✍ Chapter Four✍
Four | Playing Hero
Sometimes the heart sees what is invisible to the eye— Jackson Brown Jr.
*quick recap*
"Heavens no, I was only staring at Nnamdi, he..." Kemi stopped abruptly as she noticed her friends staring at her wide-eyed.
"So it's him you like?" Nifemi and Ada chroused.
~•~
"Ermm, I didn't..."
"I mean how can you like 'him'" Ada said using her hands to make the quote sign in the air.
Kemi observed her for a few seconds while trying to keep her temper at bay. It didn't work so she finally snapped, "and what's wrong with him?" Kemi queried narrowing her eyes to slits.
Ada shrugged obviously unaware of her friend's brimming anger,
"I dunno, maybe because he is dull, reserved and what's with that scowl he has on his face all the time!"
Kemi took a deep breath stopping herself from reaching across the table to slap the smirk off Ada's face.
"Well I think he's very handsome and nice," she retorted gritting her teeth.
"And I think you're just lovesick," Nifemi countered pointing her chicken lap at Kemi. She had ordered fried rice and chicken.
"What do you mean?" Kemi snapped turning sharply to Nifemi.
"Nice? C'mon you hardly even know the guy."
"I bumped into him once," Kemi blurted out immediately wishing she hadn't done so.
"And so? I bet he pushed you out of the way saying something like 'are you blind?'" Ada chipped in while pushing her salad round her plate.
"That's not what he said, he..." Kemi stopped, she wasn't about to tell her friends that he had been rude to her. She still had dreams about how well it would have ended if he hadn't been a jerk.
Rooftop dinners, chocolate gifts, diamond necklaces and maybe roses.
"Any hoo, I'm going to get more salad cream this salad is just bland!" Ada complained interrupting her thoughts.
"You and salad sef, don't you eat any other thing?" Kemi grumbled.
"I'm watching my weight duhh," Ada retorted as she headed towards the food court.
Kemi signed glanced at Nnamdi, he looked so cute. She wondered how he would look on their wedding day with his tuxedo and all.
"So, when did you start?" Nifemi asked looking at Kemi with her hands on her cheek and her elbows resting on the table.
"Start what?" she replied without taking her eyes off him.
"Liking him of course!" Nifemi snapped using her hands to bring Kemi's face back to her food. The young woman had forgotten where she was, she really likes him, Nifemi mused.
"Well I dunno, it just happened." Liar! Kemi's mind screamed at her. She could still remember that it had been Nnamdi who showed her to her office on her first day of work. He had been curt and straight to the point, he hadn't even bothered to socialize. Well, Kemi hadn't minded, she had been too busy admiring his handsome features.
"I don't remember," she lied.
Nifemi scoffed and folded her hands across her breasts.
"So..." Ada said as she sat down.
They had a few minutes left till lunch over. "My cousin who took JAMB this year gave me her copy of the JAMB novel to read, I think the name is Independence and..."
"It's In dependence," Nife interrupted spooning some rice into her mouth.
"That's what I just said!"
"You said Independence, there's a difference between 'Independence' and 'in dependence'." Nifemi smirked, she liked making Adaeze uncomfortable.
"Whatever," Ada snapped dismissing Nifemi with a wave of her hand. "So as I was saying before a lower specimen interrupted me," she glanced at Nifemi and smiled sourly.
Nifemi scoffed.
"So I read the book and my summary is that Tayo guy is a total womanizer!"
"Adaeze is that your summary? And to think that I expected something better," Kemi said while Nifemi held her stomach laughing.
"But it's a good book, I admire the writer's finesse," Ada continued.
"I find it hard to believe you read the book," Nifemi murmured still laughing.
"And why is that if I may ask?"
"Well for someone with your size of brain, it's hard to believe you actually read a book."
"You take that back right now!" Ada shouted jumping to her feet.
"Lunch is over," Kemi said holding Ada's arm. They were already attracting stares and Nifemi just kept laughing, she couldn't care less.
Meanwhile at the other end of the cafeteria, Nnamdi tugged at Kelechi shirt as he ignored a bimbo who winked at him.
"See that's the reason I don't like her," Nnamdi said to Kelechi. They were walking out of the Cafeteria when they had witnessed the little drama. "She and those her friends they're just too loud, shouting, giggling or quarrelling all the time."
