CHAPTER FIVE, roles & camping
The next morning the birds were chirping and everyone was peacefully sleeping. Tabitha excitedly ran over to Kourtney's bunk, giggling a bit upon hearing her snoring softly. She kneels beside the bed and sings, "Do you wanna build a snowman?"
Kourtney groans in her sleep, pushing Tabitha away which caused Tabitha to laugh a bit. She turns to lay on her right side, facing away from Tabitha. Tabitha leans closer to try to get her attention and tries again. "Do you wanna build a snowman?"
"Free the werewolves, it's not their fault. Blame it on the moon." Kourtney pleaded, shaking her head before she went back to sleep.
"Good morning, Elsa." Tabitha grinned.
Kourtney was wide awake when she heard Tabitha say that. She pulled her eye mask up, staring at the brunette-haired girl with shock. Then she grinned and they both squeal excitedly. Kourtney quickly got out of bed, linking arms with Tabitha as they both rush over to where the cast list was posted.
"Wait! You're Anna?" Kourtney excitedly asked.
"Yeah, I can't believe it!" Tabitha beamed.
"Then that makes us sisters!" Kourtney cheered, holding onto Tabitha's hands as she squealed excitedly along with her, both of the girls jumping up and down out of excitement.
Everyone who were nearby covered their ears at the high-pitched squealing. "Wow!" Ricky comments, wincing slightly at the loud noise. "I didn't know your voices could even reach that register."
"What?" Marc raised his voice, acting as if he had trouble hearing after the loud high-pitch squealing.
"Plug your ears, I'm about to join them." Carlos grins, gently pushing the girls out of the way. He looks at the cast list. Ricky and Marc joins him to check the cast list as well. "I can't believe I'm playing..."
"Olaf!" Ricky noticed.
"Oh, I love Olaf! He's the best." Marc grinned.
"Congrats, bro." Ricky commented, patting Carlos on the shoulder.
"Yeah, I don't think that's the role he wanted." Marc realized, noticing the look of disbelief on Carlos' face.
"Why did I hear loud squealing this early in the morning?" Maeve complained as she joined everyone.
"Tabi and I are gonna be sisters! We're playing Anna and Elsa!" Kourtney excitedly replied as she and Tabitha grinned at each other.
Maeve smiles widely, hiding the hurt she felt because she was starting to get jealous of their friendship. Especially now that they were going to be the female leads. "That's awesome! I'm so happy for you guys!" She walks over to the cast list, grinning when she saw her lead. She turns to face her friends excitedly. "I'm gonna be Queen Iduna!"
"Wait, so that means you'll be our mother!" Kourtney smiled excitedly.
Maeve's eyes widen in realization and she grins. "Oh, that's right."
Marc grimaces after he checked the cast list, raising his eyebrows at Maeve. "Did you check who was gonna be King Agnarr?"
Maeve's shoulders drop as she realized who he was talking about, a look of dread appearing on her face. "No. Please not him."
"Yes, I'm afraid I'll be your King." Zander's voice was heard from behind Maeve. She turned around to face him with annoyance, rolling her eyes at the smirk on his face.
Zander rolls his eyes and crosses his arms. "I don't like you, you don't like me, but I'm King Agnarr in the play and you're Queen Iduna, there's nothing we can do about it now. It's been cast. So, we're just gonna have to deal with it somehow."
Maeve groans dramatically. "Fine." She muttered.
"And I'm Kristoff." Ricky notices as he looks at the cast list. He smiles. "That's..."
"A person." Carlos said. He looks at Ricky with annoyance. "Congratulations on being an actual species, Ricky. What?" He scoffs. "First Lumiere and now Olaf. Am I destined to play an inanimate object for eternity?"
"Make way for Belle." Ashlyn dramatically said, walking over to join her friends. Her friends smile at her as she walks to the cast list. "Make way for..." Her eyes widen in disbelief. "The ensemble?" She turns to face everyone with a forced smile. "I mean, hey, the ensemble. You can't do a show without the ensemble. There are no small parts, only small actors, right? Don't count your lines, make the lines count."
"Don't worry, Ash. You're not the only one in our friend group who's in the ensemble." Gina chimed in from her place by Marc.
