Chapter 9
"Of course science doesn't have the answer, it's a waste of time," Hayden said, hinting at her strong dislike of it.
"That's what someone bad at it would say," Valarie said, putting her finger on her chin in deep thoughts.
It's not going to be a problem, is it? she asked herself, scoffing at Hayden's childish excitement.
"What's wrong?" Hayden asked.
"You're acting like a kid when I'm busy thinking," Valerie said.
"That sounds like a you problem." Hayden said.
Valerie stood up, her eyes giving a tired and empty look as she pondered on where she would go, now that she left her manor.
At least it was luxurious, she thought with a pout, her tongue craving for the delicacies her caretaker would prepare for her, with every detail in mind to fit her preferences. She could see herself throw open the gigantic, polished door, walking about ignoring everyone but the caretaker's presence.
"What are you thinking?" Hayden asked, getting up from the hard concrete that made her body as stiff as a stick.
"Home. You've proved yourself useless so I might as well think with food to snack on." Valerie said, waiting for Hayden's reply.
"That's great for me, for I have feats to accomplish." Hayden said, a smug look plastered across her face, her confidence reaching a whole new level.
They looked at each other, straight in the eye, both filled with determination.
"Good luck." they whispered to each other, heading their separate ways.
'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*'
Am I really going to go home? Valerie asked herself, debating with herself. While the thought of having food delivered to her without her needing to move sounded tempting, she would never apologize to anyone.
It hurts my ego too much.
She let her thoughts argue with each other, for it was rather fun to hear as her legs functioned on their own. With each step she took, footsteps behind her grew more prominent.
"What have you done?" a woman asked, disappointment and anger radiating from her words.
"Mother?" Valerie asked, turning around to look her in the face.
"Gwenyth told us everything," she said, walking closer towards her "you should have known better than that."
"I don't have time to discuss words by a deceiving witch." Valerie said.
"What I'd like to discuss is the fact that you have put us all in danger!" her mother spat with gritted teeth.
"What are you even talking about?" Valerie asked.
"She told us about your science experiments." her mother said, her eyes trying to show anger, but deep down the only thing she felt was worry.
Those words rang in Valerie's ears, her heart racing at speeds that would be considered illegal if she was on the road. Sweat ran through her spine as she stiffened her back as a reflex.
She shouldn't have known, she thought as panic ran throughout her body, leaving no place for hatred towards Gwenyth. She tried calming herself down, but in vain, for all her coven cared about was honor.
"Science isn't a crime you know." Valerie said, trying to kill her panic with sass.
"It is when you ruin the balance of nature. Every creature on this planet must die when they are meant to but you ruined that." she said.
Hearing this only increased her panic. She should have known that she couldn't have kept this hidden for long and that she should have aborted her mission the moment Gwenyth found out.
"You should've known that we would find out someday." her mother said.
"And you should've known that you can't stop me from doing what I want." Valerie said. If she was going to lose the coven, she'd rather lose it in style.
"You know what's going to happen next, right?" her mother questioned, praying that things could be different.
"Losing the coven doesn't sound too bad to me." she said.
"If you really read your ancestor's grimoire, you'd know that you have to lose your powers as well."
Her words froze inside her throat, threatening to not come out. Losing her powers was something she had never considered and it scared her. Although she had a deep passion for science, it didn't stop her from misusing magic from time to time, making life easier for her.
"Too bad you cannot take my powers away if I'm not there." Valerie said, throwing her right hand up in the air, summoning thick, grey smoke to surround them. As soon as she heard the coughing of her mother, she knew she could make her way out of there. Slowly, she maneuvered her way out of the smoke surrounding them and increased her pace as she stomped the ground beneath her, running away from the alleyway.
She's too old to catch up to me, she thought with a grin, making sharp turns every time a new path showed up without realizing where she was going.
Only after she ran a good couple of minutes did she stop to catch her breath. Sweat droplets fell from her temples as her legs finally gave up on her. It came to her as no surprise since she had always loathed running. Why run and jump around like an uncivilized animal when you could have freshly cooked food delivered to you to your bed?
She walked towards a public chair and rested her legs there. Her heavy panting died out slowly, finally giving her the state of mind she needed to process everything that had happened.
I feel bad for doing that to mother, but it was the only way, she told herself, her thoughts running back to her mother. She was already in her sixties and excessive coughing because of excessive smoke was only causing her more problems.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Her mother's coughing was the least of her problems, in fact, it wasn't hers at all, it was her mother's. She had more important things to deal with. Running away from her mother was easy, but she knew that she couldn't deal with the whole coven. She needed help, but she would never ask.
She wasn't going to compromise anything. It was true that she valued her life over anything else but even that wasn't enough for her to ask for help.
The only thing she could do was wait. Wait for Hayden to come to her, looking for help.
She's going to need it.
