Chapter 108 - Hashtag
"Have a nice flight, Mama." Fleur hummed, hanging up the phone to her mother's in the kitchen.
"They get there okay?" Morgan asked as he walked in.
"Yeah, they're about to board soon." Fleur nodded, "How was your jog?"
"Good, but I think Beau enjoyed it more than I did." Morgan chuckled softly.
"Were you running laps around daddy? I bet you were." Fleur hummed, petting Beau.
Beau panted, jumping up on Fleur as his tail wagged.
"Down boy, you don't wanna hurt yourself." Fleur chuckled.
Beau got down, running between Morgan's legs and out of the room.
"You okay?" Fleur looked up at Morgan.
"Just doing some thinking." Morgan hummed, putting his hands on her waist.
"That's dangerous." Fleur hummed.
"Is that so?" Morgan asked.
"Sometimes." Fleur smiled.
"Fine, my thoughts will remain a secret then." Morgan shrugged.
"No- Come on, you can't do that to me." Fleur gasped.
"Yes, I can." Morgan teased, "And I will."
"Well, I'm going to tell Elijah." Fleur shrugged.
"What? That I'm keeping secrets?"
"Yes."
"He already knows." Morgan told her.
Fleur cursed,"I'll get it out of him."
"Have fun with that." Morgan winked.
*********************************
After arriving at the BAU, Fleur headed over to Elijah's desk, waiting for him. Elijah stretched as he walked over, coffee in hand.
"You know something." Fleur pointed at him.
"I do?" He blinked.
"Morgan's keeping something from me." She pointed.
"And.. I'm supposed to know?" Elijah questioned.
"You do know. He told you."
Elijah furrowed his brow, scratching his head,"I don't.. Think so?"
"So he's lied, to make sure I wouldn't ask you." Fleur nodded slowly.
"Mhm, that must be it." Elijah agreed,"Morgan hasn't told me any secret."
"Okay.. Promise?" Fleur held up her pinky.
"I promise." Elijah locked their pinkies together.
"Fine." Fleur groaned.
"Guys, we've got a case." JJ called to them as she walked past.
"Coming." Fleur nodded.
Elijah sighed, putting his arm around Fleur as they both walked into the Conference Room together.
Garcia clicked her remote and some photos appeared on screen, showing the most recent case,"Local teenager, Tara Harris, was found murdered inside her home last night."
"Looks like a blitz blow to the forehead, then the Unsub stabbed Tara before slitting her throat." JJ looked up from the file.
"And he didn't stop there. He used her phone to upload that image to all of her social media sites." Hotch added.
"He staged a selfie?" Morgan raised a brow.
"Tara took a lot of her own selfies. Maybe the Unsubs recreating the images to mock her." Reid suggested.
"Maybe he's got something against vanity." Elijah added.
"Which could mean he has self-image problems." Fleur mentioned.
"He feels ignored in his everyday life." Reid nodded.
"What if it was Tara that ignored him?" Rossi suggested.
"This could be his retribution for rejection." Elijah agreed.
"All I know is if this guys into selfies, we've got a larger problem on our hands. They're all the rage these days." Garcia sighed.
"I know. Even CNN does a column dedicated to selfies of the week." JJ shook her head.
"It's all I can do to keep Meg from posting them. I mean, don't people understand the dangers of putting their lives put there like that for everyone to see?" Kate shrugged.
"If everybody's doing it, the Unsub only has to look to the internet for a sea of potential new victims." Reid told them.
"Unless Tara was just a one off. This could be personal. What makes you think it'll go serial?" Morgan asked.
"Show him." Hotch nodded to Garcia.
Garcia sighed and showed the full tweet that went with the selfie. 'Fear me.'
"He issues a taunt." Morgan sighed.
"He thinks he's just getting started." Hotch nodded.
"The post has got viral. It's already received over a million hits and retweets." Garcia sighed.
"That's exactly what the UnSub wants." Fleur nodded.
"The 'fear me' taunt certainly speaks to the killer's arrogance." JJ pointed.