"Yeah, G and I are in the ensemble as well." Marc explains. He smiles slightly. "The ensemble is not that bad."
"Alright, alright, everyone calm down. Let's just be professionals." EJ chuckled as he walked over to the group.
Tabitha cringes. "Okay, just think about that when you see who you'll be."
EJ glances at her with confusion, but doesn't say anything and turns his attention to Ashlyn when she spoke. "Professionally, mazel tov. Especially EJ. Personally, I will be backlogging photos of him in antlers for all future possible blackmail purposes." Everyone laughed at Ashlyn's comment.
EJ looks at her with confusion. "What are you talkin' about?"
"Your good friend Val cast you as Sven, the reindeer?" Carlos replied.
EJ chuckles, shaking his head. "No, no. I'm not in the show. I'm directing in the show."
"Well, I don't think your good friend got that memo and if she did then she's not really a good friend." Zander remarked.
"Check the list." Carlos tells him. "Looks like you'll be joining the ranks of character actor-directors."
EJ leans forward to look at the cast list, his eyes widening when he realized everyone was right. "Oh, like Greta Gerwig." Gina smiled.
"No," EJ shakes his head. "This has to be a mistake." He chuckled nervously.
"I'm just wondering if this is a final list?" Carlos questioned as voices began to go over each other when the group began to talk about the cast list.
No one noticed Maddox walk out of the barn beside them. "Quit your voices!" She yelled, getting everyone to go silent and looked at her.
"Mornin', stage manager." EJ greets. "You got everything ready?"
Tabitha glances at him curiously, wondering what he meant by that. "Sure do, Rocket Man." Maddox smiles. "It's Newbie Initiation Campout Night, folks. A night in the woods among the wildlife. And spirits." She chuckles as Tabitha exchange a worried look with her friends. "Pack your tents. Oh, and rest your vocal cords. You'll be screaming tonight. Oh, and by the way, Carlos, we have cameras in the stage manager's office. But, uh, nice try recasting the show." With a snap of her fingers, she then walked away.
****
"Not Christmas, not tax day." Maddox gets up from the swing as she grins. "Newbie Night! You guys are gonna have so much fun." In the girls cabin, everyone was packing their things for the night. "Once we reach the camping spot, we start by setting up the tents. Then we gather around the campfire for a little sing-along experience, followed by the world-famous retelling of..." She turns around as she finished folding up a blanket she was putting in her suitcase, frowning slightly when she realized no one was listening to her. "Am I talking to myself?" She nods to herself. "Talking to myself."
Tabitha glances at her with an apologetic smile. "Sorry, Maddox. We're all just busy with getting ready for tonight."
"I'm a little distracted about the fact you said spirits might be gonna be in the woods." Maeve admits, looking around nervously. "That's not true, right?"
Maddox grins. "Maybe it is, maybe it isn't."
"That's a stupid answer." Maeve grumbled. Maddox chuckled along with Tabitha.
Ashlyn exhales frustratingly, ripping out a piece of paper from her notebook. Gina glances at her with confusion. "Are you okay?"
"A hundred percent," Ashlyn nods. "Just journaling. Reframing the news from this morning so I can make it a win."
"Oh, I get it," Maddox said in realization. She smiles. "You're a Leo Rising."
Ashlyn looks at her with offense. "Capricorn Rising, actually. I'm all earth and air signs in my big three."
Maddox raises her eyebrows. "Really? I totally get fire sign vibes from you."
"Look, I know myself, I'm a Ravenclaw, an ENFP, a Belle, and a Samantha." Ashlyn explains. Her friends look at her with confusion at the last one she listed. "The American Girl doll, Samantha." She said in an obvious tone.
"Oh," Tabitha's eyes widen in realization. She grins. "I used to love American Girl dolls."
"Tabi gets it." Ashlyn smiles at her. She looks at Maddox and nods. "And I'm definitely a Capricorn Rising."
"Okay." Maddox nods. "Tonight's gonna rock." As Maddox walked over to her suitcase, Ashlyn then ripped another paper from her journal.
