Chapter 112 - Beyond Borders
"Help me with this crossword, please?" Fleur leaned over to Elijah's desk.
"What's the clue?" Elijah raised a brow.
"Quality of Kratos?" Fleur blinked.
"Can you repeat that in English?" He furrowed his brow.
"Did I slip into French?" Fleur blinked, reading the paper again.
"No, I just have no clue what you said." Elijah spun around in his chair.
"Spencer." Fleur showed him the paper.
"It's Ire." Reid hummed.
"Of course it is." Elijah sighed.
"Thank you." Fleur wrote it down.
"You're welcome." Reid smiled.
"You got a smart guy, I got one that throws himself through doors." Fleur looked at Elijah.
"My guy's the best." Elijah agreed.
"What's going on?" Morgan walked in.
"Reid helped Flo with a crossword because neither of us are smart enough for them." Elijah answered.
"Got a point." Fleur hummed.
"Come on, Eli. You and Fleur are both smart in your own ways." Reid assured him.
"Like?" Fleur turned to him.
"Well, Flo, you've got a lot of street smarts and are great at thinking on your feet." He pointed.
"Aw, thanks Spence." Fleur gasped.
"And? What about me?" Elijah asked.
"You're smart in ways I shall not be naming." Reid cleared his throat
"Oh, you dirty boy." Elijah smirked.
"Ew." Garcia walked in, covering her ears,"Case, we have a case. I am not listening to your dirtiness."
"We didn't even say anything bad." Elijah pointed.
"I could sense your dirty thoughts." Garcia pointed.
"I think we all could." Morgan chuckled.
"Come on. Fleur stood up.
"I'm coming." Elijah sighed.
Once in the Conference Room, they saw Cruz.
"Our UnSubs eluded both domestic and international teams, and we're not about to let him get away with it again. As you all remember.." Cruz turned to the screen,"Last April the Isaacs family was killed in Florida, and the Everetts were killed in Aruba the year before that."
"Both families were found twenty-four hours after they were taken. Each family member had been strangled and their bodies were dumped in a remote area. The trails went xold." Hotch continued.
"All signs pointed to the Everetts being hod first victims. Because of the hands on, intimate nature of the kills, we thought it was personal." Lambert hummed.
"And we built on that theory with the Isaacs in Florida, but to no avail." Hotch shook his head.
"Now that he's moved internationally again, it's time to rethink the motive. It's clear he gets off on hunting American families when they're on vacation." Garret sighed.
"Just over eight hours ago, he abducted the Sullivans from Barbados." Cruz pointed, showing security footage on screen.
"It's like he's establishing a clear pattern. He started overseas, came back to the States, and now he's gone to another country again." Morgan crossed his arms.
"The month of April has some sort of significance to him." Reid added.
"Maybe it's easy hunting season. All the kills were during spring break vacations." Lambert suggested.
"It takes guts and skill to snatch a whole family, but you wouldn't know by watching him." Kate shook her head.
"The higher the risk, the lower his heart rate. A true sociopath." Rossi nodded.
"And the family's too tired form a long day of travel to see the ruse." JJ sighed.
"And the UnSubs probably too charismatic to set off any instinctual alarms." Morgan realised.
"I need both domestic and international teams working together on this. If our Unsub sticks to his pattern, he'll kill the Sullivans by sunrise." Cruz told them.
"Kate, you, Reid and Howards go to the Sullivans house in Fairtax County. Look for links between them and the other victims. We need to establish whether he's stalking them at their homes before they take their trips. The rest of us will head to Barbados." Hotch ordered.
"Sir, we don't have a lot of time. Please tell me Monty's on this with us." Garcia turned to him.
"Yes, he's on his way. Agent Simmons will be with us." Garett nodded.
Garcia smiled before walking off.
"So our jet or yours?" Garret turned to Rossi.
"We'll flip for it." Rossi hummed.
*********************************
The did actually flip for it, ending up with the International plane. So they were pulling up to the plane in the SUVs. Garret and Lambert had picked up Simmons on the way.
"Hey, hey, haven't seen you guys in a while." Simmons hummed as he approached.
"Matt Simmons." Morgan chuckled,"Passing ships man, how you doing?"
"Good." Matt smiled as he hugged them.
"Hi." JJ hummed.
"Morgan, you married yet?" Matt asked.
"Working on it, man." Morgan sighed.
"So, uh, how old's the baby now?" Elijah tilted his head.
"Which one? He's quite the breeder." Lambert chuckled.
"Which one? He's quite the breeder." Lambert chuckled.
"I have, uh, four under three." Simmons answered.
"Wow." Elijah blew a raspberry.
"Last round was twins." He added.
