Chapter 118 - Target Rich

"Derek?" Fleur walked out of Adelaide's room, she had finally finished unpacking it.

"Yeah, Flo?" Morgan turned to her.

"Want to come see Addy's room? It's all ready for her for when she next comes."

"Oh, that I do want to see." Morgan nodded as he walked over.

"Well, what do you think?" Fleur hummed. It was exactly as Addy described how she wanted it.

"It's perfect." Morgan wrapped an arm around her waist.

"You really think?"

"I do."

"Have you.. Noticed anything about me recently?" Fleur asked.

"Noticed anything?" Morgan raised a brow.

"I think I'm gaining weight." She sighed.

"I couldn't tell, honest." Morgan told her.

"You're sure?"

"I'm sure."

Fleur nodded, "Good." She kissed his cheek.

"I would still love you regardless." He hummed.

"Yeah?" Fleur turned to him.

"Yeah, of course." Morgan nodded.

Fleur leaned up and kissed him,"I love you."

"I love you more." Morgan told her.

"Well, I'm gonna go make breakfast, want some?"

"That depends, what are you making?"

"Pancakes."

"Count me in." Morgan smiled.

"And fruit.. And maple syrup." Fleur pointed.

"You had me sold at pancakes." Morgan chuckled.

"Good. I'll head down." Fleur hummed and walked off.

"I'll come with." He nodded.

"Come on then, slow poke." She ran downstairs.

"Slow poke- I'm coming." Morgan ran after her.

Everyone was in the offices, waiting on JJ to come back. She was finally back from maternity leave. Eventually, she did walk in and was immediately greeted by the group who cheered.

"Oh! I missed you guys." JJ laughed as Reid hugged her.

"Oh, we missed you more." Garcia told her.

Rossi handed over some chocolates,"For Will."

"Oh, Will's favourite brand. Thank you, Rossi." JJ hummed.

"And we brought these." Reid moved out the way to reveal books.

"Spence, wow." JJ smiled.

"It's my original set. And I realise that most of this information is most likely on that 'Internet'. But you can never teach old fashioned research habits too soon." Reid pointed.

"How's the little guy doing?" Elijah asked her.

"Oh, he's good. He's sleeping through the night for now at least. Oh, Spence, Eli, I showed him the picture of when you first visited and he started kicking his little legs and he smiled real big." She told them.

"Who wouldn't get excited seeing those bella facce?" Rossi hummed, grabbing Elijah's face.

"Dad." He nudged him.

"I think he wants to see you two." JJ hummed.

"You know, studies have shown that babies begin exhibitung cognisable, non-verbal communication within days of birth." Reid informed her.

"And some things never change." JJ sighed.

"Yeah. And some things do, and because of that, we took the liberty of doing this!" Garcia showed JJ her newly decorated desk,"It's all the pictures you sent while you were away."

"You guys, I love it. It's perfect. Thank you, all of you. Almost all of you." JJ looked up to the office where Fleur and Hotch were.

"They're debriefing." Rossi told her.

"Okay- And this is your Bureau approved bubbly." Garcia handed everyone alcohol-free champagne.

"Cheers." JJ clicked glasses,"Okay, now tell me all about Tara Lewis."

"She is really excited to meet you. I think her exact words after reading your reports were, 'Is JJ as awesome as I think she is?"" Reid recalled.

"I like her already." JJ grinned.

"You did not just have a baby." Fleur gasped as she, Morgan and Hotch walked up.

"Hi." JJ chuckled as she hugged Fleur.

"Welcome back." Hotch hugged her.

"Seriously, talk to me. What is your secret? 'Cause you look good." Morgan told her.

"See these guys? It's from lugging around two boys all day." JJ showed her muscles.

"Oh, baby weightlifting. I would buy that DVD." Garcia smiled.

"Excuse me." Rossi walked off as his phone rang.

"Cider." JJ held glasses out to them.

After a moment, Rossi walked up to Elijah,"Joy is coming."

"Oh- I thought she was in New York." Elijah blinked.

"No, she's here. You want to come?" Rossi sighed.

"Of course." He nodded.

Once in Rossi's office, Joy headed in and began talking.

"Okay, so it started with a long form piece that I'm waiting for Esquire on campus violence against women. After the whole UVA debacle, my editor told me I needed to triple source everything. And that's when I come across this pattern." She told them.

"Missing freshman and sophomores, all women. Four over nine years." Rossi looked at the missing posters.