"Hey, Tabs," Tabitha turns her attention to the window with surprise when she heard her boyfriend's voice. She smiles slightly upon seeing him peek his head through the open window, lifting the blinds. "Can I talk to you?"
All the other girls exclaim, gesturing for him to get out. EJ rolls his eyes. "It is my head."
Maddox shrugs. "I'll allow it."
EJ sheepishly smiles. "Now I need to come in the rest of the way."
Maddox rolls her eyes. "You got two minutes." With a small smile, she points finger guns at him. "Go."
Tabitha grins and walks over to the door. EJ walks in, closing the door behind him. He turns to face his girlfriend, smiling softly at her as he revealed he had flowers for her. Tabitha blushes faintly, smiling widely at him. "Awe! Babe, you're so sweet."
"Sorry to barge in." EJ apologized.
"Like what Anna and Hans say, love is an open door." Tabitha chuckled, taking the flowers EJ handed her with a soft smile on her face.
"I knew you'd get the lead. You're a star." EJ complimented. She looked up from the flowers at him, her heart skipping a beat upon seeing he looked at her with adoration and love.
"Thank you." She knows she's blushing a lot right now and smiling like an idiot but she didn't care. "That means the world to me." She sits down at the bench by the window and EJ sits by her. "I think it means more since you didn't cast me, you know? Now I know that I'm actually good enough to play a lead role without knowing my boyfriend just gave me the lead 'cause he loves me."
"Well, I do love you." EJ tells her. "But, yeah, I understand. And if I was the one who casted people, I would still be fair. I wouldn't cast you as a specific role just 'cause you're my favorite girl in the world. I would cast you as a specific role I would've thought you would be perfect for."
"Oh?" Tabitha raises her eyebrows, grinning at him as butterflies swarm in her stomach at the fact he called her his favorite girl in the whole world. "I'm your favorite girl in the world, huh?"
"Okay," Ashlyn speaks up, looking at her cousin with hurt. "Ouch."
EJ and Tabitha chuckle lightly as EJ glances at her with an apologetic expression. "Sorry, Ash. If it helps you're my favorite cousin in the world."
"Okay, I'm better now." Ashlyn smiled.
EJ looks back at Tabitha with a shy smile. "Yeah, you're my favorite girl in the world."
"I gotta admit I'm still in shock that I'm playing Anna." Tabitha confesses. "I mean, I never once thought I would get the lead in a play, but here I am." She couldn't help the excited smile on her face as she continued to ramble, her eyes lighting up as she speaks. EJ couldn't help but smile fondly at her while she talked excitedly about finally getting a lead role, but he couldn't help the fact that he was freaking out on the inside and he wondered if anyone could see that. "And I'm honestly very excited. It feels so good to say I'm the lead. Also, so I counted the number of songs and number of lines for Anna and wow they're so many."
"And-" Tabitha stops in the middle of her sentence when she realized the panicked look on EJ's face as he stared off into space. "Eej? You okay?"
"Sorry," EJ reassures her, putting a hand on her arm. "I'm listening. Just freaking out a little bit."
Tabitha frowns, concern filling her eyes. "What for?"
"Corbin Bleu's coming back tomorrow for our first read through with his camera crew and everything." EJ explains. "I've got to break down the script tonight. And I just...I want the read-through to be flawless. I mean, he was Chad." He points out dramatically, earning a small chuckle from Tabitha. "Tabitha, like, I don't wanna disappoint the Chad."
"You're not gonna disappoint him." Tabitha reassured him, holding the flowers with one hand so she can intertwine a hand with his.
EJ smiles slightly, appreciating her reassurance. "And if you need help with the script, I can help you out." Tabitha offers, earning a relieved look from EJ. She chuckles. "I don't know how much help I would be since I never done anything like break down the script, but I'll try my best-"
"Hi," Kourtney chimes in, walking over to the couple. She chuckles. "Butting in." She looks at EJ nervously. "Um, Corbin? Tomorrow? Ad we're staying out all night. Is that smart?" EJ and Tabitha exchanged a look, but before either of them could reply, Maddox spoke up.
"Ding, ding. And that's two minutes, EJ." Maddox chimed in.
