Chapter 18
Claudia shoved her phone back into her pocket, waiting for Hayden's arrival. She was filled with anticipation and tried to convince herself that it was the only way.
She paced along the grass and stretched her neck out, looking for signs of Hayden.
How far could she have gone? Claudia asked herself with a sigh. She was more anxious than usual for all she wanted was to get it over with.
And then she could pretend it never happened.
Her eyes focused on a pair of black, knee boots approaching her. Wearing them stood Isla, her fists balled up.
"I shouldn't have taken your word for it." Isla said, visibly angry.
"It's for the best, Isla." Claudia said.
"For whom?" Isla asked, gritting her teeth with every word.
"For the pack! She's the true heir. It's in our best interest!" Claudia exclaimed.
"Give me the ring!" Isla exclaimed, ready to unleash herself onto Claudia.
"I- I can't." she said.
"I see where your loyalty stands." Isla said, her eyelids half-closed as she tried to contain her rage.
Claudia rubbed the back of her head, not able to decide whom to side with. No matter what she did, she was going back on one of their deals.
I don't mind breaking Hayden's trust though, she thought as she tried to make up her mind.
As if to make everything worse, a voice reverberated in her head. She turned her head back only to see Hayden staring down at her.
"You're not going back on our deal, are you?" Hayden taunted, walking towards the both of them.
"I didn't think you'd play dirty." Isla said.
"You're not playing fair either." Hayden said.
"Maybe I'm not. Maybe that's simply because you don't deserve to be alpha." Isla said, not wanting to hold back anymore.
She already knows so it doesn't matter, Isla thought as she decided that she was going to let it all out just this once.
"You can step down now and I'll let you go easy." Hayden said.
"You're all bark and no bite." Isla said, releasing her fist from her tight grip as she looked Hayden straight in the eye.
"I think you mean howl." Hayden said.
"Now's not the time for your terrible jokes." Isla said.
"I'm serious. In case you don't recall, I have the upper hand." Hayden said.
She shifted her focus to the wolf inside of her, expecting the voice to talk to her again. To her surprise, there were no remarks.
No words of manipulation or discouragement. It was almost as if the voice was just a hallucination.
She hunched her back as thick, black fur began to replace her cardigan. She stood on all fours, preparing herself for the conversion.
Isla looked at her, realizing that she wouldn't stand a chance. She clutched her fist and swung it across Claudia's face. Taken aback, she stumbled back which created the distraction Isla needed.
She thwacked Claudia's knee, causing her to let go of the glimmering ring in her hand. Considering the fact that Hayden was in the middle of the transformation, Isla already had the advantage.
She kicked off from the ground, sprinting away from the headquarters as she tried to find alleys she hoped were too small for the wolf forming behind her.
A loud howl echoed in her ears, causing her to trip on a rock in front of her. The sound of legs running towards her increased and she couldn't help but look back.
Her hair stood on end at the sight of a six-foot big beast inching toward her feet with every second.
Before Isla could resolve what to do, she felt the sharp grass tingle in her skin. She felt heavy paws on her shoulder as she tried to turn around.
Isla furrowed her eyebrows in anger, knowing that there was nothing she could do.
I ruined everything, she thought as anger rose in her chest. She knew it wasn't entirely her fault but if she had convinced Claudia sooner, this wouldn't have happened.
"You are not getting it from me." Isla spoke through gritted teeth. The wolf lifted her foreleg and placed it on Isla's throat, daring her to make a move.
There was nowhere for her to go. She knew for a fact that Hayden wouldn't kill her but that didn't mean she wouldn't get hurt.
She let go of the ring as it rolled down her waist and sunk into the grass. Hayden immediately changed her focus to the ring and let go of Isla's throat.
She used her tongue to pick it up and balanced it between her teeth.
She gave one last glance to Isla who was still on the ground, not daring to make a move. With a low growl, Hayden walked away, leaving Isla all alone.

The sound of her phone buzzing gave Valerie a reason to get out trance she was in. She shook her head before leaving the room, her gaze still caught up on the book she discovered.
She walked down the stairs in silence, the covens whines and complaints no longer there to bother her.
The name that popped up on the caller ID excited her more than it should have. She brought her phone closer to her ear, a wide smile forming on her lips.
"I think it's time you fulfilled your end of the deal." a bitter voice spoke.
"A little more enthusiasm and I might help." Valerie said.
"Might? We made a deal!" the voice exclaimed.
"Calm down, Isla. Being worried is not a good look on you." Valerie said with a smile for she knew that Isla needed her again.
"I got rid of a whole coven for you." Isla stated.
"That was mostly me." Valerie said.
"I killed your mother. It's about time we made it even." Isla said.
"A kill for a kill?" Valerie asked.
"That's right. Hayden has lived more days than she should have." Isla said
"Fine, but you have to do something for me." Valerie said.
"I already did!" Isla exclaimed.
"I asked you to get rid of every one of them." Valerie said.
"What do you want?" Isla asked, knowing that there was no point in arguing.
"I need you to get Gwenyth to help me with something." Valerie said.
"Why would she listen to me after everything I did?" Isla asked.
"If you can't I can always ask Hayden." Valerie said.
"You are infuriating." Isla said and hung up. Valerie tossed her phone onto the velvet cushion beside her. If everything was to go according to her plan, she'd soon be invincible.
I won't even have to put my life on the line like Hayden did, she thought with pride. It pained her that she put all that effort into something faulty but it was better than risking everything.
She stroked her fingers on the wooden armrest as she imagined watching everything fall into place.
The clock was ticking and soon the time would come.
The time for my perfect victory.
