Chapter 106 - X

Fleur had finished getting dressed before finally calling Elijah.

"Flo, what's up?" Elijah answered.

"I heard about Blake." Fleur sat down.

"Oh- Yeah." He nodded.

"Why was I the last to know about this?" Fleur sighed.

"Well, in your defense, I didn't get a choice." Elijah shrugged,"She showed up at my place."

"And what happened?"

"Well, she came to see Reid and.. Well, they talked and she just sort of.. Dipped." He answered.

"Dipped. You're trying to match slang with Addy now?' Fleur chuckled.

"..Is it working?" Elijah asked slowly.

"Not at all."

"Damnit."

"What time are we heading into work?" Fleur asked.

"What time do you want to head in? I'm ready for whenever." Elijah hummed.

"Twenty minutes?" Fleur suggested.

"Sounds good to me." He nodded

"See you soon, cherié." Fleur hummed.

"I shall, doll." Elijah smiled.

After a while, Elijah and Reid made their way into the BAU, the lift beginning to close. But Reid shoved his bag in between the doors to keep them open, seeing a woman inside.

"Sorry, hi." Reid nodded to her as they walked in.

"Good morning. Which floor?" She asked.

"Six.. You, too." Elijah blinked.

"Karoke at the Benjamin." Reid recalled.

"Excuse me?" The woman blinked.

"You were singing karaoke at the Benjamin the night it closed." Reid pointed.

"I was. Good memory." She hummed,"Billy Joel might have died a little that night."

"Sadly, he was not the only one. He started us off, but we went on to do a six-song set." Elijah sighed.

"The 80s took a fatal hit, if I remember correctly. Have you seen the place that took over? It's like techno and twerking." She pointed.

"Ah, it's not really my crowd." Reid shook his head.

"What? You two don't twerk?" She chuckled.

Reid furrowed his brow, shaking his head and Elijah shrugged.

"I was.. No, I don't twerk." She shook her head.

That's when the elevator doors opene taht they headed towards their desks with the woman in tow.

"Agent Hotchner's office is the first one at the top of the stairs." Reid pointed.

"Thanks." She nodded.

"Good luck." Reid sighed.

Morgan, Fleur and Garcia were also walking nearby.

"Well, how'd you do last night?" Morgan asked her.

"Three hours again." Garcia sighed.

"Babygirl, you can't function on three hours of sleep." Morgan sighed,"Trust me, we've tried."

"I know, but it's better than the nightmares." Garcia groaned.

"There's gotta be something you can do." Fleur nodded.

"I've tried everything, trust me." She shook her head.

"Have you tried not drinking coffee?" Fleur took the coffee cop from Garcia.

"That is tea. It's herbal, no caffeine. What else you got? Better be a good answer." Garcia pointed and Morgan lowered his hand,"Yeah, that's what I thought."

"I know, it surprised me too." Rossi sighed as they met up with them.

"What? What surprised you?" Garcia asked.

"Hotch talked to Emily." JJ nodded.

"And?" Fleur smiled.

"She just doesn't want to come back." Rossi shrugged.

"But why? She loves us." Garcia sighed.

"For what it's worth, Hotch is interviewing someone we've met before." Reid hummed.

"He is?" Fleur raised a brow.

"How many candidates is that now?" Elijah raised a brow.

"This one makes lucky number ten." Rossi hummed.

"What? See, this is what happens when I don't sleep. I miss things. Who is this person? Is she nice? Why is that the first question I always ask?" Garcia rambled,"Anyway-We have a case." Garcia tapped her foot before quickly running up to Hotch's office.

They all made their way to the conference room and were soon joined by Hotch and a woman.

"Everyone, this is SSA Kate Callahan from Andi Swann's unit. She'll be joining the team." Hotch introduced her.

"Hi." Kate smiled.

"Congratulations." Fleur looked down at the file.

"Thanks." Kate gasped,"Oh- You're Fleur Howards."

"Sorry?" Fleur looked up.

"Sorry, you're just.. You're on the wall of achievement back at Andi's office." Kate explained.

"Wow, she liked me that much?" Fleur chuckled,"Well, it's nice to meet you. How's Andi and Seaver?"

"They're great and they say hello." Kate nodded.

"We can get started." Hotch stood up.

"Yes, we can. Uh, the Mad Butcher of Bakersfield has left another torso in the desert. This brings the body count to three this month and still none of them have been identified." Garcia began as the photos appeared on screen.

