CHAPTER 11
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
-Albert Einstein
Four O'clock, Saturday, I laid in bed with a novel and warm, delicious French Vanilla. With the days getting closer, I just wanted to stay in bed all day and avoid life. But with Zoey's constant phone calling and texts, I wanted the earth to swallow me whole. Knowing she'd bother me about going to the party, I ignored her completely.
'Call me back you hoe.'
'Answer your damn phone bitch.'
I could literally feel her love radiating off these messages.
'We are so over.'
'I want you to come to this party Scarlett.'
And I want a pair of flashy pants, but am I complaining?
I flopped on to my bed and went back to re-reading the Percy Jackson series, grabbing my mug of French Vanilla. After ten minutes, my phone rang again, how stubborn is this girl? I debated even reaching for my phone, then grabbed it just to confirm it's Zoey.
But it was an unknown caller.
"Hello?"
"Hey Sunshine." A low voice answered.
"Uh-who is this?" I ask curiously and heard the caller gasp.
"You're telling me you've forgotten me already? You literally confessed your love to me the other day." I almost choked on my drink.
"Evans? How in the hell did you get my number?"
"I have my ways Dev, I am jus-"
"Was it Zoey?"
There was a pause before he replied. "Yes, it was Zoey. Stop dilly-dallying Dev, we have business to speak of."
"Uh-huh. I'm ending this call."
"Great, to get ready, I know. I'm picking you up at 7.45 sharp then!"
"Yeah well you can't because you don't know my address, so hah!"
"Really Dev? I've dropped you home before and Zoey texted me your address yesterday."
"God, she is the worst best friend ever." I groaned.
I heard chuckling, "see you then, Sunshine." And then the line went dead.
♡♡♡
At six, I had a midlife crisis. If Evans was to come and pick me up, I wasn't ready, not emotionally, not physically, and not definitely not mentally. Let's say I was to go to this bonfire, I would have to spend hours to even look human. I haven't spent more than five minutes on my appearance since last year.
Yep. I couldn't do it.
I called Zoey. She picked up instantly.
"You traitorous nincompoop!" Zoey screeched.
"Hello to you too. Before you go on, I can't go to the party because I won't be able to get ready and that means I won't be able to show up looking like a hobo. Think about you're rep-" The line went dead.
Sigh. I bet she's given up on me, well at least I don't have to go anymore.
As I went back to being comfortable, my room door flew open and in barged Zoey with a wild look in her eyes.
I jumped in fright. "Oh my God, Zoey! You scared the shit out of me!"
"How in the hell did you get here so quickly? Did you teleport?" She narrowed her eyes at me, stomped over to my closet, and started rummaging through my clothes. "Zoey, I know you're feeling-" She flung a dress towards the bed and I dodged it.
"-Angry." I calmly try to talk to her, I've only seen her like this once before when Sam had forgotten Zoey's birthday and flirted with another girl on the same day "I just wanted to say-"
"YOU." She turned around angrily with her finger pointed at me. Her face was livid with anger. "ZIP IT." She motioned her hand pulling an imaginary zipper over her lips.
She walked over to the clothes she threw out on the bed and arranged two outfits, from the top down to the shoes. She put her hands on her hips, her face flashed a second of satisfaction, then her eyebrows furrowed again. She tapped her chin then chose one of outfits and threw the dress at me.
"Try it out." At this point I didn't even argue, I picked up the dress and went to change.
After Zoey agreed to cute cream coloured lace dress, she gave me a black jacket, faux diamond stud earrings and long black boots to complete the look. She grabbed my face, put me in to a chair and started doing my makeup. After a lot of irking and hissing, my makeup was done.
I looked at myself and I looked beautiful, I looked like me but a more hot and maintained version of me. I didn't look tired or lifeless, my makeup wasn't too heavy, I had light blush on, a light shade of pink lipstick and light smokey eye shadow. The best part was my eyeliner which was so symmetrical and perfect, making my hazel eyes pop, Zoey's a freaking magician.
My dirty blonde hair's now curled loosely, creating long waves. I looked instagram worthy, if I had it.
Zoey crossed her arms and smiled proudly, her chin tilted upwards.
"NOW, you have no excuses. You're ready for the party." She said. Then walked out and without turning back she yelled, "see you there bitch."
♡♡♡
Evans' car pulled up outside precisely at 7.44, and he texted me at precisely 7.45.
'I'm outside.'
Exactly 25 seconds later, the doorbell rang. Grabbing my jacket and phone, I rushed downstairs and swung open the door.
And holy cheesecakes, it was a sight to see. Evans was wearing a plain white t-shirt with a black leather jacket on top and dark faded jeans. He had his hands in his pockets and his hair was effortlessly messy, standing on the porch of yours truly was tall, dark and handsome.
"Like what you see, Dev?" He smirked.
I felt the blush creep up, but answered casually, "No, not really." Evans looked at me, his face unreadable.
