Chapter 3: Alpha Cayden
Back in the mansion two soft knocks resonated through the room. At the sound Alpha Cayden looked up from his work.
"Enter," he commanded looking at the door.
He gave his permission and the door opened revealing the Luna of the pack as she made her way into the office. Cayden tensed knowing that his mate would not come down here unless she had something important to discuss.
And this time would be no exception, if her determined expression was anything to go by.
"How could you do this Cayden?" She asked in anger. "To Misha's daughter? To her family name? How could you dishonor the McCormick name, and put aside the friendship and help that family gave this pack for centuries?" She demanded, her face red.
"Misha brought dishonor to her own name and to our clan by marrying a human," The Alpha spit viciously. "And now her human daughter is paying the price, Lilian."
Lillian stared at her beloved mate as if he had grown a second head. Shaking hers in disbelief, it was like she was seeing him for the first time.
"So you give her freely to that animal? Cayden, you know the rumors about him, what he does to young girls! But, that didn't enter your mind when you sold what isn't even yours!" She exclaimed in ridicule.
His wolf was coming very close to the surface, his usually brown eyes turned black, "How dare you speak to me this way Lilian! I would remind you who you are talking to!" he growled.
Lillian's breath hitched in fear in the face of her mate's rising anger.
"This is my pack and I will rule it as I see fit," he continued. "Deval gave me a chance to buy the river that gives us water. Remember that Lillian?" he spat, his eyes fully black, "The one we had to beg like sniveling rats for every year so our people wouldn't go thirsty. And yes, I signed that human brat's life to Deval, she and her mother have been a stain on this pack for a long time, it was time to get rid of that trash." He heaved in anger.
Obedience was something Alpha Cayden demanded from his mate, and was something she had always given to him, but she could not sit by as her old friend's daughter was given away to a man who would likely use her for no other purpose than as a sex slave. Lillian had caught glimpses of the girl around the pack, and had watched as she had grown from a child and into a beautiful woman. Deval had obviously seen the same.
Casting a glance at her mate, whose anger was calming down, she asked when he would take her.
"I am going to get her right now."
"I will never forgive you," she spoke softly.
Just as Cayden's eyes widened with fresh anger, his beta contacted him through the pack link.
"What is it?" he demanded, jaw clenched.
"She's running."
Cayden cursed, how the little brat could have known - he hadn't a clue, she always seemed to know everything. It was something else he hated about Misha's brat, she always seemed to look at him with those unusual knowing emerald green eyes of hers. They seemed to always be laughing at him no matter the situation. None of it mattered anymore though, he'd catch the little brat and drag her back and be rid of her for good.
"Gather the men I want her tracked down and brought to me now!"
"Yes alpha."
Alpha and luna sat silently in the in the office waiting for news. Lilian hoped that Misha's daughter had escaped while Cayden hoped they would find her before Deval found out. The hands on the clock hanging on the office wall moved and time passed. It was night when the doors of the office bursted open and an enraged Deval bounded in.
"She's gone?" he spat looking like a crazed man.
"Calm down." Cayden began raising his hands.
"Don't tell me to calm down." Deval roared slapping Cayden's hand. "This is you, you did this."
"I didn't do anything. She must have found out somehow but it wasn't me." he growled back.
Right as Deval was about to make a grab for Cayden, the trackers returned running in and falling at Deval and Cayden's feet.
"She's - she's ... too fast." They puffed out between breaths. "She's always one step ahead of us. We tracked her to the next state, Delton and Black are out there now still chasing."
"You mean that human maggot out ran you all?!" the snake snarled. "You foolish dogs! Do your men mean to tell me that they could not find the girl? That mere human out ran you all?" he screamed.
His pasty translucent face was a mass of red blotches, his veins bulging from his skin, and his teeth protruding from his blood red gums in sharp points.
"Calm down Deval. We will catch the girl, and you will get your end of the bargain." Cayden reassured Deval.
"You better see to it that I do Cayden, or it's your head."
Cayden swallowed his anger. He hated feeling helpless. He hated that he could not punch Deval in the face, but most of all he hated the green eyed witch for once again embarrassing his pack.
She will pay dearly for running from me, even if I have to drag her back here by the roots of her hair myself, He snarled to himself, picturing how he would hand her over to Deval after. He'll know how to put the brat in her place once and for all. He thought with a wide chilling smile.
A young wolf not yet in his fourth year of shifting approached the alpha "Alpha, we've found where she's hiding.
Yes. He thought with a chuckle to himself. You will pay, witch.
"I will get some of my wolves." Cayden said.
"You can do that, I won't be relying on your mutts for nothing." Deval snarled walking out.
The wolves from the Bane pack looked at the disappearing form of Deval with anger contempt.
"Are you going to let him talk to us like that alpha?" one of the trackers asked growling.
"Never mind that," Cayden dismissed them. "Get the men and let's go."
Despite the Luna's protest, Alpha Cayden left and arrived at the location along with Deval and his wolves. It was little old run down shed in the middle of a little clearing center in the forest. They had been tracking her for a whole day now. How she had managed to make it three states north he didn't have the slightest clue. Grudgingly, he admitted that she was resourceful, but today her luck runs out. Slowly the werewolves advance on the little house.
Alpha Deval shifted, walking stark naked up to the door. "Come out little mousey, Daddy's here to take you home." He sang in a broken melody.
Cayden felt his wolves move nervously.
"Are you sure we should give her over to him? We all hate the little human but I kinda feel sorry for her." One said over the pack link.
"Shut your trap Mike, you're not here to ask questions. We'll drag her out of there if we have to."
"Yes Alpha." Came the meek reply.
"Oohh mousey!" He sang. "Come out, or I will break this door down!" He finished on a scream.
Suddenly a dark figure darted from the back of the house into the forest. Deval snarled and shifted back into his wolf, diving for the figure, but it zigzagged avoiding him taking off faster than ever.
With an unusual knowledge of the lay of the land, it lead the wolves on the biggest obstacle course of their lives. Coming to a large gash in the earth she leapt, feet slipping slightly before regaining her footing and hauling herself the rest of the way. The wolves on the other side growled in anger. Backing up they each launched themselves over the ditch and continued giving chase.
The wolves chased as their prey zigzagged from left to right never running in a straight line forcing the huge wolves to make sharp and dangerous turns. Suddenly the figure stopped and turned around. The wolves continued to run with great speed towards their prey. Then the oddest thing happened, the figure start running towards them! The wolves who gave no indication of slowing down continued throw themselves across the distance unable to stop the head on collision. When abruptly the prey dropped, slid and rolled between their open legs in a huddled ball skillfully dodging fatal claws before getting up and taking off at full speed.
Disoriented and confused they quickly realized that she was running the other way. Turning quickly, the wolves trampled one another accidently sinking their claws and tearing flesh in their attempts to turn and follow the girl. Howling in pain many of the wolves fell.
In the chaos, Deval ruthlessly crushed the head of one of his subordinates using him to push himself up. The poor wolf gave a little whimper before Deval's claws sunk in his head killing him instantly. Alpha Cayden shouted mind linking his wolves to get out the way. Thankfully they complied. Regaining their senses they took off once more after the girl.
Reaching the house once again, the figure brusquely stopped. Gnashing his teeth, Cayden launched himself at her, both hitting the ground with a loud thud. The tumble threw the hood from the girl's head, revealing her face to Cayden's fury.
Only it wasn't a girl, it was a boy with a shock of flaming red hair and a large grin plastered on his freckled face.
"Please don't hurt me for selling illegal beer on pack grounds Alpha"
Alpha Cayden growled furiously at the boy. "Red!?"
