
"A lot of the parents are wondering if we should shut down the high school." A cop asked.
"The school itself has not been a scene of violence. Closing it would not deter this unsub." Elijah shook his head.
"We need you to feed up patrols, and warn the public of the ongoing danger." Alvez continued.
"We ask you to encourage the entire Pillsbury High School community to report any support individuals they may encounter. Okay, that's it." Rossi finished.
*********************************
Garcia called the others from her office after hearing a beep.
"What's going on, Garcia?" Rossi answered.
"Do you have any idea how many selfies the average teenager posts on social media on any given day? I'll tell you, before you say anything, so many. And like, the guys too." Garcia sighed.
"Actually, some studies indicate that men take twice as many selfies as women because it's considered an acceptable form of male vanity." Reid mentioned.
"How many pictures of yourself do you really need? And they're basically making the same expression.. Oh my god. Am I officially 'not young'?" Garcia gasped.
"You, ma cherié, are the portrait of everlasting youth." Fleur hummed.
"I'm timeless, alright. Good answer. Okay! Back to my point, I have been drilling into the social media footprint of both of our adolescent survivors." She told them.
"Any connection between Amanda and Matt?" Elijah asked.
"Yes, stay with me while I go around here for a second. So basically, both of their Facebook pages are just an outpouring of love and support from their peers. And it's touching, really, and it's very reassuring for the hope of our species." Garcia nodded.
"What did you mean 'basically'?" Emily raised a brow.
"In between all the wonderfulness, there is a tiny tributary of nasty comments from some of their peers saying that Matt and Amanda got what they deserved." Garcia sighed.
"Well, they're kids. Kids can be cruel and thoughtless." Rossi nodded.
"Right. But we all know that cruelty is sometimes inspired by previous action, which made me wonder what Matt and Amanda might have done to provoke some of their peers for saying these things on their Facebooks." Garcia sighed,"So I looked into their school records and both Matt and Amanda have complaints against them for harassing behaviour."
"They're bullies." Elijah blinked.
"Were they disciplined?" Fleur asked.
"No. To paraphrase the Violent Femmes song, 'nothing went down on their permanent record'." Garcia sighed
"So the victims were also victimisers." Reid realized.
"If the Unsub was bullied himself as a teenager, that could be the original narcissistic wound that's fueling his present-day rage." Emily nodded,"Turning his sutrogate victimisers into victims is the point for our Unsub."
"Bullying leaves lasting scars. Our UnSub could be a teacher or staff member at the school who sees himself as an Avenger of students who are victims of bullying. Someone who punishes bullies when no one else does." Reid suggested.
"From the UnSub's point of view, the bullies themselves are responsible for the violence he's perpetuating against their famileis." Elijah shook his head.
"We need to dig into the backgrounds of teachers and staff at Pillsbury High and identify anyone who was bullies as a kid." Rossi pointed.
"Oh yeah. Digital shovel's already throwing up dirt." Garcia nodded.
"We also need a list of any other known bullies at the school so that we can warn and protect their families." Emily added.
"Oh, here's something. There is a school counselor there named Eric Bakken. Not only is he the school administrator who's in charge of handling bullying complaints from students, but when he was fifteen he was charged with assault. He was arrested. He claimed he was provoked by a long-time bully, but the charges were dropped." Garcia told them.
"Let's get him in here." Emily nodded.
*********************************
"Garcia, we need the records of every student of Pillsbury who filed a bullying complaint against Amanda Bergstrom, Matt Doherty and Austin Settergren." Rossi called her.
"Also anyone who received counselling for being by those students." Emily added.
"Wow. This is a really big pool. I've got twenty-seven names." Garcia hummed.
"Any of those students bullied by all three?" Fleur asked.
"No." Garcia shook her head.
"Like Bakken said, most victims never come forward." Rossi cursed.
"So, I'm seeing the tip of a really big iceberg." Garcia nodded.
"Nobody wants to be a snitch." Alvez nodded.
"Also, bullying is so widespread it's normalized." Emily added.
"That would only amplify the UnSub's feeling of powerlessness." Fleur sighed.
"The pool of suspects is still too big." Rossi sighed.
"Garcia, can you cross check the names you pulled with any mentions on social media of bullying?" Alvez suggested.
"Oh, that is a boss idea. I'm gonna do that right now and.." Garcia typed,"Well, this is interesting. I've pulled up six names from my list and they all belong to a private chat group."
"Some kind of bullying support group?" JJ blinked.
"It's called the Anti-Terror Squad. But, yeah, that's exactly what it is." Garcia nodded.
"It's an apt analogy. Ongoing bullying would feel like terrorism to those experiencing it." Emily pointed.
"They warn each other about which stairwells and bathrooms to avoid on any given day. The walk each other to and from school. That kind of thing." Garcia explained.