"Well unlike some people, I can answer honestly. I definitely like what I see." Evans eyes grazed over my legs and winked. And now I could feel myself blushing hard.
"Shut up you perverted toad." Why was I going with this guy again?
"Shall we go?" He asked and I nodded in reply, pulling the door behind me, we walked to his car. He opened the door up and allowed me to take my seat, then walked over and sat in the driver's seat.
As we got closer to the beach, I heard the faint hum of the song playing at the bonfire. It seemed busy too, there were a lot of people walking around, drinking, partying. I suddenly felt anxious, bugs eating up the lower part of my stomach.
Evans must've noticed my discomfort because he looked over to me and said, "don't worry Scarlett, it's just a bonfire. I'll be- we'll be with you the whole time."
I looked at him and in to his green eyes, and something about him made the bugs slow down.
I nodded, "I'm fine, let's go." He looks at me one last time before exiting the car.
We walk out and towards the entrance logs of the bonfire and I could feel people staring at me, maybe at us. Leaning against a table, we see Sam drinking a bottle of beer. Evans walks up to him and grabs the beer out of his hand.
"Bro, what the fu-" He looks up annoyed, then sees us and breaks in to a goofy smile. "Alex, ma man what iz up? Woah Scarlett, you look amazeballs." Sam said slurring slightly.
"You look ... happy." Evans said raising his eyebrows. "Where's Zoey?"
"Right here." Zoey came up to us holding a waterbottle in her hand, I looked at her and raised my eyebrows in question. "Some asshat called Sam a weird geek and challenged him to drink. And this idiot chugged down two or three bottles of beer too fast."
"Zoey let's go swimming with the dolphins," Sam said in a dreamy voice.
I turned to look at Evans, but he was talking to a blonde haired girl a few steps away. "Let's go find Aquaman."
"Let's not, Sam." Zoey said, rolling her eyes. "I did not plan on babysitting this giant moose."
"Let's dance!" Sam exclaimed. "Cmon guys don't be party poopers!"
"How about you two go ahead, I'll be fine. I have Evans." I pointed to where he was, but the girl and him were gone. I frowned, feeling a little anger and fire burning in my stomach. Jealousy? Why would I be jealous? He could do whatever he wants, we're barely friends. "Or not. But I'm okay!"
"Sorry Scarlett, we wont be long, you'll be okay right?"
"Yeah, totally fine." She looked at me unsure. "Go! Besides I've got Evans with me... as soon as I find him." I urge her, pushing her towards Sam who was already off to the dance floor. I was sort of pissed she'd left me ten minutes in to this beach party, when she promised we'd stick together if I came. But Zoey and Sam looked really cute on the dance floor, and she was only trying to get me to have some fun.
I tear my eyes away from a drunk Sam and a laughing Zoey and struggled through the excited crowd, making my way to the bar. Looking around I couldn't spot Evans anywhere, I was about to walk away when suddenly I felt wet liquid fall on my left arm and chest.
I gasped and looked up to the guy responsible for soaking me, who was smiling smugly.
"Oops. Oh lookie, it's Scarlett Devereaux, come out of hiding." Eric said, shrugging.
"Watch where your going dickhead." I say through my gritted teeth. I ran my hand over the spill, failing to get the drink off.
"Guess you should wash the stain off whore, oh wait it's permanent." Eric suggested, the drunk girl beside him giggled. I gave him my best death glare and stalked off to find a bathroom. The music was starting to give me a headache and my anxiety kept building up, I felt like I would explode soon. Some random girl pointed to a large building with stalls and a resting room when I asked her for help, and I went in.
Rubbing some tissues over the spill, I tried my best to get it dry but ended up frustrating myself even more. Taking out my phone, I dialled Evans' number trying to get a hold of him, Zoey already ditched me, I've had a run in with the asshole and I'm fricking bored. Yep, my expirience of a party is complete. It rang continuously until I gave up and texted Evans where I was and to take me home.
The bathroom doorknob twisted, and I looked up to see who'd walked in. It was him, and a dark fear settled in.
"What're you doing? Get out!" I demanded, my heart starting pounding faster.
"Don't worry princess, just came here to finish what was left undone." Eric smiled creepily, locking the door behind him he walked towards me.
"You're a fucking psycho Eric, leave or I'll scream." Did he follow me? I tried to sound strong, fearless, but my voice broke. I screamed in my mind to wake myself up from this nightmare. My sleep terrorized me many times, but I'd wake up. I'd always wake up.
"I'm not a psycho Scarlett, but you're something I want. And I get what I want." He drawled on, a crazy look in his eyes, a determined look. He walked closer to me, and I felt myself trapped. My throat closed up in horror, why wasn't I waking up.
Wake up. Wake up. Wake up.
He put a hand on my shoulder, and I felt a scream escape my throat. I pushed him back and he stumbled backwards, but he just came back angry. And pushed me against the wall, I felt pain shoot through my back from a metal bar behind me. And as the pain and fear coursed through me and I knew.
This isn't a nightmare.
