Sweater Weather and me
20 minutes later
I nibbled at my salad entree, not because I wasn't hungry and didn't love food but because I was trying to be ladylike. Everyone around me was dining really politely and fancily. Unfortunately, things can only last so long with Julia. As soon as the main(steak and mash potato with glazed carrots) was served, I ripped in like a wolf. Across the table, Thomas had his trademark smirk on his face as he watched me eat. I probably smashed all feminine stereotypes. Despite the cheesy 'love is in the air' music and sing-song waitresses who waltzed around the place like ballroom dancing; this food was really tasty and nice. Like really tasty and nice.
As I paused from my feast to tie my hair in a messy bun to continue eating Thomas from across the table laughed at me, before reaching across with a napkin and wiping off something from my nose. My heart did its strange happy dance whenever we touched. He was so beautiful. I sighed contentedly to myself when ding ding! What now? I opened up my phone only to see a text:
Are you two in science because I can see the chemistry!
I whirled around only to see Evelyn winking very obviously from the other table; Sam opposite her oblivious as he was texting on his phone. I had almost forgotten they were there! I shook my head and turned back just as Thomas turned back as well. Sometimes when we were in sync and unison, it was kind of creepy.
"So... Are you enjoying the food?" He asked, preparing to keep eating.
"Oh yeah!" I quickly answered, his question reminding me how hungry I was. Not long after that my fork and knife clattered onto the empty plate. Right on cue, more waitresses came in with more dishes. I noticed they were all pies. Chicken pies. I gagged. It was cringeworthy. One of them started walking towards us.
"Um... We didn't order these, it must be a mistake." Said Thomas quickly as she placed the pie on the table. She brushed off his remark with a laugh. Annoying sing-song laugh.
"No, no, no! This is the chef's lovers special!" She began in that annoying retailer tone you'd get in insurance companies. I had the feeling she rehearsed this speech gazillion times. "Gourmet chicken pie made courtesy of 'Touché Cupid Meals'! Made specifically for two lovers!" I rolled my eyes.
Nearby I could hear the muffled voices of Sam and Evelyn through the cheesy love music.
"She/he is NOT my Boyfriend/Girlfriend!" In perfect unison. Yet again. #shipforever
My attention was drawn back to the sick-looking evil pie waiting for me. I scooped a little out and nibbled at it. It was SO chunky and dry and chocked full of chick peas. Did I mention I hate chick peas? Ugh, I held a hand over my mouth as a precaution I wouldn't gag. Chef special my behind woman. It was disgusting. Across the table, I could sense Thomas swallow a couple times, although his grimace showed that he was anything but close to liking it.
"It is so dry and chunky." I said to no one in particular.
"Yeah." He agreed taking big gulps of water. Then we shared our vile hatred towards chicken pies, which was peculiar in the least. Who would have thought? His pet peeves? People who are selfish. My pet peeves? People who block the hallway and walk really slow when I am trying to run to class. He laughed at that one. Favorite books? Harry Potter. My favorite books? Any John Green or Harry Potter books. Go Fault in Our Stars!
The strawberry parfait I had ordered and the waffles Thomas had ordered were served. Let me tell you. They did not disappoint at all. This restaurant might be tacky and grossly sappy and ducking at chicken pies but let me tell you. They serve hella good food. This was going perfect and we were having a small fight over who should pay.
"I'm paying," I said grabbing through my bag for my wallet.
"Nuh uh," insisted Thomas already reaching for his pocket. "Ladies never pay."
I pouted and crossed my arms. "Ugh, that is so sexist!"
Then he looked at me and said," you look cute when you're annoyed."
Way to throw me off guard. When I had recovered he was already placing the cash on the money tray. I rolled my eyes at how stubborn he could be. Stubborn like me. Tee hee. When he returned I ensued a death stare between us, my blue eyes stabbing daggers into his cinnamon caramel ones. None of us wavered, none wanting to be the loser. My competitive streak was getting the better of me when- flick. Something wet and very cold landed on my sweater. What the heck? I paused briefly and looked down only to see a streak of ice cream on my sweater. I froze, heat rising on my face.
Thomas victoriously smirked, " I win-" another flick.
He halted, his hand slowly going up to his face, his cheek dotted with splashes of ice cream. We both whirled around at the same time eying our culprits like predators. Sam and Evelyn. Mainly Sam. They shared a sheepish cheeky smile and dashed out the door. Thomas briefly nodded at me and we jolted up from the table in heavy pursuit after them.
They are so going to get it, I thought to myself. It was on my sweater. New fashionable easy-to-stain sweater. I followed closely behind Thomas, our footsteps even on the pavement ground as we speedily tailed after them. It was hard to keep up with the shadowy figures so far ahead of us but after a while we slowly began to gain on them. The wind whistled in my ears as Thomas swiped for Sam his fingers just brushing the back of his collar. So close, so close when Bam! Sam grabbed Evelyn's hand and they both hurtled down a dark alleyway. I repeat, dark and scary criminal-hideout-looking alleyway. Thomas swiftly stalked behind them leaving me alone.
