"How exactly does this work?" Hayden asked, leaning closer towards Valerie's shoulder as she took a peek at the transparent, glass test tube in her hand.

"It's too complicated for you." she stated, getting back to her work.

"Don't you think it's fair that I know what's going in that thing?" Hayden questioned "Considering that I am vegetarian and everything."

"A vegetarian wolf? You never just ripped someone's flesh and ate it?" Valerie asked, puzzled.

"I lied, I'm not. I just wanted to know what's in it." Hayden said.

"Fine. I've been working on this for a while now." Valerie began.

"Do I have to know the whole story?" Hayden asked, impatient.

"Yes." she said, opening her mouth to speak again "I heard about researches that scientists had conducted on a microscopic organism called tardigrade." 

"Did it get it's name because it's always late?" Hayden asked, cracking up at her own joke.

"You are not funny." Valerie said, rolling her eyes in disgust. If there was one thing she hated, it would be jokes like that.

"Anyways, they are known for being almost indestructible. They can survive great temperatures and no oxygen." Valerie said.

"Woah." was all Hayden could reply with.

"I just walked in to my college lab and grabbed the jar that had them in it." Valerie said.

"You attend college?" Hayden asked.

"No, I had to drop out because my family is against science." Valerie said.

"Well that must suck." Hayden said "also, why didn't you grab just few of them?"

"First of all, it's microscopic. And I can't just walk around with a microscope to find exactly where in the jar it is. And second of all, in case I fail, I need back up." Valerie said.

"Right." Hayden said, nodding her head to everything Valerie said. She never liked science, neither did she hate it but this was the kind of stuff she was interested in.

"I just collected their gene samples and am about to transfer it to you." Valerie said.

"If that's all it takes, why haven't people come up with this already?" Hayden asked.

"They don't have magic, do they?" Valerie question as she cocked up her right eyebrow and curved her lips into what looked like a sinister grin.

"So you're cheating." Hayden said.

"Call it what you want, I don't care. It gives me what I want in the end." she said, flicking her wrist up as she placed it right on top of the test tube. She incanted incoherent words under her breath as her palms began to glow a bright orange colour. She flinched back, realizing how much of her power this was going to drain.

"What's wrong?" Hayden asked, worried.

"Worried about me already?" Valerie asked.

"I'm worried that you're going to pass out before giving me what I want." Hayden said, looking at Valerie's face. Her temples will filled with sweat, as she sighed out of breath.

"This just needs more power than I expected it would." Valerie said with trembling lips.

"Do you need help?" Hayden asked.

"I'm fine on my own." she said, trying to pull herself back together. 

Never look vulnerable, she thought, blowing lonely strands of hair away from her forehead.

She focused on the test tube on her hand, straining her eyeballs to stay open.

"It's ok to take my help-" Hayden began, but was dismissed by Valerie's other hand.

After a series of temperature changes, from high to low, Valerie let out the deep breath she was holding in. Her hand, which seemed to be glowing before stopped, taking her skin along with it and leaving a dark, blue mark on her hand.

"Is your hand ok?" Hayden asked.

"It's nothing that I hadn't expected." Valerie said, taking the test tube towards Hayden.

"You gonna inject me or something?" Hayden asked.

"No, drink up." she said, handing the concoction she had made to Hayden.

"Drink? I don't know why, but that sounds disgusting." Hayden said, her ear twitching in disgust.

"You can twitch your ear?" Valerie asked, impressed.

"Yeah, it is something I do almost all the time but I don't really know how." Hayden said.

"It's because of this muscle in the ear, many people have it but it's weak-" Valerie began.

"I'm not interested." Hayden said, cutting her mid sentence.

"Your loss." Valerie said, "I don't have all day so drink."

Hayden lifted it up and brought it closer to her mouth. She moved her nose towards the thick, black liquid and began sniffing.

"Smells like chocolate!" she exclaimed as she chugged it down her throat. Her head jerked up as her face turned from excitement to disgust.

"That does not taste like chocolate." she said, trying to get it out of her system. She stuck her mouth into her throat, trying to force her self into vomiting.

"I thought you really wanted this." Valerie said.

"I thought it would taste like chocolate." Hayden said, sitting down on the four-legged, black armchair beside her.

"That's the thing with magic," Valerie began, "you can make people believe what you want them to believe."

"This will make me stronger right?" Hayden asked.

"If my calculations are correct, it should do just that. Why'd you ask?" 

"The only thing I feel right now is light-headedness." Hayden said.

"Be happy it's nothing serious. Come tomorrow, I want to know how well it works." Valerie said.

"Wouldn't it be easier if you came with me?" Hayden asked.

"Not really. For starters, I hate male chauvinists, and that seems to be the whole of your pack. Secondly, I have to go help my devil of a sister do her homework." Valerie said, hiding the annoyance in her tone.

"Why the emphasis on sister?" Hayden asked.

"That's a story for another day." Valerie said, as she drew a pair of gloves from her backpack and wore it around her hand.

"Thank you, Valerie. When it works, I will make sure you get something from me." Hayden said.

"I already have what I want." Valerie said.

"And that is?"

"The answer. I will finally know whether my greatest experiment works or not."
