Chapter 16: Never Underestimate Humanity
(Your POV)
The next day was pretty normal, with all of us going back to school because we had no idea where Kurumi was. However, we did have an advantage, she wants me, so she'll have to come to us. So that leads to me, Tohka, and Gonta walking down the halls on our own. Everyone else was doing things across the school with the exception being Yoshino, Kotori, and Reine, who remained on the airship to avoid the crossfire. I insisted that everyone aside from Kiibo stay on the airship with them, since Kiibo can be uploaded to a computer and rebuilt if he 'dies again", but everyone else insisted on coming with me.
"Is (Y/N) worried?" Gonta asked curiously, causing Tohka to look at my face closely while I nodded. "Don't worry, Gonta swears to protect both (Y/N) and Tohka!"
Almost right after he said that, the sky turned red and everyone around us began collapsing. My companions were no exception, Tohka almost fell, but I managed to catch her. As for Gonta, he was kneeling, trying his best to stand back up. I was confused, for I was the only person unaffected by this sudden development.
"(Y/N), this has gotta be Kurumi!" Kaito's voice could be heard in my earpiece, but I didn't want to leave my two companions. "Does anyone see her?"
"I see her on the rooftop." Maki's voice was now audible, which makes sense because she was across the street, with a sniper rifle aimed at our school to help us deal with Kurumi. "(Y/N), you're gonna have to deactivate this little spell."
"What about Tohka and Gonta?" I asked, but Tohka managed to catch me off guard by placing a firm grip on me.
"(Y/N), don't worry about me, you need to save Kurumi as soon as possible." Tohka encouraged me, usually it's the other way around. "Without you, I would have ended up like her, so you have to save her."
"Will do that." I placed a Tohka leaned up against the nearest wall before letting go. "I promise I'll save her."
With that said, I started running towards the rooftop of the building, checking behind my back to see Tohka was sitting with her back against the wall. Maki would have killed Kurumi, but she's a fallback plan because we're trying not to kill any spirits. Plus I'm not sure if the spell over the school reached her as well. Anyways, I turned Amaterasu into Sun Painter Amaterasu just as I opened the door to the roof, revealing Kurumi standing there.
"Look here Kurumi, I'm not gonna waste any BS with you." I was impatient to take care of this spell, so I raised my paintbrush to the sky and wrote '除' above me, causing the spell to disappear. "I'm gonna save you from your fate, whether you like it or not."
"You're pretty naive, for someone holding a relic that was made to slay a god." Kurumi gestures to Sun Painter Amaterasu, how does she know about my paintbrush? "Still, you're free to try and seal my power, if-"
Without a moment of hesitation, I suddenly appeared directly in front of Kurumi before writing '盗' over Kurumi's clock eye. Kurumi was left in shock, causing me to smile and reveal more kanji letters on my arm. There were six '速' symbols, increasing my speed to the point where I can not only keep up, but surpass. However, to my horror, a hand appeared behind Kurumi. The hand plunged itself through Kurumi's chest, killing her in a moment before the darkness of her shadow consumed her. The source of the hand was another Kurumi, so now it all made sense.
"So you basically clone yourself, not sure how that ties in with the clock/Victorian aesthetic you're pulling," I commented whilst setting my Paintbrush into a defensive stance. "By the way, am I talking to the real Kurumi or just a clone?"
"My my, you catch on pretty quick, but not quick enough." Kurumi giggled as hands similar to the ones from yesterday appeared from my shadow, but they were quickly covered in black paint. "Impressive, it appears I'll have to take care of you personally."
"(Y/N), she's scared of you." Reine informed me, why the hell id Kurumi scared of me, I'm just a guy who's really fucking good at painting and she's the person who can be considered a goddess. "Use that to your advantage."
"Kurumi, you're living a life of killing innocent civilians, your actions are bound to catch up to you eventually." I held my spare hand out to her. "I'm giving you a chance to help yourself not only survive the consequences, but also a second chance."
