Chapter 1 - First Case

This was it. The day the Academy was waiting for. Their first cases, when they find out the departments they were going in.

Elijah and Fleur had been hand picked by the current BAU for their skills. Today was the day they were meeting and going to their work.

Elijah, of course, was trying to talk to people and get a grip of his new surroundings but not many people seemed very interested.

That's when he noticed a girl who was standing by herself, a hot chocolate cup in her hand.

"Oh- Excuse me." Elijah approached her.

"Yes?" She raised a brow.

"Well, I'm new. I'm not really sure where I'm supposed to go."

"Oh, thank god, it's not just me." She let out a sigh of relief,"I'm new here too. I was hoping someone was expecting me but... No one has been here."

"Maybe we should introduce ourselves, I'll start." Elijah hummed,"My name is Elijah Dean, what about yourself?"

"Fleur Howards." Fleur put her hand out, a hint of a French accent.

"The pleasure is mine." Elijah shook her hand.

"So what's your specialty?" Fleur tilted her head.

"Oh, I worked in Hostage Negotiations. You?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Undercover Operations, its mainly for children affected by Sex Crime... I go undercover to catch predators." Fleur shrugged.

"Now that's impressive."

"Yeah?" Fleur smiled.

"Yeah, I'd be terrible at undercover stuff." Elijah shook his head.

"You get used to it." Fleur shrugged and looked at her documents,"Is your Director, Hotchner?"

"Oh, yes.' Elijah nodded,"I'm a little intimidated, I've heard he's strict."

"Me too. Maybe we should go find his office, I think we've had enough stares around here." Fleur sighed.

"Yeah, best do something useful." Elijah sighed,"But... Where is it?"

"Probably... The biggest office."

"Hm... That one." Elijah pointed upstairs.

"Then let's go." Fleur hummed and walked up the stairs, knocking on the door.

"Come in."

Fleur glanced at Elijah and walked in,"Hi sir, I'm Fleur Howards."

"And I'm Dean, Elijah Dean." Elijah followed her lead.

"You're the new agents, correct?" Hotchner asked.

"Yes, sorry we're late. We never got told where we were meant to go." Fleur shook her head.

"Well, you're in the right place now.' Hotchner nodded,"We're going to brief everyone in the conference room soon, you can meet everyone there."

"Right. Where... Will we put our stuff?"

"There should be two free desks downstairs." Hotchner pointed,"Take your pick."

"Thank you." Fleur smiled and turned around, walking out.

"I'll- Yeah. See you soon, sir." Elijah nodded before following Fleur.

"Which one would you like?" Fleur nodded.

"Oh, ladies first. I don't mind."

"Wow, a gentleman." Fleur chuckled as she put her stuff on a desk.

"Of course, I was raised well." Elijah smiled.

"So what made you want to be an agent?" Fleur began unpacking.

"I... Well, I guess I wanted to help people, be a hero for someone."

"Yeah, me too." Fleur nodded.

"Well, we'd better hurry up with this. He said something about a conference room, right?"

"Yeah... We'll find it." Fleur scanned the room.

"So many rooms." Elijah sighed, sitting his bag on his desk.

"This is our home now." Fleur sat down.

"For the foreseeable future." Elijah nodded

That's when everyone began piling into a room upstairs.

"Oh- Are you two lost?" A blonde woman blinked as she walked out of her office.

"Yes, darling." Elijah sighed,"We're new, you see? We're not exactly sure where to go."

"Oh- Oh! You're Elijah and Fleur. I read about your files." She smiled,"I'm Garcia."

"Well Garcia, the pleasure is all mine. Could you please tell us where we need to go?" Elijah asked her.

"Yes! Follow me." Garcia smiled and began walking to the room.

"That went surprisingly well for me." Elijah nodded slowly before following after her.

"Normally a flirt?" Fleur chuckled.

"I do try my best."

"I'd rate it a... Six." Fleur nodded.

"A six is not bad for my first try here." Elijah smiled as he walked through the door.

"Everyone this is SSA Elijah Dean and SSA Fleur Howards. They're on our team now, they're new graduates from the academy." Hotch explained as they walked in.

"It's a pleasure to meet you all." Elijah nodded to the others as he sat down, so many new faces.

"This is Derek Morgan, Jennifer Jareau, Dr, Spencer Reid, Jason Gideon and Penelope Garcia." Hotch pointed to everyone.

"Glad to be here." Fleur gave a small smile, sitting down next to Morgan.

"Right. What's the case?" Elijah asked.

"This is Layla Jones from Florida, she was found in her bedroom having been suffocated in her sleep." Garcia showed pictures of a young girl, she can't have been older than seven,"And this Russell Bart, he lives forty miles south. He was found the same way." She then shown a picture of a boy no older than eight.

"So... We've got a child killer on our hands?" Morgan asked with a sigh.

"Is there anything these victims had in common? Aside from being kids?" Elijah questioned.

"So far, what I can find is; Same state, only the miles between them. However, they're both in the system, they were being fostered at the time."

"So someone is targeting children who are in the foster system?" Morgan raised a brow.

