Ch. 9: Gary NOT Ash

Misty let a loud sigh as she flopped into her bed. She kicked her feet in the air as she thought deeply about her day.

Ash knew the café very well so he also knew the best spots. He led Misty inside to a sofa in the corner, and she could already see him and Gary there drinking café and taking about their manly guys' topics.

"Do you like the spot?"

"Yes, I do."

Ash smiled. He sat beside the redhead and lifted his hand up, calling for the waiter. This later came up to them instantly.

"Ash! Good to see you. Where is Gary? I see you came with wifey this time."

Misty kept running her hand through her hair, faking not having heard him. Ash chuckled. "Get us the menus and quit the bad jokes."

"Fine! I'm sorry. I forgot you had a redhead sister."

"What a jerk." Ash mumbled to himself as the waiter walked away. He looked at Misty. "People can't get the friendship concept through their heads."

If Ash has said that days ago, Misty would have gotten really angry. Today, she got angry too, but for other reasons. She wasn't sure why she was so mad that Ash friendzoned her—but wait, he also implied she was his friend, and Misty was barely Ash's friend.

Honestly, Misty wasn't exactly sure what Ash was to her. But she was sure of one thing: she wasn't okay with being his friend. What did she exactly want? She wasn't sure. No, wait, she wasn't ready yet to admit what she was waiting from Ash exactly. Her emotions and feelings were so mixed up and Ash looked so handsome and smelled like citrus today she was completely lost.

And suddenly, she thinks the fact that he was an Orange Archipelago native is really making him sexy (his mom is from Pallet town. It's like sweet and rough. Just perfect) His skin was sunkissed and you could mistake him for a sexy cocktail bar waiter in a small island with his filled out body. What is this bullsh*t Misty will never know.

Oh, of course, Ash had to ruin Misty's fantasies. Life was unfair, after all.

"I think I will take some lemon crème pastry." Misty brushed her hair behind her ear and asked Ash, "What are you taking?"

"Oh, just some coffee." She usually sees Ash drinking café crème at school.

"That's all?"

He smiled weakly. "I'm on a diet, that's why."

End of fantasies.

Misty thought it'd be a loss if he loses all what she's been starting to consider as sexiness, but hey, it wasn't her body. Misty goes on diets too when she feels like she has to.

... but it will probably take her one hundred pounds of chocolate ice cream to get over the fact that she was the one who called him fatso.

Anyway, back to the little 'date'.

"Oh, really?"

"It should be done now and then."

Misty nodded slowly and licked her lips. "Honestly, I don't think you need to do that."

"I get that from everyone."

"I'm not-"

"It's fine, I get it. Plus, I feel better this way. I think of it like a lifestyle."

"Oh, if you say so." Misty felt something crumble down inside her.

Eric was back and took their orders. Misty thought Ash would change his mind but he still ordered the espresso only. It was really weird to see the guy who keeps eating in class for two hours straight say he was considering a diet like a lifestyle.

Misty shrugged off the thought and tried to start a classic conversation between two classmates working on a project. "Why did you skip the two previous days?"

"Just like that." Ash shrugged.

"I'm not giving you a lecture or anything but it's not really good..."

"Yeah, I know, but the weekend wasn't enough."

She giggled. He smiled at her reaction. The waiter came back and placed the coffee in front of Ash, and the lemon pastry and hot chocolate in front of Misty.

Ash's phone started to vibrate on the table right when he took the first sip of his espresso (Misty noted he didn't add the sugar). It flashed the name Bridget.

Ash blinked and answered the call. "Hi Bree."

"Uhm, what's going on?"

Misty watched him closely.

"No, I'm not home. Why?"

"Bridget, are you serious?" Ash let a chuckle. He suddenly got up. "Please tell me she missed the count and she isn't going to give birth on her eight month."

Misty's eyes shot wide. Reese was giving birth?

"You know it doesn't matter as long as it's not the eighth! Quit nagging and tell me where you are now." He exchanged a look with Misty. This latter got up. "Okay. Are mom and dad with you?"

"It's fine. They'll answer later. It's fine." Ash gestured for Misty to collect her things. "No, I'm with Misty."

He pulled away the phone and blinked. "Wow, she hung up." Ash laughed. "The girls are freaking out because Reese is in labor and no one else is answering."

"And you're laughing!"

"Come on! All pregnant women go through labor." Ash collected his stuff as well. "Honestly, I think it's really funny that none of the parents are answering."

"Shouldn't you leave quickly?"

"You too. Come on." Ash placed some bills on the table and held Misty by the hand, rushing out of the café quickly.

So practically, their little date turned into a visit to the clinic. When Ash and Misty got there, Reese was sitting down on her bed, slightly sweaty but still pretty and cheerful like Misty remembers her to be. She was soon going to give birth, but she wasn't all screaming and shouting like the stuff on the TV. Bridget and Lana were still trying to call Reese's husband, Seth.

"Are you okay?" Ash asked Reese. She nodded. "I guess. It hurts but I guess I'll be fine."

Misty watched her in amazement. She couldn't believe she could still look this pretty when she was only a few minutes away from getting a human being out of her body.

"Look at the bright side. Now you'll know if it's a girl or a boy."

