Six | Candy and biscuits

Love is much like a wild rose, beautiful and calm, but willing to draw blood in it's defense— Mark Overby

Kemi was very impressed when she stepped into Nnamdi's house. His living room had a lush decor.
The walls were painted deep blue, sky blue and white and it looked so heavenly. There were lava lamps on either side of the home theater system which comprised of a large high definition television, two large speakers and two little ones, a DVD player and a DSTV decoder.

There was also a plush zebra striped rug at the center of the living room which had a glass table on it. Kemi smiled when she noticed a large brown teddy bear resting on the side of the sofa.

"You have a very beautiful place," she admitted finally.

"Thanks." Nnamdi had watched her keenly as she admired his living room and he could tell that she was really impressed.

"Please make yourself comfortable," he said while handing her the DSTV remote control.

"Thank you," she mumbled while sitting down on the zebra striped couch. She glanced at the TV, she was surprised he had been watching The Boss Baby. "How old are you? I never tagged you as a cartoon lover," Kemi said laughing.

He shrugged, "I'm 26 and what do you think I watch?" he asked smiling.

26? she thought. We're compatible I'm only 23.
Kemi you see your life!

Kemi pouted, "Horror?"

"Ouch, I hate horror," Nnamdi laughed. "I'll be right back."

"Okay thanks."

Nnamdi left the living room wondering while she kept thanking him. He then realized that he hadn't even offered her anything. Some host! He scoffed.

Minutes later, Kemi sat and watched him as he worked on his Mac laptop. She was mesmerized by the way he flexed his fingers while typing on the computer, he was concentrated and relaxed.

Kemi admired the house again.
She noticed a painting of a beautiful aged lady hanging on the wall behind her.
"Who's this?" she asked curiously.

"My grandma," he answered without looking up.

"I ermm... I heard she was sick? Is she better now?"

Nnamdi looked at her with a raised brow, how did she know about it? he wondered. Nifemi probably told her because she was there when he had asked for an early leave. Did she ask about me?
"Of course stupid she was probably wondering why she was coming to give you files at home," His mind reminded him.
"She's better now thanks for asking," he finally said.

Kemi looked at the juice on the glass table, it had been enough to quench her thirst but she was a little bit hungry. She had missed breakfast this morning, she signed wishing that she had listened to her nagging mother.

"Kemi eat oh, see how thin you look. How will get husband looking like broomstick," her mother had complained when Kemi had said she was leaving without breakfast.
The woman exaggerated a lot.

"Nnamdi."

"Hmm," he answered while looking up. Nnamdi liked the way she said his name, even when she had bumped into him she had whispered it softly.

"I'm a little bit hungry," she pouted and to Nnamdi she looked like a cute little girl.

"Oh!" He cleared his throat. "Well you can find something you like in the fridge," he suggested pointing to the refrigerator at the corner of the room, near the door that led to his bedroom.

"Okay thank you," she stood up and headed to the fridge. It was a medium sized LG refrigerator which had a little freezer. She signed when she opened it, what did you expect, candy and biscuits? she thought.

The fridge was nearly empty except for few bottles of fanta, some green apples and oranges. No foodstuffs! "Maybe he has another freezer in the Kitchen," she concluded.

She opened the little freezer and smiled. "Well look what we have here!" she whispered.

There were packs of Snickers chocolates, little sachets of M&M's and a pack of eclairs. There were also some bottles of water and Coke zero. She grabbed few bars of Snickers and a bottle of Coke. She opened a sachet of eclairs and popped it into her mouth then she bit into the Snickers bar.

"I said you could get something from the fridge i never said you could raid my freezer," Nnamdi said looking at her with an amused expression.

Kemi glanced at the man–child before answering, "Your fridge is boring," she mumbled but it was loud enough for him to hear.

Nnamdi suppressed a smile as he turned back to his work. She looked cute while munching the chocolates.

She was about closing the fridge when something caught her eye.
It was a brown jar on the refrigerator which had cookies written on it.
Without thinking Kemi dropped the chocolates on the top of the refrigerator and grabbed the jar, it slipped from her hands and fell with a loud crash.

"Oh God!" she exclaimed. "I'm so sorry," she stooped to gather the broken pieces of glass and chocolate chip cookies.

"No don't touch it!" Nnamdi yelled as he approached her.
"You could hurt yourself," he whispered as he squatted next to her. He watched as Kemi used her fingers to rub her face smudging chocolates on her cheeks.
She looked like a little girl. A cute one.