"They were taken from different East Coast campuses. By the time their families realise that they're missing, the trail is cold. So I put out an alert on campus chat rooms, and this morning I got a call about her." Joy showed her phone to show a girl,"Bahni Desai. Her sister went missing last night from Judy Temple College."

"What do the campus police think?" Elijah raised a brow.

"It hasn't been twenty four hours, so there's nothing they can do." Joy sighed,"Look, it might be a concidence, but I have cried with four families, and I don't want her's to be number five."

"Give me a second." Rossi pointed and walked out.

"So how you been?" Joy crossed her arms.

"Alright, yourself?" Elijah asked.

"Busy- But I'm sure you've been more busy of course."

"I don't even know what counts as busy here anymore." Elijah shook his head.

"Travelling.. Dead people." She chuckled.

"It's weird though, you get used to never being home and being surrounded by.. Well, dead people." He shrugged.

"I don't think I could ever get used to seeing dead bodies."

"I've had nearly eleven years to get used to it." Elijah shook his head,"But there are still times where even I need to take a minute."

"Of course." Joy nodded.

"So.. How's Kai?" Elijah raised a brow.

"He's doing great. He actually asked about you." She hummed.

"He did?" He blinked.

"Yeah." Joy chuckled,"Uncle Eli."

Elijah smiled,"Tell him we need to schedule another visit."

"When you have some vacation days lined up, give me a call."

"I'm sure I've got some left over."

"You have my number, don't you?" Joy asked.

"I.. Should do." Elijah nodded slowly.

"Then shoot me a text one day." Joy hummed.

"I will." He nodded.

*********************************

Rossi had taken the case with Hotch, to which he decided to take on. So Elijah and Rossi stayed with Joy while Fleur, Morgan and Reid were out to talk to the victims families.

"Four cases over nine years. How come this wasn't on out radar?" Morgan asked.

"Because the disappearances were in different states with different MO's." Rossi sighed.

"The first missing woman was Kathy Miller from NYU in 2006." Reid nodded

"So what's the plan once we land on campus?" Fleur asked.

"Track Bahni's movements. Campus police checked her room. She's not there. They taped it off for you." Hotch told her.

"What about her cell phone?" Reid leaned forward.

"It just pinged in her room overnight." Garcia responded.

"Strange for millennials to go anywhere without a phone." JJ sighed.

"No credit card activity. I've confirmed with all ticket agencies. She didn't take a boat, bus, blimp or plane last night." Garcia hummed,"Oh! Dean's office just us her file from Judy Temple College. It looks like.. Oh dear."

"Looks like what?" Elijah blinked.

"She voluntarily withdrew." Garcia blinked.

After hearing that, Rossi and Elijah walked back out to Joy who was comforting Bahni's sister.

"Dad, Eli, this is Bahni's sister, Aasia." Joy turned to them.

"Thank you for coming." Rossi nodded.

"Thank you for helping. We were supposed to meet in D.C, this morning. After two hours of Bahni's mobile going to voicemail, I called the campus police." Aasai sighed.

"The phone is in the room, but she isn't. There's something else we need to talk about. Did she.. Tell you she was withdrawing from school?" Elijah crossed his arms.

"She was?" Joy blinked.

"She got a B-plus on her midterm. She thought her world was over." Aasia shook her head.

"Aasia, you never told me that." Joy turned to her.

"She picked up extra-credit work and she was going to withdraw her request on Monday. This, whatever's happening, it isnt related to that." Aasia insisted,"I need you to believe me."

"I do." Joy sighed.

"Excuse me." Aasia walked off.

Rossi hesitated before he stood in front of his kids,"I have to say something. You're not going to like hearing it. Sometimes emotion can cloud our judgement in an investigation. We see smoke, but there's no fire."

"So, you don't think this is related to the other cases?" Joy asked.

"I'm not saying that.. Yet. Us three are going to take this as far as it will go." He pointed.

*********************************

Morgan, Fleur and Reid were interviewing one of Bahni's friends who was with her the night before, Paddy.

"I was with her last night. She was fine." She sighed.

"Any idea why she left her cell phone in the room?" Morgan asked.

"We didn't take purses, and we didn't have pockets in our skirts." Paddy shook her head.

"Okay, walk us through the night. You guys were studying before you went out?" Reid tilted his head.

"Yeah. Um..I knew about this party. She didn't want to go." She sighed.

"So, it wasn't 'epic'?" Reid asked.

"It was most decidedly not epic." Paddy nodded

"Did you two come back to the dorm?" Morgan raised a brow.