"Yeah, or vulnerable narcissism. He feels like crap so he boasts to the world how great he is." Kate mentioned.
"Recent studies have linked the excessive taking of selfies to narcissism, addiction, even mental illnesses." Reid informed them,"Maybe the Unsub had a misconstrued bond with Tara."
"He wouldn't be the only one. I've gone over her subscriber numbers. She has over 200,000 followers." Garcia blew a raspberry
"Isn't that a lot for a sixteen year old?" Rossi raised a brow.
"Yeah, it's massive. She was on her way to iCelebrity status." Garcia pointed.
"Yeah, what was she doing to get all those followers?" Kate asked.
"She posted pictures daily, videos daily, mostly high energy, long-winded rants. She knew how to toe the line between right and raunchy."
"Maybe the Unsub was attracted to her." Elijah shrugged,"Stabbing is usually a substitute for sex."
"Well, let's not rule out jealousy. There's an unfortunate number of people who attach their self worth to the amount of friends following them online." Fleur pointed out.
"I don't think the blow to the mirror was coincidental. I think she was looking at herself when she was attacked." Hotch told them, looking up from the file.
"He's commenting on her vanity, which explains the selfie. He's making a statement." Rossi pointed.
"He wants people to look at him instead of themselves. He feels ignorwd." Reid nodded.
"Well, he's got our attention now, so let's make him regret it." Kate hummed.
"Let's go." Hotch stood up.
*********************************
"The initial blitz merely stunned her. The Unsub punctured the victim's abdomen before lacerating her throat." The M.Ε told them.
"What did he use to cut her?" Rossi asked.
"A jagged piece of mirror. A shard from the one in her bedroom, I assume." She pulled over a tray of broken glass.
"He must've worn gloves otherwise his blood would have been at the scene." Fleur tilted her head.
"So, did the Unsub think on the fly, or did he plan on using the mirror in the attack?" Rossi raised a brow.
"Seems more like a weapon of opportunity." Kate agreed.
"But killing with a symbol of vanity, that's intentional." Rossi pointed.
"Maybe he brought a different weapon, saw the mirror and couldn't resist." Kate shrugged.
"This killing was planned. Why deviate at the last minute?" Rossi asked.
"I don't think he's as organised as he seems." Fleur shook her head,"Impulsivity could point to inexperience."
"Or maturity. The Unsub could be letting his emotions dictate his actions." Rossi nodded.
"Yeah. Too cocky for his own good." Kate hummed.
"That's when they usually make mistakes." Rossi reminded them.
*********************************
"So the UnSub is putting these images on people's selfies." JJ pointed towards the screen, showing two more people.
"Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain. A devilish version of him, anyway. Interesting choice. The Unsub must have scholarly ambitions, or at the very least, he's educated." Reid explained.
"Well, the story on the internet is that I'd you get a picture like this one, you're on the killers hitlist." JJ pointed.
"Yeah, it's creepypasta." Garcia commented before looking up at everyone's confused faces,"Uh, it's internet slang. It's a shared story that expands as others contribute to the lore."
"Sounds like an urban legend." Fleur drank her soda.
"Yeah, or a basterdized Bloody Mary." Elijah added.
"Same principle just with a new technological twist." JJ ate a fry.
"So, the altered photos appear random. How do we figure out who the Unsub is targeting next?" Kate questioned.
"It's a long shot but if the victimology is personal, the next victim may be someone connected to Tara." Reid pointed,"We should check to see if anyone of her friends or family received doctored images."
"In the meantime, can you figure out who photoshopped these images?" Rossi looked to Garcia.
"Not yet. Whoever this guy is, he's posting to the users own accounts." Garcia typed.
"Well, even someone with minimal hacking skills can get around a password." Morgan shook his head.
"The original photos had GPS tags, but the modified ones are missing that metadata. Maybe he's using a cloned cell phone?" Garcia suggested.
"The Unsub's trying to make a name for himself." Reid furrowed his brow.