Nnamdi swallowed. Kemi looked up and caught him staring at her. He quickly looked away.

"Are you always this clumsy?" Nnamdi asked his voice full of anger.

"I'm sorry...my hands must have been slippery, I'm so sorry," she apologized her coco brown eyes shining with unshed tears.

Nnamdi felt something tug at his heart. "You should leave."

"What?" Kemi looked at him wondering whether she heard wrong.

"I said you should leave now," he stated. "I'll bring the files over when I'm done with them."

Kemi stood and looked at him, she was visibly angry. "Very well then!" she murmured standing up.
She walked to the sofa, picked up her bag and headed to the door.
She paused and looked back, Nnamdi was leaning on the wall and looking at her with a confused expression on his face.
She walked back to the fridge and took her Snickers bars and bottle of Coke.

"Thank you for your hospitality!" she snapped poking her fingers on his chest with each word. Nnamdi chuckled which infuriated her more. Kemi turned and stormed out of his house.

Nnamdi watched her leave and concluded that it was for the best.
He didn't like the feelings he had around her. He scratched his head and looked at the mess on the floor. It wasn't because of the silly jar he had asked her to leave. His grandmother had given him those when he had visited her, they were sugar free cookies and he wasn't even planning on eating them.

He had acted on impulse, he had been scared. Her scent only was enough to cloud his mind and make his heart beat faster. And the way she had been looking at him, her lips quivering and the chocolate smudge on her cheeks.

"Arrgh...." he shouted sliding down to the floor. He put his hands on his face.
He didn't want to feel this way, he hated this feeling of weakness.

💎💎💎💎

Kemi breathed deeply as she left the estate gates. She looked at the sign board and scoffed.
"Dolphin estate, more like jerky estate."

She brought out her phone and checked the time, she had never been a fan of wristwatches. They always seemed to grow legs and get a one way ticket to Lostville.

"Twelve pm I never knew I stayed that long!" she exclaimed.
Eeh when you were eating all his chocolates abi?
"Stop it, don't remind me of that handsome jerk with beautiful eyes and ..." Kemi you are so pathetic!
She thought.

She didn't feel like going back to work, so she decided to go home. She would call Evelyn and tell her that she wasn't feeling well but she knew the woman would still pile up her work for her.

After all she wasn't lying, heart break was a sickness right?

Kemi decided to take the bus home. She walked a little more to get to the bus stop. There were several yellow buses, some of which were blaring loud music and the conductors screaming their destinations at the top of their lungs.

Kemi noticed that there was a mini market by the side of the road. Trust Nigerians to make good use of any opportunity to sell their wares. Goods ranging from fruits to sweets and drinks even to cooked food were being sold. Being a sweet tooth, Kemi walked towards were a young girl was popping corn using a pot which had a handle on the lid.

"Ermm... Please how much is your popcorn?" Kemi asked while dipping her left hand inside her hand bag to get her purse. "No be me dey sell ma, I just dey make the popcorn" (I'm not the one selling ma I'm just making the popcorn), the little girl replied while vigorously turning the handle on the lid in order to pop the corn. It was an alternative for the popcorn machine.

The girl, who should not be more than thirteen years, directed Kemi to an elder lady who stood in front selling popcorn to customers.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't notice," Kemi apologized handing the girl a two hundred naira note for taking her time.

After listening to a string of prayers and purchasing her popcorn, Kemi quickly hopped inside a bus when she heard the bus conductor yell G.R.A. That was where she lived with her parents.

She watched as the conductors fought for passengers and was thankful that she got into a bus on time. She didn't want their dirty hands on her or the strong foul smell emanating from their mouths entering into her nostrils. They would even lie just to get passengers.

Aunty bus is almost full oh!

Broda AC dey my bus!
(Brother there is AC in my bus)

Aunty that one no sabi drive well!
(Aunty he doesn't know how to drive)

Uncle na executive bus be this!
(Uncle this is an executive bus!)

She munched her popcorn as she waited for the bus to get full. She noticed the young man sitting opposite her was leering at her.
Some Men sef! she thought.
She quickly got her phone and sent a text to Nifemi.

Don't ever think of sending
me on an errand again.
If you want to know what
happened,
Call him yourself!

As she leaned against the window, Kemi wondered why Nnamdi didn't like her. She then blamed herself for falling in love with him.
