Chapter 9 - Sunset

Word Count: 1205
This chapter is longer than normal.

Ink's POV

It was the last hour of my shift, closing time to be exact. I rushed back and forth from the bar to the tables as I tried to keep up with the five o'clock rush hour. Around this time was when everyone got off of work and was heading home for the night, however they seemed to enjoy making a quick stop by the cafe to get coffee or a pastry.

With how fast I was doing my job, it felt like I couldn't focus on much of anything as I needed to just get my current task over with so I can move on to the next one. The city was always so busy that sometimes I wished I lived in a different state entirely.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, the clock hand reached my favorite hour of the day. I finished up the last of my tasks before clocking out. As I walked out from the back of the cafe to leave out the front entrance, I passed Sky at the counter.

Sky: Do you want something to eat before you leave?

Me: Sorry, I have to hurry home so I can feed my cat. If I don't give him food on time, he'll think that I'm trying to starve him.

I said bye to my friend before leaving the building. The streets were busy like always, the city never slept. Tourists, merchants, business people, pretty much all walks of life lived here. Despite this city being a diverse place, it didn't hide the fact that getting home was absolute torture. I was constantly five inches away from bumping into someone or falling off the sidewalk.

'Just get home and you'll be fine.'

I thought to myself after almost crashing into a biker.

As the sun began to set, the lights of the city came to life. The electronic billboards hanging from the buildings glowed brightly and headlights of the many cars lit up the streets. It was almost inspiration for a new sketch but at the moment I was focused on getting home to feed Bean.

(Time Skip)

I dug my keys out of my pockets to unlock my door, soon opening it after locating them. When I closed the door behind me I released a breath that I didn't know I was holding. It a sigh of pure relief to be home after such a long day at work and having to fight the other people to get home.

I looked around my apartment to find any differences that could tell me if Error was here or not. Even though it was pretty easy to know when someone else was in your home, Error made it quite difficult. Since he had no decorations or personality in his apartment life I was unable to know exactly when he was here and when he wasn't.

Out from the bedroom came my dashing little cat. He sashayed towards me and sat in front of my feet, staring up at me with begging eyes. I smiled at Bean as I knew exactly what he wanted.

Me: Alright, come on.

I said defeatedly as I moved towards the kitchen. Bean began to meow loudly as if it was his own way of telling me to "hurry up". Behind a child-proof locked cabinet I kept Bean's wet food, he was too much of a diva to eat normal cat food.

After I set his bowl down I decided that I was going to take a shower before getting into comfortable clothing.

My bedroom was a quiet sanctuary that I felt safe in. I had a love-hate relationship with this city and this was a time that I hated it. Work just felt so busy and I felt exhausted from having to run around all day.

Releasing a sigh, I took off my shirt to prepare to hop in the shower. After I threw it onto the bed there was a small sense of relaxation that came to me. Who knew that just taking a shirt off can bring you so much calm. However as soon as I thought that, my peace was suddenly broken.

My bathroom door opened and I saw soon Error walk out. He was wearing a towel around his waist and was using a smaller one to dry his neck, it seemed he had the same idea of taking a shower. Once he saw me he froze in place. It was super awkward as I didn't have a shirt on and he was completely nude. The both of us were silent for several minutes until I spoke.

Me: Um... hey.

Error: Hi.

Me: I... didn't know you were.

Error: I... had the same mindset.

He was looking everywhere but me and was fidgeting with the towel he was holding. I could almost feel his anxiety from this awkwardness.

Me: I'll leave so you can get dressed.

Error: Thank you so much.

I grabbed my shirt and left the bedroom, closing the door behind me. As I replayed the moment in my head, I couldn't help but think.

'Dang, he's kind of hot.'

After a few minutes Error walked out in sweatpants and a light sweater. He shyly waved at me and sat down on the couch. After what happened I was no longer in the mood to shower so I'll just do it later tonight. I ended up joining him.

Error: What do you want to watch?

He asked, seeming to be acting normal now.

Me: I don't know. How about a cooking show?

Error: Sounds good.

We watched together, making funny comments now and then. I would have never guessed that Error actually enjoyed this type of stuff.

I glanced over at my "roommate", I noticed he was messaging his neck.

Me: What's wrong?

Error: My neck has been hurting ever since I came back from my concert earlier today. I didn't hurt myself so it can't be an injury.

Me: What about stress? I heard that singers like you are prone to it.

Error: That could be it.

Me: Oh, you know what always seems to calm me down when I'm stressed? Watching the sunset.

I motioned for him to follow me to the balcony. I pushed open the sliding glass door and conveniently found two chairs. We both took a seat and stared at the sky. I was lucky enough to have a good view of the sky which I was grateful for. We were also lucky enough to catch the last moments of the sunset, perfect timing.

The sky was becoming a beautiful orange to purple gradient as the sun set below some building tops. A light soft breeze blew, albeit a city breeze, but it felt good nonetheless. It would have been the perfect moment for me to make some coffee while Error and I watched the sun.

Error: Wow, Ink. I never knew the sunset was this pretty.

Me: What do you mean?

Error: Well I'm so busy all the time so when I get home I just pass out. I've never taken a minute to watch the sunset. Thank you for letting me experience this with you, Ink.

Me: ...

You're welcome, Error
