Chapter 23: Lines
Emily's POV:
I sat up and gasped for air. I was still in an alleyway, but this alley looked EXACTLY the opposite of the one I had previously been in.
There wasn't garbage, in fact the whole alley was brightly lit and sparkling clean.
"Welcome back." Emily smirked. "You were out for quite a while that time."
"I felt like I was being ripped into a million little pieces." I moaned and shakily stood up.
"Yeah that's normal when you first start dimension jumping." Emily helped me stand a little more steadily.
"So where are we now? This dimension looks SUPER different from the other one. Plus I can actually breath." I took of the creepy ,smiling mask.
"We're in kind of a futuristic dimension..." Emily explained. "I can't put it better than that."
"COOL!" I cried. "So is this where you need help?"
"No." Emily started walking out of the alley, so I followed her.
"Oh, well then where are we going now?" I asked.
"Another dimension." She answered.
"Uhhhhggg..." I moaned. "Will it hurt that bad EVERY time!?"
"Maybe, it doesn't hurt me..." Emily started.
"So are you like my opposite?" I asked as we walked along the sidewalk. It was hard to try and not ask questions about all the crazy things I was seeing on the streets. Like hovering cars.
"Yes." Emily replied.
"Okaaaay...well then why do you look exactly like me?" I inquired.
Emily sighed. "If I don't answer you, you're just going to keep asking so... have you ever heard of the Zöllner Illusion?"
"Uh...no?" What on earth was a Zöllner Illusion, and what did it have to do with ME?
Emily sighed and brought me over to some sort of screen that was stood around a large fountain in the center of town.
A smiley face appeared on the screen. "Hello. I am A.I.I. Your personal Artificial Intelligence Informative. How can I help you today?"
"Draw me slanted parallel lines." Emily commanded the smiley face.
The smiley disappeared and a white screen popped up with a bunch of diagonal lines.
"Okay Emily, let's say that these lines are each a different dimension you." Emily began. See how they are all EXACTLY the same?"
I nodded.
"Okay, well obviously each of the different dimension you's have slightly different personalities and make different choices than you would." Emily continued.
"So we're not all exactly the same?" I asked.
"Correct."
"But then if we aren't alike then you aren't ME." I pointed out.
"Not necessarily...if we were all exactly alike, then there would be no point to different dimensions. All the choices ever made would be the same, resulting in an exact COPY of your world." Emily turned to the screen again. "Draw the Zöllner Illusion." She commanded.
Instantly each of the lines grew a bunch of LITTLE lines sticking out of the sides.
"Now what do the lines look like?" Emily asked.
"Spiky?"
"No..." Emily slapped her forehead. "Look at the ORIGINAL lines, not the..."spikes"..."
I looked closer. "Hey! They're all slanted left and right now!"
"Actually they aren't." Emily corrected. "That's the illusion. But anyway...let's just say that now each line is slightly different. That's what all the dimension you's are like. If we didn't have unique qualities then there would be no point to us. But if we were completely different, then we wouldn't be you."
"So you're saying that my ALTERNATE me wouldn't be the exact opposite of me?" I inquired. My brain hurt, but at least I was sort of understanding what she was saying.
"Exactly." Emily nodded.
The smiley face popped back up. "Is there anything else I can help you with?"
"Yeah, what day and time is it?" I asked
"Wednesday, August fifth, 11:28 AM." The smiley face answered.
"WAH!" I cried. Then I spun around to face Emily. "I've been gone for a whole day!"
"And?"
"And Will and Sophie are probably super worried about me! Not to mention my mom and dad!" I yelled.
Emily sighed. "I REALLY need your help though...I mean, if you want to go home I guess I can take you back..."
"Well..." I looked at her pleading face. Back in my dimension, or whatever nightmare I had before meeting Will and Sophie, everyone hated me. Nobody would have helped me. "Alright...I'll help you first but can I at least tell them that I'm helping you?"
"How?" Emily smirked. "We're in another dimension remember?"
"So there's no possible way for us to message them?" I sighed.
"Nope. Sorry." Emily smiled. "But come on. Just a few more dimensions to hop through and then we're done!"
"So where's the next warp point thing?" I asked.
"Up there." Emily pointed to the top of a huge skyscraper.
Thank flip I'm not scared of heights.
