Chapter 126 - Inner Beauty
Rossi and Elijah had headed out to visit Joy and her family for Kai's birthday party. Joy unfortunately couldn't make it but both men were currently outside playing with Kai
"It's the ninth inning. Bases are loaded. Do you believe it, sports fans? On the mound is future Hall of Famer Kai Struthers, pitching to his own grandpa. The count is three and two. Will Kai be able to handle the pressure? He winds up, here's the pitch.." Rossi leaned back as Kai threw the ball.
The ball flew right over Rossi's head.
"A perfect strike!" Elijah hurried over, scooping up Kai and throwing him,"The Cubs win! The Cubs win! Yay!"
"Whoo!" Rossi clapped.
"Kai! Now that you've won the World Series, I need you to go pick up all your presents, okay?" Shawn, Joy's husband, nodded as he walked over to them.
"Okay dad. Thanks for the mitt, Grandpa, Uncle Eli." Kai smiled.
"You're welcome." Rossi hummed, kissing Kai's head before he ran off.
Shawn chuckled, talking to Kai in Italian as he ran inside.
"And he even speaks Italian." Elijah pointed.
"Well, that's what happens when an American pianist marries an Italian basketball player." Shawn chuckled.
"Perfecto." Rossi smiled.
"Kai is so happy you two are here, especially since Joy couldn't be." Shawn hummed as they walked into the house.
"Speaking of which, where is that wayward daughter of mine reporting from now?" Rossi asked, picking up a framed photograph of Joy.
"Sierra Leone. She got stuck in Customs. It killed her to miss this party today, but, work, you know?" Shawn sighed.
"Oh, we can relate to that work thing." Elijah nodded.
"Ooh..She would kill me if she saw the house right now. And I'm sorry-" Shawn began.
"No, no, no. I should know better than to come between kids and cake." Rossi shook his head.
That's when rhe doorbell went, Shawn looking at Rossi and Elijah.
"Go ahead, we'll get this." Elijah told him as he grabbed the plates.
Shawn nodded, walking to the door and answering it,"..They're still here, are you okay?"
"Is everything good?" Rossi asked as he walked back in with Elijah.
"Yeah." Shawn moved out the way to reveal a woman,"We have an unexpected guest."
"Hayden." Rossi blinked.
"Hello David." Hayden nodded.
"Who?" Elijah looked between them.
"Grandma!" Kai smiled as he ran to her.
"There's my little lightning bug!" Hayden laughed and picked up Kai.
"I, uh.. I didn't know you were coming." Rossi rubbed the back of his neck.
"Neither did I. Hayden, you told me that you weren't going to come." Shawn sighed.
"I wasn't. When I heard David was coming, I didn't want to intrude." Hayden told him,"And I realized how foolish that was. I suppose we should talk, shouldn't we?"
"Yeah.. We should." Rossi nodded.
"..Come on, Kai." Shawn picked up Kai and walked off with him.
"Twenty-nine years you didn't tell me that I had a daughter." Rossi sighed as they sat down at rhe table.
"You're right." Hayden nodded.
"And when I found out, I called and texted you for a week straight and then never got one reply." Rossi cursed.
"You're right." She shrugged.
"You don't have anything better to say than, you're right?" Rossi sighed.
"No." Hayden shook her head.
"I know we weren't married long, but.. This isn't like you. You never did anything without good reason." Rossi looked at her.
"You are right." Hayden agreed.
"Then what changed now? Why did you decide to show up, now?" Rossi glanced at Elijah.
"Because I knew that I couldn't keep doing this. That we had to get it behind us if we want to be the kind of grandparents that Kai deserves." Hayden looked at Elijah too,"So if you have anything that you need to say, say it now."
Rossi sighed, sitting down,"You never gave me a chance to be a dad, why?"
"Because I always came second with you." She answered.
"That's not true." Rossi shook his head.
"It is true, David. It was always about the job, and you made that very clear. The job came first.. So where would that leave our child?" Hayden asked,"It looks like you got your chance, anyway."