Kelechi looked at his friend and shook his head pitifully. "You know you don't sound convincing, even to yourself," Kelechi replied him laughing softly. Nnamdi scoffed and opened the swinging doors.
"I think she likes you," Kelechi commented.
"Who?"
Kelechi pointed at Linda and laughed as Nnamdi gave him a deadly glare.

*Still that same day*
Kemi walked down the hall to her office, her head was throbbing badly. "God, Ada and Nife are just so childish," she said to herself.
They reminded her of Mordecai and Rigby, in the 'Regular Show'. Good friends now but the next minute they were biting each other's heads off. She didn't miss the way Nnamdi had looked at her, what did he feel disgust, repulsion or probably...
"So you want to eat all the food in the cafeteria abi?" Evelyn shouted at Kemi cutting short her thoughts. She was wearing a blue gown that jumped up to her knees, it made her look like a deflated balloon.
"Good afternoon ma!" Kemi replied glaring at her boss. Couldn't she wait for her to enter the office first.
"And what is good about the afternoon eh, tell me? I gave you a report to write where is it?" Evelyn snapped at her impatiently.
"Ma, I don't know what you are talking about!" Kemi exclaimed.
Her boss was fond of this, putting responsibility on her head.
"I left this note on your table or you want to tell me you didn't see it abi?" Evelyn said waving a piece of paper at her face.
Some office gossips were poking their heads out of their office doors to see what the commotion was all about.
Emmanuel was leaning on his door waiting for Kemi to look at him so he would swoop in and rescue her but she purposely avoided his gaze.
"But... but ma what of Nancy?" Kemi hissed was getting tired of these useless exchange.
"But but what, you are so idiotic!"
Some workers snickered at the comment and Kemi felt tears sting her eyes. She looked down at her shoes admiring her cream flats Happy thoughts, think happy thoughts Kemi!
"I didn't know the note was for me!" she said in a small voice.
Evelyn enjoying the attention continued, "How will you know, tell me how..."
"That's enough ma'am!" a firm husky voice said interrupting Evelyn. The two women looked up and Kemi gasped when she saw Nnamdi standing a few feet away from them.
"And who are you?!" Evelyn retorted her disgust lacing her voice. She eyed Nnamdi and hissed but she couldn't deny that the young man was good looking.
If only Nancy would set her eyes on this one, she mused.
"You have no right to talk to her that way... ma'am," Nnamdi said ignoring her question. He obviously didn't like Evelyn, I mean what's with those bulgy eyes.
Evelyn hissed. "We wouldn't want any one to get fired now, would we?" Nnamdi asked, his eyes darting from Evelyn to Kemi. They lingered on Kemi for a while before going back to Evelyn.
Evelyn glared at him, who did he think he was? Just because he was friends with the manager, Kelechi. And Kelechi is friends with Desmond so one more word and you're out! her mind reminded her.
Kemi seemed to sense her internal struggle, "I'll get to it ma'am before the close of work, I promise."
"You'd better!" Evelyn said storming into the HR office.
Kemi turned to thank her knight in shining armor, "Thank yo..." Her voice trailed off, he was gone.
She glared at the frowning Emmanuel and stormed into her office.
Kelechi laughed as Nnamdi walked back to meet him. He was leaning on the wall close to the elevator with his hands in his pockets, they had come to investigate a case of theft in the accounting department before Nnamdi had wandered off. It turned out to be a case of a colleague pranking his co-worker. He let the guy off the hook but not without a warning then set off to find his friend.
"I figured you had ditched me to go play hero to some damsel in distress," Kelechi commented smirking at his friend.
It wasn't just some damsel, it was Kemi, Nnamdi thought sourly. Kelechi smiled as his friend told him what happened.
"So you recognized her voice hmm, that's why you went..."
"I went to see why that woman was shouting with that horrible voice of hers, and it just happened to be Kemi she was shouting at," Nnamdi interrupted.
"And besides," he continued, "it's no big deal."
"I bet she didn't think so, what did she say to you?"
Nnamdi shrugged, "I left before she could say anything."
"Modest are we?" Kelechi said obviously taunting him.
Nnamdi could still remember her face, eyebrows pulled down in the cutest frown, pursing her full lipgloss coated lips, hands across her chest, coco brown eyes...
"Stop it," he mumbled to still his thoughts.
"Say something?" Kelechi asked observing his friend tentatively.
"Nevermind," Nnamdi said as they stepped into the elevator.
