Chapter 1
"Wake up!" A yell cut through my dream, which, needless to say, was a bad one. I opened my eyes, and two faces loomed up above me. One with only one brown eye and light brown hair, the other with grey eyes and golden-blond hair.
"Happy birthday, Seaweed Brain," Annabeth leaned over and kissed my face. Tyson gathered me up in a bear hug and yelled "HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROTHER!!!!" as I blinked sleepily, the cobwebs of sleep still not completely gone. Annabeth snickered, and I realized that I wasn't wearing anything except for my boxers. "Oh, Styx," I cursed, causing Tyson to drop me back on the bed.
"Okay, Kelp Head, we'll get out of here so you can dress," my Wise Girl laughed and dragged Tyson out, even before I asked her to. I swear, I think that girl can read my mind. I got out of bed, put on my usual jeans and camp shirt, and grabbed Riptide from the bedside table. Then I saw the white envelope that was lying next to the lamp. It was addressed to me, and after a minute of stupidly staring at it, I realized it was from my mom. I grabbed it and raced out the door, hoping that breakfast wasn't over.
I arrived, panting, in the dining pavilion. To my surprise, my friends from Camp Jupiter were also seated around the table usually reserved for the 7. "Hi, Perce!" Hazel waved at me, Frank beside her. Both were dressed casually, though Frank was wearing his purple cape and praetor's badge. It was still strange to see him taking on the role that both Jason and I held before him, even though a year had passed.
"Speak of the devil!" Jason yelled, beckoning to me with a smile. "Happy b-day, bro." I blushed, still not understanding how I could have forgotten my birthday. I seated myself between him and Annabeth, and asked my plate for some blue pancakes. After sacrificing one for my dad, I doused the rest in both chocolate and maple syrup and started chowing down.
Annabeth tapped my shoulder and pointed at a dark-haired girl wearing a purple shirt. "Reyna?" This morning is full of surprises. "What in the name of the twelve Olympians are you doing here? If both you and Frank are here, then who's in charge of Camp Jupiter?" Reyna smiled mischievously, which is totally unlike her, and replied: "I came to celebrate your birthday, obviously, and I left Dakota in charge."
"Dakota?" I stared at her, gaping. Dakota may be the nicest centurion in the legion, but he has a drinking problem- he's a Kool-Aid addict- and he is absolutely ADHD even without that. He's even more hyper than Leo on three cups of caffeinated coffee, and that's pretty darn ADHD even for a demigod. "I figured that they could use a break. May as well have fun, right? Hazel shadow-traveled us here."
With that comment, Reyna walked to Chiron and whispered something in his ear. That is no easy feat, because Chiron is a centaur, after all, but Reyna can do anything. I learned that long ago. Reyna ran off and Chiron trotted over to me. "Happy birthday, Perseus." I nodded, and he cantered off towards the lake. I kissed Annabeth, because I wanted to, and pulled the envelope out of my pocket. My name was written on it in my mom's elegant writing. I lifted the flap and pulled out the card.
