fifty-two.
The blaring sound of music from Tannyhill could be heard from where June parked, the girl quickly starting up the yard with determination. In her hands she held the two notes tucked away into the book, an angry look on her features. She figured she had been at this house a few times too many in the past week, and she wanted to make a note of the fact that she really wanted this to be the last time.
The front door stood open, a jarring sense of pride going through her as she saw the still broken glass, the busted knob. Of course the door was open, it couldn't shut. She pushed it open further and walked inside, her head turning towards the sound of the outrageously loud music. Her legs pulled her across the bottom floor of the house towards the back yard, the first doubts starting to flood her brain. She wasn't too sure about this. She had the book tucked under her arm as she pushed into the back porch, feeling so incredibly out of place now that she was out here.
From her right side sat Barry, his eyes immediately catching onto her presence. He couldn't help but smile when he saw her, it was the times before she opened her mouth that he figured he could understand why Rafe was so obsessed with her. However the look on her face made him quirk an eyebrow, realizing he probably knew why she was here, considering the fact he didn't suppose she was there for the party. He pushed himself up from the couch, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he approached her.
"Well hey, trouble. What you looking for?" She didn't seem surprised by his presence, the girl getting the rational thought that Barry seemed to be Rafes only friend. She put a deadpan look on her face, turning her body towards him and giving an unimpressed smile.
"I'm looking for Rafe." Barry figured as much, his eyes doing the obligatory drop over her. She was wearing jeans and a tank top, her arms covered by a jacket. And just at the edge of the jacket he could see a cut peeking out from behind it, his head shaking slightly as he looked up at her battered face. She wore a black eye well.
"Man for someone who don't like him...you sure do turn up a lot." Barry's lips were heavy with a smirk and her unimpressed smile dropped, a slight sneer pulling at her mouth. Her eyes darkened and Barry could see the conversation was over, his eyes shooting to the book in her hands. He could read the side, a bolt of confusion running through him. His eyebrows furrowed and he held an air of amusement, his finger lifting to gesture towards the book she was holding. "You into plants, trouble?"
"Not anymore. Where's Rafe?" This time he felt inclined to answer, especially when he remembered where Rafe had went. She didn't enjoy the change in his gaze, the one that told her something was up. He gestured towards the stairs and she took it as her sign that he was upstairs. She didn't bother thanking him, Barry watching as she walked away.
June ascended the stairs , feeling her nerves bundle up. She reached Rafes door and was stopped by the sound of laughing, high pitched giggling that without a doubt was not Rafe. She felt that anger she had walked up with return and she pushed the door open, her eyes taking in the scene immediately. Rafe was hovered over a girl, his shirt off and her body laid across the bed. The door opening startled both of them, and the second that Rafes eyes fell on her he felt panicked and caught.
"I need to talk to you. Now!" She said, returning out into the hallway. Rafe scrambled to get up, his eyes wide and terrified as he realized he had been caught. He felt like she had found him cheating on her, like he would be reprimanded and insulted for being with another girl and while they weren't together at all, his loyalties still lied with June.
"Who is that?" The girl on the bed asked, looking at Rafe as he rebuttoned his shorts.
"Shit! Shit." He exclaimed, following after June as fast as he could. "June wait!"
He pushed out into the hallway to see her standing by the edge of the stairs, an angered and determined look on her face. He felt pure panic as he looked at her, his breaths heavy as he gestured towards the door he had just left.
"It's not what it looks like okay? She's just—"
"I don't give a fuck! What—what is all this huh? Are you running a frat now or something?!" He was stunned by her admittance of not caring, his mind having conceptualized the fact that she would be more upset over seeing him with another girl. Surely, he thought, surely she is hiding her hurt because she is angry with him. He coped with that idea better than the truth, the boy swallowing as he looked at her. "And this! How did you find it?! How did you get inside my house and put it there?!"
She pushed the book into his chest and he felt an air of confusion, his eyes narrowing and then widening as he looked at her.
"The book? I bought it for you..." He was confused clearly, June groaning as she opened the pages and pulled the notes out.
"I woke up this morning and there was this note. How did you find it?" Rafe took a moment to break his gaze from her face, his eyes fluttering down to the note she was holding up to him. He was hardly able to comprehend it due to the grip she had on his arm. He shook his head slightly as he looked at the words, her eyes burning into his face as he read them. A peace offering.