"Seems like it." Fleur nodded.

"Right, our first point of action will be heading to the most recent crime scene." Hotch told them.

"That's Layla." JJ nodded.

"Jet up in twenty." Gideon got up.

Elijah nodded and smiled. He hadn't been on a plane in years!

*********************************

"So where are you two from?" JJ sat down on the jet.

"Originally I'm from England but then I moved to Colorado when I was... Must've been turning nine." Elijah told her,"Came to Virginia when I was recently eighteen."

"And I'm from France, I moved to the states about the same age." Fleur took a drink of water.

"Well, I'm sure you'll both make great additions to the team." Morgan smiled at the pair.

"Thanks Morgan." Fleur hummed.

"So... Dr Reid, right?" Elijah turned to the thin man beside Morgan,"You've been quiet, tell me more about you."

Reid looked away from his book,"Well what would you like to know?"

"Just- I want to know about you. I like getting to know people."

"Ask me any question." Reid shrugged.

"Oh, don't get him started." Gideon chuckled.

"Talkative then?" Elijah raised a brow.

"That's one way to put it." Morgan smiled.

"I have an IQ of 187, an eidetic memory and I can read 20,000 words per minute." Reid explained.

"So a genius." Fleur hummed.

"I don't believe that intelligence can be accurately quantified but yes, I'm a genius. So honestly, any question you do ask me... I can most likely answer." Reid turned back to Elijah.

"Well, what's your PhD in doctor?"

"My PhD's are Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering but I also have BA's in Psychology, Sociology and I'm in the process of getting my Philosophy degree."

Elijah was at a loss for words,"I failed chemistry twice in high school... But needless to say, I am thoroughly impressed."

"Thank you." Reid smiled.

Elijah smiled, looking around at the team. Everyone was just so... Nice.

"Alright, when we land I'm gonna have Morgan and Fleur together going to the first victims house and Reid and Elijah can take the second victims House. The rest of us can head to the police station." Hotch appointed everyone.

*********************************

"It's a nice house, quaint." Morgan sighed as he and Fleur approached.

"The family have money... Maybe it was an attack towards the parents?" Fleur suggested.

"Could be." Morgan agreed as he knocked on the door.

"Can I help you?" A man answered the door.

"We're with the FBI." Morgan showed his badge,"Special Agent Morgan and Agent Howards."

"I've already spoken to the police." He waved them off.

"Sir, we need to ask some questions about your daughter." Fleur sighed.

"There's been a second child and we believe the cases are connected." Morgan told him.

"There is?" He stopped.

"A boy, forty miles south." Morgan nodded.

"Oh god... Come on in." He opened the door.

Morgan nodded as he walked in. The house, it looked like a normal family home... There were still pictures of Layla, happy.

"So how long had you fostered Layla?" Fleur looked about.

"We'd been looking after her for... Well, just over two years." Travis told them.

"What about her birth family? They still about? Anyone that might want to harm Layla?" Fleur asked.

"She was orphaned, parents died in a car accident." He shook his head,"But she was only seven, she didn't have any enemies."

"What about you and your wife?"

"We get along with all our neighbors, there's no current family drama... We don't understand who would want to hurt her."

They nodded.

"Can we take a look at Layla's room? Just so we can see if there's anything that the others have missed?" Morgan raised a brow.

"Of course, it's at the top of the stairs.' Travis nodded.

Fleur walked up the stairs, going into the room. It was all a little girl could want.

"Bed made, toys, butterfly wallpaper." Morgan scanned the room,"Nothing... Suspicious at all."

Fleur crouched down next to her toys,"She has full sets of each toy."

"Haven't been touched since what happened."

"However... There's one that isn't full." Fleur looked at the set of dolls, all different coloured,"One's been taken. He's taking trophies?"

"It's sick... But not uncommon."

"Maybe Elijah and Reid might find something similar." Fleur shrugged.

"I have a bad feeling that they might." Morgan sighed.

"Poor girl." Fleur looked around,"This room was what I wanted when I was a kid."

"It's perfect."

"Did you want a pink room?" Fleur joked.

"Oh, of course I did." Morgan chuckled,"And the butterfly wallpaper."

"Even the dollies?" Fleur fixed them.

"Who wouldn't want that?"

"Is there anything else we can see?"

"Well, I don't think we'll find much else."

"Okay. We should head then." Fleur nodded.

"We'll let the family have some time away from us." Morgan headed for the door.

"Yeah.." Fleur sighed.

*********************************

"Its just such a... Normal looking house." Elijah sighed.

"You never know what goes on inside." Reid shrugged.

"True that, sir." Elijah nodded as he knocked on the door.

"You don't need to call me sir." Reid shook his head.

"Oh- Sorry, bad habit." Elijah chuckled.

That's when Russell's mother opened the door,"Who are you?"

"Hi Ma'am, we're with the FBI. I'm Dr Spencer Reid and this is Agent Elijah Dean. We just want to ask some questions about your son, Russell." Reid explained.

"I don't want to talk about that."

"Ma'am, it's actually quite important. We believe it may be connected to another case." Elijah told her.

