Chapter one

After hogwarts Remus' life started to spiral, his transformations only got worse and when the nurse who helped him after the moons turned out to be a girl they'd gone to school with and his bestfriends older sister Faye Mckinnon, who's only aspiration was to work in the medical field regardless if it was magical or muggle. Remus leant on her for support and for more intimate matters when Sirius was acting cold towards him and one thing always led to another with Faye.

Not long after James and lily had welcomed Harry into the world Faye had given birth too a girl and hadn't informed Remus until she had gotten pregnant again, her whole family was gone by then and she felt she needed help. Remus for months questioned how he hadn't recognised the signs but he was imminently distracted by the war and Sirius' distance, he also didn't make it a habit to see her after every moon. When Remus' world crumbled around him on October 31st 1981 he didn't know where else to turn so he vowed to make it work with Faye.

Remus thought it was a safe option but Faye was turning out to be a terrible nurse because of her addiction to anything that helped her stay numb after all of her family was murdered by Voldemort, though she hid it well. Remus's kryptonite was another kind, alcohol. It stopped him from thinking about Marlene, lily, James, Peter and the one he loved more than anyone who turned out to be a traitor. It also didn't help when they added children to the mix.

When they had gotten pregnant for the third time Remus tried to get sober but Faye caused him to relapse every time it was like she didn't want to be the disappointing parent on her own, she had to take remus with her. Hope Lupin, Remus' mum was a big help in those first 4 years. Their first child Marley-mae was advanced for her age and by the time she was 3 she was practically raising herself and her two year old brother when their nan wasn't around.

She was the eldest of Remus Lupins children and an amazing witch, that's probably why she was sorted into ravenclaw in her first year at hogwarts. Remus named her after one of his best friends and Fayes younger sister, who was also amazing and hard to live up to, Marlene McKinnon was extraordinary in her time but she was brutally killed for Voldemort's cause. Along with almost all Remus' friends and the rest of Faye's family.

By the time Marley-mae was six Hope had gotten a muggle illness, cancer and she was to sick to help out. Hope had recovered but not until Marley had turned ten, so it was all left to Marley, Jamie was a year younger than her and Finan was three years younger. Their mum was always there but she wasn't present, she was too high to take any notice to her husband or the kids and Remus, well he was trying. But failing in his daughters eyes.

When Marley went to hogwarts for the first time she was terrified and contemplated coming home a thousand times but Jamie assured her that he and finan were fine almost everyday. When the year after came Jamie was at hogwarts too, sorted in to slytherin. Marley made Hope move in to there home whilst they weren't there even though Remus had actually made an effort to get sober properly that year.

That brings us to now. The end of summer before Marley's third year, she stood in the bathroom staring at herself in the mirror when she heard a quiet knock on the door.

"Marls when will dinner be ready" finan spoke softly.

"Is dad still not home" she sat herself on the edge of the bathtub.

"Jamie said earlier that he's at an AA meeting again" he frowned.

"Okay, well you go and wake Jamie up and set the table and I'll make us something okay" she put her hands on his shoulders and kissed the top of his head. "How does pasta sound" she smiled.

"Sounds great" he spun around walking to his brothers room.

Marley stood again and took a deep breath splashing her face with cold water before she made her way to the kitchen.

She put the last of the pasta they had into a pan filled with water and set out five bowls. She could hear here younger brothers in the other room messing about as they set the table. She drained the pasta and added a tomato sauce to it and threw in random herbs she found in the cupboard. Once she'd put it in all the bowls she but one in the fridge for Remus and called the boys in to get the food.

Before she joined them she sighed as she walked down the hall with a bowl in her hand and knocked lightly on the end door belonging to her parents. The room was dark as she entered and she had to kick her way through piles of stuff to get to the bed.

"Mum" she set down the bowl on the bedside table and sat on the edge of the bed, "mum it's me Marley I've made you something to eat" the placed two of her fingers on the side of her throat to check her pulse. Still beating.

"Get out" she groaned pulling the covers up higher.

"I'm going, just please eat something" Marley pleaded.

"OUT" she shouted hitting her arm.

Marley left and closed the door behind her joining her brothers at the table.

"She okay" Jamie said with a mouthful of pasta.

"Don't talk with your mouth full James, yes she's okay" she made her way to her seat stopping to kiss the top of finans head.

"Yes mum" Jamie rolled his eyes and Marley smacked the back of his head.

They ate the pasta and it was almost 9pm by the time they'd finished.

"When are you both going back to hogwarts" Finan spoke after a big gulp of water.

