Chapter 10: Big Brother
(Your POV)
After Angie and I left Origami's apartment, the spatial quake alarm rang out, and the two of us ran towards the stairwell to begin climbing the stairs. The two of us weren't really surprised when we saw Yoshino riding Zadkiel in front of the apartment building. I attempted to get Yoshino's attention by waving Yoshinon above my head while Angie used her phone to let everyone know what the hell's going on.
"Hey Yoshino, over here!" I shouted in an attempt to get her attention, succeeding the making the small spirit look my way with tears in her eyes. "Everything's going to be alright now that Yoshinon is here, isn't that right?"
"Right!" I attempted my best to sound like Yoshinon while making the puppet's mouth move in accordance to what I made him say. "Everything's going to be alright now!"
"Target acquired." A familiar monotone voice said from behind Angie and I, causing the two of us to turn around to see a whole bunch of AST units swarming toward Yoshino.
Not even five seconds later, the AST began firing a series of missiles and lasers as Yoshino, causing the rabbit puppet to roar before jumping off somewhere. I was beyond pissed about this, not only did the AST shoot at a literal child, but made my job harder than it would have had to be. I shouted in frustration a bit before activating <Sun Painter Amaterasu> and began painting the scene in front of me onto the ground.
"(Y/N), Angie, what's going on down there?!" Kotori shouted into both Angie and my own earpieces, making both of us grab our earpieces in response.
"AST being a bunch of unhelpful third wheels again." I reported as I painted the finer details of the AST units on the ground. "Don't worry, I have a way to take care of them in a matter of seconds."
"THEY'RE ATTACKING A CHILD?!" Kaito screamed in shock, almost enough for me to lose concentration in the painting I was painting. "That's so unmanly of them! Get those mother fuckers!"
"Isn't it unmanly to attack girls like that?" Reine asked in a curious voice. "Plus stooping to such a level to use an underhanded trick like that makes you just as bad as them."
"I yearn for true gender equality." I say before reciting a line I always wanted to say. "I have no patience for one who talks about female privilege when it suits them and complains about someone 'not being a man' when it's convenient."
"Okay, that aside, how are you going to approach this (Y/N)?" Kotori asked, obviously questioning what the hell's going through my head. "We can use the warp to get Angie out of there and send Kiibo instead. After all, he's the only one of us who can actually help you, at least until Miu makes a nuke by accident."
"After I finish my next work of art, send Kiibo to act as a distraction, from there I'll try to close the gap between Yoshino and I." I look up to take a reference of the scenery before me, taking notice that Yoshino was now on top of a building, surrounded by an ice tornado.
Angie waved to me right before disappearing and in her place was none other than the ultimate robot himself, Kiibo. As for me, I finally finished my ground painting, which perfectly depicted the scene in front of me down to the very last detail. I used my brush to create black storm clouds that didn't leak rain, but instead I painted lightning bolts striking each of the AST units. Moments later, dark gray clouds appeared overhead of us, and wasted no time in striking each of the AST units with black lightning.
"What was that?" Kiibo asked as he started up his jet pack and arm cannons. "It seems useful."
"Voodoo painting, it does just as the name implies." I answered while running forward and walking on a path made of black ink. "Now come on, you shoot the ice shards and make a path for me. Got it?"
"Sure thing!" Kiibo soared into the air and followed me while I had <The Circle Act 1> out and ready to fight. "Look out!"
I jumped out of the way and realized that not all of the AST units were knocked out by my lightning, Origami was holding some weird greatsword and charging towards me. I realized that Origami most likely doesn't know about Amaterasu or even the Circle, so I painted a mask onto my face that resembled a knight's visor. Origami slashed at me with her sword, but I wrote 'barrier' in front of me to take the hit. Kiibo shot at the AST unit with his arm canons, but all of the shots were absorbed by the sword.
While Kiibo was distracting Origami, I used my stand to make myself undetectable to Origami and use my paint to run behind her. Once I made a platform behind her, I decided to try something. I focused purple energy into my spare hand and began imagining that energy taking a familiar shape, a greatsword. Not any greatsword, Tohka's greatsword <Sandalphon>.
The moment I deactivated my stand, the greatsword was already in my hand and was overflowing with raw power. Origami turned around to attempt to counter the source, but she went wide eyed at seeing me dual wielding the paintbrush and greatsword. Now, you may be thinking I'm now an overpowered badass, but you're wrong. For starters, I have no fucken idea how to use a normal sword, much less one that's used by a spirit, so everything I'm using it for is pure guesswork.
I lifted the heavy blade upwards and attempted a downwards slash with the superior weight of my sword. Origami tried blocking the sword and was sent to the ground in an instant. Origami's impact was seen by me, which caused a crater. I would have apologized, but I still find it dirty to try and harm a child, even if she is a spirit. Origami pulled out a gun from behind her and began shooting at me, most likely thinking I'm a spirit. I used my paintbrush's ink to block the bullet.