"Don't try to force your ideals onto me." Kurumi sounded mad, but I didn't care, she may be stronger than me, and smarter, but there's one thing I know I'm better at than her.
I don't fight alone.
"Now!"
From behind Kurumi, a gunshot could be heard, but Kurumi managed to catch the bullet with a bored expression. Shortly after catching the bullet, Kurumi dodges a slash from what appeared to be an energy sword. The person holding the blade was my sister, Mana, and the gunshot was from Moriko holding a sniper rifle atop the tower that was on the school's roof. Mana was kneed in the stomach by Kurumi in an instant, while Moriko was shot by a flintlock pistol Kurumi was holding. Despite the two wearing some advanced AST tech, their injuries were severe. Mana coughed up blood and fell to the ground whilst Moriko grabbed onto her shoulder, where the bullet landed.
"Mana, Moriko!" My plan fell apart, so I rushed over to Mana's side to attempt to protect her should Kurumi try anything else, but Moriko was starting to lose her footing at the tower.
"You three really think you could stand up against me?" Kurumi looked down at my sister and cousin in pity as she aimed her pistol at Mana and I. "Up till now, Mana and Moriko have been fighting clones of me, now you're dealing with the real me."
Before Kurumi could fire at us, a large object suddenly tackled Kurumi into the nearest wall. That object was none other than Gonta, and the force managed to shock Kurumi enough to make her let go of the pistol. Without a moment of hesitation, Gonta rushed over to the tower and caught Moriko before she could fall. In all honesty, it looked like something out of a romance novel.
"Is everyone okay?" Gonta asked, slightly panicking as Kurumi started to get out of the wall. "Gonta will carry Moriko to a Doctor, (Y/N) carry Mana!"
"Aye sir!"
I picked up Mana like a soldier carrying his comrade and followed Gonta, who was carrying Moriko like a princess. I followed the bug expert through the door that led to the stairway, allowing us to enter the school. We both ran down the stairs, trying our best not to fall off. My stomach dropped when I heard Kurumi enter the school building close behind us. We still didn't stop running, no matter what, we reached the same floor as the medical room and stayed moving. Surprisingly, there was no one on this floor, they must have evacuated. We keep on running until we heard Kurumi run into something, so we turned around and noticed that Kurumi was kicking against an invisible barrier.
"It appears Kurumi has fallen for my little trap." Korekiyo walked out of a closed locker beside us whilst Angie hopped out of the one on the opposite side of him. "You see, talismans can be used for many things, including keeping spirits at bay in some cases. So I had Angie here paint some and I placed them right here, so good luck harming anyone from in there."
"You're forgetting I can just use my powers to get me out of here, or I can just go back the way I came." Kurumi reminded Korekiyo, but Angie and him merely laughed, and Korekiyo's laugh is mildly unsettling.
"Atua wishes you luck with that." Angie forms a prayer formation with her hands. "Kaito placed a talisman on the floor above us, Kaede is putting one on the ceiling below us, and Kokichi's group is putting more down behind you!"
"Huh?!" Kurumi turned around and saw Kokichi, now wearing a hat and cloak, standing behind a group of people wearing clown masks, setting down talisman on the ground. "You murderers planned this didn't you?"
"Yup!" Kokichi placed his hands behind his head and smiled childishly. "You're so used to being above humans that you ignored us and only focused on (Y/N)! Now you're basically at our mercy. Never underestimate humanity!"
"Well jokes on you too, I'm not alone." Kurumi snickered, followed by clones of her coming in from the windows, but the ones on our side were quickly killed by a metal ball going through them while the other ones were killed with gunfire.
"You know, humans can be a lot more terrifying than any spirits." Ryoma picked up the metal ball from the ground and showed off his tennis racket. "We can turn even mundane objects into weapons of mass destruction."
"That's the first time I've seen someone kill with a metal tennis ball." Maki walked to Kokichi's side with an uzi in one hand and a knife in the other. "For the record, admitting you were the real thing earlier just made your entire plan fall apart. If we didn't know, then we wouldn't have set up this trap because we might have caught just a clone."
