Chapter 103 - Rabid
"Come on, babe. Fleur's car is here." Elijah called upstairs to him.
"Yeah, I'm just coming." Reid ran over, placing the Grand Canyon Ornament on the mantelpiece.
"We've got an exciting day ahead of us." Elijah hummed.
"I don't like the idea of working out."
"Well, you need to."
"I'd say I'm actually quite fit." He pointed.
"Well, I'd say that Fleur and I are in better shape than you, string bean." Elijah shrugged as they started walking to the car.
"I.. Look great."
"I never said you didn't." Elijah pointed,"Just that we're more physically skilled."
Reid chuckled and locked the door, walking inside of the car.
"Morning boys." Fleur hummed.
"Morning, love." Elijah waved to her.
"We all ready?" Fleur asked.
"Ready for fitness test practice? I'm so ready." Elijah winked,"So is Reid."
"No I am not." Reid sighed.
"You need to have some faith, Reid." Elijah shook his head.
"I won't be able to do this."
"Hey, you aren't alone. Garcia's doing the test too." Elijah reminded him.
"We won't be able to do this." He corrected.
"Fleur, tell him they've got this." Elijah sighed.
"If Elijah and I can do this, you'll be fine." Fleur hummed.
"See?"
"I guess so." Reid sighed.
"Look, Flo and I will be right there with you both to.. Encourage you." Elijah told him.
"I wouldn't say encourage-" Fleur shrugged.
Elijah cleared his throat,"Encourage."
"Encourage it is." Fleur chuckled.
"You two are the worst." Reid sighed.
"Of course." Fleur hummed as she drove off to Garcia's house
When they arrived, Garcia sighed as she got unto the car,"Hello, my lovelies."
"Hello Penelope." Fleur hummed.
"Do we really need to do this?" She asked.
"Unfortunately, yes." Fleur chuckled.
"But I'm never in the field."
"Still needs to be done."
"Isn't there some way I can get out of it?" Garcia questioned.
"Nope, I already tried." Reid sighed.
"Look, you two just need to relax. It isn't even that bad." Elijah assured them.
*********************************
"8:49." Garcia panted as they all crossed the finish line at the track.
"You did so good, sweeties." Elijah clapped from the stands.
"Good God, that's not even close." Reid cursed.
"Why does it have to be such a fast mile?" Garcia questioned,"Have you ever even had to run a mile in the field?"
"No." Fleur wiped the sweat from her head.
"I'm not even in the field. I sit at a computer on my perfect posterior, like all day." Garcia panted.
"Maybe we should ask Morgan for help." Reid suggested.
"No." Garcia stopped him.
"But he has really good abs." Reid winced.
"Yes, he does. But it's bad enough that some bureaucrat is making us take this stupid test." Garcia pointed,"The last thing we need is Mr Universe talking smack the whole time."
"But he knows about all this stuff." Fleur shrugged,"He could probably teach you tricks, help you train."
"Yeah, but he takes it way too seriously. I worked out with him once." Elijah shook his head as he walked over.
"You work out? That's cool." Reid smiled.
"Yeah." He hummed.
"I don't." Reid shook his head.
"I tried in a non-traditional manner and never again with him. He was all, 'There you go, babygirl. Move it or lose it. This ain't your high-tech room. My grandmamma can move better than that'." Garcia sighed.
"He can be enthusiastic at times." Fleue shrugged.
"That's a way of saying it. But no, me and you, we can do this. Me and you, we've got this. A couple more laps, okay? Here we go. One, teo.." Garcia trailed off.
That's when their savior texted, Hotch. They had a case.
"Hallelujah." Garcia smiled.
"What? We have a case?" Reid panted.
"Yep."
"Thank God."
"Race you to the bleachers." Garcia took off towards the bleachers, "We don't need him!"
"I'm just going to have a heart attack." Reid held his chest.
"Need me to carry you, princess?" Elijah raised a brow.
"Please?"
"Of course." Elijah chuckled as he scooped up Reid.
"Careful, I'm sore." Reid sighed.
"Don't worry, I know how to be gentle." Elijah hummed.
"I know." Reid nodded.
*********************************
"I'm ready, sir." Garcia sighed as she walked into the Conference Room with Morgan.
"Alright, let's get started." Hotch nodded.
"Okay, great. So, this morning, a Wisconsin park ranger discovered three partially buried bodies in a forest preserve just outside Milwaukee." Garcia began as pictures appeared on screen.
"Decomposed. They weren't all killed st the same time." Rossi tilted his head.