"I tell Henry school's a safe place. For these kids, its anything but." JJ sighed.
"Are there any mentions of retribution or punishment, planning?" Elijah asked.
"No. But there's a lot of content here. I'll do a keyword search." Garcia typed,"It'll take a while."
"Okay, so these kids took back some of their power by banding together. They called themselves the Anti-Terror Squad, so they see themselves as righteous." Emily explained.
"The UnSub may be one or all six of these kids. Garcia, I need you to locate their cell phones." Rossi looked up.
"Sure. They're all in the exact same place. All six of them are in a classroom in Pillsbury High." Garcia told him.
*********************************
The team finally had a name for the UnSub. Kyle Ecklund. All the other cellphones had been left behind and the kids were missing.
"Kyle Ecklund has been bullied for a lot of years by a lot of kids. I mean, a lot of kids." Garcia sighed over the phone.
"He unleashed on Austin Settergren. What did Austin do to him?" Elijah asked.
"Let's see.. Yes. Oh! Yes, yes, okay. So, Austin was the ringleader of a particularly horrifying incident that happened a few years back."
"We need to know where it happened." Alvez told her.
"It happened right there at the basketball courts at school." Garcia cursed.
"This place is a maze." Elijah shook his head.
"Garcia, can you guide us?" Fleur suggested.
"Absolutely." Garcia nodded.
Once Garcia directed them to the basketball court, the team rushed there where they found the teens were taped at the wrists.
"You're under arrest! Stand down!" Emily shouted.
"Stay back! I've got a gun, I'll use it." Kyle snapped at her, holding the gun to his friend Zach's side,"You do what you have to do. I'm ready!"
"Kyle, please.." Zach pleaded.
"Shut up." Kyle looked at him.
"Nobody's moving in, Kyle. Nobody's gonna shoot you. You are not in danger." Elijah assured him.
"I know that I am not getting out of here. I am ready!" Kyle told them.
"That's not how this has to go, Kyle." Elijah lowered his gun,"I know what happened here.. I know what Austin did."
Kyle looked up as cops began to surround the team and teens.
"I know they left you out here all night, and you weren't found until the next morning. And nothing happened to the people that did that to you." He bit his cheek.
"You don't care! Nobody does!" Kyle scoffed.
"I do care. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry that happened to you." Elijah told him.
"But nothing ever happens. Mr Bakken is a joke." Kyle shouted,"Eveything he does just screws everything up!"
"I know. You're right. Bakken failed you. Everybody failed you. And they made everything worse. But Kyle, what you're doing now, this makes everything so much worse. And I know you don't want to be responsible for that." Elijah sighed softly,"I know you don't really want to hurt your friends. The only ones who truly understand what it's like. You're better than this."
"Kyle..Please let us go." Zach looked at him.
And.. He did. Kyle let go of Zach, letting him run to the police before dropping his gun. The team quickly rushed over, helping the teens get away and put the cuffs on Kyle.
*********************************
"So, guys, how was that case?" Elijah asked as thye got into the car.
"Stressful." Fleur sighed.
"It brought back some.. Feelings." Elijah nodded.
"But you're okay." Reid assured him.
"So are you." Elijah pointed.
"Hey, I'm okay." Reid nodded.
"And hey, another day without being shot." Elijah hummed.
"Another day with nearly getting shot." Fleur pointed.
"But I didn't get shot." Elijah shrugged.
Yet." Reid chuckled.
"You guys have no faith." Elijah sighed.
"Can you blame us?" Fleur smiled.
"No." He crossed his arms.
"Exactly." She hummed.
"But stil, I don't always gets shot." Elijah reminded them.
"Not always." Reid chuckled.
"I have a greta track record.. Taking into account all my years."
"All of your years." Reid nodded,"How many times have you been shot?"
"Hang on." Elijah pointed and started to think.
"Can you even count on one one?" Fleur teased.
Elijah crossed his hands,"Okay, be quiet."
Fleur laughed,"Knew it."
"You're not so safe yourself, missy." Elijah rolled his eyes.
"Hey- This isn't about me.' Fleur pointed.
"Why not?"
"Because we were talking about you getting shot." Reid hummed.
"You've both been shot." Elijah shrugged.
"Not as much as you." Reid shrugged,"Maybe."
"Well, yeah-" Elijah sighed,"But I don't thin I'm that bad."
"You're not." Reid assured him,"Oh- Here we are."
"Well, as nice as this was, you've got to go." Elijah looked back at Fleur,"Tell Morgan we said hi, yeah?"
"I will. Tell Lizzie I said hello." Fleur smiled.
"We will." Reid hummed.
"Love you guys." Fleur blew them a kiss as she got out the car.
"Love you too, babe." Elijah waved.
Once Fleur left the car, she headed inside to see both her boys.