"At this pace he's going for a record." Rossi sighed.

"Yeah, and quite the imagery. What's ge trying to say?" Kate looked down at the file,"A torso on its own has no life."

"Right. It can't survive. It might be how he sees himself." Fleur nodded.

"It could also be a simple forensic countermeasure. He dumps the torso after getting rid of all the pieces that can identify his victims." JJ suggested.

"That would make sense for someone who's criminally sophisticated, but this guys leaving his DNA all over the torsos." Morgan shook his head.

"Well, we've kept tabs in CODIS. He's not in any system. But it's still a risk for him to taunt us." Elijah shrugged.

"Hey, Einstein. You're awfully quiet." Rossi looked over at Reid.

"I was just reading here the M.E thinks the victims were alive for forty-eight hours while he disarticulates." Reid told them.

"So that means the Unsub's sexual gratification comes from cutting." Kate nodded.

"Exactly, he wouldn't go to these extremes if he were merely discarding the limbs." He agreed,"He obviously enjoys the ritual. It's some kind of torture."

"So if it isn't about easy disposal the limbs could be his trophies." Morgan continued.

"He'll need preserving agents and isolation. Garcia, come up with a list of suppliers in Southern California." Hotch instructed,"We'll cross that with a geographical profile when we have it."

"Keywords sodium dioxide and silicate." Reid pointed.

"You're the best. Thank you." Garcia smiled.

"Tell them we're on our way." Hotch walked out of the room.

"Yes, sir." Garcia nodded.

*********************************

Once on the plane and everyone had sat down, they began to go over the files.

"The Mad Butcher. One hundred bucks says we have the media to thank for that one." Kate pointed.

"This is Los Angeles, they make everything a spectacle." JJ sighed.

"I'm sure he's getting off on it." Fleur shrugged.

"They always do." Elijah shook his head.

"He spared the second victim the mutilations, but the first and latest are covered. There's no clear purpose." Morgan looked at the file.

"Maybe he's experimenting." Reid suggested.

"Or he's trying to remove something that could identify those victims, like tattos, birthmarks. Kate added.

"Still hard to believe we can't ID a torso. I mean, back in the day I'd get it, but nowadays everyone might as well have a microchip." Rossi sighed.

"Okay, cutting that first victim seems extreme. Wonder if he's linked to him somehow." JJ wondered.

"None of the victims matched any missing persons reports and were likely chosen for their anonymity. Southern California's notorious for it's transient community." Reid explained.

"Going after high risk victims makes sense for this guy. I mean there's nothing about him that's particularly unique. Except he first attacked a male and then moved onto females." Rossi tilted his head.

"That's strange, 'cause a fantasy this advanced is usually specific to one type." Kate pointed.

"Well there was no DNA left on this male victim. So it isn't overtly sexual victims." JJ shrugged.

"So he's either a victim of opportunity or necessity." Kate nodded.

"Three victims in a month means he's got something to prove." Hotch agreed.

"Either to himself or the rest of us." Rossi crossed his arms.

"Alright, when we land, Morgan, you, Reid and Elijah go to the medical examiner. Dave, Kate and Howards go to the latest disposal site. And JJ and I will get set up with Lieutanant Banks at the P.D." Hotch ordered.

*********************************

"No head, hands, prints or dental records. He's not making it easy." The M.E told them.

"What do you know about this victim?" Morgan asked.

"I haven't completed the internal exam yet, but if she's anything like the others, she'll have traces if some leather particulate in her stomach." She nodded.

"So maybe he gags them with a belt as he tortures?" Morgan guessed.

"He's definitely a sexual sadist." Elijah agreed.

"That's my guess. What I know for sure is she's got good muscle tone and even has tan lines from a sports bra, indicating she's active." The M.E mentioned.

"Both females were in shape, not malnourished?" Reid raised a brow.

"No."

"It's unlikely they were transients. What do we know about the offender?" He asked.

"He has a decent knowledge of the anatomy." The M.E nodded.

"You think he has medical training?" Morgan questioned.

"Not necessarily. He could be a Butcher or a Hunter. The first step in amputation is ligating the supplying artery and vein, which the offender did." She pointed.

"That would make sense if he's trying to keep them alive for the torture." Elijah crossed his arms.