****
Everyone was now at the camping sight, talking amongst themselves about what's to come this night. "Now, everybody, sometimes there are snakes." Maddox called out.
Tabitha's eyes widen, moving closer to her boyfriend and clutches his arms. "Snakes?" She worriedly said, frantically looking around the camp sight.
EJ chuckles lightly, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and kisses the side of her head. "Most of them are not poisonous." Maddox added.
Kourtney's eyes widen with fear. "Most of them?"
"So that means some of them are poisonous?" Tabitha questioned.
"Yes." Maddox pointed at her and Kourtney.
"I can't. I can't. I can't." Kourtney repeats, walking away. "I'm sorry."
"Yeah, Kourt," Tabitha pulls away from EJ, following Kourtney. "I'm right behind you."
"You can't really do that. You guys have to come back." Maddox told them.
EJ grabs ahold of Tabitha's arm before she got too far, pulling her back to him. "Sweetheart, don't worry. Everything will be fine." He reassured her, pulling her in for a hug.
She sighs heavily, wrapping her arms around him. "I hope you're right. But if I get bitten by a snake tonight, I'm blaming you."
****
"Please tell me you know how to put up a tent." Maeve said to Tabitha. The two girls were standing in front of the tent laying on the ground, both of them planning to share a tent.
"You're lucky me and my parents used to camp out when I was younger and that I remember how to put up a tent." Tabitha smiled and began to get to work, telling Maeve what to do along the way.
"There," Tabitha grins, putting her hands on her hips. "All done." She and Maeve stood side by side, looking at the tent that was put up, looking just like all the other tents.
"I'm so relieved you knew what to do." Maeve chuckled.
"Yeah," Tabitha chuckles and nods in agreement. "Me too, Mae." She glances at him with raised eyebrows. "Okay, so I just wanna know, what's up with you and Zander?"
"Nothing's up with me and Zander." Maeve rolls her eyes and crosses her arms. "He's a jerk who I just happen to think he's hot."
Tabitha laughs. "So you like him."
"No, I just said he's a jerk." Maeve points out. "And just 'cause I think he's hot doesn't mean I like him."
"Okay," Tabitha said in a sing-songy voice, not believing her at all. "Whatever you say."
****
"Why are we out here?" Maeve asked nervously, walking close by Tabitha. She wanted to stay close by her not only because she had the flashlight but also because she was scared of the dark and scary forest they were in.
"You're the one who wanted to explore." Tabitha reminded her.
"Yeah, but I didn't think it would be this dark and scary." Maeve admitted.
The two girls stop walking, sharing a scared look when they heard the sound of branches breaking behind them. "What was that?" Maeve asked in a nervous tone.
"Maybe an animal?" Tabitha responded, but it sounded more like a question.
"You look." Maeve told her since she and Tabitha were facing the other way.
Tabitha's eyes widen. "What? No way. You look."
"Okay, we both look on the count of three." Maeve suggested and Tabitha nodded.
"One." Maeve started.
"Two." Tabitha continued.
"Three." The two girls spoke union the same time another voice was heard.
"Hey."
As they turn around, on refelx Maeve punches the person who was behind them in the face. "Ow!" The brunette-haired boy groaned in pain, stumbling backward slightly since he wasn't expecting that.
"Zander?" Maeve and Tabitha asked with surprise.
"Yeah, its me." Zander replies, wincing slightly as he rubs his sore jaw. "Not surprised if you broke my jaw."
"Well, if you didn't sneak up on us like that I wouldn't have punched you in the face." Maeve sassily tells him, putting her hands on her hips. She pauses for a moment as she rethinks her answer and then adds, "Maybe."
"What are you doing out here?" Tabitha inquired.
"I noticed you guys weren't at the camp so I wanted to check on you guys." Zander admitted.
Tabitha smiles, glancing at Maeve, who rolled her eyes. "Awe, thanks for checking on us. See, Maeve? He's sweet."
"Yeah, whatever." Maeve scoffs, trying to stop her heart fluttering because she did agree with Maeve. She hated that she thought it was sweet Zander was worried about them and wanted to check on them. She began walking down the path she and Tabitha were heading down. "Let's keep exploring."
