Carson

Melody hates me.

Emma Murphy; 1:32pm

I sat in my last class of the day as I received that text message. In confusion, I sent back a reply.

Why? What happened?

Carson White; 1:33pm

Melody freaked out when she saw Diesel.

She left the room for a long time.

Ms. Foster then went to go see if she was okay.

Mel didn't tell her anything...

So, when she came back, she asked me if I knew anything.

I told Ms. Foster about the party...

Melody was so mad when she came back to class.

Emma Murphy; 1:36pm

I clenched my jaw in order for it to not fall open in shock. I hadn't planned to tell Ms. Foster because Melody has explicitly told me not to do so. But she hadn't told Emma not to. I was surprised that she did, but glad that she did. Diesel needed to be reported.

I'm sorry she's mad but you did the right thing.

Carson White; 1:38pm

Emma was right. Melody was furious when I saw her after school. Leaned next to her locker, I watched as she walked briskly towards me, eyes glued to the floor. Her nose was pink, the only indicator that she'd been crying. She barely said anything as she traded her books, slamming everything a little too hard.

"How was your day?" I asked, as I got into the car. I started up the car as I watched Melody's face fold into a frown.

"Emma told," she said, causing me to pause as I put my seatbelt on. I wasn't sure how to approach it, but I figured the truth was the best option.

"I know," I said quietly. The look that crossed her face told me otherwise.

"What? Did you two plan it or something?" she asked angrily.

"We didn't plan anything Mellie," I said, trying to calm her down.

"You told her about the bruises!" she snapped.

"She texted me later that night, because you hadn't responded to her or Alani all day and she was worried. I mentioned it because I was worried too. I am worried!"

"No one has to worry! I'm fine!" Melody yelled. I sighed and watched as she turned her head slightly to look out the windshield instead of at me. Her lips were pouted, the rims of her eyes were as pink as her nose was, and she looked tired. Though she had said she'd gotten some sleep, I wondered how much that really was. I pulled out of the parking spot.

"Did you want to come over?" I asked.

"That's okay; I know you have to study for your chemistry quiz," Melody replied.

"I can study while you're over," I insisted. I just wanted her to be by my side, to know that she was okay.

"Don't worry, really. I think I'm going to try to get some sleep," Melody said.

"Alright if you're sure," I sighed. Maybe she was mad at Emma and I. Maybe she wanted to be alone. Maybe she really did want to sleep. I couldn't tell, so I dropped her off at home and watched as the puzzle that was Melody walk into her house.

After studying for chemistry for a bit, I decided to call Melody and see if she was okay. There was no answer after a few rings. I wondered if she was sleeping but decided to wait to call her again. I studied a little more, however I found myself glancing out the window every now and again, in case there was some chance I'd see her walking around at the park.

Hey Mellie. I hope you're not mad at me.

Call me when you can.

Carson White; 5:43pm

"Boys! Come for dinner!" My mom soon called from the kitchen. I got up from my desk and walked downstairs. My phone was clutched in my hand, waiting for it to vibrate with a text message or a call at any moment.

When I walked into the kitchen, the delicious aroma of food wafted towards my nose. I noticed Connor already helping set the table as my mom was pulling a dish out of the oven.

"Are you gonna help or stand there making googly eyes at me?" my brother joked. I stuck my tongue out at him and put my phone down at my spot, then grabbed some glasses out of the cupboard.

When the table was set, I sat down and picked up my cellphone, checking for missed calls or texts. Nothing.

"Carson, no phones at the table remember?" my mom said as she put down a serving dish filled with Shepard's pie.

"Sorry, I'll be quick," I said, my fingers typing quickly.

Hey Mellie, please don't be mad at me.

Emma and I didn't plan anything...

She just texted me after she told Ms. Foster.

Please call me.

Carson White; 6:14pm

"Carl, dinner!" my mom called, as she sat down. She suddenly turned to me. "Is everything okay?" Her honey brown eyes stared into mine and I looked away. Moms read too much when they see eyes.

"I – uh – yeah Mom. Everything's cool," I lied as my dad walked up to the table.

"Smells good!" he said. My dad kissed my mom on the forehead and then sat down.

"Thanks honey," she said, luckily distracted from questioning me.

As we ate, Connor shared a story about his day, which had my parents laughing, but I could barely focus on the details enough to crack a smile. I simply wolfed down my food as fast as possible, so I could hurry up and call Melody again.

"Carson?"

"Huh?" I looked up to find my family staring at me.

"Are you okay son?" my dad asked.

"Yeah, I just have a quiz tomorrow. I have to study. Excuse me," I said quickly, picking up my plate and putting it into the sink.

"Cars! Your phone is ringing," Connor shouted. "Ooh! Who's Emma Murphy? Playaaaa!"

"Oh, shut up," I replied, running over to the table and grabbing my phone off of my chair. "Emma? Is everything okay?" I asked as I left my family sitting at the table in confusion.

"I was going to ask you the same thing! Melody's not answering my calls or texts. I was hoping she was with you. I just want to know if she's okay." Emma sounded so stressed out on the other line.

"I have no idea. She's not answering me either. She said she was going home to get some sleep, but I know she's been having some trouble sleeping... maybe she finally got some?" I replied. As I got into my room, I closed the door behind me and put Emma on speaker.

Mellie, are you sleeping?

Carson White; 7:08pm

"I hope she's not too mad at me. I only told because she literally left the room in a panic and Ms. Foster went to go see if she was okay, and she didn't say anything and so when she came back she was hounding me for answers and I didn't want to protect Diesel and –"

"Hey, hey, hey. I'm sure everything's okay," I interrupted. "Even if she's mad right now, you did the right thing. I'll call her again and keep you posted okay?"

"Okay, yeah keep me updated," Emma said before hanging up.

As soon as she was off the phone, I called Melody again to receive no answer.

Mellie, I'm a little worried.

Please call me.

Carson White; 7:31pm

I waited around for a bit before getting up and pulling my coat on. This felt out of character for me. I wasn't someone who freaked out or got paranoid, but somehow, I found myself dashing out the front door and driving over to Melody's.

I drove up to her house and noticed the light in her room was on. I pulled over and parked by the curb before I called her again. When there was no answer, I got out of the car and backed up until I could see through her window. She was lying on her bed, flat on her back. I called her again and could see her stir slightly, but she didn't move much beyond that. I hung up and watched as she shifted marginally again. She seemed okay, so I concluded she was sleeping, or wanted her space. At least I knew she was okay.