"Now comes the part where we have to seal her power." Korekiyo turned his attention to me. "Keep in mind she can still fight in that space, but it's limited, so she can't use her guns."
A single bullet sped by.
"Okay maybe she can shoot us." Korekiyo was now sweating nervously, but was trying to keep his cool. "However, that doesn't mean we can't seal her right now."
"You can go ahead and try but my clones are coming here right now, so you're on a time limit." Kurumi bluffs, but she isn't wrong.
Maki rushed towards Kurumi to attempt to restrain her, but the moment Maki entered the talisman area, Kurumi dashed towards her and kicked her in the head. Luckily, Ryoma managed to use his metallic tennis ball to knock Kurumi off balance, allowing Maki to attempt to stab her. Maki managed to stab Kurumi's stomach but then Kurumi raised her flintlock to her own head. She muttered something before pulling the trigger, somehow healing the stab wound on the spot. Seeing this, Kokichi ordered the red haired clown, who was named 1 for some reason, to get Maki out of there.
"Where the hell are the others?" Korekiyo asked, but then we heard the sound of yelling.
"GET PUFFED HUFFLEFUCKS!" We turned around to see Miu, standing at the end of the hallway with Kiibo and a large machine next to her.
Kiibo aimed his arm cannon at Kurumi for a moment before firing it, but instead of plasma, a single dart came out of it. Kurumi didn't catch it and let it hit her as a show of power, but when she tried to remove it, it couldn't come out. The dart was planted in her skin and even she couldn't remove it. I realized that the machine was from a video game Miu liked to play, and the barrel of the 'gun' began spinning before bullets came out of it, followed shortly by rockets. Kurumi merely scoffed and attempted to dodge these projectiles, but she somehow managed to get shot anyway. The dart that was stuck to her skin also began beeping whilst flashing red.
"What, you thought this was just a glorified bunch of scrap?" Miu asked loudly as we all watched as every bullet and rocket landed on Kurumi, but none of it actually managed to kill her. "What kind of idiot whore do you take me for?! I'm the greatest inventor of all time, I made this baby to home in on anything that the dart planted itself in!"
"Aren't we trying to NOT kill her?" Ryoma asked in slight disbelief while picking up another steel ball from his tennis bag. "I was deliberately aiming my shots at her limbs to avoid killing her."
"If we don't take her seriously, this small chested bitch is gonna kill all of us except for (Y/N)!" Miu justified, which is a valid point. "Besides, I'm still pissed that she tried to take my boy toy away from me!"
"Oi, don't say that stuff around my little sisters!" I reminded the inventor, but she didn't care.
"Um...Miu, we're out of ammo." Kiibo pointed at the machine that was beside them, which was just clicking but didn't fire any bullets or rockets, signaling it was out of ammo.
"BLOODY FUCK!" Miu was now panicking as she struggled to look around her for anything that could be used as bullets.
"So now you guys can only watch in horror as your plans start falling apart." Kurumi giggled sadistically, but we're not done, evident by an arrow and kitchen knife planting themselves in the locker next to her.
"Sorry for the wait, the archery club was reluctant to give me a bow." Rantaro took another arrow from a quiver at his waist before drawing it back. "Kirumi, mind giving us some cover?"
"Of course." Kirumi reached behind a nearby door and pulled out a folding table that was covered in Kevlar before slamming the table between everyone on my side and Kurumi. "Don't worry, Himiko has the other side covered."
"I cast barrier, nyeh!" The magician in question shouted before a golden barrier covered everyone on the other side of us. "Pretty neat, Tenko?"
"You're as amazing as always Himiko." Tenko suddenly jumped from inside a nearby locker that was in the trap area before locking Kurumi into a hold. "Hey (Y/N), quit being a degenerate and help seal off Kurumi's power!"
"Sure thing." I rushed into the trapped zone and attempted to write '盗' on Kurumi's hand, but somehow, she almost managed to shoot me with her angel before turning her attention to Tenko.
