2. Fun duty
A/N: I don't want any hate on kids on my books. If you don't like it, feel free to skip or leave. But don't comment how much you hate kids!!!
Waking up in the morning my head is throbbing so hard, I feel like simply burying my head back into the cushion, pulling my blanket over my head and stay right here for the rest of the day.
Guess literally killing the whiskey last night wasn't the best idea, knowing I had to get up early.
Groaning I turn over, but before I get to put my feet on the ground I draw back and decide to at least take another ten minutes to doze. When my alarm sets off for the second time, I manage to somehow push myself out of bed.
First thing I grab for some painkillers I have in my case. Knew it was a good idea to bring them along.
After peeing and brushing my teeth, I decide for a cold shower to wake up decently. Having the blood circulation flowing, due to the cold water, just seems to have my head throbbing even harder instead. So I hurry up as fast as I can.
Once dried I simply throw over a plain white t-shirt and one of my favourite black jeans. With one last look in the mirror I mess through my freshly combed wavy hair once with my hands. It's a stupid habit of mine.
On my way to the kitchen, I nearly get lost in this huge mansion. This place is unbelievable huge. Who the fuck has twenty-three rooms? I mean granted this place is old and all and probably used to have loads of staff here or so, it still seems insane to me.
It's the mouth-watering smell and the sweetest giggles I know, to guide my way to the kitchen or better said dining area.
"Uncle Evans", I hear that sweet little voice squeal as soon as I enter the room.
"Hey, come here Munchkin", I call out, while going down on my knees and stretching out my arms for sweet little Cara.
In an instant she comes crashing into me and I pretend she was able to tumble me over only making her squeal and giggle more in excitement. Even with my pounding head I enjoy every single second of her excitement. Lying on the floor with her, I start tickling her, causing her to squirm and laugh in the sweetest way.
Yes, this tiny girl has got everyone of us wrapped around her fingers and Emily and me as her godparents especially. And Jake? His little angel knows exactly which buttons to push with her daddy, he's such a softie around her. The only one to stand her ground is Sam. It's amusing to watch how stubborn, meets next level stubborn.
"Cara, you're supposed to be eating and not playing around", Emily scolds. "You haven't even really started yet. And your hot chocolate is getting cold too."
"But I want porridge", Cara now standing on her feet, stomps her foot down, her arms wrapped in front of her chest and a frown on her face while pouting.
I can't help but laugh at this mini tantrum.
"I'll get you porridge, if you go and drink your hot chocolate now like aunty Emi wants from you. Okay, Munchkin?"
While Cara gives me a huge smile, Emily on the other hand glares at me.
"Great, so now you're the good uncle and I'm the bad aunt", she huffs. "And there was me taking care of her all night and now you're the hero."
Emi turns like a drama Queen on her four-inch heels and heads back to the table, only causing me to laugh. Ever since Cara was born, there's always been this banter between the two of us.
As soon as I reach the table with a small portion of porridge with apple and cinnamon, and my own plate, Cara gives me a sweet angel smile and Emi huffs again.
"You look like shit, by the way. You ok?", Emi asks lowly once I'm sitting opposite from her. As always, Emi is brutal honest.
"Sure, just a little too much whiskey", which isn't a lie. Not totally anyway. Guilt is still nagging at me for my thoughts yesterday.
"Sure", Emi rolls her eyes, but lets it thankfully slip. If you ask me, I think that's a new for Emi.
Suddenly I feel a warm hand on my shoulder and a voice with it, ruining my mood already. "Good morning Handsome. Did you still get some decent sleep last night?"
"Sure Trace", is all I reply, hoping she'll let it drop.
"Oh, it was one of those nights again", Emi chuckles with a grin on her face.
My eyes dart back and forth between Emi and Tracey. "Oh come on Evans, don't be stupid. Tracey and I still share the apartment, we're friends. Don't look so surprised that I know."
"Great", is all I mutter, before biting into my peanut butter sandwich. I should really stay the fuck away from Tracey. This was the third time, although I had already decided to stay away after the first time, it can be tempting when drunk.
