When you child is jealous of their new sibling

~ Zarkon ~

Some time after Zara was born, Gatrea noticed how you and Zarkon spent more time with Zara than they did with her. You and Zarkon were trying not to make her feel left out, but sometimes you both got distracted whenever Zara did something cute or needed something. Over the next few weeks you both noticed a slight change in Gatrea's behavior; she would act bratty whenever Zara was in the same room. You were a little worried about your oldest daughter, and so was Zarkon.

"Gatrea, can you please pick up Zara's pacifier?" Zarkon asked Gatrea as he sat on one of the couches in the living room, holding his and your two and a half month old daughter who dropped her pacifier.

"Get it yourself." Gatrea murmured angrily as she laid on the floor with her coloring book and crayons.

"Excuse me, young lady?" Zarkon asked, not liking Gatrea's tone.

"Whatever." Gatrea quietly muttered, rolling her eyes.

"Don't use that tone with me." Zarkon warned, trying not to startle Zara.

When you heard arguing coming from the living room, you were worried. By the tone Gatrea was using, you could tell that she was upset and possibly slightly distressed. You and Zarkon had been so busy with Zara that you both weren't able to spend as much time with Gatrea as you both used to.

"Is everything alright in here?" You asked when you walked into the living room, noticing how quiet Gatrea got when she saw you.

"Zara accidentally dropped her pacifier and I'm unable to get it because I'm trying to get her to fall asleep, and Gatrea refuses to help." Zarkon calmly told you, glancing down at Zara for a second.

"Gatrea?" You asked your oldest daughter, trying to get her attention.

"You and papa love Zara more than you love me." Gatrea muttered in a barely audible voice, feeling angrier than before.

"What was that?" You calmly queried, raising an eyebrow.

"I said that you and papa love Zara more than you love me." Gatrea told you in a sad tone as she looked up, her voice wavering as she spoke.

"Oh, Gatrea, we love you just as much as we love Zara." You said sympathetically as you walked over to your oldest child, kneeling down next to her.

"No you don't!" Gatrea said, letting out a sob as tears began running down her cheeks.

"Yes we do. It's okay to feel sad and jealous, but please don't think that your father and I don’t love you." You softly told Gatrea, feeling guilty for causing her to be sad.

Gatrea sat up and hugged you, burying her face against your side as she started crying. You gently rubbed her back in a soothing way, waiting for her to stop crying. Zarkon felt bad too; he never meant to make Gatrea feel bad. Thankfully, Zara had fallen asleep, which meant that he could put her in the bassinet that was next to the couch. After Gatrea stopped crying, you and Zarkon promised her that you both would spend some extra time with her so she wouldn't have to feel jealous anymore.

~ Alfor ~

As much as Lotarius loved his baby sister, sometimes he couldn't help but feel jealous of all the attention she was getting. You and Alfor were almost always spending time with her, Coran and Melenor always spent time with her when they visited, and even Allura thought that Fallara was the cutest baby she'd ever seen. Lotarius felt left out, and he was desperate for more attention. It wasn't that you and Alfor were neglecting him, because you both weren't, but to Lotarius, it felt like you both were. One evening during dinner, Lotarius refused to eat the food that was on his plate.

"Lotarius, eat your dinner before it gets cold." You gently reminded your son, noticing that his plate was still full.

"No." Lotarius mumbled in a grumpy tone, looking down at his lap.

"Why not?" You asked, hoping that his stomach wasn't upset or something.

"I don't wanna." Lotarius told you, not wanting to look up from his lap.

You looked at Alfor and saw that he had a worried look on his face. It wasn't like Lotarius to not want to eat dinner, which meant that something was going on. You had a feeling that he was jealous of Fallara, but you weren't one hundred percent sure.

"Lotarius, is something bothering you?" Alfor questioned in a worried tone, trying to get his and your son to look up.

"Yes there is." Lotarius answered, glancing up at his father.

"Do you want to talk about it?" You queried with curiosity.

"You and papa spend more time with Fallara than you do with me. It's not fair!" Lotarius complained as he finally looked up at you, his bottom lip sticking out a little.

"Now Lotarius, it's okay to feel jealous, but Fallara's just a baby; she needs a lot of attention. Your father and I have been trying to make a little extra time for you." You assured your son, feeling guilty that you didn't notice his jealousy sooner.