"And that us why I call you eagle eye." Garcia pointed,"Preliminary M.E reports they'd each been killed about a month apart. The most recent victim, Susan Clark, has been dead approximately two weeks."
"Twenty-eight year old exotic dancer and prostitute. High risk lifestyle. What about the other two?" Blake asked.
"I haven't ID'd them yet." Garcia shook her head.
"Cause of death?"
"Still working on that. too."
"Looks like they were all covered in bite marks." Morgan blinked.
"From the Unsub?" Elijah raised a brow.
"Probably from critters out in the woods." Rossi shrugged.
"He murdered them months apart, but he buried them all in the exact same spot. The disposal site's obviously important to him." Reid pointed.
"Susan Clark was reported missing six weeks ago. There were long term ligature marks on her wrists and ankles." Fleur added.
"He holds them captive before he kills them." Rossi nodded.
"But what exactly is he holding them for?" Blake wondered.
"That's what we need to find out." Hotch sighed,"Wheels up in thirty."
*********************************
"My friends in an airplane, do not say I'm not a giver. I have I.D'd the first two victims. Coming to your tablet now. First up, Milwaukee resident, Melvin Lewis, fifty year old divorcé and truck driver. Next we have Rudy Hightower, a thirty-two year old homeless Iraq war veteran." Garcia told them.
"Two Caucasians and an African American. This guy doesn't have a racial preference either." Morgan shook his head.
"There's still no connection between the victims." JJ sighed.
"Maybe there is no connection." Rossi shrugged,"They could be targets of opportunity."
"That means it's not about who he kills, it's about how he kills them." Reid tilted his head.
"Or what he does before or after he kills them." Elijah suggested.
"Pen, have they determined the cause of death yet?" Fleur asked.
"Negative." She hummed.
"Each one of them was single and lived alone. Maybe he keyed in on that knowing that they wouldn't be reported missing." Morgan sighed.
"Well, he'd have to sgalk them long enough to know that." JJ shook her head.
"Dave, you, Reid and Howards go to the coroners. Blake, Deans and I will coordinate with local PD. And JJ, I want you and Morgan at the disposal site." Hotch nodded.
*********************************
"Sorry about the wait. We were collecting tissue and organ samples to send to the lab. Here's my report." The M.E told them as he wheeled in the bodies.
"You able to determine the cause of death?" Fleur asked.
"Cardiac arrest, all three of them." Reid read from the file,"What caused their hearts to stop?"
"That's why we're sending the organ samples." The M.E sighed.
"Tox reports?" Rossi raised a brow.
"All negative."
"Any sign of sexual assault?" Fleur questioned.
"Inconclusive. They're too decomposed." He sighed.
"What about the bite marks?" Rossi asked.
"Yeah, about 90% of them are postmortem, from animals out in the woods.. A coyote, fox, maybe or a raccoon." He shrugged.
"And the other 10%?"
"That's.. Where it gets weird." The M.E shook his head,"They all had antemortem bites, too. The first victim, Melvin Lewis, his were animal bites, but the others-'
"They were bitten by a human." Reid furrowed his brow as he looked at the file.
"Pretty viscously, too. Some of the wounds are deep. Chunks of flesh are missing. We found several."
"Total of eleven?" Reid nodded.
"You read fast." The M.E chuckled.
"Were you able to obtain DNA samples from any of the bites?" Reid tilted his head.
"No."
"It could be a form of torture, maybe a biting fetish." Fleur shrugged.
"Didn't know there was such a thing." The M.E shrugged.
"Oh, you'd be surprised." Fleur sighed.
"We should also consider cannibalism. When you get a moment, would you mind taking some bite moulds for us?" Reid asked.
"Yeah." He nodded.
"Maybe that's why he holds them captive first. If he's feeding on them, I'd lay odds that he's already got his next victim." Rossi crossed his arms.
"Considering the specificity of the MO, the body count and the timeline, I'd say those odds are actually pretty good." Reid sighed.
*********************************
"What's with you? You okay?" Morgan raised a brow as he walked in, seeing Reid stretching.
"Yeah, I'm great. I'm just doing some stretching because it helps me keep my brain.. Limber. I've also been doing some geoprofiling. The red marker indicate where the victims lived, except, of course, Rudy Hightower, who was homeless. The blue markers indicate where they were last seen alive. And this is disposal site." Reid explained.
"So, that's his hunting zone." Morgan nodded.
"Which means he probably lives close by." Hotch agreed.