"No. I made her stay." Paddy admitted.

"Why?" Fleur blinked.

"There was this tennis guy that I'd been trading tweets with. He said he'd show up, but the he was late, and the later it got, the more I drank." She sighed.

"How much did you have?" Reid leaned forward.

"Her, I don't know, me, a lot. Until.. He arrived and Bahni decided to go." Paddy nodded slowly.

"Did anyone walk out after her, maybe try to escort her?" Fleur tilted her head.

"Not that I saw.." Paddy sniffled,"God, it's my fault, isn't it?"

"No, it's not. But there's still a way you can help us." Morgan assured her.

"Anything. Name it."

"Where was the party?" Morgan asked.

*********************************

The team watched security footage that showed a man waiting for and then following after Bahni before her disappearance.

"Okay, so if he watched and waited to take Bahni, we should be looking at offenders with precursor crimes of stalking and peeping." Morgan pointed.

"Greater metro area creeps coming up." Garcia typed.

"He's patient and organized. He'll have a plan for when she sobers up and becomes non-compliant." Hotch nodded.

"He'll isolate her so it's easier to be dependent on him." Rossi realised.

"She's the most important thing in the world to him right now." Elijah crossed his arms.

"We need to get him to see her as a person." Hotch sighed.

They then headed out to make a statement to the press.

"The FBI is working to locate this woman, nineteen year old sophomore, Bahni Desai. She went missing last night from Judy Temple College." Rossi began.

"We're also trying to identify this man." JJ pointed towards the CCTV footage,"We believe he has information that will help us locate Bahni."

A reporter raised her hand,"Isn't this man also a suspect?"

"Right now he's a person of interest, strictly a witness." JJ shook her head.

"Did he abduct her? Why isn't he being considered a threat?" She continued.

"Our focus right now is on Bahni, which is why her sister Aasia would like to say a few words." Fleur nodded.

Aasia stepped forward,"All my parents want, all I want, is to see Bahni again soon. Please, call the hotline number if you can help. When she arrived at school last year, we had the most wonderful reunion. She always knows how to make everyone around her smile, especially children. Bahni, if you can hear me, we love you very much and we'll never stop searching for you until we have you back in our arms.."

*********************************

"Anyone see Joy?" Rossi walked into the Conference Room.

"Not for a while. Why?" Garcia looked up at him.

"She asked about Sam's rap sheet. At the time, I didn't think it through. But she is a journalist." Rossi sighed.

"And Sam's a lead." Elijah realized.

"Pull him up, Garcia." Rossi told her.

"Okay, Sam Burnett. No record. Just his address and his date on birth." Garcia shook her head.

"He's about the same age as Joy." Hotch added.

"That's it." Rossi pointed,"Where did he go to college?"

"He dropped out of NYU in 2006." Garcia typed.

"The same time Kathy Miller went missing." Reid looked up

"Wait- What are we saying?" Fleur asked,"Burnett did not take Bahni."

"But he could be an Unsub. When he talked about Bahni's abduction, he wasn't concerned, he was jealous." JJ pointed.

"We have two separate Unsubs in a target rich environment." Hotch crossed his arms.

"And Joy's going to confront the one we know. Garcia, ping her phone." Rossi instructed.

"She's in the same alley that Bahni was last seen." Garcia sighed.

"Now ping Sam's." He pointed.

When Garcia pinged Sam's phone, it was practically right behind Joy...

*********************************

The team quickly pulled up at Joy's location, finding her forced against the wall by Sam.

"We were just talking, Agents." Sam held his hands up.

"Sam Burnett, you're under arrest." Rossi grabbed him.

"For what?" He winced.

"Assault. You two, I've got him." JJ took Sam and walked off.

"What were you thinking?" Rossi pointed at Joy.

"That's him, dad. I know it is." Joy pointed.

"What were you thinking?" Rossi pointed at Joy.

"That's him, dad. I know it is." Joy pointed.

"Then you definitely don't follow him down an alley!" Rossi scoffed,"You're a parent, for God's sake. If Kai did something this- There's no other word for it than this stupid, how would you feel?"

Elijah looked between Rosis and Joy, looking at her face,"There's more to this than Kathy Miller, isn't there?"

Joy took a shaky breath,"The week before she disappeared, I went to a frat party. I got drunk, I walked home alone.. And some guy in a ski mask grabbed me and dragged me into the bushes." She cried,"And I screamed and screamed. And some voice in my head told me that I needed to get up because no one was coming to rescue me. And so I fought and I scratched at him and I jabbed my thumb into his eye, then he ran off. But you know what I didn't do?'

