CHAPTER SIX, the woman in the woods
Now the group of five were walking back to the camp sight, arriving just in time when the rest of the campers were sitting around the campfire. "Welcome, folks, to your very first Newbie Initiation Campout Night!" Maddox smiles and everyone cheers. The five teens sat down on some logs, next to the rest of the campers. "Now to kick off the night, let's give it up for our very own Rocket Man!" Everyone cheers again, Tabitha cheering louder than the rest which caused EJ to smile widely as he walked forward with his guitar strapped around his shoulder.
"Alright, everyone, pay attention 'cause I don't have much time to waste tonight." EJ explains, sitting down beside Maddox. "I'm gonna need a little help singing parts of this, okay?"
"Shake your money maker, Caswell!" Carlos shimmied his shoulders along with Kourtney and some campers laughed at Carlos' comment.
EJ shakes his head. "Not helpful, Carlos." He smiles. "Alright, here we go. This one is called the Ballad of Shallow Lake and every word is true." He spoke in a spooky voice, causing his girlfriend and friends to exchange a look, some looked worried while others looked amused.
EJ then begins to strum his acoustic guitar before he starts singing. "Gonna tell a story about Susan Fine. She lived two hundred years ago. One night she heard a whistle, the spooky kind. The sound can make your blood run cold. They say she got swallowed by Shallow Lake. Never to be seen again. 'Till her ghost says, 'come on in.''"
Tabitha chuckles lightly when Ricky used some Twizzlers he stole as drum sticks, drumming them on Jet's arm and Jet chuckled, shaking his head, swatting Ricky away. Maddox then harmonizes along with EJ for the next part. "Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na. She lost her soul and she lost her mind. Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na. Don't get caught my Susie Fine."
Tabitha and Maeve share a nervous look. Some other campers looked nervous or scared as well because of the song while others enjoyed the song. Ricky was now eating some of the Twizzlers he stole that he kept in the pocket of his hoodie. Zander was also eating some Twizzlers since he had asked if Ricky would give him some.
"So pray you find your way back home. Oh, oh." Tabitha watched EJ belt out the last word with awe. She was always amazed by how talented he was.
"Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na. She'll drink your blood like it's werewolf wine." Carlos scares Kourtney, laughing when Kourtney jumped as she gasped. She glares at Carlos, shaking her head. Gina glances at Kourtney with slight amusement while Kourtney looks at her with a scared look. "Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na. You better run from Susie Fine."
Everyone cheers for EJ and Maddox. Kourtney raises her hand and lowers her hand after she got EJ's and Maddox's attention. She chuckles nervously. "Um, is that really a true story?"
"Oh, that song is basically a documentary." Maddox replied.
"Oh, great." Maeve nervously mumbled.
Kourtney chuckles nervously again. "Quick follow-up..."
"I actually have a lot of homework," EJ explains. He points at Maddox with a smile. "But the amazing Maddox will explain it all."
"Let's see. Who here likes ghost stories?" Maddox questioned and some campers raised their hands. Tabitha couldn't help the giggle that left her lips when Ricky excitedly raised both of his hands.
Maddox chuckles. "Then it's time for you all to hear the story of," She turns her flashlight on, facing it upwards like how people normally use flashlights during ghost stories. "The Woman in the Woods."
"See, that's a no for me." Kourtney commented.
"Camp Shallow Lake was founded a long, long time ago by a married couple, Mr. John Fine and Mrs. Susan Fine." Maddox explains. "Everybody loved Mrs. Fine. She was kind. Had a voice like an angle. And she had a sweet tooth, unmatched. She always had a bag of Twizzlers in hand."
Out of the corner of her eye, Tabitha notices Ricky sneakily eating a Twizzler from the pocket of his hoodie. Maddox stands up. "But tragedy struck on a night a lot like tonight." Kourtney scoots closer to Gina, looking at Maddox with a scared look. Maeve meant to move closer to Tabitha, but didn't realize she had accidentally moved closer to Zander instead and quickly moves closer to Tabitha when she realized that as she looked away. "It was the very first Newbie Initiation Campout night. Legend says Mrs. Fine heard a faint whistling sound deep within the woods." Tabitha exchange a scared look with her friends when there was a faint noise sounded from the woods just after Maddox spoke.
"So, she wandered out there." Maddox points the flashlight at everyone, raising her voice which caused Kourtney to yelp. "All by herself."
