Chapter 1
"Is she alive?" A voice asked.
"It looks like it. She's definitely breathing, but she's still weak," A deeper voice replied. "It's a pity her littermates died."
"Will we keep her?" The first voice asked again.
The second cat snorted. "What do you expect? Do you think we're just going to leave her here?"
The first cat shrunk in embarrassment. "Sorry, Stormstar."
Stormstar looked down at the little kit. "It's a good thing Oakflower just gave birth, she can probably take one more kit in. Dappledleaf, can you bury her brother and sister? I need to take her back to camp."
"Alright." Dappledleaf nodded and started to sniff around, looking for a good spot to bury the dead kittens.
The she-kit let out a squeak as Stormstar picked up the small scrap of fur and headed back towards the Creekclan camp at a quick pace.
"What's this?" Oakflower asked curiously. "Another kit?"
Stormstar nodded. "We found her at the border. She had littermates, but.. they were dead. Until we figure out who she is and where she came from, do you mind sharing your milk?"
Oakflower nodded, inspecting the small scrap of fur as she pulled the kit closer. "Poor thing." Oakflower pushed her two kits, Pearlkit and Thornkit, towards the left to make room for the newcomer.
The kit gradually started to suckle. "She looks quite healthy." Oakflower commented. "I'm sure Pearlkit and Thornkit will be happy to have a new littermate!"
Stormstar nodded. "I'll have Puddlesplash check on her after she's fed," he paused. "Also, we should name her."
Oakflower stroked her kits with her tail. "From her brown fur and heart shaped face.. how about Owlkit?" She suggested.
Stormstar nodded. "I like it. Thank you, Oakflower. I really appreciate it," he smiled at Oakflower. "I'll get Puddlesplash in here."
The small medicine cat entered the nursery, her gray fur brushing against the entrance. "Hello, Oakflower. How may I help you?"
Oakflower motioned to Owlkit. "Stormstar and Dappledleaf found her at the border, her littermates were already dead." Oakflower frowned. "So, we'd appreciate it if you checked on her."
Puddlesplash nodded, and picked Owlkit up gently by the scruff. She gently nosed Owlkit around, then stood back up. "She seems good to me," Puddlesplash smiled. "She's a strong one. What's her name?"
"Owlkit!" Oakflower responded as Puddlesplash pushed Owlkit back to Oakflower's stomach.
Pearlkit mewled in protest as she got pushed away, and Oakflower pulled her back.
"Thank you." She purred to Puddlesplash and curled her tail around the kits protectively.
Puddlesplash nodded politely before exiting the nursery.
Something prodded Owlkit's side and she let out a mew of protest. "Come on, wake up!" Thornkit said, poking Owlkit again.
"Yeah, Owlkit!" Pearlkit squealed. "Let's go play!"
Owlkit opened her big eyes sleepily. Ah, she thought. I was just having a good dream. "Coming..." She muttered as she heaved herself onto her paws.
The kits were now 3 moons old, and they were as lively as could be.
"Sandkit and Deerkit were going to show us some battle moves, remember?" Thornkit exclaimed.
Owlkit shook her fur and stretched briefly. "Okay, I'm ready!" She purred.
Pearlkit was already scampering off, and Owlkit followed her, her little legs running as fast as they could to catch up.
"Wait for me!" Thornkit wailed as the three ran out of the nursery, welcomed by warm sunshine.
Owlkit looked everywhere, searching for Deerkit and Sandkit. As she did so, she accidentally bumped into a white cat, and she squeaked, falling onto her bottom. "I-I'm sorry!"
"Watch where you're going!" The tom, named Blizzardtuft, snapped in response.
Owlkit's eyes widened as she stood back up and backed away slowly, fear creeping up her spine from the tom's rude manner.
"It was an accident!" She added.
Blizzardtuft simply shook his head and flicked his tail, padding off without saying another word.
"Hurry up, Owlkit!" Owlkit's attention snapped back to her littermates and she continued on her way.
"Hey!" Sandkit smiled. "We promised we'd teach you some battle moves, so I guess we'll do it. Wolfpaw showed us a few days back!"
"What?" Deerkit sniffled. "I'm not teaching Owlkit. She's a rogue!"
The three kits had found Deerkit and Sandkit, but Deer wasn't going to teach Owlkit, born a rogue, any battle moves.
"Be nice!" Sandkit muttered, cuffing Deerkit's ears.
Owlkit flattened her ears. But it's not my fault that I was born a rogue! She thought as Deerkit bared her teeth at her and Sandkit.
"Fine!" Pearlkit scoffed. "If you're not teaching my sister, you're not teaching any of us."
Deerkit rolled her amber eyes, her tail swishing. "That's fine with me." She retorted. "besides, I don't want to be teaching a bunch of mouse-brains." She added and walked away, her head high.
Sandkit kept glaring at Deerkit as she walked away, then turning to the younger kits. "Don't mind her." Sandkit licked Owlkit's head comfortingly. "She's just.. mean. Extremely mean."
Owlkit nodded slightly, though sadness and fear was still bubbling inside of her.
Thornkit nudged Owlkit. "Hey, it's ok!" She turned back towards Sandkit. "So, how about those battle moves?"
(A/N: Poor Owlkit. I'll try to update soon, I'm still figuring out details for the plot so I apologize for late updates. Remember to vote on my art book!)