I raised <Sandalphon> above me once more and slashed downwards, causing the brilliant purple slash of energy down towards Origami. Origami managed to dodge the slash by flying a bit, but the spot I slashed at was above a very unstable subway station, and building around Origami suddenly came crashing down on top of her. Once she was gone, I walked down to the rubble and began looking around in the rubble. After a minute or two, I found an unconscious Origami, so I placed her on top of the rubble and healed her injuries using my paintbrush.
Once I made sure my opponent was healed, I made several black platforms made of solidified ink to allow me to walk on the air. I jumped into the air once more and was met with Kiibo looking at me in a confused manner. I on the other hand deactivated Tohka's power and the sword disappeared. I hope I will never have to use a spirit's power again, cause that was draining as hell.
"How did you know how to summon an angel like that?" Kiibo asked as the two of us continued running towards Yoshino. "Also, why did you heal Origami like that?"
"Apparently a spirit's angel is kind of like the Walmart great value version of a relic, so it was easy to figure out." I explained while taking off my paint mask and throwing it onto the ground. "Plus it felt just natural to me for some reason, the only reason I don't use it more is because I'm that great with weapons."
"That doesn't explain why you decided to save Origami." Kiibo commented before blasting a large chunk of ice that was heading my ways.
"I felt pity for her when Angie and I went into her apartment." I answered honestly, I think Kiibo has been installed with a lie detector. "Her apartment was painfully plain, so I decided I won't only keep her alive, but fill her life with vibrant colors."
"Aw that's so romantic, too bad Miu would get jealous if you only focused on her." Kiibo sweatdropped at my dream, but I was confused about the last part he said.
"Be careful (Y/N), Kiibo." Reine orders us from our earpiece. "There's no easy way to enter the tornado. The amount of ice increases as your go down the tornado, but you won't risk fall damage if you enter through the bottom. Kiibo, you have to be careful not to overuse your cannons."
"Understood Ms.Murasame!" Kiibo nods in understanding despite the woman not actually being here.
Even after we got a basic idea of the situation at hand, the two of us didn't stop until we both came face to face with the tornado. Kiibo landed beside me and aimed his arm cannons, I had no choice but to trust him right now. I took a deep breath and wrote a couple words on my arm to give myself a small healing factor and skin as durable as stone.
"I'll do my best (Y/N), and you do the same." Kiibo's eyes were full of determination to not shoot the ice, but to help me save a life.
"Thank you." I thanked the robot before dashing into the icy tornado, I don't know about you guys, but I'm liking this new character.
The moment I entered the tornado, a chunk of ice struck my cheek, which still hurt even with my hardened skin. I would have summoned <Sandalphon>, but I couldn't see Yoshino, and the angel's wide ranged attacks could end up hurting her. So in the end, I was forced to tank ice spike after ice spike, but I couldn't blame Kiibo for this, he was legitimately doing his best. I opened my eyes to see a series of explosions happening close to me, and the ice that was about to hit me was a lot larger than the ice that actually did hit me.
I was hit in the kneecap by a slightly large ice chunk and that forced me to the ground with a surprised shout. I stood back up while still getting bombarded by the ice, still pushing forward. I kept on walking until I felt something soft and cold beneath my feet. Snow. I was standing on snow. I walked forward until I could no longer hear the sound of explosions caused by Kiibo's arm canons nor can I feel the ice chunks hitting me repeatedly.
I looked around to see it was pitch black all around me, and the only source of light in the entire area around me was around a familiar rabbit puppet in front of me. <Zadkiel> was just laying there, dormant, because the puppeteer was on the puppet's back. I walked forward while pulling Yoshinon out of my pocket, it was hard to see, but the puppet sustained no damage. I breathed a sigh of relief, taking notice that my breath came out visible even in the low light area.
I walked forwards, noticing that it got colder with every step. My feet crunched underneath the snow beneath my feet, and the snow level kept on rising as I walked towards the sobs. I tried using my relic to paint something to help me, but the lower temperature froze my paintbrush bristles and the paint. I may never run out of ink, but if it's frozen, it's as good as gone. I used <The Circle Act 1> on something I haven't tried yet, the cold. I didn't feel the cold, but I felt frost covering my body, limiting my movements. Just because I made the cold undetectable to me, doesn't mean I made it disappear.
I kept on walking until my exhaustion got the better of me and I suddenly collapsed onto my knees. I tried moving them, but both my legs were numb despite the fact I was wearing pants. I used my paintbrush to hold myself up, then I held the puppet out to Yoshino and said something.
"I told you everything would be fine." I said in my best Yoshinon impression, causing the sobs to stop coming, then Yoshino looked down at me in disbelief. "What? You didn't believe this pervert would help you? You should have more faith than that!"
"(Y-Y/N)?!" Yoshino shouted before jumping off <Zadkiel> and running towards me to embrace me in a hug. "...Y-You need t-to go, I-I'll just end u-up hurting you..."
