Oluwakemi Bankole strode quickly into the conference hall, her heels clicking on the marbled floor. The hall was used for the company's meetings, luncheons and parties and recently they've been having a lot of boring meetings.
She sighted her friends sitting at a corner. Adaeze was, as usual, babbling about what she did and where she went over the weekend. Nifemi on the other hand was listening obviously uninterested.
Kemi laughed softly, she knew Nifemi did not like sitting alone with Adaeze whom she nicknamed daddy's girl.
Odd, we don't usually sit here.
Nifemi waved her over her relief reflecting on her round face.
"Well hello beautiful, you are really rocking those heels," Adaeze said with obvious admiration etched on her well made up face. The only thing she admired was fashion, any other thing could take a back seat.
She had on a black pencil gown that accented her lovely figure. She was of average height and also had a glowing light skin.
"I know right," Kemi said drawing out a seat. "My mum got them for me."
"I love your mum's fashion sense, she's definitely going to pick out my wedding dress for me," Ada giggled.
"If there'll ever be a wedding," Nife said under her breath. Nife was wearing a red shirt and a flared black skirt. She wasn't very tall but her lovely features made up for her lack of height.
"What did you say?" Ada said glaring at Nife. The latter rolled her eyes.
"So why did we seat here?", Kemi was glad that she was able to distract the two from strangling each other's necks.
She crossed her long legs, tugged at her pleated short blue skirt to properly cover her legs and observed her friends from under her long scattered lashes.
"So we can gist without being seen duhh," Ada giggled.
Gist lover, Kemi thought smiling.
"And so we can make side comments, remember what happened the last time we were caught."
The trio giggled.
It hadn't been funny then.
"So when is the meeting starting? I've been here for like ten minutes, I'm hungry," Kemi whined pouting her lipgloss coated full lips. The top lip was her skin color while the bottom was a light shade of red.
"Oh stop your whining, you even came late haba," Nife chided, "and besides were waiting for the board of directors," she added pointing at the raised platform with her well manicured nails.
"Don't you mean the boring directors," Ada murmured rolling her beautiful chocolate brown eyes.
They laughed sending a few glances their way.
Kemi smiled, she loved these girls.
Although Adaeze could be such a pain in the neck sometimes and Nifemi treated her like a child, she still loved them.
Adaeze Ndubuisi lost her mum when she was five, being the only child she is, not surprisingly, her dad's treasure. Thus, earning her the nickname from Nifemi.
Nifemi Smith on the other hand was a single mum with two kids. Life had been hard for her until she got a job. When Adaeze had asked her if she was going to give dating a try again, she had answered, "Well, at least we're not hungry or naked and the kids are going to good schools. I obviously don't need a man in my life, not anymore."
Kemi still thought she secretly wished for a father figure for her kids, Kikelomo and Tobiloba, both from different men. Well that's a story for another day.
Kemi on the other hand lived with her parents, she was their only child. Her mom owned a boutique in one of the most popular malls in Enugu and her dad was a Civil engineer, he worked for the federal government.
"What are you thinking about?" Ada said cutting into her thoughts.
"Nothing," she said patting her box braids. The hair was just two weeks old and it was already itchy.
"Attention everyone the meeting starts now, thank you."
"Finally," Nife said throwing her hands up in the air.
"Who else thinks this guy is hot because I do," Adaeze exclaimed.
"Him?" Kemi asked.
"Which kian, don't just call him 'him' Engr. Kelechi Okafor, manager of Crystal Ltd. is definitely not just a 'him'," Adaeze said with a dreamy look on her face.
Nife nudged her. "He is not even the CEO and you're already drooling over him."
Ada had a bad habit of crushing on rich handsome men but she didn't make any advances.
"Oh so you think I'll fall for the CEO of this company, that oversized beanbag."
"Don't be rude," Kemi said laughing softly.
"She's right now, Engr. Desmond Agu is so fat that the very ground trembles when he tiptoes, I wonder how his wife copes?", Nife agreed putting the word tiptoes in air quotes.
"God you two are just..."
"Ladies, any problem?" Kelechi asked looking at their direction. Their laughter had obviously disrupted the meeting.
"No sir," they chroused.
"And you said they wouldn't see us," Kemi whispered after a while.
"Ehehn don't even start," Adaeze retorted with feigned annoyance.
The three friends giggled.
Kemi quickly scanned the hall with her eyes, where was he?, She thought. Almost immediately, she saw him sitted at the front row of the conference room looking down at the paperwork in front of him. God, was there any man as handsome as Nnamdi Okwundu?
Dark brown eyes completely focused, his jet black hair was cut short and his side jars running down the length of his chin, He was fit and well built. She watched as he tapped his long slender fingers rhythmically on the table in front of him.
"Hmmm," Kemi said dreamily as she wondered what those hands could do to a woman.
"Kemi"
"Kemi," Ada repeated jabbing her at her side.
"Ouch that hurt!"
"Ehehn, I didn't know" Ada replied sarcastically.
"Whom or what are you staring at like that? I've been watching you for some minutes now and you've been oohing and aahing at something," Ada poked her cheek.
Kemi hissed and slapped her hand off. Ada always poked her nose into other people's business.
"Are those even words? And I haven't been..."
"See eeh I take God beg una I don't want to lose my job oh," Nifemi chided. "Please keep quiet now haba."
"Fine," Ada said, "but I still have my eyes on you," she whispered to Kemi.
"Whatever!"
Kemi took a quick glance at him again, If wishes were horses, she thought signing.