Once finished eating I grab hold of Cara and lift her on my arm. "Emi, you can take a rest now. I'm taking over from here. Thanks for taking care during the night."
"I did that for Sam and Jake and our sweet little Princess, not for you", she rolls her eyes but I know she's not serious. She's simply Emi. And if she could, she'd spend the rest of the day, dressing Cara up like a doll, tell her how to be a real girl and I wouldn't put it past her to teach Cara how to use high-heels. Jeez this woman is insane when it comes down to her high-heels.
"Uncle Evans, skateboard?", hopeful blue eyes look up at me. This girl sure can't deny her parents, making me chuckle.
"Let's get you cleaned up first, Munchkin", I tell her and take her to the next bathroom, washing the porridge from her smeared face.
Cara is almost three now, and she loves to be pushed around on the skateboard or to roll along herself while sitting or kneeling on it. And yes even freaking standing on it. Even if Jake, Emi and I nearly get a heart attack when she does that. I mean she could fall and break her bones. While Sam finds it amusing and teaches her daughter to do just that.
"Ready?", I ask.
"Wait", she replies and hastily turns her cap backwards first, just as her parents do it. It never fails to make me laugh. "Now", she squeals excited.
Slowly I start moving on Jake's skateboard next to her, while she is on hands and knees on Sam's board and pushing along with one leg, racing against me. Of course I let her win and she jumps up and down excited.
"I'm the best", she calls out again and again.
"You really are mummy's girl, aren't you?", there is no denying which attitude Cara has inherited.
We play for another two hours in the garden, before Cara is totally exhausted and I put her down for a nap.
Leaving the room with the baby phone, arms unexpectedly wrap around me from behind.
"Hey, got some free time to spend?"
Seems like it's become a habit by now with Tracey, I roll my eyes again. Luckily, she can't see it. "Sorry Trace, but as you see I'm taking care of Cara at the moment."
Her hands start tracing my abs above my t-shirt. "It's not like she's your child. Besides she's fast asleep now. I'm sure no one will notice if we're gone for an hour."
Slowly I loosen her grip around me and face her. "Look Trace, we both know last night shouldn't have happened."
An annoyed huff escapes her lips. "And why not? I'm quite sure you had your fun last night too."
My good mood from only minutes ago, drops drastically. "For several reasons and you know them all too well. I'm not denying it was fun, but it isn't happening again. So do us both a favour and stay a little out of my way."
With that I leave her standing and make my way back into the room. I'll simply do the same as Cara and take a nap. Easiest way to stay out of reach from Tracey.
I wake up to something or better said someone crawling over me and tugging my arm lightly. "Uncle Evans, skateboard?"
After rubbing my eyes lightly, getting rid of the sleep excess, I smile up at Cara who is now half lying on my chest looking expectantly at me. "Munchkin, I think we need to go for lunch now."
"No, skateboard", she insists with a pout.
"No, mummy is going to give uncle Evans trouble if I don't feed you on time", god knows I don't want to get into trouble with Sam for not feeding her daughter on time. Jake might be angrier but Sam is definitely scarier.
"I protect you, mummy loves Cara", I can't help but laugh at her logic.
"Mummy sure loves you Cara and that's why I would be in trouble. So you can only protect me if you come and eat with me now", with that said, I grab her and get up and ready.
Reaching the dining area, I'm relieved to neither see Tracey nor Emi. Only some of our crew who have also spent the night here. Watching out for Cara not to catch on, I remind Justin to watch his mouth around Cara.
Every single one of our crew adores this child and watches out for her, but Justin still tends to forget he has to watch his mouth around Cara.
Jimmy comes walking over to us and takes a seat right on the other side of Cara. As Jimmy never had own kids, he tends to see Cara as his grand-daughter. Which I guess is a nice idea, everyone profits from as neither Jake or Sam have parents who would be grandparents for her and Jimmy enjoys it.
While he helps Cara eating her peas we talk about the work shifts next week. There have been a few changes in the last few years and now that Sam has cut shorter, things need reorganizing. Apparently, Jimmy is thinking about employing another girl, but isn't too sure. Sam always had the effect, guys were buying even more whenever she was there.