"Okay, so, somethings not adding up for me here. Here you go." Elijah walked in with coffee, handing one to Morgan.
"Thanks." Morgan hummed.
"If we are dealing with a cannibal, why does he dispose of the bodies? Why not keep them?" Elijah questioned.
"Well, it's not easy to keep a body fresh. Maybe, he doesn't have the resources." Morgan suggested as he shook his head.
"Maybe he doesn't require large portions of flesh to satiate his urges. Most ritual cannibalism involves the consumption of particular organs as a means to commune with the deceased." Reid explained.
"But none of the victims were missing any organs." Fleur sighed.
"Which means it's probably not about the ritual, but about the compulsion." Hotch pointed.
"I don't know. He grabs them, he holds them captive, and then buries them all in the exact same spot." Morvan nodded.
"And how do we explain the first victim, Melvin Lewis?" Reid questioned,"He didn't have any human bite marks."
*********************************
"Based on the demographics of the area, we believe that we're looking for a Caucasian male from his mid twenties to late thirties." Hotch began.
"We just received confirmation from the coroner's office that each of the victims died from rabies." Reid told them.
"Two of the victims sustained significant human bite wounds, and dental records confirm that those bite wounds came from other victims." Morgan continued.
"Which means that somehow or another, he's facilitating biting attacks." Rossi nodded.
"We think he's a sadist who gets off on watching the attacks. He may record them so he can relive the event over and over again." Blake added.
"Rabies has been around since the beginning of documented history. It has the highest case to mortality rate in existence and is arguably the most dangerous disease known to man." Reid explained.
"It's derived from a Sanskrit word meaning 'to do violence'. Carriers literally go stark raving mad." Blake sighed.
"I thought there's a vaccine for it." A cop spoke up.
"There is but the post exposure prophylaxis is only effective if administered within twenty four hours of infection. Once the symptoms appear, the prognosis is death." Reid told him.
"It's also contagious, so it's at great risk to himself that he's chosen this method to kill." Elijah crossed his arms.
"Which means it holds special significance to him. He may have lost a pet or even a relative to the virus." Fleur continued.
"It is not easy to obtain a sample of the virus. We think he most likely started with an animal." Reid shook his head.
"So he may have worked at a veterinary clinic, maybe a pest control company." JJ listed.
"What he's doing takes deliberation and patience and is rooted in a need-based desire. So, he's not going to stop on his own. Thank you." Hotch finished.
*********************************
"Give it to me, Dollface." Morgan answered the phone.
"Do you know that over 50,000 people die of rabies every year in third world countries? Thank God for Monsieur Pasteur, otherwise we'd all be dead." Garcia sighed,"Okay, so I looked into every known case of rabies exposure in the country over the last twenty years."
"Did you find anything?" Fleur asked.
"Cool your jets, sweet tea, I will let you know if I've got something. So I've got something." Garcia told her,"Fifteen years ago in a town called Two Rivers, Wisconsin, a nine year old, Hunter Cunningham, was admitted to the hospital with severe flu-like symptoms. Symptoms get worse, he develops hydrophobia. Turns out that three weeks prior, he was bitten by a bat when he was out camping with his family."
"Two Rivers is less than a two hour drive from here, and it's even closer to the disposal site." Reid pointed.
"A bat? That's odd." JJ shook her head.
"Actually, bats make up 12% of Wisconsin's mammalian population, and they're responsible for the majority of the infections in the U.S." Reid shrugged.
"Babygirl, what's so special about this Hunter Cunningham kid?" Morgan asked.
"Here's what special. A week after he was admitted to the hospital, he checked out of the hospital. But I can't find a death certificate. It's like he just.. Disappeared." Garcia shook her head.
"What about his family?" He questioned.
"His father Patrick died six years ago of a massive heart attack. And Mom, Wanda, works as a bartender at the Tropicana Hotel in Vegas." Garcia typed.
"Any siblings?" JJ raised a brow.
"Yes, Affirmative. One older brother, David Wade Cumningham, twenty-eight year old residant of Milwaukee."
"And whats his deal?" Elijah asked.
"His deal is... Ay, Chihuahua. Не works at Nassee Pest Control, which specialises in dangerous animal removal, and you don't even have to ask me, home and work address sent. Bam!" Garcia hummed.
*********************************
The group were walking around David Cunningham's home, although there was no sign of him. They did, however, find quite a few books on rabies.
"Alright, thanks babygirl." Morgan hung up,"This Cunningham guy got fired from his last two pest control jobs."
