Chapter 104 - Angels

Elijah rolled over in bed, having just woken up. It was far too early so he was trying to get back to sleep. Although Reid was fast asleep, holding Elijah's arm as he slept. Elijah smiled softly, leaning into Reid as he closed his eyes again.

"You awake?" Reid mumbled.

"Wish I wasn't." Elijah responded.

"Did I wake you?" He asked.

"No. I don't know why I'm up." Elijah sighed.

"I thought I woke you up by holding you."

"No, I was awake before that." He shook his head

Reid nodded slowly and kissed his arm.

Elijah smiled as he pulled Reid closer to him,"I love you."

"Really? I had no idea."

"Oh, shush."

Reid chuckled as their phones buzzed, a text.

Elijah took in a deep breath,"No. I am not answering that- Nope."

"We have to." Reid sighed.

"Please?" Elijah held onto Reid tighter.

"..Five more minutes." Reid sighed in defeat.

"Thank you." Elijah hummed, kissing his cheek.

"Of course." Reid smiled softly.

Morgan was laid in bed, stroking Marie who was asleep on his chest.

"You've definitely sprayed yourself with catnip." Fleur pointed at Morgan as she walked into the bedroom.

"Psh, no I didn't. She just loves her dad." Morgan pointed.

"Not always."

"But this time."

"This time it's suspicious." Fleur got into bed beside him.

"Is it really?" Morgan asked.

"Mhm." She hummed and Beau jumped up.

"Oh, hello boy." Morgan chuckled.

"Don't wake up your sister." Fleur warned

Beau laid beside Fleur, resting his head on her legs.

"Good boy." Fleur petted his ears as she laid her head on Morgan's arm.

Morgan smiled and kissed her forehead, just as both of their phones buzzed.

"No." Fleur closed her eyes,"No, it's time to sleep."

"Babygirl, you know we have to." Morgan shook his head.

"The animals need us."

"So do the people in trouble."

Fleur sighed,"You can't say that, that makes me feel bad.

"I'm sorry, babe. But we're gonna need to get up." Morgan told her.

Fleur groaned and sat up.

"Hey, I'll make it up to you." Morvan pointed.

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Fleur sighed once again, moving Beau as she got up. Beau whined, looking up at her.

"Mama's sorry, Beau. But Papa said he'll make it up to us."

"I will, I'll take you on a nice w-a-l-k." Morgan nodded.

"Here that?" Fleur gasped.

Beau barked, wagging his tail in excitement.

"Okay, let me find some clothes." Fleur turned to her wardrobe.

*********************************

Blake sighed as she walked in,"This again?"

"Did you miss another flight to see James?" Reid asked.

"Worse. He came here." She told him,"He's cooking and watching House Hunters without me. He better not try and make an offer again."

"So, we get Henry to bed, and you know we're about to finally have some alone time with Mommy and Daddy, and.. You guys know the rest." JJ sighed.

"Ah, trying to dust off the old cobwebs." Morgan hummed.

"Inappropriate." Garcia slapped his arm.

"I felt like I stabbed the animals in the heart, having to move them." Fleur sighed.

"I'm sure they'll forgive you." Elijah patted her shoulder, glancing over at JJ,"Seriously though, how long has it been?"

"Too long." JJ shook her head.

"Do we know what the case is?" Blake asked.

"Not yet. Hotch just said to drop everything and get here." Rossi told her.

"You need some private adult time. I'll watch Henry. No bad guys, no kids, in that order." Garcia pointed to JJ,"Go to Mexico. Or the Maldives, maybe."

"Cruz?" JJ looked up.

"Yes, exactly. A cruise would be perfect." Elijah nodded.

"No, no, Matt Cruz." JJ nodded towards him and Hotch walking by.

"Let's get started." Hotch called to them.

Once everyone headed into the Conference Room, Cruz and Hotch walked in.

"How are those ribs?" Cruz asked JJ.

"It still hurts when I laugh." She hummed,"You?"

"The scars impress the ladies." Cruz chuckled as he walked to the front,"I hope you don't mind, Ms Garcia, I took the liberty of having the much less talented version of you in my office load the case details."

"Oh, yeah.. Sure, no problem." Garcia sat down.

"A good friend of mine, Sheriff Peter Coleman, down in Briscoe County, Texas, reached out to me about a possible case. He's a former Texas Ranger, he's a good guy." Cruz began.