"It's fine Yoshino, you must not worry about me." I accepted the hug before returning one of my own. "You should worry about yourself a bit more, you're way too kind."
"S-Sorry." Yoshino apologized sweetly while she cried into my shoulder. "It's j-just t-that w-whenever I appear s-someone always gets hurt."
"Lucky for you, I have an offer that can help you live a normal life." I began naming my offer to the now-interested spirit. "I take your spirit powers into my own body, and that allows you to live your life out peacefully without worry of hurting anyone ever again."
"But w-won't you end up h-hurting people l-like m-me?" Yoshino asked, which I guess she wasn't exactly wrong. "Also, why do you need to steal my power?"
"I would seal your power off entirely, but there's two reasons I decided not to." I explained calmly. "Call me greedy, but when dealing with beings that could be considered gods, I'm gonna need all the power I can get. Another issue is that I believe that spirits are key to something, but none of us can figure out what. So keeping their power active should be a better idea if that's the case."
"O-Okay, I-I accept." Yoshino breaks the hug before holding up a finger, then she speaks without her shy tone. "On o-one condition..."
"I'm listening." I respected Yoshino's display of courage, even if it was for just talking like a normal person.
"I-I don't really h-have any f-family a-anymore so I-I was w-wondering if y-you would be m-my..." Yoshino suddenly went red faced, making me tilt my head in confusion. "...big b-brother?"
"You got it kid." I noticed a crack in the cloud above us allowing some sunlight into the area, and I quickly shifted the tip of my paintbrush towards the sunlight to let it heat up. "Do you have anything you'd like to do before I seal off your powers?"
"No, you can continue." Yoshino used Yoshinon to speak, and the tip of my paintbrush start glowing gold to signal I could use sun paint.
I used <Sun Painter Amaterasu> to write '奪' on Yoshino's head, causing a flash of light to cover her entire body. Unlike last time, I made a black dress made out of solidified ink and slipped it onto Yoshino before her astral dress completely disappeared. The dress fit perfectly and stayed on even after the astral dress disappeared completely. Yoshino was now passed out because living things aren't designed to withstand such shifts in power. I caught Yoshino and carried her on my back, watching as Zadkiel began disappearing.
Around us,the tornado gradually slowed down until it completely disappeared, letting the chunks of ice that were once spinning fall to the ground. The clouds began departing to reveal more of the blue sky and radiant sun, which was still black in my eyes but still warm as hell. Kiibo walked up to us with a Glad smile on his face, but the mood was completely ruined by the sight of several AST units all around us with their weapons pointed at us.
"Stop right there, drop the spirit and leave!" One of the AST units shouted, pissing me off further, but then I felt something different with the Circle, I turned around and smirked.
"Check your scanners, Yoshino is now a human girl!" Kiibo shouted to his former allies, but they weren't wavering. "Okay, I tried. Any ideas (Y/N)?"
"I do, but it's a long shot." I adjusted my grip on Yoshino with one hand and pointed at the AST units with my other hand. "The Circle Act 2!"
The Circle Act 2 jumped in front of Kiibo and I before clapping its hands loud enough for the entire area to hear. I didn't know what to expect, but I got a pretty good idea when one of the AST units began screaming about not being able to see or hear anything, followed by another. Before Kiibo and I knew what was going on, all of the AST units were deaf and blind, an effect I hope is not permanent. Kiibo was obviously confused by what I just pulled, as were my friends.
"When the hell did you learn you could do that?" Ryoma asked in a questioning tone. "I thought you just made things disappear."
"I think the Circle gets more acts with every spirit I steal from." I said, questioning how many spirits there are. "By the way, how many spirits are there?"
"I found that there are at least 10 spirits, all of which correspond somewhere on the Sephirothic system." Korekiyo answered, I expected no less from the Ultimate Anthropologist, aka, folklore scientist. "While we have no idea what Tohka represents, I can say that Yoshino represents Justice."
"Flat is justice I guess." Miu commented, there was a moment of silence where I'm going to assume that everyone just stared at Miu. "What? You all know I'm right."
"I know, but please, never say that about Yoshino again." Kirumi politely requested the inventor, who sounded like she pouted. "All of us agreed that Yoshino must never be lewded."
"What happens if they do lewd her?" I asked, I was curious about how everyone would react.
"Then redemption can wait." Everyone said in sync, even Gonta, and I thought he was a pacifist nowadays.
"I would say that's overkill, but you know what, let's protect my little sister."
(A/N: I told you guys Yoshino wasn't going to be in the harem. I would have gone with a teenage version of her, but I couldn't find any images. If and when I write the konosuba fanfic for [Dragon], Megumin and Yunyun probably aren't going to be in the harem for the same reason. Call me a...I'm not sure what you'd call me, but I'm not risking a run in with the FBI.