"Oh my god. Your wife is a saint." JJ gasped.
"That she is." Simmons nodded.
Finally, they all headed inside the plane. Soon enough, they were in the air.
"So, you know what I thought was weird about Florida is that there were no drugs found in any of the victims systems, which is strange, because I figured that's how he was controlling them." JJ took a drink of her coffee.
"Yeah, I thought the same one Aruba. Nothing showed up in the tox screen. But their metabolism could have burnt through rohypnol in a few hours." Simmons shook his head.
"True. It's easy, cheap, efficient." Elijah agreed.
"He used some kind of leather ligature to best them and finish the job. Our guess what a belt. It must mean something to him." Morgan pointed.
"Well, that weapon versus bare hands certainly prolongs the strangulation. He gets off on controlling their life's until the very end." Lambert sighed.
"He could have kept hunting in Florida. It's a target-rich environment for his type." Garret commented.
"Right. But he didn't." Rossi shook his head.
"Instead he chose Barbados, of all places. There's more couples that families on vacation there. He's making things harder for himself." Garret pointed.
"And us. There's not much going on here evidence wise." Rossi sighed.
"Except those ball caps. First two times he wore orange, now he's switched to blue."
"Bonjour, crime fighters times two. I did some digging on the Sullivans and they just got their passports. This trip was their first stamp." Garcia sighed as she appeared on screen.
"Inexperienced travellers tend to make the easiest targets because they're isolated, they're stressed from customs, sometimes there's even a language barrier. And all those unfamiliar sights and sounds add to their culture shock." Lambert explained.
"Yeah, that's why airports are the biggest trap. A few creature comforts, ATMS, restaurants, they trick you into letting your guard down. There are predators waiting to strike." Matt fold them.
"Yeah, well, I ran their specs through VICAP and Interpol again, and the only things that are dinging are the two cases we already know about." Garcia shook her head.
"Garcia, coordinate with the State Department on passport activity in Barbados and cross that with Aruba from two years ago." Hotch ordered.
"Copy, copy." Garcia hummed as she hung up.
*********************************
Kate, Reid and Fleur had been in the victims house for a while now.
"Updated alarm system, no dog doors or hidden points of entry. Garage is even detached. I don't think the UnSub infiltrated this house without them knowing. Is this all the stuff you got from Florida?" Fleur walked in.
"Well, all the families took the same cautious approach while traveling." Reid glanced at a file.
"So, he didn't stalk them from home, he did it from Barbados." Kate realised,"Probably tracked the flights on his phone, saw the delays and knew that he'd found his victims type."
"Yeah, he obviously has a clear ideal. Statistically, annihilators are fathers who've lost or killed their own families and are trying to replace their role in the unit." Reid explained.
"Okay, so let's see what type of father he wants to be. My guess is the M.E report will support your theory." Fleur sighed.
*********************************
The rest of the team soon pulled up outside of the U.S embassy and walked towards the building.
"It's good to see you." Garret hummed as a man walked over.
"Jack, how you been?" The man shook Garrets hand.
"Great, thanks. Of course you know Lambert and Simmons. Fitz is the embassy's regional security officer. Fitz, this is the team I was telling you about. SSAs Hotchner, Rossi, Morgan, Deans and Jareau." Garret introduced them all," They're experts in family annihilators and worked this offender's case last year."
"Well, I hate that it takes another abduction to bring out all the big guns, but I'm glad you're here. Come on in, I'll show you around." He nodded.
The team nodded, quickly following Fitz inside the embassy building.
"The Ambassador wants to keep this quiet." Fitz told them.
"Cause he doesn't want the host government to be embarrassed." Lambert pointed.
"Ten thousand Americans victimised overseas each year and the States worried about diplomacy." Matt added.
"In this case, it's island economics. Anything taht stops money from coming in gets swept under the rug." Garret explained,"Other places, challenges can be more political."
"If we thought other families were in danger, I'd argue that we make a statement, but I think this guy has what he wants." Hotch told them.
"What about the van?" Simmons asked.
"Tags were stolen. Registered to a rotting VW bus." Fitz answered.
"Of course." He sighed
"And the make, model and colour all match a popular service van on the island. They're a dime a dozen." Fitz shook his head.
"And what about the driver? Are there a lot of Americans driving shuttles around here?" JJ raised a brow.
"Half the service industry are expats who work here all winter. Problem is, most people don't report their presence to the embassy so we have no record of knowing who's even here." Garret told her.
"Well, he's been here long enough to know his way around back roads. This kind of ruse isn't easy to pull off at night." Elijah sighed.
"Our technical analysts are tracking passport activity over the past six months." Rossi nodded.
"That's a good start." Fitz walked off.