"He read about our work on the Silencer case two years ago. He asked for a consult." Hotch nodded.

"What do we have?" Blake asked.

"Abigail Jones, prostitute. She was found in a dumpster last night." Cruz sighed.

"What's that on her wrists?" Morgan raised a brow.

"It's, uh.. It's.. Uh.." Cruz struggled to zoom in with the remote before handing it to Garcia,"Would you mind?"

"Thank you, Jesus, Buddha and Allah. I like to cover my bases, you have to squeeze it." Garcia sighed, taking the remote and zooming in.

"Rope burns." Elijah nodded.

"Which goes hand in hand with lacerations on her back." Cruz pointed.

"There's also a gunshot wound to the back of her head, execution style." JJ looked up from the file.

"It's a conflict in MO. The cutting and restraints points to sexual sadism, but the gunshot wound ends the torture too quickly for a sadist." Reid pointed.

"Is that the only victim?" Blake questioned.

"There's Hannah Kelly, another prostitute, killed six months ago, dumped one jurisdiction over." He explained.

"Forensic countermeasure." Fleur nodded,"Smart enough to separate the victims so we won't tie them together."

"And practical, too. The body was left in hooker row, where they pick up their johns, which brings us to our first victim, Lucas Wagner. Killed eleven months ago. Multiple arrests for soliciting a prostitute. He was found outside a crack house where some of them lived." Cruz continued.

"He takes a paying customer and drops them where ghe girls live. That sends a message that nobody's safe." Morgan pointed.

"Tell Sheriff Coleman we're on our way." Hotch told Cruz.

*********************************

"Ballistics matched one gun to all three shootings. So, the same Unsub killed one john and two prostitutes." JJ read from the file.

"At least he keeps it in the family." Rossi shrugged.

"Maybe the john's a friend of the Unsub, someone he picked up prostitutes with." Blake suggested.

"Well, once he kills his friend, it makes it easier to kill the prostitutes." Fleur sighed.

"That would explain why there's no sexual assault on the victims." Elijah crossed his arms,"It's not about rape for this Unsub, it's about torture."

"I mean that fits, kinda but it just feels like we're missing something." Morgan tilted his head.

"What we're missing is whether this guys a sadist or not. A gunshot to the back of the head throws everything off." Rossi pointed.

"We're presuming he brought to gun to end things, but it could be a part of the psychological torture." Hotch shook his head.

"I'm gonna cut you and if you flinch, bang." Reid agreed.

"Okay, so let's go with that for a second. There are five cuts on Lucas Wagner, nine on Hannah, twelve on Abigail. He's escalating his torture. Sadists definitely do that." JJ sighed.

"And they get deeper with each victim." Blake added.

"That's right. The first cuts were experimental in nature, and the latter ones were about maximum inflicted of pain." Reid nodded.

"What if this is vigilantism?" Rossi asked,"He's punishing these women and their johns to clean up the streets."

"But why take so long to do it? Three victims in eleven months? That's a substantial cooling off period." Morgan sighed.

"Morgan, you, Reid and Deans talk to anyone working the streets last night and see if they saw something useful. Dave and Blake, go to the coroner's office, see what you can learn there, and JJ, Howards and I will go to the station with the sheriff and start interviewing friends and family." Hotch ordered.

*********************************

"How do you know Matt Cruz?" Hotch asked the sheriff as they walked in.

"He and I worked a few cases back when he was working out of the Dallas field office." Coleman answered.

"So which serial killers that you guys caught was the scariest?" Vicky, the deputy, hummed.

"Vicky." Coleman turned to her.

"It's okay." Fleur assured them,"Cases involving kids are the toughest."

"Oh- Oh, sure. Of course." She nodded.

"Where would you like us to set up?" Hotch asked.

"Uh, right here." Coleman pointed,"And we've got the boards right over there."

"Oh that's.. That's full." JJ blinked.

"Well, the whole force wanted to work on it. We've had bad people down here, but we've never seen anything like this." Vicky explained.

"But we'll be following your lead on this one." Coleman nodded,"You have our best men on this, Agent Hotchner. How can we help?"

"Have any of the family members come in yet?" Hotch raised a brow.

"Uh, Carrie Lawson, Abigail's sister." Coleman pointed.