"The next step would involve an oscillating saw, but he opted for a long angled blade." She tilted her head.

"And he'd have to be pretty strong to make a clean cut like that." Morgan added.

"Absolutely. And they're identical on each victim. The decapitation was one swift, clean cut between the second and third vertebrae. No hesitation."

"He's methodical. This isn't multilation. He followed a line like a surgeon would for breast augmentation." Reid furrowed his brow.

"She has scar tissue that looks about five years old." The M.E pointed.

"He removed her implants because he knew we could trace her via the serial number." Elijah realized.

"This guys smarter than we thought." Morgan sighed.

*********************************

"You lead the Ludwig investigation in upstate New York." Rossi looked to Kate as they walked.

"Nasty piece of work, that guy. You know the story?" Kate chuckled.

"Well, it was all over the news. I saw the arrest. He was all busted up, broken nose and everything." He told her.

"That's what happens when they trip over their feet, right?" Fleur hummed.

"Oh, yeah, I've seen that happen before." Rossi nodded,"I know that case couldn't have been easy."

"When you find one that is, let me know." Kate nodded.

Rossi nodded as they walked into the broken down building the body was dumped in,"All the dump sites are pretty isolated, but this one takes the cake."

"Yeah, he could have buried the torso, but look. He laid her right there.. Maybe it's remorse?" Fleur suggested.

"He tortures them for forty-eight hours, feels bad afterwards and then lays them to rest. Doesn't sound much like a sadist now, does it?" Rossi sighed.

"Mmm.. It's not just that. This guy is compulsive. He can't shut it off. He's counting down the hours until his next kill. So what does he do to pass the time?" Kate wondered.

"He obsesses." Rossi shook his head,"He's not disposing them. He's displaying them. It's part of his fantasy. We need to set up surveillance at all the other sites."

"He's revisiting." Fleur agreed.

*********************************

"Well, British boy here figured out how to ID our latest vic." Morgan told the others as they entered the station.

"We had Garcia match body type and weight to local missing women who also had surgeries." Elijah hummed.

"Her name's Kim Eakle. She recently moved to California. She's single. Parents just reported her missing." Morgan added.

"And where's she from?" JJ asked.

"Riverside. But we have no way of knowing where or when she was taken." Morgan sighed.

"This is all over the news. Everyone's hyper-vigilant. You think he's got some kind of ruse to get her?" Lieutanant Banks asked.

"More like he knocks her out. Nothing about this guy says charming." JJ shook her head.

"Garcia, where are we on the preservatives?" Hotch called her.

"Who knew that Southern California was a hub for silicia gel? I've got a dozen places shipping regularly to a few residences.' Garcia hummed.

"No, he needs isolation. Do any of the residences have basements or detached garages?" Hotch questioned.

"No basements, but two have garages." Garcia typed.

"Any of them single men?" Elijah raised a brow.

"I wish that they were, then they'd be doing their silica weirdness family-free. Both of them are married with children, actually." Garcia nodded.

"Alright, send the adresses." Hotch instructed.

"Yep, done." She hummed.

*********************************

At one of the addresses, the team managed to bring in a man who had three legs in his car, Frank Cowles.

"Is my wife here?" He asked.

"Yes." Fleur nodded.

"My son?"

"He's at home. When his friends hear about this on the news, he'll have a lot of questions." Kate hummed.

"You enjoying this?" Cowles scoffed.

"Not in the slightest." Fleur leaned against the table.

"Because your whole approach seems callous to me." He looked down.

Kate groaned,"You're a judger. That is really.. That's something."

"Don't you just love that?" Fleue hummed,"So, what's with your hatred of women."

"I don't hate women." Cowles shook his head.

"So holding onto their limbs is something you do out of love?" Fleur raised a brow.

"No- Look, I love my family. This has nothing to do with them." Cowles shook his head.

"You gonna tell your wife that?" Fleur scoffed.

Cowles looked away, falling silent.

"It's fine. It's your right to remain silent." Kate hummed,"We'll just keep you company until your transportation arrives."

"You know, I've been doing this a long time. And the funny thing about it, behavioural science, is it's not exactly like physics." Fleur turned to Kate,"We get surprises all the time, like him."

"You know, I bet if we talked to all the neighbors, they'd say the same thing. Friendly guy. Maybe pick up on some of his insecurities. A little too average." Kate shrugged.

