CHAPTER FOUR
Rise of Demigods

THEY WERE RATHER CONFIDENT TO BELIEVE ONLY THREE GUARDS at the wide, gilded doors could stop a crowd, let alone one person. The sun was beginning to set, the Temple glowing brightly against the dirtied roofs of the industrial factories, the diamond of Capitol Ithaca among the coal. To act as if those around them were privileged to be anywhere near the sandal clad feet of the Gods where many bowed to thank for their service and their goodness in this world.

The guards were heavily muscled, in chain armor. A quick scan showed the stream of Immortality in their veins, and the restlessness I felt only became worse as I aimed and fired, a loud bang! that echoed off the golden walls, and yet none paid any attention. A shuddering gasp left me, expecting him to drop as they did in entertainment archives, a mess of blood. Yet he only stood there, looking down at the now healing gap in his left shoulder, almost incredulous.

I had not prepared for it to fail. How mistaken I was.

The three came to their senses, when the sinew and flesh finally pulled itself together over the wound, not even a scar to cross his shoulder, and finally lunged, the spear of the second one impaling me through the hand that I threw up to guard my face, a Human reaction.

Sparks flew, and wires exploded. Golden ICHOR poured from it, a response to protect the wires from any further damage.

"Gods be damned!" he yelled, "it's an android! Get backup!" The third jumped into the fray, grasping me by the throat to lift me up over the thousands of stairs that led to the doors. I may be an android, but such a fall could damage every port, every sensor, until I was nothing more than a crumpled heap of metal and gears.

And then the doors exploded, in a ball of fire, smoke rising from the pyre cannon that had come up from the side when neither of us had been looking. Pyrrha smiled victoriously at the dazed guards on the ground -- behind her, a crowd of Demigods awaited, barehanded except for the vials of Fire coursing through their veins my Epimethius had finally perfected before his death, that would spare the unfortunate Mortals before I opened the Vault.

So they would not meet the same fate as my husband.
