Epilogue

Five years.

It has been five years since the haunting night, since the night that changed the course of the pack forever.

While many forgot the Montgomerys, some people couldn't.

Under the name of the Mongomery, the pack hadn't seen its full glory, but it finally got its chance to, now that someone else was in charge.

Everyone, at least all the wolves, now knew them as the Crescents. Sure, it wasn't creative, but it got them the attention they needed.

But the name wasn't the only change the pack saw.

Wolves from all parts of the world left their pack to join Isla's, for they saw this as a revolution against the norms followed by werewolves.

Isla couldn't have made herself more proud.

But every year when that fateful night returned, she could feel something pain in her heart.

After all, you never truly stop feeling guilty.

All she saw was the body of an innocent girl whose life she had ruined. Who she promised to reunite with her mother and broke the little trust she had in her.

And alas, for the fifth time, the night returned.

Isla walked deep into the forest, just like she did every year.

She sat down on her knees, beside the spot she had buried Gwenyth and Valerie.

It probably doesn't mean anything, but I'm sorry, Isla thought.

To her own surprise, she found herself missing Valerie every year, even though all she did was make everything harder for her.

I could have trusted you more, but it's your fault too, she mumbled, picturing Valerie in front of her.

Maybe she could make it up to the both of them someday, but there was someone she could never make it up to.

Hayden wanted the world to know her name, and Isla erased it from the world.

If only I realise sooner that what I did was not the right thing to do, Isla thought, sitting at her spot blankly.

Still, she tried convincing herself that Hayden did forgive her.

If she didn't, why hasn't she cursed me yet? Isla would say to convince herself.

One hour was all she wasted feeling guilty for she had things to do.

She had to run the biggest pack ever and make everyone stare in awe.

"You look glum." a short girl with brown eyes said.

"Oh, it's nothing. It's just that day again." Claudia replied.

She did do what she said she would. It took a while but she had finally found a place for herself in the city, a place right beside her house

"Well, I don't know what to say but you should feel proud about how much you've changed." she said to which Claudia gave a small smile.

She did struggle for the first two years, doing all sorts of odd jobs to survive. And it only took six months of convincing from her roommate, Stacy, for her to finally applying for a real job.

She got rejected several times, after all, who would want to hire someone who hid in the jungle her whole life and had no work experience.

But, for every hundred failures, there is one chance at success, which Claudia took.

Now, she had a stable job at the accounting firm and she couldn't feel freer.

She had everything she wanted. Money, a house of her own, which she shared with her roommate, and most of all, someone she could trust to be with her at all times.

"You know I'm glad I met you, right?" Claudia asked.

"Yes, you say this every year." Stacy replied with a giggle for which Claudie wrapped her hands around her.

She finally felt like herself.

The silence soon turned to chatter.

The solitude soon turned into a huge crowd.

With every passing second, someone new would pop into the afterlife and be reunited with someone they lost.

It wasn't that case for everyone though.

Gwenyth lay on her back and stared at nothing. She felt bored every day and kept to herself all the time.

Sometimes people would come and talk to her but she always found it weird to make small talk with dead people.

Nobody she knew was here and it angered her.

She could still remember the days she ran around, calling out to her mother, hoping she would embrace her.

But one year of screaming made her realise that she wasn't going to come.

Now, she barely thought about her mother, or anybody from her past life.

She would just sit by herself or take a nap.

After all, there wasn't much to do.

It was just another one of those days when she heard a familiar voice behind her.

"Gwenyth?" a shaky voice spoke.

Gwenyth turned around and tears formed in her eyes. In front of her stood her mother, looking exactly as she did before she died.

Gwenyth leaped from the ground and jumped onto her mother, sobbing onto her shoulder.

"I've tried so hard to reach out to you-" her mother began but stopped as Gwenyth motioned her to.

"I know you'd never intentionally abandon me." Gwenyth spoke as her voice broke.

"Gwenyth, I love you." she said.

"I love you too, mom."

And just like that, all her loneliness was subdued. Her death didn't seem pointless anymore because she was now at peace, with her mother.

"I'm glad you came for me, mom."

"It's still just the two of us, huh? Valerie asked.

"I don't mind it as much as I thought I would." Hayden said.

"Don't be surprised, but me neither." Valerie said.

Both of them sat on the floor as Hayden put her hand over Valerie's. It took a while but Hayden found herself enjoying Valerie's company again.

"You know you're a lot more forgiving than me." Valerie said.

"We all make mistakes." Hayden replied as they stared at the forest.

"Does Isla not get tired of doing this every year?" Valerie asked with a chuckle and Hayden simply nodded.

"She has everything I wanted, except peace." Hayden said.

"If you got to choose, would you pick all of that or peace?" Valerie asked.

"That's a hard one. But if I had all of that, I wouldn't have you." Hayden said, snickering.

"Now you're just trying to butter me up." Valerie said.

I wouldn't forgive me if I were Hayden, but I'm glad, Valerie thought as she looked at Hayden. Maybe it was something about being dead that changed them and Valerie couldn't want anything more.

"I wish I could tell Isla that I forgive her too." Hayden said.

"I would too, she seems too obsessed with what happened five years ago." Valerie said.

"Wait, you forgive her?" Hayden asked, surprised.

"Apparently so. I guess time does heal all wounds." Valerie said, "besides it was kind if my fault too." Valerie said to which Hayden laughed.

Hayden swung her hand around Valerie's shoulder as they walked, stalking random people whom they found cute.

"Too bad that dude's alive, huh?" Hayden asked as they both giggled and held each other's hand, and let go of their past.

"I'm glad I found peace with you."