"I didn't write that. And I didn't find anything. What are you talking about?" She chuckled at his words, unamused by his lies. For a moment he saw that same terrifying look on her face as when she had showed up 2 days prior, his heart beginning to pound in his chest even harder as she fixed her gaze on him again.
"You expect me to believe that you broke into my house and put that stupid fucking plant in there and left your stupid little note, but that you didn't leave this other note that talks about a peace offering and drop the fucking medallion off?! How did you find it Rafe?! I'm fucking serious, where was it?!" The shock that took over his face was one that made her slightly falter, his eyes widening as he took a step forwards.
"What are you talking about June? What medallion?" His voice dropped down to a whisper and she moved her hand to the waistband of her jeans, Rafe not seeming to care all that much that she had a gun. His whole demeanor had changed, the scary serious side of him coming out as he looked at her. It struck her suddenly that Rafe Cameron had no idea about the medallion, she hadn't told him, and she hadn't ever intended to. But if he didn't know about it, then who had left it in her home? In her room...watching her while she slept. Her body flushed with fear and she broke the eye contact, blinking a few times as she realized someone else was to blame. She looked back at Rafe and saw a worried look in his eyes, her stomach dropping into a pit and her blood running cold as she felt a new deranged sense of fear.
"Rafe I need you to swear to me—swear on your life! Swear to me you had nothing to do with this note. With this one." She held the piece of paper up and he didn't even have to look at it to shake his head at her. Instead he grabbed at her hand, pushing it against his chest and lowering his head to her level.
"I swear on my life I didn't leave you that note." She searched his face with fear and panic and deep down a bit of relief. She believed him. His eyes held some genuine worry and she furrowed her eyebrows at him, gulping as she realized there was just another problem. Her lips curled up and he realized she was shaking, his face softening into one of concern. "I'm worried about you. I mean I understand some of the stuff is my fault. But—but you show up with a black eye and now you're accusing me of breaking into your house and leaving you some kind of note. I don't understand-"
"You did break into my house and leave me a note. And a plant. And that fucking book."
"Actually that guy let me in. I planned on giving it to you but he said you weren't there. The one who's staying in your house. The one who you know—hit me in the head." June cursed Tyler in her head, pulling herself from Rafes grip and shaking her head at him.
"Okay. Okay if you didn't do it then someone else is creeping around my house. Great." Rafe just watched her, shrugging his shoulders as she drug a hand across her face. His lips turned down and he shook his head, putting on the most innocent look he could and making her want to punch him in the face. "Stop making that face or I'm gonna punch you."
He managed a laugh, June completely serious. He held his hands up in surrender, clicking his tongue and then crossing his arms over his chest. It was then that she realized he had no shirt on, her eyes rolling as he began to speak.
"Speaking of...do you remember that time when you did punch me in the face? "
"I'm not starting a whole conversation with you I just came to accuse you. Possibly shoot you. Still debating on that one." She had a dominant air about her, Rafes mouth opening slightly as his eyes took he in. He secretly loved it when she was irritated with him, he liked her snarky attitude. However he could tell she was genuinely worried, and deep down he was too, because if someone was messing with her that wasn't him, he didn't like that. His mind drifted to her catching him in bed with another girl and his face fell, the tension between them thickening as she watched his mood swing.
"Listen...that girl in there—that girl in there means nothing okay? It's not serious." She rolled her eyes again, wondering how delusional he had to be to think she cared that much. "It's just...it's not like you're really giving me much attention right now and I—"
"Rafe I don't care about that right now. I have bigger issues than who you're fucking alright? I gotta go. You still owe me a meeting about our deal." She turned away irritated, the Cameron boy watching after her. He felt a pang of relief in his chest when she had expressed that she didn't care, the boy feeling less guilty about it. Before she walked away she took a few steps and grabbed the book from the floor, his heart fluttering as she did so. His eyes were glued to her figure as she left the house and he wasn't sure if she understood what that had meant to him, her accepting his gift.
Rafe ran a hand over his forehead and then scratched at the back of his neck, feeling worry crowd his lungs. She was afraid someone had broken into her house, there was so much she wasn't telling him...she didn't seem safe. And if he wanted her to be anything at all....it was safe.
