006. i'm not the mum friend

chapter six
i'm not the mum friend

"Pope we're not stealing the drone, we're borrowing it."

The group were driving towards the scrapyard, and John B was trying to reassure Pope that they weren't doing anything particularly wrong, considering the boy had been protesting about the plan since they left the hotel. Pope had moved to sit next to Athena, to which she was happy about, turning around to lean against the back of Kie's chair and put her legs over his lap. The boy had his arms crossed dramatically while staring out the window, attitude clear on his face.

"Humans are the only animal that can tell fantasy from reality." Pope recited.

"Did you come up with that?" John B asked him.

"Was that Albert Bernstein?" Athena questioned with furrowed eyebrows.

Pope smiled, pointing at her. "See, another reason why she fits in here, she is smarter than you lot."

Athena let out a laugh. She may not be good at maths or physics or... most school subjects, but she was good at quotes and who said them. She could tell you who said any random obscure quote, or sung any song lyrics. She didn't know why really, probably because she watched a lot of documentaries as a child because it's what Dorota loved to watch.

"And like Thena said, Albert Bernstein came up with that but it applies to this whole treasure hunting thing." Pope answered John B.

"Oh."

"So which is it," Pope continued. "Fantasy or reality?"

"Why you so weird Pope?" JJ piped up. Athena leant over to where he sat on the floor, rolling a joint in his hands, slapping his arm. The boy turned to her in slight shock.

"He's not weird." Athena told him. "Just smart."

"It's fantasy but possible reality." Kie replied to the Heyward boy.

"Reality." John B nodded.

"Virtual reality." JJ muttered, about to light his blunt. However before he could, Pope snatched it out of his mouth, throwing it on the floor, it now lost in the back of the very messy van.

"Keep the signal clear."

"You are such a mum friend." Athena scoffed, JJ pointing at her in agreement.

"And you aren't?" Pope retorted.

"I am not." Athena disagreed, shaking her head. "My friendship group doesn't have a mum friend, there isn't enough of us, they all left me." She then laughed slightly, "I don't even have a mum."

The silence in the van was deafening as both Kie and Pope turned and stared at her in slight shock, John B's eyes widening and he would have turned and stared if it wasn't for the fact that he was driving. It wasn't until JJ broke it with a small laugh that the tension dissipated.

"Same." JJ lifted his hand up to high five the girl, which she happily did. "We should start a gang, pogues only. If you don't have a mum come along."

"I'll be there, ready and waiting if you do." She smiled. Pope nudged her as the van came to a stop, them finally arriving a few metres from the salvage yard. Athena swung her legs off of Pope, climbing over JJ and opening the door.

"Hey." JJ spoke up as she turned to close to the door. "Be careful."

"I think I should be telling you that." Athena nodded between him and Pope. "Don't kill each other."

They shared a small smile before she slammed the door, walking around the car to meet Kie. Kiara linked arms with her as they made their way towards Kie's car, the HSM pogue connected to it. Athena hopped in the passenger seat as they drove into the entrance of the salvage yard. The girls got out of the car, Kie letting out some of the air from her tyre before they made their way towards the security guard.

"Hello, hi!" The two called with large smiles on their faces, taking their role as the distraction seriously.

"Can I help you?" He asked, slightly intrigued as he looked up them up and down.

"I actually have a flat tyre, I was wondering if maybe you could help us out?" Kie ask him. The man stared at the two, not saying anything as his eyes narrowed slightly. Athena then stepped forward, letting out a deep breath, knowing that the boys needed this plan to work.

"We can leave if it's a trouble, we just thought we needed someone strong like you to, you know, help us." Athena put on an innocent smile, gently flicking her hair over her shoulder. The man looked her up and down once more before looking over at Kie.

"Yeah, I can help." He walked away, going to get some tools.

"It's too easy." Athena stated as she stepped back next to the brunette, who nodded.

"That was gross." Kie muttered.

"Yep." Athena played with her necklace in discomfort. "Kill all men 2020."

"Preach."

The man then returned, Kie showing him the tyre she had let down moments earlier, "It's just this back one right here. I mean, it must have been a slow leak or something."

"Probably just been sitting in the yard too long." The man suggested, the two girls nodding their heads with small smiles. "Yeah, I-I got this."

He then bent down and started to work. The girls stood anxiously as they waited, sharing concerned looks every few moments. However, their glances turned into wide eyed looks when a dog suddenly started to bark, making Athena jump slightly.

"Did you hear that?" He spun and asked them.

"Heart what?" Kie answered making Athena sent her a narrowed eyes 'really' look.

"Oh Teebow's got something." Athena assumed Teebow was the dog that was currently barking. She looked behind her, not seeing anything in her eyeline.

"It's probably just a raccoon, maybe. You know." Athena smiled at him. "Nothing to worry about."

The man looked at her, his eyes darting to her chest before he nodded, bending down to continue working. Her eyebrows knit in discomfort once more, pulling her playsuit up slightly before hitting Kie subtly. It was a signal, one that Kie understood, nodding as she rushed to other side of the car, letting out air from another tyre.

"Okay that's it— w-wait where's your friend?" The man had furrowed brows as he stood up, staring at Athena suspiciously.

"Oh she's just grabbing something." Athena told him, swallowing her saliva. "A-are you finished?"

"Yep all done."

"Awesome, but I think there's another tyre that is flat on the other side of the car... just follow me." Athena lead him to other side of the car. Her eyes widened at the sight of Kie still crouched down, spinning around. "On second thought—"

"What are you doing?" The man had stepped around Athena and was now staring down at Kiara.