Rossi looked at Elijah,"Still..You could have given me the chance, with Elijah I got lucky."
"And what would you have chosen?" Hayden questioned.
Before Rossi could've answered, Kai ran into the room,"Look, look!"
"Sorry, I tried to keep him in the next room." Shawn sighed.
"Oh, that's alright. Come on, show me what you've got there, darling." Hayden hummed.
Kai pressed a button on his toy cop car and it played his voice 'Stick 'em up.
"Ooh, stick 'em up." Elijah chuckled, raising his hands.
"That's your voice." Hayden chuckled as Rossi's phone rang.
Rossi declined the call,"So, hey, Kai, what else can that hot rod do, huh? Show grandpa."
And then Elijah's phone went.
Elijah looked down at it and sighed,"I've, uh.. I've got to take this."
"..I'll come." Rossi sighed.
Elijah nodded and they walked out into the hall as he answered the phone,"Go ahead, Hotch."
"Sorry to bother you. I just got a call from Sacramento P.D about two Jane Does." Hotch tilted his head.
"What's the connection?" Rossi asked.
"Both were found in the same SRO water reserve tank. Both had their faces slashed repeatedly." Hotch continued.
"Water burial. Female offender?" Elijah raised a brow.
"No. Given the physical strength required, we ruled it out. I need you two to meet us in Sacramento."
Rossi sighed, looking to Elijah,"..Yeah, we'll be there."
"Thank you." Hotch hung up.
Both men hesitantly returned to the other room where Kai was still happily sat with Hayden.
"Listen, uh.. Grandpa and Uncle Eli have to go." Rossi told Kai, kneeling in front of him.
"Already?" Kai pouted.
"Unfortunately, yes." Elijah sighed,"We're a man down and our team needs us."
"We totally get it." Shawn assured them,"You want some cake for the road?"
"No, no, I'm good-" Rossi shook his head.
"Oh, yes, please." Elijah nodded.
"Hey..I love you, kiddo." Rossi kissed Kai's head.
"It's good to see you, David. Maybe we can do this again some other time." Hayden suggested.
Rossi nodded slowly,"Take care, Hayden."
*********************************
"The two Jane Does were found in an SRO reserve water tank in the Oak Park community of Sacramento. That area has a high crime rate, 115% higher than the national average." Reid explained as they sat on the jet.
"Yeah, it's known for its drug usage. And from the track marks on our victims arms, it's apparent they were familiar with a needle." Tara mentioned.
"So this could be a drug deal gone wrong or an angry pimp. And given the surroundings, it's possible these two worked as prostitutes." JJ sighed.
"We should also consider that he's a moral enforcer. He could be a vigilante trying to clean up the streets." Hotch suggested.
"And Oak Park would be a target-rich environment for him." Fleur nodded.
"Alright, when we land, JJ, meet Rossi and Elijah at the crime scene. You two go to the M.Ε." Hotch nodded to Tara and Reid,"And I'll get us two set up at the precinct." He gestured to Fleur and him.
*********************************
"Agent Hotchner." Detective Roberts nodded as he and Hotch walked in.
"Detective." Hotch shook his hand,"This is SSA Howards."
"Thanks for coming out." Roberts sighed.
"Of course." Fleur hummed.
"We've amped up patrols like you suggested." Roberts told him.
"Good. Anything?" Hotch asked.
"Nothing from our units, but we did manage to ID one kf the victims. Debi Leitelt, twenty-two, living on the streets. Ten separate arrests for solicitation and drug possession. Her fingerprints were in the system."
"Yeah. Four of these arrests involve Isaac Henry. We need to talk to him right away." Hotch nodded.
"I'll get on it." Roberts told them.
"Thanks." Fleur hummed.
Roberts walked off and before they really knew it, they managed to locate Isaac Henry and he was now stood in an interrogation room with them.
"You're with Oak Park Police? I don't think so." Henry shook his head.