"Probably for stealing equipment." Elijah hummed as he pulled things out for the closet.
"You know, I bet that's how he acquired his first sample of the rabies virus, on his job."
"The acquisition of the virus may have been the trigger itself. It's worth mentioning, the only known rabies survival story that didn't involve the vaccine happened right here in Milwaukee." Reid informed them,"A fifteen year old girl survived the virus when doctors put her in a medically induced coma."
"You think it's connected to this?" Morgan asked.
"Based on the shere proximity, it's possible, but given the lengths to which the Unsub goes to infect his victims, I think it's unlikely." He shook his head.
"Hey, look what I found. It was hidden really well in his closet. He did not want anyone finding it and I think I know why." JJ walked out, holding a box.
She took out a recording device and played what it had taped. They could hear the sounds of Hunter crying in pain and his father reprimanding David for being in the room before she turned it off.
"1999. That was the year his brother Hunter got rabies." Morgan realised.
"By the time they got him to the hospital, there was nothing the doctors could do. It's possible the parents brought him home to die instead." Reid sighed.
"And then his big brother David recorded the whole thing." JJ shook his head.
"He was twelve at the time. Thats an impressionable age for a single event imprint." Morgan pointed.
"It clearly unlocked some sort of psychopathic fascination that he's still trying to satisfy." Reid nodded.
"I can't imagine watching my own son die, let alone from rabies." JJ sighed.
"It almost makes you consider euthanasia." Elijah commented.
The three of them looked at Elijah.
"He's not saying he would advocate euthanasing Henry or anything." Reid quickly spoke.
"No. Boys, that's it. That's why Garcia couldn't find a death certificate for Hunter Cunningham." JJ realized.
"Because his parents must have done it." Morgan nodded,"They couldn't bear to watch, so they put him out of his misery."
*********************************
The group then ran into the park where it was reported that Liz Foley was staggering around, acting erratically.
"There's too many people." Fleur cursed.
"Get everybody out while I get her attention." Morgan pointed.
"FBI! We need to clear everyone out, let's go." JJ clapped.
"Liz Foley, I need you to stop right there." Morgan pointed,"Ma'am- I need you to stay back."
"Who are you? You don't tell me what to do!" Liz foamed at the mouth, staggering towards Morgan.
"Ma'am, I said stop!" Morgan raised his gun.
"I tell you what to do!" She pointed.
"Stop right now!"
"I tell you to stop!" She kept moving forward, shouting.
Morgan then fired at Liz's knee, causing her to fall to the ground. Liz continued to groan before she cried and leaned against a wall. Soon enough, the ambulance arrived and she was strapped onto a stretcher with oxygen being supplied to her
"Her family's been notified. They're gonna meet her at rhe hospital." Fleur walked over.
"There's nothing else they can do for her, huh?" Elijah raised a brow.
"Comfort measures, but that's about it." Reid sighed.
"Thanks officer." Rossi nodded,"We can't be far from where he's holding them hostage. She was on foot."
"But in her state, how in God's name did she escape?" Blake wondered.
"Reid, where are we in relation to his hunting ground?" Hotch asked.
"Right in the middle of it." Reid answered.
"At your service, sir." Garcia hummed as she answered the call.
"Garcia, we're trying to figure out what kind of building or property the UnSub might be using. What do you see in a five mile radius of our current position?" Hotch asked.
"A lot of stuff. What am I looking for?" Garcia asked.
"Anything relatively isolated or industrial." Rossi suggested.
"Ah, it's mainly residential, single-family homes, apartment buildings, stuff like taht." She told them.
"What about abandoned properties?'
"Not per say, but people don't usually give notice when they do that. Let me see if there's any condemned.. No, nothing." Garcia shook her head.
"What about properties for sale?" Morgan tried.
"Let's see.. One, two, six homes for sale. All of them occupied. An apartment building for sale, also occupied. It looks like the city is selling some land."
"What's there?" Elijah questioned.
"Hold yourself. It is at.. Hello, it's an animal shelter. But it's shut down due to budget cuts." She told him.
"That could be it Garcia, send the address." Morgan nodded.
"Done and done, please be careful." Garcia sighed.
*********************************
"Thanks man." Morgan signed both Reid and him out of the hospital after they had been patched up.
The UnSub had electrocuted Morgan, Reid coming in to save him but ended up getting punched.
"Pretty boy." Elijah hummed, cupping his face,"I hope he didn't mess that face up too bad. You know it's your best asset."