"Wait, uh," Ricky raises his hand. "What did she find?"
"Was it Corbin Bleu's helicopter?" Jet joked, earning some laughter from some campers.
Maddox scoffs. "No. She was out in the woods for so long, she never came home."
Jet nods. "I know the feeling."
Laughter and snickers filled the air as Maddox looks nervous. "Me too." Kourtney agreed with Jet, giggling along with Gina.
"Uh..." Maddox's voice trails off while some campers began to talk amongst themselves. "Well, wait. No. Okay," She raises her voice, causing everyone to grow quiet. "So this all happened twenty, I mean, fifty years ago. And, uh, ever since that night, uh, Mrs. Fine has been wandering the woods. hungry, lost, and angry."
"You guys, am I Susan Fine?" Jet questioned, causing everyone to laugh. Tabitha didn't laugh though, she smiled slightly, but her main attention was focused on Maddox, noticing her getting nervous and upset since Jet was making jokes and no one was listening to her.
"You are pretty angry, dude." Ricky chuckles. "I'm not gonna lie. Like, all the time. Like, it's actually scary..."
"Maddox?" Tabitha speaks up as everyone began talking amongst themselves and Maddox glanves at her. "Are you okay?"
"Um," Maddox chuckles nervously. "Sorry," The campers grew quiet as she continues to talk. "This isn't how I...It's scary. It's supposed to be scary." She scoffs. "Never mind. Sorry." She then ran away.
Jet stands up, watching her run with a regretful expression on his face. "Maddie, wait."
Everyone glances at Jet with confusion, wondering how if he knew Maddox on a personal level. Jet sighed, sitting back down.

"Knock knock." Tabitha said as she walked into EJ's tent.
He glances up from the script, looking at her with a soft smile. "Hey, Tabs."
"My offer to help you out is still on the table." Tabitha smiles, sitting beside him. "I know nothing about what you're doing, but I'll do my best to help."
"I literally don't care you don't know what you're doing," EJ admits with a chuckle. "I would love some help."
He then showed Tabitha what he was doing with the script and eventually once Tabitha got the hang of it she was doing what EJ was doing with the script with another script. This wasn't exactly fun, but the couple didn't care. They always enjoyed being in each other's presence. They were the kind of couple who could be comfortable with being silent the whole time and just enjoy being with each other. The fact she wanted to help him out meant the world to him because to be honest he was worried. He didn't know how he was going to get this done by himself before tomorrow, but now he knows he has a chance for that to happen thanks to Tabitha.
A few minutes later, someone peeks into the tent. "Boo!"
Tabitha jumps and out of instinct she threw the highlighter she held at the person who was at the door, startled by the sudden yell. She sighs with relief upon seeing it was only Ricky. "People have got to stop scaring me tonight or I really will die 'cause of a heart attack." She smiles apologetically at Ricky and apologizes for hitting him. "Sorry, Ricky."
Ricky chuckles, rubbing his forehead where the highlighter hit. "It's okay. I should've seen that coming." He picks up the highlighter and walks into the tent, handing the highlighter back to Tabitha. She sends him a small smile to thank him and went back to highlighting lines. "Dude, this legend. Tabi, Mae, and Zander and I found, like, a shrine in the woods. Let's go."
EJ couldn't help that sting of jealously he felt when Ricky said Tabitha was with him. "I can't tonight. I have to finish this thing before..."
"Wait!" Gina peeks her head into the tent along with Marc. "What thing in the woods?"
"Is it really a shrine?" Marc chuckled.
"It's literally the spookiest thing I've ever seen and I've seen Hereditary." Ricky commented.
"Why would you watch that?" Tabitha chuckled, shaking her head as she continued to highlight lines.
"Why not." Ricky shrugs. "Did you watch it?"
"No way." Tabitha immediately replies with a scared look. "I hate scary movies."
"Aw, come on." Gina grins. Marc opens the tent the rest of the way, letting Gina in first before he follows her. "Let's go, Eej."
"Don't mind me." Ashlyn chimes in, opening the tent. "Just having a teeny, tiny identity crisis." She chuckles nervously. "EJ, do you remember the time I was born?"
"A little busy here, Ash." Tabitha told her.
"Sorry," Ashlyn apologizes. "I'll leave right after I find this out. I just need to know if it was 11:37am or 11:37 pm."