"This one looked a little low too." Kie tried to make up an excuse, but it sounded more like a question than a statement. The man quickly caught on, running in the direction of the salvage yard to see what his dog was barking at. The girls tried to shout after him, but it was no use, the man was gone, rushing in the opposite direction to them.

"Shit!" Kie ran to the other side of the car. "Get in!"

Athena quickly pulled open the passenger side door, jumping in the car before slamming the door shit. Kie turned the engine on, reversing and driving off.

"Can we leave them?" Athena asked.

"We have no other choice."

Athena let out a sigh, knowing that Kie was right, and she just hoped the boys were okay. Athena turned to look at Kie's side profile, reminiscing on all the times her and Kie would do this a few years ago.

SUMMER 2018

Kiara Carrera and Athena Cameron sat on the latter's bedroom floor, music blaring from the speaker in the corner of the bedroom. The familiar sound of New Romantics by Taylor Swift bounced around the room as they sang along loudly while making friendship bracelets. Athena's was purple and white while Kie's was a light grey colour. They had spent the entire day in each other's company, having made pancakes for breakfast earlier that morning with Wheezie before getting dressed and dancing to Taylor Swift while they cleaned Athena's bedroom.

The door suddenly swung open, scaring the two girls slightly as they turned to face Rose who stood in the doorway. She laughed slightly at the wide eyed expression on the two's faces. Athena's scared expression morphed into a smile as she looked up at her step-mother.

"Hey." She greeted the woman.

"You girls okay?" Rose asked with a soft smile.

"Taylor Swift and friendship bracelets, what more do we need?" Kie shrugged letting out a small laugh.

Rose nodded, laughing. "Well I'm heading into town if you two wanna go on a drive?"

Athena perked even more, if that was even possible, at the idea. She turned to Kie with a hopeful smile, knowing the girl couldn't say no to her. Kie finished her bracelet, tying to end off and handing it to Athena was a nod.

"We'd love to." Kie answered Rose, holding a hand out for Athena to take once she had stood up.

Athena smiled up at the school, taking her outstretched hand and allowing Kie to pull her up. The two followed Rose, putting their shoes on before they left the house and got into Rose's car. Athena got into the passenger seat, while Kie sat in the middle seat in the back, leaning forward between the two front seats as Athena plugged her phone into the aux.

The three girls practically screamed the lyrics to the ABBA song that came on, laughing at their respective terrible singing abilities. Once the song ended, Athena turned to face Kie suddenly.

"Oh my gosh, I forgot to tell you." She shook her head and let out a breath. Kie's eyebrows raised as she leant forward in curiosity. "So, I was speaking to Topper, right, and he was saying that Luke told him that Rachel, in our second period science, um, has been talking shit because she caught Sage making out with her ex best friend, Quinn."

Okay, in hindsight, Athena knows what you're all thinking. Topper! She was gossiping with Topper! You probably thought she hated Topper! Well she does. Athena dislikes Topper a lot, but that was mainly because he was one of those boys that act differently around his friends and girlfriend than he does in private. Athena liked gossiping with Topper because it was the only time he hung out with her, just the two of them, and so Athena saw the real Topper, not the jackass Thornton Kook.

Topper cared for Athena like she was his best friend, which sometimes she felt like she was, and he would never left anything bad happen to her, or at least he tried to. Athena cared for Topper, she truly did, he just did a lot of things in public that aggravated her. He also knew absolutely everyone and so he was the best person to gossip with, which is something Athena lives to do.

"At the party?" Kie asked.

"Yeah, because we were playing seven minutes in heaven and she landed on Quinn." Athena shook her head again. "Rachel was fuming, like she basically tried to fight Sage when they bumped into each other at the mall the other day. Luke was messaging Topper about it because he saw it all."

"Why hasn't Sage said something?" Kie wondered.

"I have no idea." Athena shrugged. "Her parents and grandparents have been having lots of arguments about something lately and now they're being really secretive and like grounding her for no reason."

"I hope she's okay." Kie frowned.

"Chin up buttercup." Rose looked at Kie in the rear view mirror after sharing a glance with Athena. "I'm sure she's okay. Sage's a strong girl, she'll come back to you eventually."

Kie let a small smile spread across her face as they sped down the road, a one direction song now playing on the radio. Athena shared a look with Rose, who raised her eyebrows in response before giggling to herself. The girl grabbed her phone, typing out a message and hitting send before turning around and continuing to gossip with Kie about anything and everything that came to mind, as they had done every time they saw each other since becoming friends.

PRESENT

Athena blinked out of her memories, looking over at Kie, who was concentrating on driving towards the Chateau or anywhere she could find the boys.

"It's been a while." Athena stated, making her look over at the blonde.

Kie thought for a moment before nodding, "I guess it has. A lot has changed since then."

"I'm sorry." Athena told her sincerely. "I know we made up that night, but we didn't exactly stay close. I wish we did."

"It's not your fault." Kie shrugged, though her tone was heavy with emotion. "She's your sister I didn't expect you to suddenly change your way of life to hang out with me and this lot, and back then, you seemed happy with the kook lifestyle."

Athena nodded with a small smile, "I guess that's because I had everything. I don't have that much waiting for me back in kook land nowadays."

"Me neither." Kie sighed. "I'm glad you're here. I hope you stay with us."

"I have a feeling this is just the beginning." Athena smiled, the two laughing as they sped down the road, a sense of positive deja-vu settling over them.