"Luckily just some superficial nicks and bruises. How are you doing?" Reid hummed, glancing at Morgan.
"I just got a couple burns, but I'll be alright." Morgan shrugged.
"Found another body at the disposal site." Fleur sighed as she walked over with JJ.
"Hunter Cunningham?" Reid asked.
"Well, we're still awaiting DNA confirmation, but they're the skeletal remains of a nine year old boy." Fleur took Morgans arm.
"So.." Morgan trailed off,"It has to be him."
"You guys ready to get out of here?" Fleur looked up.
"Yes, please. I can't stand hospitals, it's something about the lighting." Elijah crossed his arms.
"Who's Rossi talking to?" Morgan wondered.
"The Foley family.. She slipped into a coma." JJ looked down.
"It won't be long now." Reid sighed.
"Excuse me, agents?" Russel spoke as he was wheeled over,"The doctors, they said in going to be okay. And I.. I just.. I don't know how to thank you guys."
"No, there's no need. Just get better." JJ smiled.
"Okay." He shook their hands.
*********************************
Reid, Fleur, Garcia and Elijah were on the floor, stretching at the track.
"You think they'll really terminate us if we can't run fast enough?" Reid asked them.
"Probably something worse. They'll make us take another fit test." Garcia sighed.
"I'd rather be terminated." Reid shook his head.
"Let's just hope the PT instructor isn't a jerk." Fleur shrugged.
"Those jock guys are always such jerks." Elijah pointed.
"Yeah, total jerks. That's probably him right now." Reid nodded.
"Oh- Look, he's totally walking like a jerk." Garcia groaned.
"Yeah, it's a total jerk walk." Reid agreed as the man walked up.
"Total jerk walk." Elijah chuckled.
"Hold on- I think that's Morgan." Reid blinked.
"Oh my god- It is." Garcia gasped slightly,"Why are you here?"
"He's your new P.T instructor, Watkins got sick." Fleur laughed.
"You knew?" Garcia turned to her.
"Mhm." Fleur nodded.
"Today's your lucky day, I'm your guy." Morgan hummed.
"Awesome. That's awesome." Garcia shook her head.
"Guys, come on, seriously? You guys should've just said something. This whole fitness test thing is just a formality. I could've gotten the whole thing waived."
Reid looked back at Elijah who just shrugged, as if Fleur hadn't told him this previously.
"But since you didn't.. You guys ready to do this?" Morgan smirked.
"Yeah- Let's do this." Garcia jogged over to the track with Reid,"Woo!"
"Uh, hey, hey. Happy go luckys, where you going?" Morgan asked.
"To run the mile." She pointed.
"You didn't hear? The fit test is more than just a mile. Get your little butts back over here." Morgan chuckled.
Morgan then began working circuits with the group, push-ups and running up and down the bleacher all while Morgan motivated them. Soon enough, the four of them lay on the ground, panting. They had done too much.
"Hey, hey, hey. What are we doing? What's with all this huffing and puffing?" Morgan questioned,"Come on, we've still got s two-mile run to go. Let's go."
"Morgan, you've tired them and me and Elijah." Fleur cursed.
"Sorry- Two miles?" Garcia blinked.
"It's supposed to be one mile." Elijah pointed.
"Not on my watch. This whole fitness test is altogether different. Now suck it up!" Morgan clapped.
"Oh my god." Garcia sighed.
"Let's go." Morgan hummed.
"Come on Morgan, enough is enough." Fleur cursed.
"I guess I've got to let the cat out of the bag, huh? I kind of already had your fit test waived." Morgan admitted.
"What?" Reid panted.
"Yeah. Babygirl, think about it. You're not even in the field. And Pretty Ricky, you've already got enough case hours to qualify." Morgan laughed,"This was just a good time for me."
"I'm gonna kill him." Garcia gasped.
"If I can manage to move my arms, ill hold him down." Reid told her.
"I told you should've said something." Morgan chuckled.
"I'll help." Fleur held up her hand.
"You're getting it now!" Garcia ran at Morgan.
Morgan laughed and ran off as the four of them ran after Morgan, tackling him.
"I'm going to kill you!" Garcia groaned.
"You like that?!" Reid smacked Morgans butt.
"Reid- What the fuck?" Elijah snickered.
"Sorry." He chuckled.
"Have you learned your lesson?" Garcia crossed her arms.
"I've been taught." Morgan hummed.
"You better not try any of this crap again because I am not doing it." Elijah pointed.
"Of course not." He raised his hands.