"Everyone, stop." EJ snaps, slamming his hands on the table which startled the group. Tabitha glances at him with concern. She knew that he was stressed because he normally never snapped at her and the others. EJ turns to face Ashlyn. "It was 11:37 am. I know that because my mom always tells me how you forever ruined the eggs Benedict. Remember? Eggs Benedict is a strictly morning dish." He glances at Ricky, Gina, and Marc. "No, I can't come see the shrine tonight. Tabs and I have to finish marking up the script before Corbin comes tomorrow." He chuckles, raising his hands in defense. "I have a lot on my plate, okay?"
"It's okay." Marc reassures him. "Come on, guys. Let's go."
Gina grabs Ashlyn's arm, pulling a shocked Ashlyn out of the tent as the boys follow them. EJ turns around with a sigh. "EJ?" Tabitha asks. "Are you okay?"
"I'm sorry. I-I didn't mean to snap at everyone. I'm just really stressed and I'm worried about tomorrow." EJ admitted, glancing at her with an apologetic expression.
"It's okay." Tabitha reassures him, scooting closer to him so she can wrap her arm around his shoulders. He sighs heavily, resting his head on her shoulder and wraps his arm around her waist. "You shouldn't be stressed though, alright? I'll always be here to help you out." She gently rubs his shoulder to comfort him as she continues to speak. "And you shouldn't worry about tomorrow, alright? Everything is gonna be great. Even if some mistakes happen, it will be great. I'll always be proud of you no matter what though."
"Thank you, angel. I love you."
"I love you too." Tabitha smiles softly, her heart fluttering at the new term of endearment used as she blushes faintly. "So, angel, huh?"
"Yeah, wanted to try it out." EJ lifts his head off his shoulder to look at her with a shy smile, his face tinted light pink. "What'd you think?"
Tabitha smiles at him. "I love it."

The couple spent the next hours highlighting the scripts. At one point Carlos came to keep them company and talked with them. Tabitha and EJ sat close together, both of them sharing a blanket that was wrapped around their shoulders as Carlos sat off to the side. "There you are!" Kourtney exclaims, looking at Carlos as she joins the couple and Carlos in the tent. "Stop leaving our tent without a hall pass."
Tabitha snickers. "Carlos, looks like the hall monitor caught you."
"Okay, I woke up and you were gone," Kourtney began to ramble and Carlos rolls his eyes. "I thought you were dead."
"For the million time, the Woman in the Woods is not real." EJ told her in a frustrated tone.
"He's in a tough place tonight." Carlos said to Kourtney.
Kourtney scoffs, looking at him with offense. "So am I. Gee, I wonder why I can barely sleep tonight," She looks at Carlos with a glare. "When I've reached the pinnacle of my theater career."
"Don't look at me." Carlos raises his hands in defense. "The monster costume was Ricky's idea."
So apparently Ricky and Carlos teamed up to scare Kourtney and now Kourtney was rightfully freaking out. "Guys, I really don't mean to be rude, but I have much bigger things happening." EJ said.
Kourtney furrow her eyebrows. "What's bigger than monsters?"
"That aren't real?" Tabitha raises her eyebrows. "He literally just said The Woman in The Woods doesn't exist."
"Well, there are two issues. One, Dewey called with an update." Carlos explains. "Corbin Bleu is coming extra early."
"Oh!" Kourtney's eyes widen with surprise and she sat down.
"It's a major code red." Carlos nods. "We're doing a first read-through before I've had my third cu of coffee."
Tabitha chuckles. "You might be worse than Maeve with coffee in the morning, Carlos."
"What's the second issue?" Kourtney inquired.
"Oh, Ricky, Gina, and Marc are a hundred percent missing." Carlos responded.
Kourtney gasps and Tabitha exchanges a worried glance with EJ. "What?" EJ questioned.
"What if the Woman in the Woods...."
"Kourt, I'm gonna stop you right there." Carlos interrupted Kourtney.
She looks at him worriedly. "But..."
"Kourt, how many times do we gotta tell you the Woman in the Woods doesn't exist?" Tabitha asks her. "And we shouldn't worry about them. I think they're capable of getting back to the camp themselves." She said, trying to reassure everyone and herself.
"Carlos and Tabs are right. I'm sure Ricky, Gina, and Marc are fine." EJ voiced.
