Once upon a time,
In the later hours of the night.
There was a mild shuffle of feet outside my window, I opened my left eye to peek, lo and behold.
A shadow could be seen outside my window. A hoe, a cutlass and a shovel, he scraped the snow that heaped by the side of my house.
'Scrape,' 'scrape,' 'scrape.' He scraped till he had enough room to get to the door.
'Bang!' He rammed his body into the door till it gave way.
Climbing down from the bed, I grabbed the bedside lamp as it was the closest weapon.
Scared and horrified, not knowing what could happen next, I tiptoed to the door of my room.
Coming out of my room, I made my way into the hallway and silently climbed down the stairs.
There was no light, but the dim reflection of the moon from the window in the sitting room was bright enough for me to see the doorknob turn.
My heart left my chest.
I was scared and horrified. I held tightly onto the lamp watching him and eagerly waiting for him to come close so I could smash the lamp on him.
To my surprise, he made a sharp turn from the living room into the kitchen. I followed behind him at a safe distance, closely watching him.
My breathing escalated with every step I took. What did he want? Why was he here? I kept following and made sure to be as quiet as possible.
Thankfully, the light in the kitchen made it easy for me to see him. Gradually, I could make out his features.
He walked into the kitchen and started opening the pots, the refrigerator, and the cabinet looking for what was known to him alone while I hid at a corner still holding my lamp tight and watching him closely.
I got close enough and lifted the lamp to hit his head.
"Bang." I heard the sound of a banger and the person turned.
"Happy Birthday Best Friend," John said as I caught a full view of his face.
