Ana Amari- Tea (a)
She sat peacefully across from you, nibbling on her walnut cake as the kettle boiled over the hob. A delicate whistle signified that the water was ready, Ana went to stand up to make the drinks.
"Don't worry, I'll make them. You did bring the cake and the tea after all!" She sat back down and continued to take small and dainty bites from the moist cake, it's aroma filling the air with a spiced scent.
"That is very kind of you dear." She brushed crumbs off the floral doily with her gloved hand into her other hand.
"Ana, do you take sugar in your tea?" You asked, putting two large spoons into your own cup, which already housed a teabag. The grey-haired woman shot a furious glare at you from across the kitchen, and slowly placed her forkful of cake back onto the plate without breaking eye contact, you threw the spoon into the washing up bowl.
"What was that dear?" Her left eye began to ever so slightly twitch.
"Oh... I just asked if you...take... sugar in your tea?" A sheepish laugh and an awkward smile appeared.
"No dear... I don't take sugar in my tea."
"Well... how milky do you want your tea?" The eye twitch grew stronger.
"No milk, honey. Just... pour the tea into the cup." She still had not stopped her terrifying stare, who had thought that the sweet old lady that lived across the road could be so scary over tea.
"Where are your spoons?"
"Just in that draw by your hip love." You turned around, hoping she had gone back to eating cake but she was still staring, her face still twitching.
The draw opened to reveal a tray full of cutlery that you would expect to find in an old lady's house. You picked one that looked at least semi modern and plonked it into your cup, you gently poured in a small amount of milk and began to stir, making sure that all the flavours had infused before taking the teabag out and placing it into an open bin. You tapped the spoon gingerly on the edge of your cup before moving onto Ana's cup. You stirred it the same as you did yours, taking the teabag out and placing it into the bin. You turned around holding both cups to see her face twitching so much it was practically jumping around.
"Did... did you just... use the same spoon for both cups of tea?"
"Uumm... yeah? I thought I would save you some washing up." She buried her face deeply into her hands.
"Just tip them down the sink, let me do it."
