Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Jerk's Decision

A/N: Ah, I figured I should point this out again just to head off any confusion. The reference I use for this story is the manga of Naruto, not the anime. During this scene, the manga only offers around two panels, leaving the event mostly to the reader to expound upon in their own mind. All it reveals is that Kakashi woke up and that Gai was in the room when he did- Naruto having been somewhere else. As such, I'm going to take liberties with it~ It's the big moment you guys have been waiting for! I'm glad to bring it to you before I start the next arc and tear all of your feels into shreds...  anyways, this takes place after they've all returned from the mission!

P.S. I've had this scene planned since before I'd begun this book.

Miki had forgotten that she was angry.

Instead, she was simply waiting for him to wake up. When he was awake- then she could be pissed again. Until then, she'd wait. She wasn't worried about whether or not he'd wake, Kakashi wasn't the sort to allow himself to die like this. Sleeping away... that wasn't him. One way or another, he'd wake up. It was just a matter of time.

The effort it took to keep constant company for him, however, began to wear on her. This was most likely why when the door was pulled open, revealing a large chested blonde, a black-haired girl, as well as everyone's favorite bowl-headed jounin, she was fast asleep. Her arms were tucked beneath her head, crimson hair sprayed out around her. Slightly surprised, the blonde glanced back at Guy with a questioning expression. In turn, he stepped past her and gently shook Miki's shoulder. Having never been a heavy sleeper, she instantly woke.

"Guy...?" she mumbled, lifting her head as a yawn escaped her lips. "What are you... I thought you went out on a mission..."

"We're back," he announced. "And so are Naruto and Jiraiya!"

As soon as the words registered in her mind, she jolted into attention, her eyes flickering past him to meet the amused expression on the older kunoichi's face. Jumping to her feet, she glanced between where Tsunade and Shizune  stood to where Kakashi laid, her expression falling somewhere between relief and wariness.

"You can fix him, then?" she asked.

Tsunade nodded, stepping up so that she was standing next to Miki.

"I can. Who're you, his girlfriend?" she questioned.

Flushing a deep, instant red, Miki shook her head, allowing her hair to fall into place to block view of her cheeks.

"No! We're... we're just friends."

If anything, Tsunade's amusement only grew, her expression betraying how little confidence she held in Miki's words.

"I see."

Then, without further ado,she stepped forward and went through the required steps to wake Kakashi. Anxiously, Miki stood as close as she dared, waiting for any sign of what was going on while attempting not to irritate the older blonde. Within a few moments, a groan escaping his lips, Kakashi's eyes fluttered open. The second he started to push himself up the sheet laying over his face slipped down so that it was caught just beneath his nose- revealing that even in the coma-like state he'd been in, he'd still worn his mask. The moment his mind caught up with him, Kakashi paused, his eyes flickering past Tsunade to where Miki stood. At the instantly furious expression that appeared on her face, he raised one hand to rub the back of his head.

"I... I'll assume I missed drinks."

Shock appeared on Guy's face, a smug expression of being confirmed to be right on Tsunade's, and simple amusement on Shizune. Miki, however, clenched her fists at her side as she glared at him for a moment longer.

"You did," she snapped. "I waited for hours."

He blinked slowly, his expression carefully even.

"Hours?"

"Hours," she confirmed. "You jerk."

Without warning, her pissed expression disappeared, replaced with suspiciously shiny eyes. Suddenly moving past Tsunade, Miki flung her arms around him, causing him to fall back to the bed with a thump. Deciding that was her cue to move on, Tsunade turned to go, Guy urging her to go check on Lee now that Kakashi was awake. At the same time, his gaze kept flickering past her to where Kakashi and Miki where. Miki's arms were wrapped around him in a suffocating hug, Kakashi's body pressed back on the hospital bed, view of his face just barely blocked by the curtain of crimson hair created by Miki's presence.

"Come on. Are we checking or not?"

At Tsunade's comment, Guy spun to face the door and escorted them out. The moment that it'd fallen shut behind them, Miki lifted her head which had been tucked beside Kakashi's. Her eyes searched his for a moment, lips pursed.

"If you ever do something like that again, you won't have to worry about waking up," she informed him.

"Is that a threat?" he questioned.

"It's a promise," she retorted, then paused for a moment, her eyes flickering to his mask as an undefinable feeling swept through her- something akin to relief. "You even wear your mask in a hospital room. How pathetic is that?"

He's awake.

She loosened her hug somewhat, the comforting, mental words having a small effect in helping her relax. Kakashi, in turn, chuckled, raising a single brow as he made no move to shove her away.

"It's not really pathetic," he mused. "Do you have a problem with my face being covered?"

Flushing red for the second time that afternoon, Miki scowled.

"Of course not! I was just noticing something is all. How the hell did you get that idea?"

His lips twisted up beneath his mask in amusement.

"Well, you are laying on me..."

Turning an even deeper shade of crimson, she instantly shoved away from him, hitting his chest with one hand.

"See if I ever show concern for you again, jerk," she grumbled. "To think I was worried when you didn't show up for the date..."

A thoughtful expression crossed Kakashi's face as she pulled away, his eye narrowed for a moment. A second later he caught her shirt as she started to shift to the side of the bed. The expression on his face in that moment was nothing if not determined. In that single moment, he'd come to a decision about what to do about their situation.

"What're yo-" she began irritably.