"Morgan, you and JJ should head to the abduction site." Hotch instructed.
"Simmons, go ahead and join them." Garret nodded.
"And I'm gonna run leads in town. You want to come?" Hotch looked to Lambert.
"Sounds good." Lambert hummed.
"Great." Hotch nodded as they left.
"And then there were three." Rossi hummed, turning to Elijah and Garret,"It seems like you have a great team here."
"So do you." Garret patted his back before checking his watch,"If the pattern holds, we've only got twelve hours to find them alive."
*********************************
"Thanks Garcia." Rossi hung up,"The dynamic duo narrowed it down to one thousand Americans who visited Aruba and Barbados, but they need our help. Want to search visas?"
"Americans don't need a visa here." Garret shook his head.
"Well, damn.. Eli, where's your head?" Rossi turned to him.
"Well, this guy needs privacy and he's got a lot of it here. There's hundreds of acres of undeveloped and isolated land." Elijah pointed to the map.
"So he knows the area well enough to cover his tracks." Rossi agreed.
*********************************
"This is interesting. The first kills in Aruba were less organized and lacked the intense torture we saw in Florida with the Issacs." Reid told the girls.
"Well, maybe it's because he had a year in-between kills to perfect his game." Fleur suggested.
"It could be, but what if it's more than that. What if his rage in Florida was some sort of statement?" Reid asked.
"Like what?' Kate raised a brow.
"I'm gonna punish the Americans on American soil." He sighed.
"So something bad happened to him in Florida." Fleur nodded.
"And I think it must have involved water." Reid pointed.
"Why would you say that?" Kate asked.
"All the fathers showed signs on near drowning, but we never figured out why." Reid answered.
*********************************
They had found a SUV at the local docks, a couple of water bottles inside.
"Looks like he used Rohypnol, like you said. Colourless, odourless, tasteless." JJ sighed.
"That makes them easier to control." Simmons nodded.
"There's not a lot of foot traffic out here, even during the day. We could try a canvass, but my guess is he was probably to quick to be spotted." Morgan pointed.
"And he left his keys in the cupholder. So what do you want to bet.." Simmons twisted the key to check the fuel tank,"Tank's almost full."
"Thirty miles from the airport to here. He filled up the night he took the Sullivans." JJ sighed.
"Hey." Garcia hummed as they called her.
"Hey babygirl." Morgan hummed.
"Hey, handsome. I was just about to call you." Garcia told him.
"Well, ladies first." Morgan chuckled.
"And a gent, don't forget." She added.
"How you doing, Monty?" Morgan asked.
"Hey, Morgan." Monty nodded.
"So Monty, Wonderperson, found about a dozen license plates that scumbag had put on the van." Garcia began.
"He stole a few off of rental cars and took the rest off of old cars at a repair shop near the airport." Monty continued.
"Was there a gas station?" Morgan asked.
"Indeed." He hummed.
"Security footage?"
"You know it."
"We're sending it to your phones now." Garcia typed.
"There he is." Elijah hummed as they watched the footage on Morgan's phone,"Didn't see the camera, did you?"
"Or he's just a cocky son of a bitch." Morgan sighed.
"Hey, Monty, can you run this guy's mug through facial recognition?" Simmons asked.
"It's going now, but processing eight million images even with a bonded T1 line, it could take a while." Monty bit his cheek.
"We don't have a while." Simmons sighed.
Meanwhile with the others, they had called the team over in Barbados.
"We're hitting a dead end with unsolved cases involving water." Reid told them.
"I've been thinking we should look at solved cases." Garret pointed,"This Unsub isn't old enough to be a hardened criminal. But his countermeasures and his confidence feel like he's had a lot of practice."
"So what if he were a budding psychopath? We should check homicides going back to his teens." Hotch agreed.
"Lily, cross with juvenile custody worldwide. And check which countries have blue and orange in their flag. Or sports teams. There's a reason he chose those colours. We just haven't found it yet." Garret instructed.
"You don't think he's American?" Fleur asked.
"He has some sort of connection to the States. That's why he's attacking American families. Now that we feel he may have committed murder before, it's doubtful that State would grant him a passport." He explained.
"What country would?' Reid raised a brow.
"Plenty." Lambert sighed.
"Wait, but if he was guilty of something horrific before, wouldn't he still be locked up?" Kate asked.
"Not necessarily. Remember when Natalee Holloway disappeared?" Lambert raised a brow.
"It'll be ten years ago in May." Reid recalled.
"The prime suspect was never put away, despite our profile. He was free. And five years later, to the day, he abducted and killed another young woman in Peru." She sighed.
"Van der Sloot went dormant, but his underlying homicidal behavior grew stronger. That definitely could've happened here." Reid pointed.