"I'm Agent Hotchner and this is Agent Howards with the FBI." Hotch responded.
"FBI? Okay- First, I didn't know she was a minor. Second, the sign saying we crossed the state line, it was like this big. No warnings, nothing." Henry shook his head.
"What's your relationship with Debi Leitelt?" Hotch asked.
"I can't say I know a Debi."
"That's not true." Hotch looked down at the fild,"September 3rd, pandering. September 18th, pandering, October 5th, November 14th-"
"Alright, so what?" Henry groaned.
"So you two worked together." Fleur nodded.
"Yeah." He admitted.
"Did you ever get violent with him?" Hotch asked.
"I didn't have to. The drugs took care of that." Henry shook his head,"Why's it the FBI's problem how I treat my girls?"
"It's this departments problem how you treat them. But when they turn up dead, it's ours." Fleur showed a picture of a victim.
"Debi..?" Henry leaned forward, "And I thought she was gonna make it."
"Make it how?" Hotch blinked.
"She.. She wanted out. She got herself clean. I never keep my girls on the street unless they want. Never." Henry explained, tearing up,"God almighty."
"Is that how she normally dressed?" Hotch showed a picture.
"Yeah, why?" He raised a brow.
"Because we found her wearing this." Fleur showed another picture, a completely different outfit from before.
"Oh, yeah.. This? Not her style. Too square." Henry shook his head.
The two then walked out the room, Fleur calling Garcia.
"Hi, it's your friendly, neighborhood, tech analyst." Garcia hummed.
"Garcia, I need you to look up manufacture and purchase history on the dress that Debi Leitelt was found in." Fleur told her.
"The blue dress?" Garcia asked.
"When and where it was purchased and if anywhere locally." Fleur nodded.
"Dress history, I'm on it guys." Garcia hummed.
"Thanks Penny." Fleur hung up.
*********************************
"Garcia said all of the residents checked out. Just your run-of-the-mill 'leave me alone, I'm feeding off my own misery' types." Rossi pointed.
"Well, it's probably less crowded at night, or at least the UnSub draws less attention. Everybody agrees to look the other way." JJ nodded.
"Getting in and out with a body would be difficult, though. Okay, so the question is, this building... Why pick it?" Elijah looked around.
"Well, boys, I think we need to get off this whole 'moral enforcer' theory." JJ looked back at them.
"How come?" Rossi asked.
"Well, a moral enforcer or vigilante would display his murders. He'd want to inspire fear. This UnSub is going the other direction." JJ sighed.
"Ted Bundy, Green River Killer. Each kill was at a separate time, but they both hoarded their victims in one place." Elijah paced beside the tank.
"Mhm. And in their cases committed necrophilia. That's not our Unsub's MO." JJ shook her head.
"But revisting could be." Rossi nodded.
"So he puts them in a tank for safekeeping. Speaks to a certain level of organisation." JJ pointed.
"Only he doesn't think it through. Decomposition would clog the pipes. It's only a matter of time before they're found." Elijah sighed,"So, why this tank, pal? There are thousands of tanks in Sacramento. Why this one?"
"You know there's one other thing this guy shares with Green River. They found the first five victims in roughly the same spot in the river. Ridgeway was forced to find a new disposal site. Our Unsub will do the same."
*********************************
"We believe the Unsub we're looking for is a white male in his late twenties to early thirties." Hotch began the profile.
"He is a surgical sadist, operating on women he finds in and around the recovery community of Oak Park." Reid continued.
"The fact that he's able to earn the trust of the women in this victim pool leads us to believe he may be part of the recovery community himself." Tara told them.
"So he's operating on these women just to kill them?" Roberts asked.
"Death isn't the goal for this UnSub, pain is." Elijah shook his head.
"He cuts these women to inflict physical and physiological scars that won't heal." JJ sighed.
"So who is victim zero?" Roberts raised a brow.
"That brings us to the other part of this Unsub's psychology. He's putting his victims through a transformation, most likely before he starts cutting them. He's dying their hair and changing their clothes." Reid pointed.