"A few days, now come on you need to get a bath." She reached out and ruffled his hair. "Jamie can you clear the table please"

He nodded and started to do as he was told while Marley ran a bath and left her youngest brother to get in. She pottered about the house picking up various items of dirty washing and putting them in the machine before getting pyjamas for Finan and a towel out of the dryer.

Once he was ready for bed he said goodnight to Jamie and Marley got him settled in his room.

"Marls" he called as she was tidying his room.

"Yeah" she smiled over too him.

"Do you both have to leave" he frowned.

"Sorry kid, we do" she sat down next to him.

"I hate it when your gone" he leaned his head on her shoulder.

"Well nans going to be here again just like last year, and I know dad won't be but your school is only a few streets away and nan knows how to cook at least"

"Nans old and it's not fair that dad finally gets better and he's been summoned to hogwarts" he huffed.

"I know kid but I'll be back for Christmas, and next year you'll be coming with us to hogwarts" she nudged him.

"I can't wait" he smiled up to her.

"Okay now go to sleep please, I'm going to wait up for dad" she kissed his head again and turned off his lamp leaving the room.

She could hear Jamie pacing backwards and forwards in his room so she took a vial out of her potions stash and gave him a calming drought. The full moon was tomorrow night and he was the only one of Remus's children that had gotten his affliction. Marley had taken care of him after every single full moon that he'd transformed from the age of 4, she was only 5 herself.

She sat with him until he'd started to fall asleep and then made her way to the living room and turned on her dads record player picking up one of his books getting herself comfy on the couch. She had almost fallen asleep when she heard the front door close.

"Marley-mae, why are you still awake" Remus sat himself at her feet.

"Why what time is it" she sat herself upright and looked at the clock that read 01:35am.

"Dad where have you been you went to that meeting at six" she closed the book and looked at her father.

"My sponsor treated me to dinner and helped me get some things sorted for while I'm at hogwarts" he clasped his hands in his lap.

"You haven't been drinking" she raised her eyebrow.

"No, I haven't and that's not your concern." He snapped. She blamed the close full moon.

"It's my concern and you know it" she snapped back swinging her legs of the couch.

"I'm trying my best marls can you just believe that" he said as she got of the couch.

"Where was this effort when I had to raise myself and my brothers-" she started to walk away, "oh right you were too drunk to care"

Her comment made him bite.

"That's not fair, I've apologised" he tried to argue.

"Whatever dad" she rolled her eyes.

Just as Remus was about to shout back at her a faint scream came from down the hall and Marley sighed knowing exactly what it was. Remus' eyes went wide and he moved to walk down the hall but was stopped by his daughter pushing her book into his chest.

"Don't. I'll deal with it" she growled.

"He's my son" he looked down at her.

"Good for you. He's my responsibility and I know what I'm doing" she stormed away "unlike you" she said bitterly.

When she got to her littlest brothers bedroom she could hear him shouting in his sleep. He's had nightmares since he was little and Marley was the one to pick up the pieces of them as usual. She didn't mind, she would do anything for those boys.

Quickly she slid in place behind the small boy thrashing out. She wrapped her arms around him to keep him still.

"It's okay Fin, I'm here" she ran a hand across his forehead that was covered in sweat.

He was mumbling under his breath as he slept starting to calm down. "Marls" he whispered.

She rocked him back and forth slowly humming a tune to soothe him. It took him a while to calm down but eventually he did and she untangled herself and left the room silently.

Marley always needed sugar after he had a nightmare, it was like she poured all her energy into him. So she got herself some apple juice from the fridge and sat at the counter rubbing her eyes with her hands.

"How is he" Remus came into the kitchen, now in his pyjamas.

"He's fine. There's pasta in the fridge for you" She replied bluntly as she began to potter around and tidy up the mess from earlier.

"Marley don't, let me do that" Remus put his hand over his daughters and she snapped her head up to look at him.

"I can do it myself" she frowned.

"Your tired" he could tell she was.

"No. I'm fine now leave me to it"

"Marls, you need some sleep you've been up since half 5 this morning" he protested.

"Yes because I had to get mine and Jamie's stuff ready to leave"

Knowing that his daughter was as stubborn as he was he shook his head an flicked his wand making all the mess in the kitchen clean away instantly. He raised his eyebrows in defiance of her and put his hands on his hips.

"Don't do that you look like Nan" she half laughed.

"Oh wait till she hears that one" he returned the laugh, "now listen to me and go to bed" he went to reach out to her but she jumped back away from him and turned to leave the room.

"Night dad" she heard him reply but carried on walking to her room.

Once she was in her room she she put on her pyjamas and climbed into bed and collapsed instantly. Sleep came to her easily.