"But what none of the neighbours would see is what a guy like him is like when no one is watching. So.. Desperate to be aggressive, dominant." Fleur sighed.

"Yeah, this one surprises me." Kate nodded slowly,"I mean, his fantasies were innocent enough. Managed them all these years. What was it that made him snap and kill three people?"

"Wait." Cowles looked up,"You think I killed them? No, no. I just bought their limbs."

"From who?" Kate asked.

"I- I don't- I don't know." He stammered.

"You're going to have to do better than that." She pointed

Kayleigh

"So what did you do, just put out a classified?' Fleur raised a brow.

"Well, sort of.. There's this guy. I found him in a chat room. He finds whatever it is you're looking for." Cowles began.

"And how do you get it?"

"Uh.. Well, it's in a different place every time. Uh.. Rest stops, mainly abandoned places. I... I leave the cash, and he leaves what it is I paid for." He explained.

"But you wouldn't drive off straight away." Fleur nodded slowly.

"Oh, no. I'd want to be alone with it." Cowles told them.

"And you never came into contact with him? Never even saw a strange car?" Fleur wondered.

"No, no. No, never. I swear." Cowles shook his head.

They waited for a moment before deciding to leave the room, walking out to the others.

"This whole thing sounds odd, you believe him?" Banks asked.

"Yes. Fetishists aren't always violent." Kate nodded,"He had a need for the limbs but not a desire to kill."

"Then who are we looking for?"

"Single white male, thirty to forty, living in isolation." Hotch told him.

"He seeks out solitude because he was probably raised in an abusive home and still looking for refuge." Morgan sighed.

"Chances are he lost his job recently, which is why he sold the body parts." JJ added.

"His lack of social skills point to menial work, but his sophistication tells us he's more intelligent than we thought." Fleur nodded.

"Just like Jeffrey Dahmer, he's also deranged, but he's also learned from others' mistakes. He knows not to keep strong smells around too long, which is why he disposes of the torsos within a few days." Reid explained.

"There's a very good chance that he snapped because of serious rejection." Kate added.

"If he finally got the guts to ask a woman out, he would have been clumsy and aggressive and she would have pushed him away." Elijah crossed his arms.

"It's why he got rid of all the thinfs that symbolised intimacy. It's how his psychopathology developed." Hotch pointed.

"But if this is about a girl that rejected him, why kill a guy first?" Banks questioned.

"He might be connected to the second victim. But without their identifies, we can't say for sure." JJ answered.

Banks sighed,"What about the revisiting? Can we catch him like that?"

"He's obsessive about these locations, but he's probably seen the surveillance." Hotch nodded.

"Well, then, what will he do?" Banks looked up at him.

"He'll find a new victim." Hotch admitted.

*********************************

Kate, Fleur and JJ were looking through the apartment of the man they thought was their Unsub, Dylan Myers.

"I didn't picture him as the sentimental type. Cute kid. Looks so normal." Kate sighed.

"You'd like to think they all start off that way." JJ shook her head.

"I don't know. Some never have a chance." Fleur pointed out,"They lose genetics lottery right off the bat."

"You know, there's no evidence of his family anywhere in this space." JJ looked around.

"Maybe that's what made him feel so isolated." Kate wondered.

"Yeah, we said he was a loner, but in all these old photos, he's surrounded by friends and family. That doesn't fit the profile." JJ pointed out.

Once everyone else had arrived, Rossi walked over to the three girls.

"Tech said there's a layer of dust over everything. It doesn't look like he's been living here for weeks." He told them.

"So why did he pay the rent if he wasn't going to stay here?" JJ questioned.

"What have you got?" Hotch asled as he walked over.

"Everything in the Unsub's behavior points to an extreme introvert. This guy's got a lot of family photos, has a fondness for the Myers family crest. It's Scottish." Kate answered.

"He even has a tattoo of it right above his heart." Fleur showed the picture.

"Hang on.." Hotch furrowed his brow and took out his phone, showing a picture of one of the torsos with a wound over where the tattoo would be.

"That's weird." Fleur tilted her head.

"Does he have any other tattoos?" JJ asked.

"No, but a nasty surgery. Gallbladder, maybe?" Kate lifted the photo.

"It's not a coincidence that the marks that could identify him were mutilated. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Rossi raised a brow.

"Dylan Myers isn't the UnSub. He's the first victim." Hotch realised.