"We believe they're surrogates for the woman he believes wronged him." Rossi nodded.
"This woman might be a first victim we haven't found yet. His anger toward her wasn't stated after hurting her." Fleur added.
"We think this woman, victim zero, has had a personal connection with this unsub and finding her will be the key to stopping him. Thank you." Hotch finished.
*********************************
After giving the profile, Elijah and Rossi went into their conference room and looked at the board, trying to make sense of the evidence.
"Maybe victim zero was a junkie who got clean and rejected the Unsub." Elijah began.
"Hm.." Rossi tilted his head.
"Or maybe she fell off the wagon and he was furious because he worked to nurse her back to health." Elijah suggested.
"Hm..Hm?" Rossi typed on his phone, not paying attention to his son.
"Or.. Maybe she was abducted by aliens." Elijah crossed his arms as he turned to look at him.
"Yeah..Maybe." Rossi sighed.
"Okay, this ends now. Let me see." Elijah took Rossi's phone and smiled at the pictures, Kai and Hayden,"He's such a cutie. And.."
"Yeah..Hayden." Rossi looked down
"A lot of water under that bridge between you two, hm?" Elijah asked.
"Too much to get past." He chuckled.
"Hm.. Is she unreasonable?" Elijah asked.
"No."
"Is she selfish?"
"Not in the slightest."
"And.. Remind me, what was her reason for not telling you about Joy?" Elijah asked.
"The job. Our job." Rossi cursed.
"Hm.." Elijah nodded slowly.
"What?" Rossi looked at Elijah,"Eli, what?"
"Okay, look, I'm.. I am on your side, but... I get it." Elijah shrugged.
"Because you don't always have time for Reid when you're home." He nodded.
"No. Because I know you, David Rossi. You told me what you were like back then. Nothing came between you and the job." Elijah explained.
"Yeah, but I might have put it on hold if it meant I got the chance to raise a daughter like Joy." Rossi told him.
"Well, yeah, it's easy to say that now because you know who Joy turned out to be. But thirty years ago, would you have really put your career on hold for diapers and teething and all-night crying fits?" Elijah looked over at him,"Look, Hayden had to make a call, and maybe it was the wrong call, but don't pretend like you don't understand why she made it."
Rossi looked at Elijah once again, shaking his head.
Elijah sighed,"You know I say this out of love, right?"
"Yeah, I do. Thanks." Rossi nudged him.
"Guys, I have weird news and weirder news." Tara told them as she walked in,"The M.E just finished the breakdown of the drugs in our victims. Morphine and meperidine."
"Those are pain management drugs." Elijah blinked.
"Yeah, not exactly the street heroine they were trying to kick." Tara shook her head.
"Then this isn't about addiction. This is about trying to make them feel better after he cuts them." Rossi nodded.
"A sadist wouldn't do that." Elijah pointed.
"Well, that brings me to the weirder. We found this in right check of the third victim." Tara handed over evidence.
"Is that saline?" Rossi furrowed his a brow.
"Yeah, some kind of improvised implant." Tara nodded.
"There were no implants found in the other victims. He's devolving. He's starting to get sloppy." Rossi shook his head.
"It looks like the edges of the plastic have been melted, like a vacuum sealer." Elijah added.
"Yeah, we got Garcia on the case, but do the math. Pain medication plus implant.. Gets you what?" Tara tilted her head.
"He thinks he's helping these women." Elijah sighed.
*********************************
Everyone sat around the table as Hotch spoke,"What have you got, Garcia?"
"I got a hit on a Danielle Steinhardt. She's been missing for the past two days." Garcia told them.
"Does she fit his victimology?" Fleur asked.
"She's blonde, and she's been living at a treatment facility in Oak Park for the past couple of months now. Her brother reported her missing when she didn't check back in." Garcia explained.
"Where are we on the medical conditions that Victim Zero might have had?" Hotch asked.
