| ii. THE MOTEL
As soon as Victoria woke up, JJ wasn't there. She wasn't surprised, he often would leave her house, when he got enough sleep. He would usually leave a note with a smiley face on it and a sandwich for the girl to eat. Since the hurricane did some work, she had to clean up all the mess in the front yard.
The girl got up from the couch with a frown on her face, grabbed the sandwich JJ left for her and stepped outside. She heard a few grunts coming from the garage, her body freezing in shock. Victoria took each step carefully, trying not to scare away the intruder. She peeked around the corner, right before she stepped inside, just to see blonde hair behind the car.
"You scared the shit out of me, JJ." She breathed out, relieved by the fact it wasn't an intruder, but JJ. "I thought you left!"
He got up from the ground, brushing the dust off of his pants. "I couldn't leave you with this mess alone. Plus you helped me yesterday, so..." The blonde shrugged his shoulders and grinned. He clapped his hands before grabbing the girl's arm and pulling her towards the road. "We'll clean up later, let's go fishing."
"JJ! There's a ton of work here!" She tried to protest.
The blonde stopped in his tracks and placed his index finger on her lips, shushing her. "Don't worry, let's relax today, 'right?"
After a while, Victoria nodded letting JJ lead her wherever he was going. She wasn't the type of a person to leave a mess behind her, but the blonde could be really convincing.
They walked through the street, before stopping in front of John B's house, who was in worse state than Victoria's. Glass was splattered on the ground, lying right next to many branches.
"Hey John B." She greeted the boy as she sat her backpack down on the ground of the boat. The boy flashed her a smile, before starting the boat and driving into the sea. "Let's pick up Pope first." Victoria announced, while looking through her bag. She pulled out her sunglasses and placed them on her nose.
"We have a safety meeting, attendance of Pope Heyward mandatory." John B spoke, trying to mimic the voice as if he was speaking through a walkie-talkie.
Pope frowned, looking over his shoulder to see if his father was watching. "I can't. My pop's got me on lockdown." He declared.
"C'mon man. Your dad's a pussy. Over." JJ spoke also mimicking the static.
Victoria gasped at the blonde's words. "JJ!" She scolded him, smiling awkwardly at Pope's father. "Sorry Ms. Heyward, but we need your son."
"A day after hurricane's a free day." John B shrugged his arms.
The man furrowed his eyebrows, clearly confused by JB's words. "Who the hell made that up?" He asked.
"Uh... Pentagon I think. We have security clearance." JJ stated, hoping Pope's father will believe his words.
"Y'all think I'm stupid?"
Victoria stood up, fixing her shirt. "Of course not, Mr. Heyward, we just need Pope. He'll clean up tomorrow, alright?" She nodded at the boy who was debating if he should get in the boat or not. "Get in the boat." She whispered.
"I'll do it tomorrow, I promise." Pope pleaded as the boat was driving away.
"I don't like your friends!" The man shouted before the group drove away out of the sight.

They drove through the water as JJ stood at the front, waterfalling beer into his mouth. It sprayed everywhere, dripping down Victoria's face and Pope's arm as they tried to shield themselves. Suddenly the boat lurched forwards, throwing everyone out of their seats. JJ was thrown out of the boat, splashing loudly in the water.
"Pope you good?" Victoria asked as she pushed herself off of the ground, looking at the boy who was gripping his head in pain. She cracked her knuckles, trying to steady her feet. "Is everyone okay?
Everyone moaned in response as they were trying to get up from the ground.
"I think my heels touched the back of my head." He coughed, before swimming back to the boat slowly. "Pope, what did you do?"
"Sandbar. The channel changed." Pope replied as he picked up his hat off of the ground.
Victoria pushed her hair behind her head and grimaced in pain. "That's gonna mess this whole place up." She mumbled as Pope walked past her to the front of the boat.
Pope stood at the front of the boat and stared directly into the water with wide eyes. The girl walked over to the boy and placed a hand on his shoulder. He ignored her and pointed his finger at the water, his hands shaking in fear of discovering something really bad.
"I think there's a boat down there." He said loudly, catching the rest of the group's attention. They followed his pointed finger and there was it. The top of a sunken boat. They could see it barely, but the shape of it reminded them of a boat. "You think there's a body down there?" He asked nervously.