"That means the Everetts in Aruba reignited his devious fantasies. So if they weren't his first victims, who wete?" Kate questioned.
"His own family." Hotch realised,"Narrow it down to sons who killed their fathers."
"That's it." Garret nodded as Lambert typed.
"What?" Rossi peered over his shoulder.
"Look at this. The only sign of outward frustration. He nearly gets hit by a car. Right here. Instead of yelling at the driver, he holds it in. Then he has a passive-aggressive moment. He taps the centre of his head like this." Garret gestured as he explained,"That's a gesture and it means stupid or crazy in Dutch culture."
"Oranje. The Netherlands soccer team. That's why he's wearing blue and orange hats." Rossi realised.
"He's not American. Lily." Garret pointed.
"Already on it." Lambert typed.
*********************************
After managing to stop the Unsub and rescue the family from his boat, they headed back to the BAU where Rossi, Elijah and Garret were talking in his office.
"I mean, talk about a total surprise. I'm not just a dad, I'm a grandad." Rossi hummed.
"Well, congratulations. That's fantastic." Garret chuckled.
"So, how's Karen?" Rossi asked.
"She's great." Garret nodded as Rossi poured them a drink, handing Elijah a lemonade.
"You know, I've got to tell you, it's admirable taht you two have made it work." Rossi shook his head.
"Ooh, what's your secret?" Elijah asked, taking a sip of his drink.
"Simple, really. I know I'm a better person with her beside me." Garret nodded,"And she knows that I won't stop doing everything I can to make rhe world a safer place for our kids to grow up in."
"And how are the kids?" Rossi raised a brow.
"Ryan just got into the Academy."
"No kidding?"
"Yeah.. It's just all I ever wanted is to protect my children from all we've seen, and now Ryan will be right in the line of fire." Garret sighed.
"Well, he's learned from the best." Rossi told him.
"How are the Sullivans?" Garret asked as Hotch and Lambert walked in.
"They're better." Hotch nodded.
"So, how many of these do you think we've solved?" Rossi looked around.
"Mm, enough for another best-seller?" Elijah hummed.
"These are the endings we want." Hotch pointed.
"Amen to that." Garret sighed.
"Cheers." Lambert smiled as they clinked their glasses.
Eventually, after finishing their drinks, the others left and watched as the families reunited.. Leaving Rossi and Elijah in the office.
"You okay, figlio?" Rossi looked at him.
"Tired, I guess but.. I think so." Elijah nodded slowly.
Rossi hesitated before he went into a drawer, bringing out an envelope.
"You got post?" Elijah raised a brow
"No, you did." Rossi held it out.
"Who's it from?" Elijah questioned as he looked over the envelope.
"Gideon."
"Excuse me?"
"It's.. It was found in Gideon's cabin. Addressed to you."
"..Have you read it?" Elijah looked up at him.
"No, not yet. But just wanted to be here when you open it." Rossi sighed.
Elijah sighed as he opened up the envelope and pulled out the letter inside, hesitantly reading it over. It read:
'Dear Elijah, I was going to send this letter however I didn't know how you would react about it. I know we have our differences and I have not been the nicest to you. But Spencer has recently came to me and expressed his feelings towards you, so I shall put away my feelings towards you for the sake of Spencer. I do truly hope we can sort out our issues and I am sorry, truly. J.G.'
Elijah sat the letter down on Rossi's desk and put his head in his hands. He'd spent nearly eight years just so.. Angry at Gideon and now he didn't know how to feel.
"Can I.. Have a read?" Rossi asked.
"Sure." Elijah swallowed,"It's.. It's nothing bad."
Rossi took the letter and skimmed over it,"It doesn't have a date."
"It said Reid recently spoke to him so.. It had to have been made before or right after he left." Elijah shook his head,"Reid never got to speak to him after."
Rossi sighed and rubbed Elijah's arm,"You're a good kid."
"I just wanted him to like me.. I wanted to have that relationship that he and Reid had." Elijah admitted slowly,"I'm just glad I get to have it with you."
"Not everyone can be winners. But you're a winner because you got me."
Elijah smiled at him,"You gave me something that I always wanted growing up.. А relationship with my father."
"I'm glad I got to have that with you." Rossi hummed.
"And hey, I ended up with a whole second family out of it.. Like, buy one get three free."
"How about I drive you home, hm?"
"I think I'd like that." Elijah nodded.
"Come on, it's pretty late."
"I'll race you to the car, old man."
"Old man?" Rossi gasped.
"Going to deny it?" Elijah smirked.
"I'm.. Older but not old." He pointed.
"Whatever you say." Elijah chuckled.