"Nothing yet. But if you direct me, I can be a much more effective missile." She answered.
"Well, this guys trigger happened recently, so look for car accidents, overdoses, suicides." Tara listed.
"We also think his ideal may have some sort of facial deformity." JJ added.
"Uh..No, still bubkes." Garcia sighed.
Reid quickly stood up, walking to the board,"A neurofibroma. Garcia, look up 'neurofibromatosis'."
"Uh..How do you spell that? Wait- Nevermind, autocorrect has it." Garcia typed.
"Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder taht causes tumors to form on nerve tissue." Reid explained.
"Okay, Garcia, look for women with tumors embedded in the nerves on the right side of their face. That's where all the implants have been." Fleur mentioned.
"Okay, there's a rehabilitation centre that specializes in that at U.C Davis. It's not the rehab we've been talking about. It's the medical kind, but.. Okay. I'm gonna dig into this. I will hit you back when I find a bone, okay? Bye." Garcia hung up.
After a few minutes, Garcia finally called back.
"What do you got, Garcia?" Reid answered.
"I give you Sarah Sherwood, twenty-eight, blonde, and the poor sweetheart suffered with neurofibromatosis." Garcia sent over her information.
"She drowned herself at her parent's house three weeks ago." Rossi looked at the file.
"Roughly around the time the first victim would have gone missing." Elijah added.
"She drowned herself in the worst way I can imagine. Her parents had a pool with a retractable tarp. She held down the remote and she covered herself under it." Garcia sighed.
"She wanted to lock herself in it. That explains why he chooses enclosed bodies of waters for his victims." Reid nodded.
"And puts them in the same dress she wore when she killed herself. The only person who would know that is the one who found the body. Garcia?" Fleur asked.
"Yes, yes, sir, I am on that like brown on super healthy rice." Garcia typed,"Uh.. That would be her boyfriend. He goes by the name of Joseph Berzon. According to police, he was inconsolable."
"But how is Joseph connected to the other victims?" Rossi tilted his head.
"He works for Delivery Dining. They deliver to treatment centers and the SRO where the first two victims were found." Garcia told him.
"That's how he gets access to the pain medication. The worse the rehab centre, the more lax they are with drugs and the easier they are to steal." Reid realized.
"And according to their website, they seal their meals with a vacuum sealer." Garcia added.
"Garcia, where can we find Joseph?" Rossi raised a brow.
"I'm sending you his home and work address." Garcia nodded.
*********************************
The team made it to Joseph's house, and found him and Danielle on the bed.
"Joseph Berzon, step away from Danielle." Rossi pointed his gun.
"No! Stay away!" Joseph shook his head, holding Danielle close to him.
"Joseph, look at her. She needs help." Fleur sighed.
"I'm the only one that can give it to her- You don't understand her." Joseph told them.
"Don't you love Sarah?" Rossi tilted his head.
"Of course, how could you ask me that?" Joseph questioned.
"Then accept that she's gone, Joseph." Fleur scoffed,"All you're doing is hurting innocent women who never wanted you to make this choice for them. That's not Sarah. She never was."
Joseph froze before nodding slowly. He carefully laid Danielle down on the bed before standing up, letting himself get cuffed by Fleur.
"It's okay. We're with the FBI." Rossi ran over to Danielle.
"I'm.. Danielle, right?" She asked slowly.
"Yes.. Danielle. My name is David." Rossi assured her.
"Thank you." Danielle sniffled,"Thank you.."
*********************************
"I can't believe Danielle genuinely began to forget her own name." Fleur sighed as they walked into the house.
"It's scary that can happen, and in such a short time frame." Morgan shook his head.
"I couldn't begin to imagine." Fleur held her head.
"I can't imagine what it would feel like to just.. Start forgetting."
"Do you think Addy's awake with Hank?"
"Well, I told her to make sure she went to sleep but.." Morgan trailed off.
"Addy?" Fleur called out.
"Shh.. He's sleeping."