"I told her to come here at noon, but she arrived at 8:00. Hasn't budged for hours, not even to go to the bathroom." Vicky told them.

"I'll talk to her." JJ nodded.

"Oh, can I sit in?" Vicky asked,"I won't say a word."

"You know..It might be more comfortable for her if its just one on one." JJ sighed.

"Let me show you to the interview room." Vicky nodded, walking off with JJ.

"She's.. Enthusiastic." Fleur crossed her arms.

"But she means well, they all do." Coleman assured them.

"Of course." Hotch nodded.

"I've only been sheriff here a year, but it's the biggest case we've ever had." Coleman sighed.

"Let's get to work." Hotch hummed.

"You bet." Coleman agreed.

*********************************

Meanwhile out in the streets, Morgan, Elijah and Reid got out a cop car.

"Not too many spots for working girls to go to, so this'll be your best shot." Bennet, the other deputy, told them as he got out as well.

"And you turn a blind eye to what goes on in here?" Reid asked.

"Agent, we only got one bar around here. Monday night is karaoke, Tuesday is line dancing, and the girls are discreet. Can hardly tell the professionals from the locals who just want to get their drink on." He sighed,"Not to mention, we shut this place down, then what?"

"The devil you know kind of thing." Morgan hummed.

"Exactly." Bennet nodded.

"Deputy." Dinah, the woman in charge, nodded as they walked in.

"Dinah. These three are agenrs from the FBI. You mind answering some questions?"

"Don't know much, but sure." Dinah shrugged.

"We're trying to find out more about a woman named Abigail Jones. Did you know her?" Reid placed down the picture of Abigail.

"Why you all asking about Abby?" A man across the bar asked.

"When was the last time you saw her?" Elijah looked up at him.

"Last week. Same bat time, same bat station. She's alright, ain't she?" The man asked.

"No, she was killed a couple of nights ago." Reid told him.

"Killed? God almighty." He looked down.

"How well did you know her?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Used to flirt." Another man mentioned.

"Y'know, she always said I couldn't handle her. She was right." The first man spoke again,"So I'd buy her drinks. She liked when I buy her drinks."

"Was she that kind of girl?" Morgan raised a brow,"Party girl, maybe?"

Dinah shook her head,"It was hard to tell when she was loaded or not. I mean, she was always.. Off. Like she had her own song going on in her head."

"Mack the knife." A young girl spoke.

The others went quiet before Elijah tapped Reid's and walked over to her.

"What was that?" He asked her.

"Mack the knife." She repeated.

"Was that the song in her head?" Elijah raised a brow.

"No. It was the name of her last date. You know what I mean?"

"Yes, I do. Have you ever met this Mack the knife?" He questioned.

"No. She told me about him, said he was a good tipper." She shook her head.

"Do you know where we could talk to him?"

She shook her head once again, staying quiet while Dinah looked over.

Elijah looked up at Dinah before back down at the girl,"Would you prefer to talk privately?"

"I can't."

"Okay. Why don't we just have a little chat, right here. You don't have to look at me. Don't move your head, just keep looking down." Elijah instructed as he sat beside her, discreetly holding out his card to her,"Just doing my best to be charming, if you don't mind. Could you lean over and take this card from me?"

It took a second before she took the card from Elijah. It had his phone number on it.

"See? I'm not so bad. Come on, we're just talking it up, having some fun, right?" Elijah chuckled softly, leaning in closer,"Why don't you flash me that pretty, little smile of yours. Then slap me on the shoulder like maybe I'm trying to get fresh or something, huh? No? Yeah?"

The girl giggled,"Dirty boy, you wish."

"Alright, well, you can't blame a guy for trying." Elijah hummed as he stood up,"It was nice to meet you."

"Thank you for your time, would you mind if we came back a little later?" Reid asked Dinah.

"Oh, anytime. I've got nothing to hide." Dinah nodded.

"Thanks." Reid smiled as they walked out.

"Sorry I couldn't help you none." Dinah called after them.

*********************************

Some of the Agents arrived at the newest crime scene, although the local cops were trying to move the body.

"Whoa, whoa! What are you doing?" Fleur ran over.

"Do not disturb the crime scene." Coleman pointed.

"Well, we took a bunch of pictures just like you ordered us to." Bennet spoke up.

"I ordered you not to touch a damn thing." Coleman reminded him.

