And those pretty paper hearts...
Well what do you know. The sun was shining, those annoying birds next door were chirping; and at around 8:00 a loud thump could be heard all throughout the house as I fell facefirst onto the floor, as usual. What a beautiful wake up call. With a slight wince, I brushed those annoying long bangs out of my face and hoisted myself up, trying to remember what I was supposed to remember. Something was amiss. It just didn't feel right. Then I remembered. School. Holy-
My stomach did a double flip and jolted upwards, a sick feeling now lingering in my mouth. It was the first day of school. Great. And to make matters worst I was going to a new school, where people would gawk at me as I tried to blend in, as usual. Like come on. Was my face really that ugly?
Anyway It was no use sulking around. I slouched into the bathroom to get ready for the day, and just happened to glance in that mirror mum always hid in the corner. A pale face with chocolate tresses stared back with a frown. In this family, I've always been taught not be vain, but I couldn't help but feel self-conscious. I was not pretty or beautiful unlike my mum who falls just below gorgeous. I am just... average. At least I have clear skin. If I didn't have such pale skin, and such doe-like eyes, I might even pass for cute. Oh well... what to do.
I hurriedly threw on my newly-ironed uniform and after a quick gulp of milk and a bite of those cranberry muesli bars, I jolted out the door and quickly braided my hair in a Dutch flower braid on the way to school. A lot of my bangs fell out and cascaded around my neck but I could use them to shield my face. That way, hopefully no one would notice me.
Soon those large steel gates greeted me with welcoming arms, although they might as well have been holding up a butcher's knife with a psycho grin. I nimbly slipped through and rushed into the hallway, hoping to tangle myself within those confusing webs of hallways and jostling students. But I failed miserably. I didn't get far, before I face-planted on the welcome mat with an unmistakable splat. Instantly the whole hallway froze and I felt everyone's eyes lock onto me. Brilliant.
Now that that situation was at hand, I suddenly felt conscious of my short pleated skirt that barely brushed my knee caps. A few very awkward seconds slipped by... Well done, Julia. You barely made it 10 meters before you make a fool of yourself. New record, yippee. You fail in life. I sensed my cheeks going pink and hurriedly walked away, still feeling those eyes burning into my skull. At the back of my mind, a part of me wanted to cry. I always failed at this, why even bother to look nice? It never ever worked.
Unfortunately, my day only got worse. They had assembly to introduce the new students. Great. Everyone was going to remember me as the newbie who face planted and tripped over her own feet and forgot her speech. I couldn't shake off that feeling of helplessness as my introductory speech went all blank. All of those debating tips I had learnt suddenly vanished and before long, I felt sweat bead my forehead and my breath became ragged. Thankfully though, I was last in line so maybe I could just copy a speech. But just as a hunched grey-haired lady hobbled/ran onto the stage, I glanced to my left and my mind suddenly went blank.
Oh. My. God.
Help. Me.
Sitting right next to me, second last in the line, was in the most impossible way possible, the most attractive boy I had ever laid my eyes on. I found myself staring, choking on my thoughts.
He didn't notice me although I didn't expect he would. He just sat next to me, looking so carefree, knee propped up and his head resting on his hand as though he were asleep. Ginger brown hair with the slightest shade of blonde curtained his face and swept over his closed eyes, the shadows just concealing that slight smile. Look away Julia! Look away dang it! We were so close to each other out knees were practically touching. He was so gorgeous and adorable, I mentally noted. I then hurriedly looked away. Shame on you Julia, it's rude to stare and you are here to study. Not to gawk at boys! Right as I scolded me myself for being so pathetic and feminine, I realized that the boy had silently walked onto the stage. I heard the chorus of gasps that followed. But ALL the people in front had already gone?! I immediately brushed my bangs back and straightened my blazer, inwardly cursing. Then as I was trying to pin my hair down, I heard a lovely voice with a slight accent filter into the mic.
"Um... Hello. My name is um... Thomas and I am a transfer student."