"Do you mean it? Will you and papa really spend more time with me?" Lotarius questioned, his voice wavering a little.

"Yes, I- We do." You reassured your son, reaching out with one hand and caressing the back of his head, something that usually soothed him.

"We love you, Lotarius; you're always going to be our little Prince." Alfor said softly, smiling at his son.

A few tears escaped Lotarius' eyes and slid down his cheeks, but he wiped them away with the backs of his hands. You and Alfor would have Coran and Melenor babysit Fallara the next day so that you both could spend some extra time with your son. With the promise of spending time with both of his parents, Lotarius started eating his dinner, not wanting it to get too cold. You and Alfor were happy to see your son's mood improve so that he would eat his dinner. You both would have to do some planning later that night so that the two of you could figure out the best way to spend the next day with Lotarius.

~ Blaytz ~

A few weeks after Blaze and Lyra were born, you and Blaytz realized just how busy you both would be while taking care of two babies. You both were so busy that Iris felt left out, and that made her sad and jealous. You and Blaytz noticed how quiet Iris had been as of late, but neither of you thought much of it until one day while you both were passing by her bedroom after putting Lyra and Blaze in their cribs for their naps, hearing your daughter sobbing loudly.

"Blaytz." You whispered to your husband when you both stopped walking, looking up at him.

"I know, cutie. I feel bad, to." Blaytz responded, keeping his voice low; he felt guilty for not spending as much time with Iris as he used to.

It wasn't like you and Blaytz completely ignored Iris, far from it, but neither of you had very much one on one time to spend with her, either. Neither of you wanted Iris to become depressed and resent both of you and her new siblings. After a few short moments, you and Blaytz opened her bedroom door and walked in, finding her crying on her bed.

"Hey, little cutie. What's wrong?" Blaytz softly asked as the two of you walked across the room and knelt down next to Iris' bed.

"You and mommy don't love me anymore." Iris mumbled as she hugged her knees against her chest, her voice barely audible.

"What?" You queried in a worried tone, unsure if you heard her correctly or not.

"You and daddy don't love me anymore." Iris said a little louder, not looking at either you or Blaytz.

"What gave you that idea?" Blaytz asked Iris with curiosity, a frown making its way onto his face.

"Because you and mommy spend almost all of your time with the new babies." Iris answered, still not looking at you and Blaytz.

Blaytz looked at you and you looked at him; Iris was obviously jealous of Blaze and Lyra, but also a little depressed after not getting enough attention from you and her father. Both Blaytz and your hearts ached when she started crying again, fat tears running down her face.

"I- I just want to spend time with you and mommy again, like we used to when it was just the three of us." Iris said after a few moments, glancing up at you and Blaytz, her feelers draped down in front of her face.

"I know, sunshine, but Lyra and Blaze need a lot of attention. We never meant to make you feel so sad." You told your daughter in a gentle tone, reaching forward and soothingly rubbing her back.

"If you would like, Auntie Urlu could babysit Blaze and Lyra so that you, mommy and me can spend the day together. Would you like that?" Blaytz asked Iris softly, wanting nothing more than to see his oldest little girl happy again.

"Uh huh." Iris quietly answered, sniffling as she tried to stop crying.

You gave Iris a reassuring smile, wanting to help her not feel so sad and jealous. Iris sniffled again before she got up on her knees, moving to the edge of the bed so that she could try to hug you and her father at the same time. You and Blaytz gently hugged your oldest daughter, happy that she stopped crying. Jealousy was common when new babies were introduced to the family, so you and Blaytz were going to set aside some extra time to spend with Iris. Taking care of two new babies was hard and time consuming, but eventually Iris would get used to sharing you and Blaytz with Lyra and Blaze.

~ Gyrgan ~

It wasn't that Adu hated Gemma, but he didn't like that she was getting more attention than he was. Whenever Gemma was in the same room as you and Gyrgan, you both would mostly pay attention to her. When she was taking a nap, you and Gyrgan would spend time with Adu, albeit not as long as he wanted. One evening while the four of you were in the living room, you and Gyrgan were happily talking to each other while sitting on the couch. Adu was sitting on the floor, watching tv while Gemma was playing on the floor with one of his old baby toys.