"Oh, 'Selfie Killer' is already all over the social media sites, and some late night talk show hosts have even taken on the mantle." Garcia chuckled.
"Yeah, well, an ice bucket challenge this isn't. So what's his end game?" Kate asked.
"Fame." Fleur shrugged
"Fear." JJ spoke.
"Twins." Fleur smiled.
"Probably both. He's a sadist and he's enjoying the panic he's creating." Hotch nodded.
*********************************
"We believe that the man we're looking for is a narcissistic sadist who is blitzing his victims with weapons of opportunity." Hotch began the profile,"He sees these weapons as symbols of his victims' vanity."
"First the mirror, then nails in the form of a hashtag. It's a popular method of topic tagging on social media sites. These murders are a statement." Morgan continued.
"Based on the organization and sophistication of the crimes, we put this Unsub in his late thirties to early forties." Hotch added.
"This guys trying to make a name for himself by building off the Internet legend of the Mirror Man." Fleur nodded.
"It's a form of ostension, when someone does the acts described in a story in order to bring them to life. We've seen it before with the poisoning of Halloween candy and most recently with the Slenderman case in Wisconsin earlier this year." Reid explained.
"That's the case where two girls stabbed their best friend because they believed in doing so, they would become proxies of a mystical being." Kate pointed.
"Alos known as 'legend tripping'. The Unsub assumes the mantle of an established story, then brings it to life in his own way by recreating the circumstances described in that lore." Rossi told them.
"In one version, the Mirror Man kills by showing you your reflection. In another, he spears you with his razor sharp fingernails if you capture his reflection in a picture, hence the nail gun." JJ crossed her arms.
"He's becoming immortal as the legends and story grows, fuelling him to only act again." Elijah sighed.
"This UnSub probably lacks in professional and social graces and is most likely subservient to his peers, although he doesn't view it that way." Reid shrugged.
"His need for attention probably stems from abandonment in early childhood." JJ nodded.
"Oh! And he's tech proficient. Among other things, he photoshopped this image onto the victims photos." Garcia showed the pictures with the 'Mirror Man' face.
"His distortion of Mark Twain as the face of the Mirror Man, it's very important." Kate pointed.
"William Faulkner described Mark Twain as the father of American literature, and this UnSub sees himself similarly. He wants to become the forefather of modern lore." Reid added.
"He'll be monitoring web traffic, media sites and chat rooms as he enjoys the panic and hysteria created by his crimes." Hotch finished.
*********************************
Garcia had managed to narrow someone down, Connor Holt. The team had an address so some of them headed there straight away. As they burst in, a man walked down the stairs with his hands raised.
"Woah, woah, whoa! What's going on?" He asked.
"Where's Connor's room?" Kate pointed her gun.
"Upstairs. What is this about?" He questioned as the Agents ran past him.
"I'll be happy to explain if you'll just follow me, sir." One of the cops nodded.
The Agents continued along the hall before bursting into Connor's room where he was trying to climb out of the window.
"FBI. Stay where you are, Connor." JJ warned.
"Don't shoot- I surrender." Connor raised his hands,"Please."
"Come on." Fleur grabbed him, placing cuffs on him.
All over the walls of Connor' bedroom were drawings drawings, articles and writing all about the Mirror Man.
*********************************
"I didn't do it." Connor groaned.
"Then how do you explain your obsession with the Mirror Man, Connor? For someone who claims not to be him, you sure spend a great deal of time chronicling his life." Elijah crossed his arms.
"Look, the Mirror Man is me, but I didn't kill anyone." Connor pointed,"I created him, okay? I'm a writer. I-I wanted to make a new urban legend because I love horror stories."
"This isn't a story, Connor. This is real. People are dying." Elijah shook his head.
"No, I didn't want that! Nobody sits around a campfire like they used to cause nobody ever unplugs. I wanted to create a modern day bogeyman." Connor told him.
Elijah then showed a photo from one of the victims,"Then why alter the victims' photos, hm?"
"What?" He blinked.
"You must have known that the photoshopped pictures were of people being killed." Elijah pointed.