"We need to look at this crime scene undisturbed. Do you mind not standing there? Thanks." Reid sighed.

"He's escalated his cuts." Rossi pointed,"They're not only bigger.."

"Cutting was done postmortem. It was the gunshot that killed her." Fleur nodded.

"How can you tell?" Coleman raised a brow.

"Based on the lack of blood flow and scar tissue. If she were alive when this was done, there would be a lot more blood on her back." Reid mentioned.

"Which means this wasn't S&M." Rossi sighed,"This was symbolic."

"Symbolic of what?" Coleman raised a brow.

"We're not sure." Rossi shook his head.

"Can you smell that?" Fleur sniffed the air.

Rossi sniffed as well,"Lavender."

"That doesn't grow in these parts." Coleman shook his head.

"It's mainly around her legs." Reid pointed.

"Why would he do that?"

"Reid, can you look into it?" Rossi asked,"We can't trust the coroner to follow through."

"Yeah." Reid nodded, getting up.

"We need to deliver the profile." Rossi told Coleman.

*********************************

Soon enough, everyone was in the sheriff's office, beginning to deliver the profile.

"We believe the UnSub we're looking for is a white male in his early thirties. While his MO is that of a sadist, we think there's an underlying pathology of what we call a wound collector." Hotch began.

"What's that?" Vicky asked.

"A wound collector is someone who uses a lifetime of slights, grievances and wrongs as justification for violence. Examples can be as large scale as Hitler scapegoating the Jews for the Holocaust." Reid explained.

"Or as common as an abusive husband blaming his wife as an excuse to beat her." JJ added.

"This UnSub is low key, almost submissive in public. He has to be to attract the prostitutes." Fleur sighed.

"But his real nature will be revealed in the safety of isolation." Elijah crossed his arms,"This is the type of man who would anonymously express himself online by raging about how these women are filled with disease and filth, how they deserve what's coming to them, probably to cover for the rejection of a woman or spouse who's wronged him."

"Which means the UnSub probably has a working class or part time job. It gives him the time to plan and execute the murders." JJ nodded.

"He's strong and good with his hands and probably drives a work truck or large vehicle." Rossi continued.

"This allows him to move the bodies and carry to tools for posing his victims." Blake explained.

"Tabitha Ryerson tells us he's losing control. He killed her in her home and then transported her body to the woods so he could mutilate her postmortem. The public nature of the display was a message." Morgan told them.

"To who?" Coleman asked.

"To us." Reid answered,"This is a small town and he knows the FBI is here investigating his crimes. He thinks he's showing us that he's smarter than we are."

"He's also showing us his wounds. There's part of him that wants us to stop and punish him for his crimes. Thank you, excuse me. Hotch finished as his phone rang, walking off.

*********************************

"How could it not be him?" Coleman questioned after Rossi and Blake interviewed their top suspect,"He had S&M sessions with all the victims."

"We profiled that this UnSub would be submissive in public and dominant with the prostitutes and McIntyre is the opposite." Hotch sighed.

"He takes the submissive role in the S&M play, most likely because he's so dominant as a principal at his parochial school." Elijah explained.

"So we're back to the starting point." Coleman cursed.

"Our best bet is still the prostitutes." JJ pointed,"Tabitha's death might scare some of them into talking to us."

"Mrs Lawson?" Hotch walked forward as she walked in.

"Did Preacher Mills talk to you?" She asked.

"Not since yesterday, why?" Hotch raised a brow.

"We were talking in his church, and one of the girls, Belinda, I think, came in begging for help." Carrie told him,"The preacher said he was going to tell you what she saw and get an update on the case, but he never came back."

"When was this?' Hotch blinked.

"This morning."

"No, we haven't seen him."

"What do you mean? She said the same thing my sister did. 'They' were coming to get her. What the hell's going on?" Carrie questioned.

"Excuse me for just a moment." Hotch walked back over to the team.

"Guys, I think I know what the lavender on Tabitha Ryerson's legs is about." Reid began,"Have you ever heard of spikenard?"

"Uh.. No." Coleman shook his head.

"It's perfume." Elijah shrugged,"It's mentioned in the gospels."

"It's derived from lavender. It's what Mary Magdalene used to wash Jesus' feet, which tells us that this UnSub message is obviously religiously in nature." Reid explained.