"Hi cherié." Fleur smiled as she saw Adelaide.
"Hi, Mama." Adelaide hummed.
"How was he?" Fleur walked up.
"He was very good." She nodded.
"And how are you, kiddo?" Morgan nudged her.
"It's nice being back here." Adelaide sighed.
"Makes a change. How is your own place going?" Fleur tilted her head.
"I miss staying with granny and GG."
"So did I when I first moved out." Fleur chuckled.
"You'll get used to it." Morgan assured her.
"You sure you don't mind helping out?" Fleur asked.
"Of course not, I love helping out." Adelaide told her.
"It really helps, plus Hank loves his sister." Morgan hummed.
"And I love Hank." Adelaide smiled.
"I'm gonna head up and see him, hm?" Fleur nodded.
"He'll be happy to see you if he wakes up."
Fleur hummed and walked upstairs to Hanks room, looking into his room. Hank was fast asleep, cuddled up under a blanket.
"Oh my boy.." Fleur smiled.
Hank shifted slightly, opening his eyes and looking up at her.
"Hi, my sweet." Fleur hummed, lifting him up.
Hank babbled, smiling at her.
"Oh, Mama missed you." Fleur kissed his nose.
Hank giggled as he reached out for her.
"You won't believe the day we had." Fleur sat down, Hank in her arms.
Hank kept babbling, his eyes slowly closing.
"There we go.. Back to sleep." Fleur gently swayed.
Eventually Hank did fall back asleep in Fleur's arms. Fleur hummed and kissed his head, playing him back in his cot.
"He still sleeping?" Morgan asked quietly as he walked in.
"He did wake up, but he's back asleep." Fleur turned to him.
"He wanted to see you." Morgan kissed the top of her head.
"I hate not being here all the time." Fleur sighed.
"I know, babygirl." Morgan rubbed her back, "But what you do, it saves lives."
"It could save him one day." Fleur smiled softly.
"It could, it already has."
"I suppose." She nodded.
"You're doing the right thing." Morgan assured her.
Fleur looked at Morgan and held his arm,"Let's go sleep, hm?"
"Yeah, you sound like you need it." Morgan nodded.
"Don't even get me started." Fleur chuckled.
*********************************
"Dad's meeting up with Hayden." Elijah hummed as he sat on the couch.
"Oh? I wonder how that will go." Reid turned to Elijah.
"Me too." Elijah nodded.
"How do you think it'll go?"
"Hayden seemed like.. A reasonable woman." Elijah shook his head,"They'll work something out, for Kai's benefit."
"Hopefully." Reid leaned his head on Elijah.
Elijah rubbed his back,"I like to think I'm better at relationships than my dad."
"I'd like to think so too. I don't want you marrying two more times."
"Well, his last marriage lasted what.. Twenty-four hours? I think I've faired pretty well."
"Very well." Reid chuckled.
"Besides, I think we've figured out that you can't get rid of me that easily." Elijah hummed.
"I've tried." Reid joked.
Elijah gasped,"How could you?"
"I'm joking." Reid laughed.
"I know, you love me too much." Elijah kissed his nose.
"Sometimes." He smirked.
"How would you get about your day without me here?"
"It would be very difficult by now, I've adapted to having you by my side all the time."
"Don't worry, I'm not leaving any time soon." Elijah assured him.
"You better not be." Reid pointed.
"I won't, scouts honor." Elijah winked.
"Did you do boy scouts?" Reid raised a brow.
"Nope." Elijah shook his head.
"So, technically you can't do a scouts honor." He informed him.
"I just did." Elijah shrugged.
"If you say so." He chuckled.
"I do say so." Elijah hugged him.
"Okay, boy scout." Reid laughed.
"Are you ready to head to bed? Or would you rather listen to me for another hour?"
"Hmm..Bed." Reid nodded.
"I like that idea." Elijah stretched as he stood up.
"Then let's go, big guy." Reid hummed.
"Oh, I'm ready." Elijah smiled.