Adu remembered how much fun he used to have with the toy, so he decided that he wanted to have it so that she couldn't. He looked up at you and Gyrgan, making sure that you both were busy before crawling over to an unsuspecting Gemma. Gemma was four months old, so she still didn't do too much.

"Mine!" Adu said angrily as he forcefully took the toy from Gemma, glaring at her.

As soon as the toy was ripped out of Gemma's hands she started crying loudly, sad that the toy was taken from her. Adu quickly went back to where he was sitting before, hugging the toy against his chest. You and Gyrgan rushed over to Gemma as soon as she started wailing, both of you knowing what happened.

"Adu, don't make your sister cry and don't take her toys." You firmly scolded Adu while Gyrgan picked Gemma up, carefully cradling her against his chest.

"But it's my toy!" Adu argued, looking up at you as you knelt in front of him.

"It used to be your toy until you didn't play with it anymore. I know that you're not interested in playing with it anymore, so why did you take it?" You questioned in a firm tone, not happy with your son at the moment.

"Because… Because I don't want Gemma to have it!" Adu answered, his bottom lip quivering as he started to cry.

You were a little surprised that Adu would go as far as taking a toy from Gemma just because he was jealous of her. Meanwhile, Gyrgan had finally succeeded in calming Gemma down after a few moments.

"Adu, it's not nice to take things from your younger sister. I know that you're jealous, but your father and I are trying our best to spend time with you when Gemma's taking her nap. It's alright to feel jealous, but you can't have dessert tomorrow night after dinner." You told Adu in a less firm tone, not wanting to make the situation worse.

Adu sniffled and nodded his head, feeling guilty for taking the toy from his baby sister. You gave your son a hug, wanting him to feel loved. After a few minutes, Adu gave the toy back to Gemma and apologized to her. You and Gyrgan felt bad for not spending as much time with Adu, so you both promised him that the three of you would spend time together while Gemma stayed with the nanny for the next day. Adjusting to having a younger sibling was harder for Adu than you and Gyrgan could have imagined, but you both knew that someday, Adu and Gemma would be inseparable.

~ Trigel ~

It wasn't long after Veldar was born that Astrid realized how much she was going to have to share you and Trigel with him. You and Trigel still spent some time with Astrid, but more often than not she felt left out. Astrid was only a little jealous, but she sometimes really disliked having a baby brother. One morning during breakfast,  Trigel noticed how Astrid was sulking instead of eating. You noticed too, which worried you; it wasn't like Astrid to sulk.

"Is something wrong, Astrid?" Trigel asked Astrid in a calm voice, gaining her daughter's attention.

"I'm not hungry." Astrid replied in a monotone voice, staring down at her breakfast.

"Are you feeling alright? Do you have an upset stomach?" Trigel queried in a concerned tone.

Astrid didn't answer, but started playing with her cereal with her spoon instead of saying anything. You and Trigel exchanged a worried look, both of you knowing that your daughter was sad. You already knew that she was a little jealous of Veldar, and you and Trigel were trying your best to spend as much time with her as possible, but you knew that jealousy was unavoidable.

"Why do you and mama love Veldar more than you love me?" Astrid asked Trigel, her voice wavering slightly as he looked up at her mommy.

"Oh, butterfly, your mama and I love you just as much as we love Veldar. We know that you're sad that we can't spend all of our time with you, but it'll get easier for you to share us, just give it time." Trigel told Astrid softly, smiling at her and your daughter.

"Your mother is right; we both still love you very much and you'll get used to sharing us as time goes by. We promise." You reassured Astrid, smiling at her while you held Veldar.

"Okay." Astrid said, looking at you and smiling a little before turning her attention to her breakfast; she knew that you and Trigel were trying your best to spend time with her.

You and Trigel looked at each other after Astrid started eating her breakfast, happy that she wasn't sulking anymore. The two of you didn't want her to be jealous and sad because you both were so busy with her baby brother. Veldar was only one month old, so it was only natural that he needed a lot of care and attention. You and Trigel were going to be better at making a point every day to spend a little extra time with your daughter so that she wouldn't feel left out. Astrid was happier knowing that you and Trigel still loved her; all she needed was a little reassurance.