Oh no. It wasn't just the dark that made me scared, it was the fact that as I followed them, the walls were painted with many clowns. Yep, clowns. Fake smiles, triangle paint and all. You know that frozen feeling when you are too petrified to move. Multiply that by infinity and now our feelings are even. I whirled around, the dark all around me. Where did the moon go?! I couldn't see anything all pitch black but I had the sudden feeling hundreds of clowns' eyes were looking at me. I gulped down the sensation to faint. Dang it! Which way was the way out? Was it left? Or right? The pitch blackness and silence made my blood curdle and I stumbled around, my arms stretched out.
"Sam? Evelyn? Thomas?" My voice came out scared and frightened as I ran around, no longer knowing which way was the way out or which way I was heading. It was SO dark! My vivid imagination started to scare me with chain saws and ghosts with long hair that hid their face, robed in white tags, hands dripping with blood... The clowns' stare still kept following me. No one would hear me if I screamed. Shut up Julia. You are scaring yourself.
"Thomas!" I cried out even louder and desperately, my knees feeling weak. I could hear whispers and silent cackles, making my hair stand up. Dang it Julia, you just had to run down here! You pathetic person. Then without warning a hand wrapped around my mouth and waist tackling me to the ground. I screamed as loud as I could. I didn't care that it hurt. I had better things to worry about! Like I had learnt, my elbow went to the serial killer/kidnapper/ghost/mugger's stomach when I breathed in the familiar smell. Of cinnamon and mint. I froze.
"Sam! I- (a definite pause of like 10 seconds) Julia? Is that you? Are you okay?" It was a voice. A British voice. Holy chicken stir fry.
Relief did not even begin to explain it. I unravelled from his grasp and leapt into him in a bear hug.
"Thomas! Thank god! I was so scared and lost and-"
"It's okay. It's okay."
"I was so lost. You're a jerk for leaving me." I said into his shoulder, wrapping my arms around the crook of his neck.
He returned the hug reassuringly.
I sensed a smile through the dark and heard, "I think, I found them. They're probably hiding behind the trash bin. We are going to wait for them to come out and then we are going to jump scare them."
His voice was so soothing in the dark and I calmed down from my scare. That and a trash bin? I scooted near some bags and squatted there, Thomas right behind me. His reassuring hand in his shoulder. I tried not to think what could be in the bags. A body? Julia, calm down. I strained my ears to listen and my eyes slowly adjusted to the dark. I could hear giggles and sense movement coming in front. We moved in closer and closer, our footsteps quiet as can be. I felt like a spy on a secret mission. Well... I was on a mission, to kill Sam and to scare the cheese out of both of them.
Thomas's fingers counted down in the black. 3....2....1....
"HANDS UP POLICE!!!!!!!!!!!!" We both screeched in unison a meter away from them. Well mainly me, I had the high pitched scream after all. The words exploded through the air.
Evelyn gave a bloodcurdling scream and Sam gave a loud yell. We got them good. A click clack noise and Thomas turned on a small flash light( he had a flashlight?!). Evelyn had leapt onto Sam and had wrapped her hands around his neck. Cute. I wished I had a camera. As their eyes adjusted to the sudden blinding light Thomas smirked as Evelyn hopped down looking utterly embarrassed.
A couple awkward seconds. They seemed to be both searching for a good insult or comeback but instead Sam lamely spluttered out," what the hell was that for?!"
I shrugged and kept grinning. "You flicked ice cream at us. Plus it was fun seeing you scared out of your manliness."
He rolled his eyes. "I wasn't scared!"
Even with the light, I still clutched Thomas's arm. Don't judge. But all was well and forgiven. Not long after we said bye, Thomas and I walked back to the car where once again Thomas's uncle was. As I had anticipated Thomas slammed the door as usual- SLAM! SLAM! But I was way too giddy and tired to care. I was also smiling a lot and day dreaming about someone.
At the front of my house, I hugged him tightly and gave a kiss on his cheek. I would have loved to actually kiss him but I just didn't think he wanted that yet. What is with me... let's not go into that. As I tossed and turned in my bed to get a better position, I couldn't stop the smiling.
'Your safe with me'....
" I'll always be safe with you," I murmured hugging my pillow as though it was him.
So tell me... What are you scared of? I am actually scared of being alone in the dark so Julia and I have something in common! Please VOTE and have an awesome day. Also I am trying to get to a 1000 views so please share it and get the word around.
Ps. I didn't make this date too special because there may or may not be another soon. And she may or may not help Thomas is return. Wink wink. Updating on Sunday.
K Byee!