Now that I heard that, my head instinctively bolted upwards and I saw that boy's slim build standing there. He was slightly nervous with his hands plugged into his pockets and for some unknown reason I found myself spellbound, my gaze held there as that boy, most likely british, talked about his age and his love for reading. He also gave a few facts which on a normal standard would have been Einstein-ish and nerdy but this just made him intelligent, good-looking and nice. This seriously ticked all the boxes. Not that it.... Mattered anyway.
He said something else but I was too busy remembering every detail for myself and probably drowning myself in jealousy for whoever his girlfriend would be. Every single stutter was just perfect, and that smirking smile that radiated off his ridiculously attractive face was literally a very well-aimed arrow shot from Cupid.
Something was wrong with me. But none of it mattered, I reminded myself sternly. But still... gorgeous was an understatement, he was devilishly handsome. Dang it Julia! Since when did you fall for boys? I wasn't the only one though so I was fairly justified.
The crowd was now a mix of drooling girls probably announcing him as bae and boys shooting dirty looks. Now they had competition, although they couldn't even begin to compare with him. You know what? Maybe if I survive this, I talk to him so that at least he knows I exist. Maybe I could even catch his eye. Yes, that would be a great plan. Then once he rounded of his speech(perfectly) and strolled away, with his face turned away, you could almost hear the sighs that rippled through the crowds.
I was still drowning when my heart was suddenly plunged into icy water. My speech! S.h.i.t. I shakily walked onto that dreaded platform and gripped the microphone stand as though it would support and I wouldn't fall over... again. I was responded with hard stares and I could almost feel my cheeks burning down in flames.
Come on, I reprimanded myself, just say your name, age and what you like. The mic gave a high-pitched wail. Great. It hates me already and I haven't even started.
"Uh... hello everyone," I began clearing my throat and nervously thumbing my fingers," I am Julia and I am turning 16...."
Oh no! What do I like?! Talk about a brain fart. I racked my head trying to come up with something. "I love reading, and um... I really love the color blue."
That's it right? I quickly ran/tripped/wobbled of stage, knowing that the audience were staring at me and was probably trying not to laugh. Seriously, the color blue? It's the color purple! I might as well get a permanent marker and scribble LOSER on my forehead. I continued to berate myself on how bad I made myself look. Why does this always happen? All I needed to do now was stay invisible, Keep out of trouble and not fall over anymore. Right? Wrong.
I was so busy running/tripping/wobbling that I heard a grunt of pain, pummeled into something, tripped over(again) and landed very hard on someone, pinning them to the ground beneath me; my head banging on their collarbone. Unfortunately for that someone else, he or she slightly took the fall for me. Emphasis on slightly.
Oops. I groggily opened my eyes, my vision all fuzzy and slowly clearing. that's when I realized who I was lying on top of. Thomas! Oh. My. God. Well this is awkward. I shot up, practically yelling my apology before bolting away. But that had not been before his cloudy pained expression cleared and those cinnamon eyes had looked into mine with what? Anger? Shock? Confusion?
It was surprise and something else, It wad only for that split second though. Also technically he had been forced to look at me; seeing as how I had physically pinned him to the ground with my face inches from his. But it was still eye contact! Wow. Now I was even getting desperate. It was great that I was running/bolting away because he probably wouldn't see me 1)blush furiously 2)scold myself for being such a dumb klutz and 3) laugh and smile I realized I had been actually been lying on top of him. You know, how bodies together and everything.
My heart was still throbbing in my ears as I panted. You are so weak, I scolded. Poor me. Poor him too, his first impression of this good academic school was an socially awkward teenager pinning him to the ground, painfully I might add, with her face shoved into his ( incredibly attractive) one. Now I thought about it, his was kind of like those sappy cheesy movies. Maybe I had a chance? Shut up Julia! This was reality not some Hawaiian day dream. But inside, I felt all warm and cheerful. As I continued to run away(I had stopped my getaway to daydream) I was scarcely aware that many meters or so behind me, a pair of beautiful cinnamon diamonds were staring at me as I fled from the scene, my plait unravelling and billowing out behind me In the wind. Yep. I had definitely caught his eye.
