Bella's POV
I woke up to a fierce throbbing in my head, and groaned.
"Bella?" I heard a familiar voice ask. Turning my head to the source of the voice, and opening my eyes, I gasped.
"Edward?" I asked, surprised to see him. Where was I? What was he doing here? I thought vaguely. I took in the whitewashed walls, and the clean, antiseptic scent, the soft white mattress under me, and knew. I was in a hospital.
"Are you okay, Bella?" Edward inquired. "Do you remember what happened?" It all suddenly came rushing back to me. Jessica's betrayal, Edward miraculously saving me. I had seen Edward laughing with his siblings in the cafeteria, which was nowhere near where I was sitting. How could he have known where I was in time to save me?
"Jessica," I breathed, her accusing words still fresh in my mind, " She . . . "
Edward's golden eyes burned with rage. "I heard what she said. I was standing near you guys, getting some fresh air." He explained quickly. Something about the tone of his voice nagged me. It was too defensive of his actions to be the truth. He was definitely hiding something. Before I could ask him though, the door burst open.
"Bella! Honey, are you okay? Poor thing, slipped down a ramp by accident. You have to be more careful!" Mom exclaimed, while fussing over me. Fell down the ramp by accident? I wondered. Oh of course, it would be nicer not to let Mom know that it was Jessica, because she would sue them, and it was my fault in the first place, by coming to school and stealing Jessica's popularity.
"Yeah . . . " I replied. "I'm fine. My head just hurts a bit." Out of the corner of my eye, I notice Edward sneak out of the room.
"You poor baby," she gushed, "The doctor says you can leave in an hour. Then I'll drive you home, and you can rest, okay?"
"Okay." I replied, leaning my head back on my pillow and closing my eyes.
Edward's POV
I sat next to her hospital bed, waiting for her to wake up. After a while, she turned over and groaned.
"Bella?" I asked, not sure if she was awake yet.
"Edward?" she gasped, as if surprised to see me. She glanced around the room, taking it all in. Realization dawned in her eyes.
"Are you okay, Bella?" I inquired anxiously, "Do you remember what happened?" She looked confused for a second, and I almost thought that she had no idea what had happened, and hopefully had no recollection of me saving her. But then, understanding showed on her face. She remembered.
"Jessica," she breathed, "She . . ." Bella began, unable to continue that thought. Remembering Jessica's mean thoughts, I shuddered to think of what she had said to Bella.
Wanting to go kill Jessica right now, I simply saved Bella from an explanation without thinking, by saying, "I heard what she said. I was standing near you guys, getting some fresh air." I internally smacked myself. I shouldn't have said that. Our secret could be revealed! I had felt her eyes on me in the cafeteria, during lunch, not 5 minutes before her 'accident', laughing as though I had not a care in the world. Why would I have a reason to leave and get fresh air?I had looked so happy. Bella looked as though she knew I was lying, and was about to ask, but I was saved by the door bursting open, and her mother rushing in.
"Bella! Honey, are you okay? Poor thing, slipped down a ramp by accident. You have to be more careful!" her mom exclaimed, while fussing over her. Bella looked confused for a second, and I hoped that she would accept it and not reveal that we had just told that story to the hospital, so that she wouldn't have to go through the long process of talking to the police and all of that tiring stuff.
"Yeah . . . " she replied hesitantly, "I'm fine. My head just hurts a bit." Leaving her to catch up with her mom, I slipped out of the room. I left the hospital and just sat in my silver Volvo, only accompanied by my thoughts and music. The nagging voice in the back of my head asked, What if you weren't there to save her? Everyone would be so much better off. You being attracted to her is dangerous. She could have found out your family's secret! If you left her to die, your family would be safer. You can't even read her thoughts! You don't know if she's dangerous. Shaking off these accusing thoughts, I counter, If I didn't the lure of spilt blood could have happened, making everyone more likely to guess our secret! I could have revealed everyone by drinking her! Or Jasper or Emmet, or Rosalie, or even Alice drinking her. The nasty voice in my head argued, saying, You are too attracted to her, you could not have possibly drank her blood, and the others have self-control. You are the only one her blood sings to, and you would not be capable of drinking her. Blocking that horrible voice out of my head, I shuddered at the image of what Bella would have been, had I not saved her. Many scenarios flashing through my head. Crushed by a speeding car, going head over heels in the forest, and so on. Shaking my head to clear it, I turn on my engine, and speed home.