"You didn't report it." Rossi realised.

"At college they talk about drunk girls a certain way. Like it's their fault if they get attacked. It's so unfair.. Especially when a week later, another girl goes missing because I didn't tell anyone."

Rossi cupped her face,"It's not the same guy."

"Dad.." She sobbed.

"The guy who hurt Kathy was organized. He had a place to take her. The dirtbag who attacked you was impulsive- He hadn't thought that far ahead." Elijah shook his head.

"Well, none of this is helping Bahni." Joy shook her head.

"Unless, Sam gave you some new details." Rossi pointed.

Joy got out her phone and played the recording between them.

"It's how he said it." Joy sighed.

"He got off toying with you." Rossi nodded.

"I really thought I had more than this." Joy looked down at her phone.

"Go back to the beginning, right before he admits to seeing everything." JJ told her.

Joy did so and they listened to it again.

"He paused when you asked about the car. It's the only time he did that. Everything else he answered without hesitation." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Maybe he avoided the question because he didn't want to give you a clue." Rossi called Garcia,"Penelope, we need you to pull up the security cameras again. Run registrations on all vehicles on or around the campus after midnight."

*********************************

"I'm looking at the vehicles from earlier and there's nothing extraordinary about them or their owners." Garcia shook her head.

"Any of them belong to Judy Temple students?" Fleur asked.

"Two, but we already know they went home for the weekend." She told her.

"Some of Sam Burnett's story is true. The Unsub likely walked off with his arm around Bahni, and it's highly doubtful that he would have taken the chance to hurt her in public." Morgan pointed.

"Yeah, but then they just disappeared." Garcia blinked.

"Well, because he took her away, likely in a vehicle that fit in. Campus security should have a list of vehicles that are authorised to drive onto campus. Cross check those against your lists." Reid explained.

"Checking registrations.." Garcia typed,"There's a car. It looks like it's in the neighborhood. It delivers Chinese food to the campus."

"Does Bahni order from them?" Reid asked.

"All the flipping time." She nodded.

"Who's it registered to?"

"Twenty-two year old Tom Larson. No criminal record."

"Try juvenile offenses." Fleur pointed.

"Oh- Bingo. Lots of misdemeanor, peeping offenses in his teens. It doesn't look like a coincidence. And every time he got busted, he'd end up in the hospital with bruises and broken bones." Garcia told them.

"Probably an abusive father. Was child services ever called?" Hotch asked.

"Looks like the mom explained it away, until she committed suicide years ago." She sighed.

"You want to bet that she received the brunt of his abuse?" Morgan tilted his head.

"Oh, no takers on that bet. The elder Larson had a heart attack last year. According to medical records, uh, the son is the primary caregiver." Garcia informed them.

"Caring for his own father who beat him, it was only a matter of time before he snapped." Reid realised.

"We don't have two monsters, we have three." Morgan shook his head.

"Garcia, send the address to Rossi, Elijah and JJ." Hotch nodded.

*********************************

After saving Bahni from Tom Larson and getting her home safe, they managed to pin down three of the murders on Sam Burnett.

"We tied him to the murder of three of the victims, including Kathy Miller." Rossi told Joy,"Look, we need to talk."

"Yeah, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I went off to meet him. You're right it was.. It was stupid and reckless." Joy sighed.

"That's not what I meant. What you survived in college is trauma. It doesn't just go away because we did good for somebody else. You need to talk to someone. Like your old man, maybe. Or your brother." Rossi told her,"Because we won't lecture. We'll just listen."

Joy sighed before her phone rang,"It's my editor.. This is Joy Rossi..Yeah. Just send me the latest version." She hung up.

"Joy.. Rossi?" Rossi blinked.

"I didn't get to use the name Rossi growing up, so I thought I'd try a new by line.. What do you think?" Joy asked.

"I think I need to get a subscription to Esquire." Rossi told her.

Rossi chuckled and hugged her, pulling Elijah into the hug.

"I love you guys." Elijah sighed.

"I love you both too." Rossi hummed.

"We really need to talk more." Elijah shook his head.

"Hey, you should come down with Elijah when you've got some holidays, Dad." Joy pointed, pulling away.

"When he's got holidays- He's got more days than anyone." Elijah pointed.

"Well, you should take them off." Joy chuckled.

"I'll see what I can do." Rossi nodded.
