Chapter 5

How do I know if it worked? Hayden thought as she made her way towards the forest. She untied the laces of her black sneakers and tossed them aside, letting the lush grass at her spot bring tranquility to her thoughts.

The forest on its own wasn't like a dreamland, it was rather rough and bare of grass. But her spot was something different. It wasn't maintained well, the grass was rather too big and needed to be trimmed and even so, this was the only place that let her fully be herself. A bloodthirsty wolf.

I am going to be the Queen of the pack.

She hesitated as she picked up her phone, waiting for Valerie to ask her about it. She would have called herself but Valerie was the only one with the number.

She stared at her phone screen blankly, her eyes blurring because of staring at it for too long. The rhythm of her heart beat began to variate, just not in the way she expected.

Everything around her, her body, the grass and even her breath seemed to drop in temperature.

Her eyes shot up in fear as she clasped her mouth as a reflex action. Her legs trembled, not in fear, but in tiredness.

"W-was this supposed to happen?" she asked with trembling lips, her legs no longer able to support the weight of her body. Her back slammed to the ground as her body turned numb, unable to relish in the grass she was a few minutes ago.

Pain rushed through her body, the kind of pain she had never felt before. She grew up believing that turning into a wolf was the most excruciating pain you could possibly deal with but this was different. It felt as if someone was cutting all the nerves in her body with a pair of scissors, as her organs began to completely shut down.

She struggled to keep her eyes open, to fight what had overcome her. Her strained eyes started to tear up in pain, her body immobile in the cold, hard ground. She had no choice but to give in.

I shouldn't have trusted her, she thought, closing her eyes and giving in to the darkness.

"Where is Hayden?" her father asked, in fear.

"What's wrong dad?" Cameron asked, placing his hands on his father's shoulder.

"I can sense death. Hayden's death." he said, managing to poise himself to the confident man he was.

"Who could've killed her? And why?" Cameron asked, trying to sound concerned but his dad knew all too well that this was a gift granted to him.

"I have to find her body. She rebelled against us but in the end, family has to stick with each other." he said, making his way out of the door, sniffing his way to her corpse.

Where am I? she though as blinding white light hit her eye by surprise. Her surroundings were empty. She turned her back to where she expected to see a wall but there was nothing. Nothing but bright, white light.

"Is this afterlife?" she asked herself in disbelief.

She walked forward, her footsteps echoing everywhere. Her thoughts raced back to where she was before death had befallen on her.

"I died." she said, realizing everything that had happened.

She stomped her foot to the ground, knowing all to well that it wasn't going to break. She knew that nothing that she would do would change what had happened.

She placed her hand on her chest as she felt something vibrate. Her heart was beating fast and loud, the same way it always did when she transformed into a wolf.

Why is my heart still beating? she thought, hope rising in her body. Hope that she might still be alive.

"How did she die?" her father wondered as he put his hand through her hair. He placed his ear on the left side of her chest, looking for a heartbeat.

"I know that we never saw eye-to-eye but you will always be family." he said, hoping that Hayden could hear him, wherever she was.

He looked at her in disappointment, his heart aching every time he looked at the cold, pale corpse that lay in front of him.

He felt the grass rustle beneath him, alarm rising in his thoughts.

Did someone follow me here? he thought, scanning the surroundings without completely turning around.

He felt it rustle again, only this time, he felt someone's breathing along with him. His jaw dropped open as he realized who it was that he was hearing.

Slowly, he stood up from the ground, backing away as quietly as possible. The rising and falling of Hayden's chest motioned him to run away while he still had the chance.

Her eyes shot up wide open, her body got up without consent. She walked towards her father, looking for someone to support her to stand still.

"H-how is this possible?" her father asked, fear running through his veins.

"I don't-" Hayden began, but something inside of her stopped her.

This wouldn't have happened to you if he made you the alpha, a voice inside her spoke. A voice that sounded exactly like hers- deep and insignificant.

Fear was overcome by hate as Hayden recalled everything that he had done to her.

He is the man who made me feel worthless, she thought, anger consuming every other emotion and thought that was circling around her head.

"You will pay." she said through gritted teeth, her body crouching to the ground as her bones cracked up, forming new ones.

"But it's not a full moon!" her father exclaimed in terror, turning his back on her as he began to run as fast as his legs could take him.

"You will not get away this time!" she exclaimed, her body half covered in fur, her eyes slit in the middle with huge canines gleaming under the moonlight. Her black fur almost completely camouflaged in the night sky, adrenaline pumping in her body.

She kicked her hind legs on the ground as she leapt forward. Her father was exactly in her vision range, making it easier for her to follow him. She jumped on him, causing him to fall as she clawed him to the ground.

He screamed in terror, causing Hayden's wolf's teeth to show out, her saliva dripping onto his face.

She stood on his body, feeling prouder than ever ash she raised her head towards the moon, howling.

She knew she claimed her power at that moment, since she howled and no one else did.

She put her claws through his torso, as he begged for help, his heart beating louder and his mouth gasping for air.

I can't even fight back, he thought as he stared into the moonlight and ceased to move.

The alpha was dead.