With the gun pressed against her head, Tenko was forced to jump back before assuming her normal Neo Aikido stance. Kurumi tried shooting at us once more, but Gonta managed to rush in holding a riot shield, blocking the bullet with ease. I was about to ask him where he got it, but then I noticed Shuichi and Kaede were now with us, with Shuichi holding an assault rifle and Kaede holding pepper spray. Shuichi has connections to the police force, so maybe he's the guy who gave us the fancy tools.
"What is wrong with all of you?!" Kurumi shouted, reminding me of a rat in a corner, trying their best to keep what they have. "Are all of you so desperate to die you'd be willing to die just to make my life more miserable?! Is that it?!"
"None of us fear death anymore." Kaito walked up to us, slightly out of breath. "We've died before, felt the pain of death, felt life leave our bodies. Every moment of painful agony until death comes for us will be familiar, but to you, it won't be."
"You're all crazy!" Kurumi shouted before aiming her gun at me before summoning another to aim at Gonta. "You'll just die like animals!"
Before Kurumi could shoot at us, her hands were suddenly forced apart, like chains pulled on opposite sides of her. Kokichi and I smirked, causing me to release The Circle Act 1's effect to reveal eight of the clowns were pulling on chains that were put on either side of Kurumi. In case you don't know when I did this, it was when 1 pulled Maki out of the trapped area, I nodded at Kokichi to signal what I was doing.
"Whatever, my clones will be here any minute to kill you!" Kurumi laughed, but that laughter died down as time went on with no clones showing up in the slightest.
"Sorry Miss, but your clones won't be showing up." All of us turned our attention to two figures walking down the hall. The person who was talking was that asshole who shot me with the arrow, but the other one was much more familiar...
"Indeed, King and I managed to take care of most of them." Kotori looked different, she was radiating an aura of flames, it didn't take a genuine genius to realize my step sister was a spirit.
Before either of them could explain, a group of clones suddenly appeared behind them, and I saw King look pissed for a moment. In the flash of a moment, King summoned a fancy sword in a flash of blue and gold light. With the sword, the man managed to swing upwards to fill the hallway behind him with fast flowing water, lightning, ice, sand, wind, and rocks. In an instant, all of those clones of Kurumi were whipped out, causing King to dismiss his sword with ease. Once the water and other materials were gone, there was no sign of the clones of Kurumi. How did this guy just take out a group of clones like they were nothing?!
While everyone else was distracted, Tenko grabbed onto Kurumi's legs to ensure she didn't try anything else before ordering me to seal off Kurumi's power. I finally wrote '盗' on Kurumi's left eyelid, causing her astral dress and angel to disappear in a flash of light. Gonta, once again leant the girl his jacket because it could qualify as a quilt thanks to how big he is. After I absorbed Kurumi's power into myself, everyone collapsed from exhaustion.
"GRAAAAAAH!" Tenko screamed in exhaustion as she leaned her back against the wall. "Is there any chance we never have to do that crap again?! I thought I was gonna die again!"
"AAAAAAAHHHHHH!" Kaito screamed in what appears to be fear, guess he was just holding it in earlier.
"Okay everyone calm down I'm making tea." Kirumi got everyone's attention, still as poised as ever.
"Looks like my work here is done." King was about to walk off.
"But you didn't do anything."
"Of course I didn't, this is (Y/N)'s story, not mine."
(A/N: I know this feels a bit rushed, but hey, Kurumi is now a human and is never getting her powers back. It's not that I hate her or anything, it's just that her powers are way too costly to be used with good intentions. Another thing worth noting is that no one except for Himiko, (Y/N), and probably Gonta are the only ones in this series who used magic. Himiko's magic is gonna be from Dungeons and Dragons, (Y/N) has his stand and paintbrush, and Gonta just commands/talks to bugs (not sure if that last one is magic or not). Korekiyo's little stunt is just him using anti-spirit tools that anyone can use, and Miu's can be summarized to a really powerful magnet.