"No, no, no. That wasn't me. I can't even use Photoshop. A lot of people I know got doctored pics, but-" Connor stammered.
"But not you." Elijah scoffed.
"But not me."
"Why do you think that is?" He asked.
"Because whoever has taken my story doesn't want me to stop telling it." Connor sighed.
*********************************
Elijah had left Connor alone to speak with Reid and Rossi outside of the room before he began yelling about a phone call or getting a lawyer.
"Hey- Stop yelling." Elijah pointed as he walked back in, sitting in front of Connor,"You don't need a lawyer, Connor. You're innocent."
"You believe me?" Connor let out a sigh of relief.
"Yes, I do." Elijah nodded,"But we need your help to find the real killer, and you know him."
"I don't know anything, man." He shook his head.
"Yes, you do. You do. Just listen to me. We think the Unsub decided to bring your story to life." Elijah spoke softly,"He may look up to you. He's probably younger than you. He may have aided in the development of the legend. He's a quiet boy. Clings to his friends because thyre all he has. He may have recently suffered abandonment by a loved one or lost someone very close to him."
"..William Pratt. He's a junior. His parents died in a car accident last year. He's been messed up ever since." Connor finally admitted.
"Thank you, Connor." Elijah nodded as he stood up, going to leave.
"Agent Deans... Is this my fault?"
Elijah sighed, sitting on the edge of the table,"He looked up to you when there was no one else to look up to. I think he saw your obsession with the Mirror Man legend and just decided to bring it to life."
"So it is my fault.." Connor spoke softly.
"Some people's wires just get crossed up, Connor. It's tragic, but it happens. This is not your fault." Elijah assured him.
*********************************
After catching Pratt with a Hostage, he had saw it was being live streamed to the news so he nail gunned the Hostage, Morgan shooting Pratt. Both went to hospital, and both ending up surviving. Morgan sighed as he sat down on the couch, stroking Marie who sat next fo him.
"Hey, don't worry about what happened." Fleur assured him.
"I shot a kid in front of all those news crews." Morgan shook his head.
"You shot a serial killer." Fleur corrected him.
"I know.." He nodded slowly.
"You did the right thing, cherié." Fleur kissed his hand.
"Thanks, Flo. For always being there for me, for everoone." Morgan smiled.
"I try my best." Fleur shrugged,"Hey, let's go for a drive..Cheer us up."
"Y'know, I think I have the perfect place in mind." Morgan agreed, standing up.
"Yeah?'
"Yeah, come on." Morgan took her hand.
"Fine by me." Fleur hummed, squeezing his hand.
Morgan smiled and the pair got into his car, eventually pulling up outside a beautiful house.
"Isn't this the house you've been restoring?" Fleur raised a brow, getting out.
"Come on." Morgan started walking to the door.
"What is going on?" She asked.
"Just come on." He hummed.
"Derek." Fleur sighed.
"Okay.. Welcome to our permanent vacation. Just think about it like this. The world needs both of us, and there's really nothing we can do about it. But we need each other just the same, Fleur. I know I need you." Morgan told her as they reached the front door,"What we do is important to each of us, but this, it can be.. Our own little fortress of solitude. Just you and me."
Fleur smiled softly,"This is for us?'
"If you're game. Living a few doors down from one another is not working for me anymore." Morgan shook his head, gesturing instead where a champagne bucket and flowers were waiting,"What do you think?"
"I think I love you." Fleur smiled and hugged him.
"I love you." Morgan pulled her in for a kiss before taking the key out of his pocket,"Welcome home."
Fleur hummed as her phone rang,"I gotta tell Eli."
"I already told him, remember?" Morgan chuckled softly.
"He told me you didn't." Fleur shook her head,"He's a horrible liar, so I would know."
"I did, twice." Morgan pointed.
"He didn't know." Fleur chuckled.
"You mean he forgot?" Morgan raised a brow.
"He has the memory of a goldfish." She nodded.
"Well then, I suppose you better tell him for a third time." Morgan shook his head.