"Come on, dude." Victoria tapped his shoulder and slipped off her shorts and a shirt that was covering her black bikini. They jumped into the water, letting their bodies cool down from the heat.
They all grabbed onto the boat and pushed it off. Victoria dived down deeper and reached on the seat, before grabbing something. She could feel herself losing my breath and panicking she swam to the top.
Air filled her lungs as she wiped her face. "I found something." She called to her friends and pulled out a key with a yellow tag connected to it with a number, 229, printed on it.
"Great! We got a motel key and a Grady White." JJ sarcastically said as he started the boat.
"Wait, wait. Do we know whose boat that is?" Pope asked as he took the steering wheel from JJ.
"Nope, but maybe with this motel key, we'll find out." Victoria grinned as she tried to put on her shirt on her wet body. She leaned against the side of the boat as they drove through the water, back to the main shore.
"Guys! We should report this to the coast guard. Maybe we'll get a finders fee." Kiara told them.
JJ snorted as the wind blew his blond hair out of his face. "Thanks, Agatha, ya batch!"
"Let's go to the motel and use the key." Victoria announced while combing through Kiara's hair.
"Yeah, find out where it goes and discover a dead body." Pope shot back, sarcasm dripping from his voice.
"Calm down, golden boy, we're not gonna find a dead body." Victoria rolled her eyes, before standing up and stepping out of the boat.
They arrived at the motel that was labeled on the key. The hurricane had completely destroyed the place, leaving many mattresses and palms on the ground. "It looks like someone with Grady White would get killed." Pope commented.
"This place is a shit show" Victoria muttered as she stared at the damaged motel.
JJ hopped off the boat and tied it. The girl decided to stay with Pope and Kiara, while JJ and John B would check the motel room. She was sure JJ was going to do something stupid or really dangerous. She leaned against the railing and raised her eyebrows at the blonde boy.
"Hey, John B." Victoria called out to the curly haired boy. "Don't let him do anything stupid." She pointed her finger at JJ, who was looking at her expectantly.
He shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not making promises." John B said and Victoria sighed, shaking her head in resignation.
"Uh, be careful." Kie said as she handed the key to John B. "I mean it." She rolled her eyes as the boy nodded quickly before hopping off the boat and following JJ.
Victoria and Pope exchanged looks and nodded, raising their eyebrows and smirking, knowing they were going to tease John B about him and Kiara later. The girl cleared her throat and ran her hand through her, already dry, hair.
"I have a feeling JJ is going to pull some shit." She exclaimed as they watched JJ and John B close the door behind them. She glanced at Pope in the corner of her eye and her mouth curved into a smile. His face showed disappointment and regret at the same time, but soon it turned into panic. Victoria followed his gaze and she saw a blue and white car pulling up to the motel. "Oh shit, cops."
"If I lose my merit scholarship, I'm gonna kill someone." Pope commented, nervously threading a hand through his hair.
"Should we peel?" Kiara questioned, looking around in hope of finding something that could warn John B and JJ.
"You never leave a Pouge behind."
JJ moved away from the window and the gun that he hid in his waistband short, fell out, down the roof on the ground. John B held a finger to his lips, telling JJ to be quiet. After one minute, police left the room and headed to the boat. John B exhaled the air he was holding in his lungs and began to climb down the window with JJ. The blonde quickly grabbed the gun and hid it in his pocket, looking around to see if anyone noticed it.
"Well, that was fun." JJ commented as they drove through the water, back to Chateau.
"The cops took everything like it was a crime scene." Pope said and fixed his hat, glancing between JJ and John B. "Did you guys find anything?"
"Did we find anything? No, I don't think so..." Suddenly he pulled out a gun and a stack of money, earning angry looks from Kiara, Pope and Victoria. They knew JJ was going to take something from the room, but they didn't expect to see a gun. "Oh, yeah! We did."
Pope immediately got up from his seat and threw his arms in the air, frustrated by the boy's behavior. "Why would you take that from a crime scene?" He babbled anxiously. "I'm gonna lose my merit scholarship..."
"What the hell, JJ?" Victoria asked, not believing what she saw. She debated about tossing the gun in the ocean when he wasn't looking.
He shook his head, eyeing his friends. "It's better than the cops having it." He replied as he sat in his seat, examining the gun.
"I'm living the nightmare."
