A/N: I don't know, I found this in my drafts from literally a year ago and I actually quite like it. Not bad [Joe] if I do say so myself.
Mesmerising. No one else saw it. Everyone thought I was weird. Well, honestly, everyone thinks everyone's weird. I thought Sara was weird for always having something to say and Peter because he liked croquet.
People think I'm weird because I found bicycles mesmerising. Absolute wonderment for me. The way you get on for the first time worried you're going to fall of, rushing down a hill even though it was way too steep, feeling proud of your little brother getting his training wheels off. That was all amazing, but what really got me, the reason I sat on the little grass patch by the curb in front of my house watching cyclists ride down the road, was the wheels. The way they spin, the speeding circles going however many revolutions per minute.
The continuous rotation reminded me of the earth. The way it endlessly spins round itself and round the Sun. How this dictates days and years and time in a human sense. How we are all spinning so very very fast, but we've just got used to it. How we are all so small if you're looking from space. How we're so very complex if you dare look any closer.
It was these existential questions brought on by one simple observation, that lead me on the weirdest journey I'd ever experience. A journey that seemed completely harmless on the outside, but if anyone knew what had actually happened...
So, the marvelous beginning happened at 4:37am on a Monday. I hadn't slept much the night before because I was finishing off a project for school due this day, so I was a little delirious. I sleepily wandered to the front of my house and opened the front door, taking a second the appreciate the still calmness of the city morning.
Being winter, I was in my striped flannel matching pajamas and felt completely comfortable walking out into the world at half past four in the morning, not even half awake and chilling my insides with every icy breath.
Joggers on their early run down my road didn't even spare a look at the suspicious looking thirteen year old with bed-hair staring as they run past. I'd never really liked joggers, they remind me of my commitment issues and lack of physical exercise. Another reason I liked cyclists is you can be an internet junkie or a nature-enthusiast but still ride at the same level.
The first cyclist of the morning was a serious-looking twenty-something businessman in a suit with a briefcase on his way to work. Not my favourite kind, unlike the second and third.
They came together, the next two riders. A girl and a boy who, as I would l would later find out, were exactly my age. They were out of bed at 5am and they were interested in me! I know this because they both looked at each other and stopped at my sides on the footpath.
"What are you doing awake and outside this early? And don't ask why we are, we're recruiting." That was the girl I think.
"I'm up because I didn't sleep because I was finishing schoolwork and I'm outside because of you." Me.
"Us? But you don't know who we are." Boy.
"No, I don't. But I know you're cyclists and I know this sounds weird, but I love watching bicycle wheels turn."
They shared another knowing look between each other before the boy informed me,
"You're exactly who we're looking for. Speculative, philosophical and functioning well with minimal sleep. Perfect! I'm Danny and this is Hay-lee and you're coming with us, go get your bike!"
"Oh, okay! Um, I don't have one anymore, it's too small so I gave it to my brother... Can I walk or will I have to ride with one of you?!" I was excited, it was contagious and I didn't care.
Neither said anything, they just smiled with their eyes lighting up and gestured towards the back of Hay-lees' bicycle, which was slightly larger than Danny's.
I hopped on and we were off. I don't remember the journey that well since I think I slipped into my awaken dream-world for a bit, but I do remember the destination cause my good world of horses.
I was speechless. Well, not actually, but I couldn't form any words out loud. I only managed to whisper my name when Hay-lee asked,
"Siennah".
I suppose you'll want to know what I was gaping in such sudden awe at. Get ready for it, prepare yourself. It was cupboard. See, mind=blown. Okay, so normally it wouldn't seem too bad, but it was just so out of place. Not just in a literal sense either, I'd been expecting some crazy spy adventure or something. Not Narnia. Even though Narnia was pretty cool.
"Why is there a lone mahogany cupboard hidden behind a dense mini-forest at the back of the local kids park? That's what you want to know, yeah? Well..."