*********************************

"So the real Unsub killed Myers and then framed him?" Morgan asked over the phone.

"But it's not just a countermeasure. He took out a lot of rage on this man for a reason." Hotch spoke.

"Maybe this Dylan Myers stood in the way of the Unsub's true object of affection." Elijah suggested.

"Well, it makes sense since we thought the first and second victims were connected." Morgan shrugged.

"Only Dylan Myers was single." Reid reminded them.

"Garcia, was Dylan Myers dating anyone?" Hotch asked.

"He was a bit of a hermit, and like I said, zero social media skills, did go old school with a landline. Tracking his frequently called numbers. He called a young woman named Christine Locke several times. She's a former student, likes in Bakersfield.." Garcia informed them before sighing,"And she's currently missing. I'm sending you her picture now."

"She looks like his second victim." Kate sighed.

"Did she have a restraining order out on anyone?" Hotch questioned.

"Checking now. Uh..Yes. She filed for and was granted a restraining order on August 6th from a Steven Parkett." Garcia typed.

"And where is he?"

"Probably on his way to hell in a handbasket, sir. He was raised and lives at a cattle ranch and slaughterhouse in Bishopville just out of Bakersfield. Sending you the coordinates now." Garcia nodded.

*********************************

The team found Parkett at his cattle ranch and after he attacked Kate, Hotch gunned him down. Now, they were all sat on the jet back to the office.

"How many did you get?" Fleur walked over, sitting across from Kate.

"Uh, ten." She looked down at her shoulder.

"Well, vitamin E oil helps with the scarring." Fleur pointed.

"Have you ever tried cocoa butter?" Kate raised a brow.

"No." She shook her head.

Kate held out her arm,"Yeah. Six stitches inside, eight out. Guy got through the tendon. Port authority."

"Tortured, lots of years ago." Fleur chuckled and pointed towards a car,"Good times."

"Nice." Kate chuckled.

"Oh, and don't even get these two started." Fleur hummed as Elijah and Morgan sat down, Elijah beside her and Morgan beside Kate.

"What are we doing? Are we talking battle scars?" Morgan looked to them both,"Oh, yeah. I probably hold the record."

"Not so fast." Elijah pointed,"So, what are the rules? Are we just talking stich counts or are we going full on with like broken ribs, burns, concussions?"

"You weren't kidding." Kate blinked.

"Told you. And plus- I think I'm pretty high up there." Fleur pointed.

"Well, why don't we start with the most recent? Uh, a guy hit me in the arm. Same guy hit me twice in the chest but I was wearing my vest, so he only left me with welts." Morgan began, "You see, these idiots, they think they can beat me, but they can't, so they at least try to hurt me, y'know? What else? Oh- Let's not forget when I was blindsided and thrown out the window."

"Welcome to the team, Callahan." Fleur chuckled, leaning against Elijah.

"Thanks." Kate smiled at them.

*********************************

"It's not good to compare tramuas." Reid shook his head as the two couples walked towards the lift.

"We weren't comparing." Elijah rolled his eyes.

"I overheard you all." Reid told them.

"Mostly Derek." Fleur shrugged.

"What? No, I wasn't." Morgan furrowed his brow.

"Really? Because I think you were really excited to talk about all your scars." Elijah recalled.

"And that was only the ones you could see." Fleur pointed.

"Come on, you guys started it." Morgan shook his head.

Fleur hummed,"You love us."

"Of course I do." Reid nodded,"You all just.. Worry me sometimes."

"I'm sure we worry everyone." Morgan chuckled,"Don't worry, Pretty boy."

"Considering Elijah's track record, 'not worrying' is pretty hard." Reid sighed.

"Wh- Come on. I'm not that bad." Elijah groaned.

"Well.." Fleur began.

"Flo- You're meant to be on my side." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Of course, I'm on your side." Fleur took his arm.

"Then you tell my boyfriend that he doesn't need to worry about me." He told her.

"You don't need to worry about your boyfriend.. All the time.' Fleur nodded towards Reid.

"Yeah, he's only sometimes a danger to himself and others." Morgan winked.

"We don't need these men. Let's go be dangers to ourselves." Fleur hummed to Elijah.

"Exactly." Elijah nodded, patting Fleur's arm.

"Bye boys." Fleur waved as they entered the lift.

"You two have fun." Morgan chuckled.