She was cut off as Kakashi raised his opposing hand and in one swift motion, tugged his mask away as he brought Miki closer. Within a second her lips were pressed against his, her hands squeezed against his chest. She froze, her entire body going stiff.

A second later she melted against him, hands clutching his shirt just as his clutched hers. In that single second, several things happened. A warmth seemed to spread from that touch, spreading through her entire frame. Her senses went into overdrive, picking on small details like how strangely soft his lips were, how they fit perfectly against hers, and how somehow despite being soft they were chapped as well. How he had some sort of scent around him, not as much a floral as perhaps... earthy?

In the next second, he'd released her shirt, pulled away from the kiss,  and shifted so that his forehead was resting against hers.

"Thanks for worrying."

Breathless and just a bit overwhelmed, she could only stare back at him, her entire face slowly heating up enough to match her hair.

"N-no problem."

As he took in her reaction, his entire form seemed to relax. It wasn't until that moment that she'd even realized he'd been tense. A faint, teasing smile appeared on his lips, his hand reaching up to lightly brush her loose hair. Perhaps it was how overwhelmed she seemed, or the fact that after the action he felt uncomfortable with her just staring at him, saying nothing, but the next words that crossed his mind slipped out without any thought to the matter.

"That much and you're out of breath. I must be good."

Flushing even deeper red, if possible, Miki pulled away, her hands reaching up almost of their own accord to run through her hair, shifting it between them.

"Not particularly," she muttered. "I've had better."

Almost instantly his eyes narrowed as he tried to decipher whether or not she was telling the truth.

"You've kissed other people?" he questioned.

A defensive look crossed her face.

"Of course! How old do you think I am? It'd be strange if I hadn't, wouldn't it?"

"Who?"

"Does it matter?"

"Oh, so you haven't."

Almost instantly, he relaxed once again, causing a scowl to settle on Miki's lips.

"I have," she insisted.

He rose a brow.

"Then who?"

"... you remember that mission shortly after I became a jounin? The one to the Land of Waves?"

Kakashi frowned thoughtfully, attempting to pull up the mission. A second later his expression was disbelieving.

"Him?"

"Yes, him," she announced triumphantly.

"He was a player."

"He was charming," Miki countered. "And rather cute."

His eyes narrowed once again.

"And better?" he challenged.

Mischief crossed her face.

"That's what I said."

There was no hesitation in his gaze this time when he propped himself up and suddenly caught the back of her head with his hand, bringing her into a kiss once again. Unlike the first, it was deeper, lasting more than a second. By the time he released her this time, her head spun, that blush having returned.

"Better?" he demanded.

"You kissed me," she mumbled instead of replying. "Again."

"I did."

"You did it twice."

"I did."

"... you... do you... I mean... could you...I mean... is it possible you li-" she cut herself off, took a deep breath, and tried again. "That... you... "

As she searched for the right words, his lips once again twisted up in amusement.

"I wonder."

"Kakashi!"

Her hand slapped his chest, only causing even more amusement to appear on his face.

"I think you get kicked out if you abuse the patient."

"Kakashi, you jerk!"

It was after they'd returned from their mission that the letter came. Like all the others, it was sent by bird to Kazue's house, almost as if the sender had known what time she'd come back. With anxious, excited motions, she'd torn open the letter and scanned the contents, her excitement only growing as she read it.

She hadn't seen him since before the attack on the village. They'd both been busy and hadn't had the chance to meet. The letter changed that.

He wanted to meet that evening on their usual training grounds, at the usual time. All day after receiving it, she'd kept it on her, glancing to check and make sure it was real. Sure, maybe she was a little too excited for her own good. Could anyone really blame Kazue, though? Unlike the person that her family was pairing her with, Kabuto was easy to talk to. She could joke and train with him without feeling like she was insulting him just by standing there. She could laugh with him and to be honest, she felt more comfortable around him than most people.

So sure, she might have gotten a little too attached to a guy a bit older than her. She didn't regret it.

She trusted him.

Perhaps it was because of how excited she was that she didn't notice Jun walking beside her down the street until he spoke.

"So, what's so interesting about that letter?"

Startled, Kazue jumped, at the same time dropping the letter to her side so he couldn't read it.

"Nothing."

He rose a brow.

"Nothing?"

"Nothing," she snapped. "It's from a friend. That's all."

Jun studied her for a moment, then shrugged, hooking his arms behind his head.

"Noriaki was wondering where you were," he informed her. "Said he hadn't seen you all day and made me help him look. You should probably go let him know you're alive."

Kazue sighed, but nodded, tucking the letter in her pocket.

"Alright. Do you know where he was heading?" she asked.

Jun looked thoughtful for a moment, then suddenly hooked his arm with hers, an easy-going grin settling on his lips.

"I'll escort you there! I can't wait to see Nori-kun's face when he finds out I found you first!"

Kazue rolled her eyes, but allowed him to show her along anyways, knowing better than to argue the point. As they walked, Easily caught the letter between two of his fingers and slipped it from her pocket. Usually, he would have let it be and simply brought it up later to tease her about having a secret boyfriend, but...

He had a bad feeling about it.

The last time he'd had that feeling was the night before they made it out of the Forest of Death and he'd almost shown his bloodline limit to everyone at the prelims.

He wasn't ignoring the feeling this time.

A/N: The author has died of feels and anticipation of her reader's reactions.