Zander joins the girls with exploring more, despite Maeve's protests. Towards the end of the path, they noticed someone walking with a flashlight.
"Wait," Tabitha furrows her eyebrows with confusion and then she realized who the person was. "Ricky?"
Ricky turns around, letting out a small scream since he wasn't expecting Zander and the girls to be there. "You guys, what are you doing here?"
"We're exploring." Maeve replies. "You?"
"Same." Ricky responds. "I'm pretty sure I saw something at the end of this path."
"Guess we should keep going to figure out what it is." Zander suggested.
"Do we really need to?" Tabitha nervously asks. "I say let's just call it a night and head back."
"Why quit now when we're almost at the end?" Zander questioned.
"I hate to admit it," Maece confesses. She mumbles under her breath, "I really hate to admit it." Zander and her friends chuckle at her. "But Zander does have a point."
"Okay, fine." Tabitha sighed.
The four teens continued down the path, walking side by side, Tabitha and Ricky being the only one with a flashlight. Zander didn't have a flashlight which surprised the girls when they first ran into him in the dark forest, but as they walked down the path before they met with Ricky he explained he used the light on his phone.
They all reach the end of the path, stopping when they noticed a small table with some creepy decorations on it and other odd things on it. A jar of Twizzlers and a bowl of crystals were what really caught the teens eyes.
"Okay," Maeve drags out the word, looking nervous. "This is creepy."
"Now can we go back to the camp sight?" Tabitha asked.
"Don't you guys wanna figure out why would this stuff be out in the middle of the forest?" Ricky questioned, glancing at her with raised eyebrows.
"Well, yeah, but I really don't wanna die." Tabitha replies nervously, glancing around frantically. "And I feel like this would be the part of the horror movie where we die."
"We're not gonna die." Zander chuckles, beginning to walk a bit ahead of the others. "Come on."
The four teens stood at the table that had weird creepy items on it, the four of them confused and scared about why this stuff was out in the middle of the woods. Zander is the one to break the silence, glancing at the others sheepishly. "Is it bad I kinda want a Twizzler now?"
"Hey."
The four teens scream, turning around with wide eyes because of the sudden voice. They all calm down upon seeing Jet behind them. "Jet," Tabitha puts a hand over her fast beating heart that she tries to calm down. "Don't sneak up on us like that. Gonna give us all a heart attack."
"Sorry." Jet apologizes. "I come here sometimes to think."
Ricky furrows his eyebrows. "Seriously?" He glanced at the table before looking back at Jet.
"When I'm hungry, I eat the Twizzlers. When I'm thirsty, I drink the crystals." Jet explained.
Maeve glances at Tabitha with confusion. "You can drink crystals?" Tabitha shrugged in response.
"You're messing with us." Ricky realizes. "Though I guess the crystals would explain your voice."
"Yeah, you have a killer voice." Zander commented.
Ricky nods in agreement. "Dude, everyone's still talking about your audition. Seriously, like, where'd you learn how to sing like that?"
Jet crosses his arms, shaking his head. "It's a long, stupid story."
"I'm sure it's not stupid." Tabitha reassured him.
"Yeah," Ricky agrees. "Try us."
Jet sighs. "Basically, I, like, raised myself on YouTube 'cause my parents were always at work, and I taught myself how to play piano. Taught myself to sing, too, I guess. And then I had this music teacher at school, and she pushed me so hard that I sort of forgot what I liked about it to begin with. And my grades tanked, and my mom put me on ADD meds. But it didn't work 'cause I don't have ADD. I have AAD."
"Sorry, 'AAD'?" Ricky asked, looking at him with confusion.
"Yeah, um, what's that?" Maeve questions, furrowing her eyebrows. "I don't think any of us ever heard of AAD."
"All Adults Disappoint." Jet replied.
Ricky hums in response, nodding in realization. He chuckles a bit. "I will admit it was a stupid story, but wasn't very long." He laughed along with Jet.
"If it helps, I didn't think it was a stupid story." Tabitha chimed in, earning a small smile from Jet.
"Thanks."
"He laughs." Ricky smiled.
"And smiles." Tabitha added.
Ricky nods in agreement. "Look at that."