"Precher Mills, maybe. He came forward to volunteer information." Morgan suggested.

"Well, yesterday he said he'd let us know if he has any more information, but apparently he's changed his mind." Hotch sighed.

"He fits the profile. He's morally rigorous, submissive in public." JJ pointed.

"So we'll put an APB out for him." Coleman nodded.

*********************************

"Did you know the charge of being a pimp, being gussied up, is 'procuring and pandering'? And Hotch was right. Preacher Mills is familiar with this charge. Because before he was Justin Mills, he was Gordon Borell, and he was arrested for cutting one of the ladies he employed." Garcia told them.

"Where did he cut her?" Fleur asked.

"On the back. When questioned, she said.. Oh, I'm going to have to look at kitten videos after this." Garcia sighed softly,"..He was marking his property."

"You're kidding." Coleman cursed.

"That's why he specifically asked me about the wounds on Lucas Wagner. He knew we'd find out about his past." Hotch shook his head.

"Why didn't we turn this up before now?" Rossi asked.

"Because he changed his name when he crossed the border. The northern border to be exact. Mr Mills, née Borell, is from Tees, Alberta. I'll tell you what. Those Canadian, they seem so sweet and innocent but when they go bad, they go Darth Vader bad." Garcia pointed.

"So he came here to start over, took on the mantle of the collar as the perfect cover for the sex trade." Fleur explained.

"In this town, no one would ever question a man of God." Coleman shook his head,"But now we got the smoking gun we need on this guy."

"Garcia, was there an attempted murder charge?" Hotch questioned.

"No. In fact, she said he wanted her to go back out and start working when he was done cutting her." Garcia answered.

"He's not our UnSub." Fleur spoke.

*********************************

"This guy fits to a T. How can we rule him out?" Coleman questioned.

"Criminally, pimps follow the same behavioural patterns as drug dealers." Rossi sighed.

"Prostitutes are his revenue stream." JJ nodded.

"He would only kill them as a last resort." Reid added.

"Which is why the cutting in Canada was a punishment, not a religious punishment, but a punishment for not doing their jobs." Elijah explained.

"Then he comes here to start over, set up a new shop." Morgan continued.

"And that's when somebody found out about his past, used it as a forensic countermeasure to throw us off track by framing him." JJ told him.

"That's why the girls kept saying, 'They're after us'. There wasn't a team of UnSubs, but one sadist copying the behavior of another." Fleur sighed.

"It would also explain the change with Tabitha." Reid agreed,"The escalation, the perfume on the feet."

"But you said the UnSub wanted us to catch him and punish him." Coleman nodded slowly.

"What he really wanted was for us to catch the preacher." Rossi shook his head.

"So whoever this guy is, he's fooled all of us, and now we got nothing when it comes to the profile." Coleman told them.

"No, that's not true. The Unsub chose Mills for a reason, and Mills can still lead us to the Unsub." Hotch pointed,"We'll have Agent Morgan and the deputies start at his house."

*********************************

Some of team pulled up outside a diner with cops where Mills was supposed to be inside.

"He's been in there a good five minutes now." Vicky told them,"l haven't seen any movement yet."

"What about patrons?" Reid asked.

"Oh, it's closed."

"How many entrances?" Blake questioned.

"Uh, two, it looks like." She answered.

"The question is, is he alone?" Elijah wondered.

"Guys, I've got movement. We should move in now, Sheriff." Bennet told them.

"Actually, we're better off establishing the perimeter first." Reid shook his head,"Then we can set up a line of communication."

"Alright, agreed. We need to get around-" Coleman began.

But Coleman was shot down by Mills and they hurried for cover behind the police cars.

"Shots fired! Shots fired!" Bennett yelled.

Everyone began to shoot back at Mills, Blake going ahead to try and grab Coleman.

"Blake!" Reid tried to pull her to safety but he was hit in the process.

"Elijah!" Fleur shouted for him as she ran over to Blake and Reid with Morgan.

They managed to pull Reid and the now dead Coleman to safety, leaning Reid against the side of the car.. He'd been shot in the neck. Everyone continued to shoot at Mills as Blake and Elijah stayed with Reid. One by one the cops were shot down, leaving only Morgan, JJ and Fleur to break inside the diner. That's when Mills shot directly at Morgan, causing him to fall to the ground.