Misty put her hand on her forehead. "Ash! Shut up!"

"It's true!"

Reese laughed a bit. "I swear I'm in pain but I can't help but laugh."

"See?"

A doctor suddenly got inside with two nurses. "Mrs. Martinez? Let's go."

"Reese!" Lana butted in suddenly. "Seth answered! He was in a reunion! He's coming right now!"

"Okay, good." It was clear on her that she was only fighting back the pain. The two nurses helped her get up and they left the room.

"Reese? Are you okay? Do you want us to get inside with you?"

"I'll be fine, I'll be fine." Reese cleared her throat. Everyone got outside and she turned around right before she was about to get in the operations' room. "Don't let Seth get in when he comes, okay? It's not worth it."

"Well, we'll try..."

Ash and Misty were exchanging looks. They felt like this adult world was way too foreign to them.

"Come on Misty. I'll take you home." Ash told her only a few minutes after Reese got inside. The redhead shrugged. "It's fine. I can stay."

"She likes Reese!" Bridget said from her spot and smiled. "Right?"

Misty smiled weakly. "You can say that."

Ash was a little confused but he chose to drop the subject. He caught sight of Seth dressed in a black suit rushing through the hallway. He was in the head of a hotel's chain owned previously by his father. Now it was clear for Misty why Reese had the rich allure.

"Reese said—hey! What the-"

"Hey!" Lana called out at him. "Seth! Reese said don't get in!" Seth turned around to look at her. He got inside the operations' room without spelling a word.

"What's his problem?" Misty blinked.

"Seth is a problem himself." Ash stuffed his phone in his pocket and asked Misty, "Maybe we can go finish our pause-café in the cafeteria? I'm sure Reese won't give birth instantly."

They didn't talk much when they went to the cafeteria in the clinic, but it felt like they've known each other for years, and Ash was so easygoing with her. It's like she never called him names and he never did; it's like they never got in a fight, and it's like Misty has never seen someone as cute and handsome as Ash Ketchum.

It was clear.

Misty developed a crush on Ash.

Seth's mother came only a few minutes before Reese was taken out. Delia showed up on her own as well since Joseph was out of Kanto, and Seth's father was the last to show up. Reese was already on her bed, her baby boy (Seth wanted a boy; he got a boy. End of discussion. It didn't matter if others wanted a girl) was on the crib, and Lana and Bridget were cooing over the newborn nonstop.

Misty was thrilled too. She's never seen a newborn before as she's the youngest.

"Can I carry him?" She asked in a very low voice when Reese finally sat up and taken her son from the crib. Seth stood on the other side of the bed. The girls were gone as well as the parents.

"Of course. Here." Reese smiled genuinely as she handed Misty the newborn. The redhead couldn't help by smile and let an 'oooh'. He was so cute and adorable. His eyes were still closed. He felt so small. It's like he could break into pieces if she tightens her grip about him.

"Aw, his little hands." Misty brushed her finger against his hands and then his cheek. "He's so cute. I can't get over it."

Reese chuckled slightly. Misty looked up. "What are you going to name him?"

"The deal was that if we get a girl, I name her, and if we get a boy, Seth names him, so...." Reese smiled and exchanged a look with Seth.

"Today is really, really, really weird." Misty chuckled. She gave Reese her baby boy back very gently. "From the filming... to this."

"Did my son interrupt something?" Seth let a small laugh.

Misty leaned over and brushed her finger against his cheek and smiled. "You can say that."

"Bad boy, interrupting your uncle's date. How do you feel now, huh?" Reese planted a kiss on his forehead. She looked at Misty. "He's sorry."

Misty chuckled. She said, "What do you think of the name Tyler? My parents were planning on naming the first boy they get Tyler, but they never got one."

Reese and Seth looked at each other. Misty said, "If you use my name, you'll have to let me see him every day!"

"Oh, Misty, of course you can see him. And I like the name." Reese turned to Seth. "What do you think?"

"I like it too."

"It's settled then!"

Misty gasped. "Already?"

Reese giggled. "I really like the sound of it!" She kissed her son on the forehead. "Tyler Seth Martinez, hum?"

"And my name suits him as a middle name too."

Misty was really flattered. "Wow, thank you!"

"Oh, but don't forget," Reese began and winked at her. "You can no longer stay a stranger to the family now! Unless you want us to tell our son that a complete stranger named him and not his uncle's wife."

The more Reese's word replayed in her head, the redder Misty's face got. It was impossible not to blush at the thought. Impossible.

At Reese's comment, Misty excused herself and fled to look for Ash so he can drive her home. They didn't talk much on the road. Ash made the same comment about this day getting weirder, but Misty didn't want to take the conversation any further because it could only lead her to having Reese's words replayed-

"AAAARGH!" Misty shouted loudly and sat on her bed. "I should stop thinking about it. I should stop thinking about it."

Misty let a sigh. She grabbed her pillow and rested her head on it. Her cheeks were slightly pink and her heart was beating fast.

She couldn't. This was really bad. She just couldn't.

Misty quickly grabbed her phone. She dialed a familiar number and made a call.

Oh, hi Misty! What's up?

"I like you."

Huh?

Misty gulped. "I like you, Gary."
