Chapter 1- First Day
Bella's POV
Waking up with a jolt, I suddenly remembered, today was my first day of school! I have been homeschooled ever since I was 11, when an accident left my body paralyzed below the waist. My condition was not something the doctors could heal. My family wasn't poor, but we didn't have the money to pay for the advanced leg braces that I would be able to walk with. So, I just used a wheelchair to get around.
"Bella, honey, get up! You don't want to be late to school!" My mom yelled from the kitchen.
"Okay, coming." I replied.
Swinging my legs out of bed, I carefully lowered my body into my wheelchair, and wheeled myself into the kitchen.
"Mornin' Bella" said my dad, as he glanced up from the morning newspaper after I rolled in, "You excited about going to school?"
"Yeah, I guess." I answered somberly, looking down.
"What's the matter?" asked my parents. I just shook my head.
"Nothing." My doubts were running around in my brain. What if they don't like me? What if they think I am weird? I've had enough of those pitiful or interested looks when someone saw me in a wheelchair, and I was tired of it. Even though I had lived in Forks, Washington since I was 11, I still barely knew anyone my age here, since I mostly just kept to myself in the house.
----------------30 minutes later ----------------
"Have fun Bella!" my mom called from the rolled down car window, "I'll pick you up at 3:00, honey." I rolled my eyes. She could be so embarrassing sometimes!
I rolled into the receptionist's office, "Isabella Swan?" she asked.
"Yes." I replied.
"Here is your schedule, and school map. If you have trouble doing anything, just ask, okay?"
"Okay." I said. Everyone who saw me in my wheelchair just assumed I was so helpless, it was plain annoying.
As I rolled down the halls, maneuvering through the crowds of students, I noticed, out of the corners of my eyes, that almost everyone were stopping what they were doing to stare at me. Then, the whispering started. Determined not to let them get on my nerves, I rolled straight into my first class without hesitation.
Most of the classes were all the same- I came in, talked to the teacher, and had class. During lunch, I sat down with a few people and made some friends. This guy in some of my morning classes- Mike Newton- invited me to sit with him and some of friends. Their names were Jessica, Angela, Ben, Lauren, and Taylor. They all seemed pretty nice, though I liked Angela the most. She didn't pry, like some of the others. They all seemed okay, just being my friends to be friends, not just because they pitied me. During gym, I just sat there and watched. But, during Bio, the guy sitting next to me was acting very strangely. When I came in, he stiffened, and when I sat down next to him, wrinkled his nose, and leaned away from me as far as possible. His hands were gripping the table so hard that the veins and tendons stood out on his pale skin. His eyes golden-brown eyes never strayed from my face for long, burning with hatred. His bronze hair was blown backwards by the fan next to me. When, the bell rang, he just about bolted and ran out.
Edward's POV
Everything was normal, up until Bio. The new girl, sitting in a wheelchair, wheeled into the only empty spot left in the room, which was right next to me. The fan blew her strong, delicious scent and chocolate brown curls in my direction and I tensed. She smelled so good. I wanted, no I needed to taste her blood. No human had ever had this effect on me before. I watched her carefully, ready to pounce and drink her blood, while her brown eyes looked at me curiously.
"Alright class, let's get started." said Mr. Banner.
I tried to focus on his lecture, but the fan kept blowing her irresistible scent in my direction. Focus I told myself. Wrinkling my nose in an unsuccessful attempt to block out the scent, I sat on the end of my chair, as far away from her as possible to avoid the temptation. I clutched at the table, tendons standing out on my pale skin, in a desperate attempt not to lock my hands around her neck and drink. The thirst consumed me, burning my throat. You can't reveal what you are. If you bite her, you will reveal your whole family. Bite her, you sentence Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, Emmett, Carlisle, and Esme to possible death and definite exposure. People will find out we exist and try to wipe our whole species out. The Volturi will get involved. Do you really want to risk that? I asked myself. YES, she smells so good, who cares if we get caught or not? I thought, but the other side of me said, Don't. You've been doing this for a century. Why stop resisting and reveal your species for one little, disabled girl. It's unwise, and not worth it.
Luckily, the bell rang at that moment, and I all but jumped out of my seat and ran out of the room to escape the mouthwatering smell and the temptation.
