"Do you see that?" June March was standing right behind Big John, having kept up with him at an amazing speed. Their descent form the mountain had gone a let better than the first half of the day, the only talking really being the older man rushing them and June and Sarah talking to pass the time. John B was in a semi permanent contemplative state, both girls worrying about him a little bit.
"Whoa."
"Oh my god. It's just as the legend predicted it. See these four columns here? Mark the cardinal directions. And there it is. The temalacatl." June and Sarah shared a look when Big John said the word, Junes lips tightening as she tried not to laugh at the older man's amazement. He was fulfilling his dream, it was very quickly that he smile dropped hand she saw him touch the stone altar in the middle of the pillars.
"I'll be damned."
"Oh my...I cant believe it." Big John shined his flashlight across the top of the temalacatl, all of them not understanding the weight of their discovery. Junes doubt in El Dorado was beginning to clear up, just knowing that this thing was actually here. "Oh, it's as real as the day, boy. A thousand years of astronomy, mathematics is all contained in this. This proves that the Kalinago were every bit equal to the Mayans. This...this is gonna rewrite everything." June and John B shared a look, Sarah joining in it at they weight of the discovery really dawned on them. They had discovered something purely and amazingly historical, something they world hadn't seen before. Junes fingers ran across the carving in the stone and she felt powerful for the first time in awhile, her heartbeat pounding as she realized this is what a success felt like.
"Oh you see that? This right here. That's where she goes."
"Yeah, yeah. Get that thing out. Get the gnomon out. Come on."
"That's where the gnomon goes." Big John was beaming with excitement and exhilaration, holding the gnomon in his hands. "Alright this is it. This is the moment boy."
"Nice and easy. Nice and easy."
"That's right. Boy, look at this. Please please please." He placed the gnomon in the spot and it fit, a laugh leaving his lips as he finally did it. He had been waiting for this moment his entire life. "Oh my God."
John B handed him the medallion and Big John looked down at it with shaky hands, a small circular slot catching his attention. John B nodded and he placed the medallion into the circle, fitting perfectly. Big John laughed again and June felt her heart leap at the fact that whatever it was that was happening was happening correctly.
"Alright listen up. When the moon hits its zenith, that's when the action starts. Okay, John B, I want you on translation. Sarah, gather up some mud and June you mark the glyph so we know what to translate. You got it? And be quick okay?"
"Hey, hey. Aye, aye, captain. Relax." John B tried to ease his dads remarks, but Big John wasn't having it.
"We only got one shot at this. I don't want any back talk, okay?"
"Okay, okay." June couldn't stop staring at the gnomon, trying to figure out what it possibly could mean. She was new to all this El Dorado lord, she had close to no idea what was even going on. The moonlight hit the top of the statue so one ethan June expected, the girl stepping back as she watched the glyphs glow. She wasn't too sure what to do, she felt like she didn't know where she fit here. A glyph shined on the whole other side of the statue than they were on, June watching as they seemed to not see it.
"There's one on this side. It's a...it looks lien some kind of snake or something-" Soon enough this was a group effort, all four of them translating as Big John wrote it down.
"Earth, earth. Wealth and earth. Okay, I think I got this first one sorted. ' Brave traveler, if you have wisdom, I'll reveal the wealth of the earth'."
"Wealth of the Earth."
"Holy shit." June said, her eyes wide as she stared down at the gnomon.
"Wealth of the Earth! That's ...thats El Dorado!" The glyphs began to glow off of the statue and they all were quick to try and translate them, the glowing leading to the medallion. Finally the medallion glowed a bright golden hue, all of them looking down at it with wide eyes.
"Hand, hand! What is hand?"
"I don't...I don't know!" Sarah said, looking frantically over the page.
"Oh I know this. Hand means...hand means home." For the first time since the medallion and come into her life she realized there was a hand on it, Big John deducting that the hand was pointing towards El Dorado. Towards home. "It's showing us the direction to El Dorado!"
Big John hurried in that direction, thunder clapping overhead and pulling June out of her trance. She looked up at the sky and got a bad feeling in her entire body, Sarah seeming to get the same one.
"What we got, old man?"
"I...I have no tongue but I'm always speaking." Thunder rumbled again and June couldn't help but get the feeling that they weren't alone, the conversation carrying on as she looked towards the forest surrounding them.
"What does it mean?" Sarah asked, pulling June attention back to them.
"I..." Big John started, but then his eyes lifted to Sarah and he hesitated. She could see thoughts processing behind his eyes and the dark look he held made her feel even worse about the situation.
"Dad just spit it out."
"I'm—I'm still working it out." Big John started to put the notebook away, June quickly realizing what was going on now.
"Dad what are you doing?"
"I've got all the notes. I...we know which way we're going it's..." Sarah cut him off, June feeling her chest tighten as she spoke.
"It's because I'm here. This is about me, isn't it? Big John, I am not my father. And I'm not my brother. You can trust me." Sarah tried to convince him, but he was too jaded by his hatred for her family to consider it too much. June watched on in contempt before the thunder rumbled again, and her head turned towards the forest as she felt the paranoia envelope her.