Yeah, sex sells.
Jimmy is joking and saying I should work topless, we might get more girls into the bar that way, catching on Justin snorts. "If he goes topless, I'm not coming anymore. Jeez one time at the skatepark was enough, I needed bleach for my eyes."
"Oh I sure didn't mind", Emi throws in, while entering the dining room. "Holy lord, that was a sight", Ian behind her stiffens at her words and I can't help but laugh. If it wasn't for Cara sat here at the table with us, she'd probably blurt out other things. That's just how I know Emi.
After eating I take Cara out into the garden where I keep on having to pull her away from the fountain she wants to bath in, as I told her no to skateboarding. "Only the hands, Cara", I tell her, but she still tries to crawl in anytime I turn my eyes on her.
It's an amazing warm day with loads of sun, so I also make sure to keep her in the shade a bit. While I'm reading out her favourite story to her in the early afternoon, she suddenly squeals and jumps up running past me. "Daddy, mummy!", she calls out excited.
With one glance behind me I see Jake already crouching down with open arms while Cara is running into his embrace. Once Sam wraps her arms around her too, Cara starts sobbing loudly.
"Hey sweet Angel, what's wrong?", Jake asks while checking all over his daughter to see if he can find anything wrong.
"I missed mummy", she sobs even louder. While Sam squeezes Cara even tighter, a frown appears on Jake's face.
"Only mummy?", he inquires and I can see he feels a little upset.
"No, and daddy", she corrects herself and Jake visibly relaxes.
"Hey, wasn't I good enough for you Cara?", I ask her teasingly, but she simply buries her head further into Jake's chest.
Honestly, I was surprised she didn't ask about them earlier. Although she spends a lot of time with Emi and I, she's never been away from both parents for so long and also considering yesterday was a lot of excitement for her too and she spent a lot of time with others taking care of her.
With Cara on one arm and another arm wrapped around Sam, Jake comes sauntering over to me sat on the blanket which I had spread out for Cara and me.
"Hey, thanks mate. I hope everything was fine", Jake directs to me.
"Sure, besides that your daughter has her mum's stubborn mind and wanted to either skateboard or get into the fountain all day", I laugh.
Jake shakes his head, but joins in laughing. "Well don't I know too well how that can be", and his eyes dart down to his both girls.
"That's mummy's girl", Sam praises with a heart-warming smile, while caressing Cara's cheeks affectionately. "Did you at least win?"
"Of course that would be your question", I interject while shaking my head.
"Only teaching her right from the start, it's good to win against guys and not to be intimidated", she smirks. "Anyway, thanks for taking her. From Emi I've heard, you've had her since breakfast."
"You know, I love taking her. So no worries."
"Yeah, it might have been worth it. Next year you might get to watch two of them, after last night I think that's very well possible. If not, I'll make sure to achieve it during our honeymoon", Jake says boldly while smirking down at his wife and giving her a wink.
Sam nudges him hard. "Yeah, way to tell everyone how busy we've been."
"Come on Sam, it's not like that would be anything new to me", I give her a wink. When they disappeared in between yesterday, I did feel a stab. But jeez this is Sam and Jake we're talking about, I knew they'd be at it all night.
"Good on ya, mate", I laugh instead of letting that slight pain sink in and pat Jake on his back.
All of us sit together for another one and half hours on the patio together, eating some cake left overs and talk about the wedding, simply having fun together, before Jake and Sam leave for their honeymoon.
Once Cara is seated, Sam pulls first Emi and then me once more to her embrace. "You enjoy your time, you hear me? I don't know anyone who deserves it more."
"Thanks Evans, you're the best", with those words I simply think to myself; but sadly not the best for you.
Jake pats my back, with a knowing look on his face. "She's mine, but some day Evans....", he tells me with trailing off, once Sam can't hear us anymore.
Watching them drive away, I feel so biased. Happy for my best friends and yet hurt.
How the fuck do I get this under control?
A/N: I know this is still very close to Oxford Boys and you're perhaps wondering; where's Evans Story?
But I promise it's all there. This is part of Evans and it was already hinted in the last book. Evans adores Cara.
