The Black Magic of Indonesia

Introduction -

As a fact, Indonesia is a country where black magic is still being openly practiced. But the Indonesian government has made strict laws to restrict people from practicing black magic. Still in small villages and markets, you will find people who on demand can perform black magic for you.

About their magic -

The people practicing black magic are called Dakun. We can say that Dakun is a shaman or tantriks or spirit medium who can talk to spirits. Dakun is an expert in black magic and many people say that they are traditional healers too. Now, mostly Dakun didn't promote black magic because they were helpers. But as time passed, many traditional healers started going corrupt. Most Dakun are famous for their black magic and most of them are frauds or scammers.

A big population of Dakun is found in the Jawa Island.

But the Dakun found in Madura Island is said to be evil by the people of the island. The locals believe that the Dakun community which lives on Madura Island is dangerous and their appearance is weird and they have red eyes.

History -

Now, how long is the history and tradition of Dakun is really hard but we can safely say that the traces of these traditions is very long. For Dakun, Indonesia has both respect and fear. During the Pre-colonial era, Dakun had created so much respect and terror in people that they never gave or were forced to give tax.

Black Magic in Indonesia is so popular that here and there is any house you will at least find one black magic story. But how many of these stories are true is kind of hard to find.

Cases -

Now as we all know, many people claim to have supernatural powers and help others without any reason or profit. But on the other hand, there is also no shortage of people who use different tricks or naive people and scam them a lot.

The same goes with Dakun also in Indonesia. There have been many cases, where a Dakun tried to take advantage of a female in the ritual or some give drugs in the name of hypnosis. In one of the cases, a Dakun tried to molest a little girl saying that she was possessed and that he was trying to perform a ritual on her to cast the Devil out of her body.

Now guys I am not blaming the whole community of Dakun but some play with people's emotions and sometimes even commit heinous crimes like murder, rape, etc.

Paranormal Facts -

The tradition of Dakun is really old and not only the locals believe in them but even big Indonesian politicians believe in them, e.g. Former President of Indonesia - Sukarno, Former President of Indonesia - Suharto, Former President of Indonesia - Megawati Sukarnoputri, Former Vice President of Indonesia - Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX and Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and many more.

One of the strange cases is that they are related to Ninjas. This case was seen in the year 1998 and it is called '1998 East Java Ninja Scare'. Actually, in 1998, the people of East Java had this sudden fear in them that these Ninja sorcerers or someone with magical powers is targeting them. During that year, some 250 or 300 other sorcerers were mysteriously murdered and many religious leaders were also assassinated. And all blame was given to these Ninjas, who were always covered in black dresses from head to toe, and had evil powers. These Ninjas were quite famous for killing famous personalities.

If we talk about Indonesian Black Magic, then the most important name would be 'Rangda', Demon Queen of black magic. According to Balinese tradition or mythology, 'Rangda' which means widow, was an evil witch who ate infants or newborn children. Now one image of 'Rangda' is seen as evil, the other image of 'Rangda' is of a protective goddess in the city of Bali. Rangda's image is also in the form of the famous legendary witch of Indonesia, 'Calon Arang'.

The story of Calon Arang is that she was a 10th century's legendary widow witch who touched skies in black magic and using her power she would destroy crops and spread diseases in her area. She also had a daughter named, 'Ratna', who was very beautiful but no one would marry her due to her mother's mischiefs and doings. This angered Calon more and, the next day she kidnapped a girl and sacrificed her to Goddess Durga. When the king came to know about this, he asked his minister to settle this out. The minister did some research and then married his son to Calon's daughter. Calon had a magic book that was taken by the minister and kept hidden. Due to this, Calon's power slowly deteriorated and her reign came to an end.

The story of 'Rangda' is represented in Balinese tradition by Wayang Kulit or leather shadow puppet theatre tradition. In this tradition, the puppets are made of real leather. The word Kulit means skin and, this is made by buffalo skin or leather, and horns of these buffaloes are used to make handles of these puppets.

Conclusion -

So, in Indonesia, people have so strongly believed in shamans or Dakun that they are treated like some mystical celebrity. People have fear of witches and demons. Although, like in old days, there is no more witch-hunting. Though, there are one or two cases in a year, where due to misconception between the people a lady is killed by the mobs. The Indonesian government is trying hard to find these people who create misconceptions and punish them.

Though, the reality is that half of Indonesia's population stills believes in black magic and performs them directly or indirectly. Every country has its own magic and this one is of Indonesia.