"What does it say? Hey, look at me. We all just went through hell and back to get here. Tell me what it says. This is what we're doing huh? Just gonna use us. Just gonan pull us in and push us out, like you did with mom, just like you did with me. Look, now you're doing it to Sarah." John B said, June watching as his tone escalated.
"John B, stop." Sarah tried to intervene but he was already too upset, his voice raising a s he continued on.
"No! Tell us what it is! What does it say dad?! What does it say?!" The rain overhead started to drop and the sound of it must've masked the footsteps approaching them, June jumping when another familiar voice jumped into the conversation.
"Yes John! What does it say?! Huh? Tell us all, John." Singh stood above them, June moving to Big Johns side as they all looked at the man. Singh was holding a gun, June feeling herself begin to get sick at the fact that they were once again in a situation like this. "What is the secret of the gnomon?! Ah-ah-ah! I wouldn't do that if I were you John! I have you surrounded! You'd do best to toss over your gun now! Careful now, Mr. Routledge. Careful. Very good."
Guards descended from the trees and June felt all her hope disappear, her body starting to head into her fight or flight mode. Her terrified eyes scanned for any way out of this, any open areas where she could run or try to get away.
"Ward was gonna send up a flare to warn us? Yeah sure."
"Hey what did you do with my father?" Sarah yelled, but June could already see where this was going, her eyes closing as she felt another blow of betrayal coming. She should've expected this one...her heart aches for Sarah immediately.
"I'm right here, Sarah! I'm okay! I'm right here." Ward appeared out of the trees beside them and June felt her entire body run cold, upset that she had been correct.
"Dad. Dad, what did you do?" Sarah started, realizing what had happened.
"No,no,no Sarah. I made a deal, Sarah. I had to."
"A deal?" Sarah exclaimed.
"Yes. I did a favor for Mr.Singh. And in return he's gonna give me all I want."
"You think this is a favor?!"
"I want you safe! Isn't that right Mr. Singh?!"
"Mr. Cameron is correct. When we're finished, you can go with your father. Safe and sound. And you too can live, you know, John, if you just give me what I want! The way to El Dorado!"
"Sorry Carlos! I cant do it! And you ain't gonna kill me. 'Cause I got the treasure. It's right up here."
"John, John, John, John, John. You know what the Guajiro kind did to the slaves that mined El Dorado, John? He had them executed, so they could never reveal the secret location, and he did it here, you know, on the Stone of Solana. And I think it's important, very important that we honor tradition." Guards walked forward and grabbed John B by the bag, holding a gun up to his head. A guard came up and knocked Junes knees out, the girl falling to them and a gun being pressed to the back of her head. It was now that she realized her life depended on Big John, the girl closing her eyes and letting the rain wash over her skin as she pretty much tried to accept that these were the last few moments of her life. She tried not to shake too hard, knowing the symbolism now of her being executed here. "Now tell me John! What does it say?"
Junes mind raced as she tried to figure out anything, anything at all, her breaths shallow and her body shaking. This was it. This was it.
"Tell him. Please." John B pleaded, a gun being pressed directly to his forehead. June looked back at Big John with pleading eyes and then to John B, a sickening feeling in her as she realize she had been hesitating way to long considering his sons life was on the line.
"Make your choices John!"
"Dad just tell him!" John B pleaded looking at his dad in fear.
"John. Jesus, John. Tell him!" Ward pleaded now, appalled by his silence even when his son was about to be slaughtered. Not only his son, but Junes life was in his hands, and she didn't count on him at all to try and not let her die. June held her breath but Sarah took action, jumping forwards and knocking a guard down. She fell to the ground and the guard held the gun up to her, Junes eyes widening as she watched what was about to happen. Sarah whimpered and then a gunshot rang out, June jumping as she looked to where it came from. Behind the guard Ward was holding his gun, John B taking this opportunity to elbow the guard behind him. The shouting ensued, June taking this as her chance to flee. She scrambled up form her spot, practically sliding out of view and into the bushes.
However when the others stopped she didn't, the gunshots ringing out behind her and making her run for her life. She was the least important player in this game, she knew she had to run or it would be her that would die. She heard shouting behind her but she had made sure to take off in the direction the medallion had pointed, knowing they would regroup somewhere along the way. She continued to run for her life, her foot sliding and the girl falling down a muddy hill. She screamed out as she slid trying to catch onto something to stop her from sliding but she didn't stop, not for what felt like at least five minute. She slid right off the side of a rock, dropping what felt like ten feet onto the ground.
June groaned as she laid in the mud, her body in excruciating pain as she attempted to push herself up. When she looked up she was about 30 feet from the mount of a cave, the girl turning to look back at where she had fallen from. There was no way she could get back up there.
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" She shouted, trying to choose between which way to go. She heard a mysterious noise that drew her attention back to the cave, her heartbeat stalling as she wondered what the noise was. It pulled her in like a trance, June taking careful steps inside the dark cave and out of the rain.
