one.
The tapping of a shoe against the floor kept the two young boys grounded, their faces stoic and concentrated as they observed the man in front of them. Adam March sat in one of the two chair on the outside of the desk, his hands intertwined under his chin and his leg bouncing as he tried to read the man behind the desks face. Zach Roberts was occupying the other chair, chewing on his bottom lip as he fidgeted slightly to get a better position. His cast was uncomfortable all the time, but more uncomfortable at the moment, making him move around to try and find a good place for him to rest. His back brace made it hard for him to really adjust, but he made do with whatever relief he could get.
Behind the desk was a new character, an important one, a man who looked to be about 25 years old, a red ink pen being held in place between his teeth as he looked through the papers he had been given.
The tension between the three men was tangible, the two boys on the outside of the desk feeling complete and utter impatience as they waited for what he would say. Finally he opened his mouth, the two boys instinctively leaning forwards to hear his words.
"So this uh...Rafe Cameron...he did this to you?" His eyes dropped over Zach, the boy who looked weak and battered. He was weak and battered.
"Yeah, yeah...he pushed me off a tower." He confirmed, Leon Hardy nodding slowly as he looked over him one last time. His face scrunched up as he let out a sigh, sitting forwards in his chair and looking between them.
"I'm just not really seeing what you want me to do about this. I mean this guy sounds like a bad dude. Kills the cop, frames two kids for it, stalks and assaults and kidnaps your sister...pushes you from a tower. And now he's missing, along with your sister and your..." Leon was confused where Zach came into the equation when it came to the sister, but he was quick to clear it up.
"Friend. Listen man...we don't want you to do anything about it. We want you to use whatever resources you have to find him. You find him, we do something about it." There was silence after Zach spoke, Hardy looking between the two of them and then shaking his head.
"You're gonna do something stupid aren't you? Kill him? Well let me tell you two something okay? It's harder to kill someone than you think. Be careful."
"So are you gonna take the case or not?" Adam spoke, the clock on the wall behind them ticking too loud for the both of them. Everything was irritating to the two of them, they had both also grown ridiculously short fuses, so the waiting was getting rather irritating too.
"Yeah I'll take it. I'll find your little sister and when I do I'll call you. Once I do that, that's when the real work starts alright? See yourself out." Leon Hardy was not necessarily a very warm man, but he was a private investigator who would get the job done if nothing else. Adam stood from his chair as Hardy swirled in his own, his back going to them as he looked at the file. The March boy reached for Zach, helping him up enough so that he could get his crutches under him. Adam could tell he was in pain, he usually used a wheelchair, but he had asked Adam to help him with crutches for the visit with Leon Hardy, so that he wouldn't appear as weak as he actually was. The crutches had pushed his limits, and so Adam kept a hold on him as they slowly made their way out of the office.
There were no words until they got to the car, Adam closing Zachs door and running around the other side. The second he closed his own door Zach spoke, the silence no longer being held.
"I don't like him."
"We don't have to like him, we just have to trust him to find Rafe." The March boys eyes were glued to the wheel as he started the car, wondering if at all this was the correct course of action.
"And if he does? What then?" It was a question they had been bouncing around for days, and they still hadn't come up with an answer. Adam shook his head, his eyes dark and sincere as he spoke.
"We kill him." While killing him would've been something that Zach would have agreed to awhile ago, he now shook his head, his eyebrows furrowing as he started to speak.
"Kill him? No—no. Why would we kill him?"
"Because of what he did to you! Because of what he did to June! To Peterkin! He deserves it." Adam didn't understand his resistance, the man had tried to kill him, gave him irreparable damage.
"No he doesn't. No—Adam he needs help. Serious help. Don't you-remember what he was acting like that night? At the Hawks Nest? He needs real help."
"So we catch him and we get him help? Then what?" The March boy was not following Zachs thought process, blinded by his want to end his miserable life.
"Then we finally get justice. I get justice. June gets justice." Her name burned his tongue, every time he spoke it it got less sweet. The truth has singed him, broken his spirit and broken his heart. June had lied, she had lied for years, and on top of everything else...she had cheated. He hated her at the moment, and yet he couldn't help but still love her immensely.
"How does a shrink equal justice?"
"He suffers for his crimes. He goes to prison. He never gets out. Don't you see? He doesn't deserve to die...he deserves to rot and suffer in prison for the rest of his life." Adam now understood, his eyebrows giving away his realization. Rafe suffering for years and years did sound more fair, killing him would be too quick, one minute and it could all be over. But bringing him in, bringing him to justice? How could they ever top that? They would be heroes.
"Yeah...yeah that's a good plan." The older boy commended his friend, finally putting the car into gear and pulling out of the parking lot.
There was silence again, it was hard for them to find regular things for them to talk about anymore. Their entire lives centered around all of this, and they both secretly hoped that one day it would just go back to normal. They dreamed of normal days, working, studying, going back to school, but those days were far in the future, and it was impossible to see the beginning of those days when they were stuck in the storm they were in.
The only ultimate goal that Adam had in this whole plan was finding his sister. He often remembered how painful it was when he had found out she had been stolen, he knew that Rafe had taken her, he could feel it in his gut. His parents didn't exactly shut down this time, they went about their lives and somehow acted unconcerned, and it infuriated him to see it. He knew they were worried, but they thought she had ran away with the rest of the Pogues and that eventually, in time...she would come back. They had their punishment waiting. He felt like the only one who knew the truth, and the only one that could solve this problem. He knew that wherever Rafe was, so was June.
"You need help getting inside?" Adam looked over at Zach, and he saw his face fall. He hated being like this, dependent on others. He wanted his life back, but he wouldn't get it back until Rafe was behind bars. It was one thing for a girl to betray you, but his brother had been hurting him repeatedly for awhile now, and it was beating him up to bear the weight of this cheat.
"Yeah...thanks man."