"What other case?" Russell's mum asked.

"The case of Layla Jones, it happened 40 miles north of here." Elijah told her.

"Did the same thing happen to her?" She raised a brow.

"If you mean killed, yes." Reid nodded.

"Oh... Come on in." She stood back, letting them in.

Elijah followed her but something struck him... There were no photos of Russell. Anywhere.

"You didn't take pictures of Russell?" Reid looked around.

"Oh- We did. We took them down not long ago." She shook her head.

"The memories too painful?" Elijah asked,"Was he your only foster?"

"No, no. We fostered loads." She shrugged, showing pictures of the other children.

"How long had you been looking after Russell then?"

"Just a few years, maybe... Three?"

"And you decided not to keep any pictures of him up?" Elijah raised a brow.

"No... He wasn't much of a poser." She looked away.

"Do you know of anyone who's want to hurt you? Or Russell?" Reid asked.

"Well my husband has been in a lot of bar fights." Sally hummed,"Maybe that."

"Any names? Anything?"

"Not at the top of my head."

"Mind if we check out Russell's room? It gives us a better look into his life." Reid gestured to the stairs.

"Oh, sure. Knock yourself out."

Reid nodded and walked upstairs, looking for the room that had 'Russell' on the door and walking inside. Elijah looked around as they entered. Blue walls, a made bed. It was a little barron, but it was still decent.

"This looks... Okay." Reid ran his hands across the desk.

"Little empty but understandable if they're raising more children." Elijah knelt by a small pile of toys,"Cars, good choice."

"I never liked this stuff." Reid shook his head.

"More into your reading?" Elijah asked.

"Oh definitely." Reid nodded.

"I didn't have much.' Elijah shrugged,"But I did find myself reading often."

"Who's your favourite author?"

"Now that is a difficult question." Elijah nodded slowly,"I enjoy Michael Morpurgo books."

"I do enjoy him sometimes." Reid agreed.

"We're getting side-tracked." Elijah quickly shook his head as he put the cars back,"Hang on... He's missing one."

"Missing one of his cars? Do you think he just doesn't have a complete set yet?"

"It's not entirely impossible for a young boy to lose a toy." Elijah shrugged,"But I feel like he'd be very careful with them, especially if he has so little."

"So... It could be that the Unsub is taking trophies." Reid realised.

Elijah shuddered,"I never like it when they do that. Imagine just... Killing a child and then taking a toy of theirs as a keepsake."

"That's the mind of criminals, for you." Reid scanned the room.

"Nothing else seems out of place."

"So that's all we got?" Reid sighed.

"Pretty much."

"Think we're done here?" Reid turned to him.

"I'd say so." Elijah nodded as he stood up.

*********************************

"You sure this is the place?" Elijah asked the group.

"Yeah." Gideon nodded, putting his bulletproof vest on.

Another young boy, Andrew Stevens, was taken to this building by their suspect. A hostage situation.

"Right, this is your time to shine." Morgan patted Elijah's back, handing him the phone to call the Unsub.

"I'll try my best." Elijah sighed, the safety of this child rested on his shoulders,"Mr Craig? This is Agent Elijah Dean with the FBI. I just want to talk."

"Well I don't!" Daryl Craig answered, he had Andrew with him, a knife to his throat.

"Mr Craig, you don't want to do this. I know that you're hurting, but hurting these children will not ease your pain." Elijah shook his head.

"What do they have which I don't?"

"Mr Craig, these children have families. I'm sorry that you never got that chance but please, don't take it away from them."

"I was just like them! Why couldn't I get that?"

"Life isn't fair, Daryl. Sometimes things just don't work out." Elijah told him,"But those children didn't deserve to be hurt."

"They should get the same treatment I got... It's not fair." He loosened his grip on Andrew.

"I know, Daryl... But you need to let go of Andrew, let him go home." Elijah pleaded,"You don't want anymore kids to feel like you do. Alone. Scared. Helpless."

Daryl focused on Elijah, allowing Andrew to run.

Fleur quickly ran forward and took Andrew, hugging his head,"You're safe now."

"Thank you, Daryl. Now just come out with your hands raised where we can see them." Elijah instructed.

It took a second, before Daryl put the knife down and walked out.

Elijah sighed and switched off the phone, turning around,"Did I do good?"

"You did great kid." Gideon patted his back.

"And Andrew's safe. Just a safety check then he can go back to his family." Morgan told him.

"Thank you, sir." Elijah nodded to him, his hands still shaky.

"Hey- You're okay. First cases are always hard." Reid assured him.

"It's- Adrenaline." Elijah shook his head,"I mean, I always get nervous before stuff like this. If I say the wrong thing? God knows what could happen."

"But the main thing is, you saved Andrew. He made it out unharmed."

"Yeah- Yeah, you're right."

"Job good done." Fleur smiled.

"Can we go now?" JJ asked.

"Of course, coffee?" Elijah hummed.

"Coffee and pizza sounds good." Fleur hummed.

"Well then, what are we waiting for?" Elijah smiled.

"Off we go." JJ clapped.
