Chapter 5- Betrayal
Jessica's POV
Bella. I hated that girl. Just when my popularity was about to go up, she just had to start school. As soon as she came, everyone knew her. Everyone was talking about the poor paralyzed girl in a wheelchair. Even all the seniors knew about her, and we were merely just sophomores in high school. Bella hated all the attention, as she had told me many times. Ugh! The world was just not fair. Why not notice the girl who is Bella's best friend? Why not notice a girl who doesn't mind the attention, like me?! I had befriended this girl, in hopes of becoming the poor, popular girl's best friend. We were in fact, best friends, but everyone just seemed to overlook that. I was just too unimportant, with nothing to make me stand out, unlike a poor, paralyzed girl in a wheelchair. I fumed.
Isabella Swan was in need of an accident. Perhaps the steep ramp going off the side of the school, straight onto the road would work. It went off into the road, and into the steep mountain filled with untamed plants and wildlife. It would be a tragedy. She had been talking with her best friend near the ramp, and was laughing really hard at something, and leaned back. Her wheelchair's wheels weren't locked into place, because there was no need, but her sudden change of weight had sent her wheelchair hurtling down the steep ramp, where she was either crushed by a car, or fell off into the steep forest and died. Her best friend was devastated, and everyone would know the girl who had been with the poor, girl in her last moments. That would be the perfect cover story. We would actually just be near the ramp during lunch, and I would 'accidentally' knock her wheelchair down the ramp, where she would die, hopefully.
No, no, no, . . . then she would be too clueless. She had to die wounded, knowing the pain she had caused me. I would tell her, in the most painful way possible, what she had done to me, then push her off, saying she deserved it. She was so kindhearted, that she would probably just accept her death as punishment anyways. Even if she survived, she probably wouldn't tell anyone. She was just too kind.
Bella's POV
"Bella! Over here!" I turned around at the sound of my name to see Jessica waving me over. I rolled over to her.
"Hey, what's up?" I asked.
"Oh, nothing much. Wanna just hang out here for lunch instead of in the cafeteria? It's a nice day to be outside instead of stuffed into a noisy cafeteria." Jessica suggested.
"Okay, sure. Let's leave our bags here and go get lunch." I decided.
After finishing my lunch, I stood up and was about head back to the cafeteria to put my tray back, but was stopped by a serious looking Jessica.
Attempting to lighten up the mood, I asked, "So, how was prom? Did you have fun with Mike?"
"Bella . . . I need to talk to you." Jessica said, looking down at her feet. A feeling of unease crept through me.
"Okay . . . " I said hesitantly.
"Look, I'm going to be very honest with you, alright? All the popular girls graduated last year. The best candidate for the new popular girl was me. Just as I was starting to become popular, do you know what happened? I'll tell you what happened. You happened. You came Forks High. Everyone knew you. Everyone knew you, a poor, crippled sophomore in a wheelchair. Of course, naturally, almost everyone would know popular seniors. But a sophomore? A SOPHOMORE?! Why would these seniors know a sophomore?" she ranted, her voice rising into hysteria, "You took everything from me! You will suffer for this!"
I sat there, frozen. I thought I had known Jessica. But, I didn't know this Jessica. This angry Jessica. I knew the sweet girl who drove me to Port Angeles to go shopping, the sweet girl who was my best friend. But this Jessica?
"Jess, I-" I began tentatively.
"No!" she snarled. "Don't 'Jess' me. I don't CARE that you don't like the attention. It doesn't matter! What matters is that you took everything from me. You will pay for this." With that, she shoved me down the steep ramp going down into the road.
They say terrifying things happen in slow motion. In reality, it doesn't. Instead of slow, it was more like through my rush of adrenaline, I took in all the details more clearly. I noticed many things at once. The wind rushed towards me, chilling me to the bone, as I was only wearing a T-shirt and shorts. It was utterly terrifying. I felt like I was going 100 miles per hour, but not in a thrilling way. I was more like I was plunging to my death, even though it didn't go straight down, it was just a steep ramp. Then, all of a sudden, I crashed into something stone hard and ice-cold.
"Wha-" I started, but stopped when I looked up to see a pair of golden-brown eyes. "Edward?" I asked, before I was overwhelmed by darkness.
Edward's POV
I was finally back at school after my long hunting trip. Luckily, I hadn't seen Bella yet, because it was still lunch, and biology was after lunch. But, I was still worried about biology. How would I act when she came to sit next to me? Her scent . . . no, I must not think about this right now. I scolded myself. Hmmm, I wonder where she is now? Looking up, I see Jessica scurrying out the cafeteria door, no doubt to where Bella was. Bored, I started picking out thoughts of the people around me.
'Tyler is just so cute . . .'
'When will this months magazine come out?'
'Uh-oh, there was homework in Mr. Morris's class?!'
'I'm going to push her off the ramp . . .'
Wait what? I wondered, Push who off a ramp? Curious, I continued going through, surprisingly, Jessica's mind, looking for more clues. This confused me, for Jessica was more like my sister Rosalie, who was shallow and self-absorbed. I would never have thought about Jessica being a vengeful one.
'That dirty, no good girl. She deserves it. She took my popularity! Goodbye Bella . . .'
Through her mind, I saw the steep ramp that went off the side of the school . . . which went into the road, which went into the forest. I swore loudly, causing strange looks from my siblings, and dashed out the door at an inhuman speed. I immediately ran to the ramp, and saw Bella hurtling down at breakneck speed, and Jessica watching her, smirking. I don't know what possessed me to do it. If she was dead, we'd all be better off. I wouldn't be lured by her scent, but I would be guilty, knowing that I could have saved her. In a split second decision, I dashed down the ramp and stopped her decent, just a few feet away from the road. She looked up at me, with wonder.
"Wha-?' she began, but suddenly recognizing me, she breathed out my name, "Edward?", before slumping forward, unconscious. She must have bumped against me harder than I thought, with that speed going down the ramp.
Looking up, I saw Alice descending the ramp gracefully, with Jasper, Emmett, and Rosalie behind her. Knowing that she had probably consulted this problem through a vision, I asked her, "Will she be alright?"
"Yep, just a slight concussion." Alice replied.
"Okay, well, I'll take her to the hospital in my car . . . " I declared, my voice trailing off uncertainly.
"Sure," Alice agreed enthusiastically, "But you better come back to pick us up."
"Okay." I concluded, "I'll see you guys later."
