Twirling his pencil between his fingers, Sam's chin rested on top of his palm as the teacher ranted. The school air was filled with nothing but fatigue and boredom, not a single soul paying attention to the agitated teacher. Every student could care less about their surroundings, grades, and attitude. If everyone was honest, they'd probably say they'd rather die than stay at school for any longer.

"In all my years of teaching, I've never had a group of students so obnoxious as you!" Mrs. Chorn exclaimed, disappointment written all over her features. Sam rolled his eyes, knowing damn well that the teacher had worse at least once before. In all honesty, Sam could care less, not bothering to take a single word of hers into consideration as he knew it wouldn't affect him in any way. "One day you will all understand how important it is to be polite! It's not as hard as you make it seem." She lectured, pointing fingers.

Again, Sam could care less. As the teacher blabbered on, Sam couldn't help but let his mind wander toward his brunette best friend, Colby Brock. It was so boring without him, especially being in school without him. If they were in the same class, life would be more colorful, with less of this negative energy roaming around the room until they saw each other once again.

Suddenly, the bell rang, scaring Sam as his body jolted and head shot up. A small smile made it's way onto Sam's face as he realized it was lunch, which gave him about twenty minutes to be in the presence of his other half. He gathered all of his things in a rush and sped out the door, rushing to his locker.

Busting open the lock, Sam stuffed all of his binders and textbooks on the shelf, not caring about organization as he just wanted to see Colby. He shut his locker and locked it before speeding toward the cafeteria where he and Colby usually met up, unless it was outside on the bleachers near the football field; It depended on the day, sometimes they'd plan on going outside, sometimes they'd plan on staying in.

Pushing open the doors to the cafeteria, Sam walked in as people crowded certain tables, making it more difficult to find the younger. On his journey to find Colby, he bumped into some people accidentally, muttering apologies as his main focus wasn't on the fakes, only on his best friend who's been by his side through thick and thin.

"Sam!" A familiar voice called out, making Sam's gaze instantly look toward the area where the voice was located. With a smile on his voice, Colby stood near a table with their other friends, Nate and Alex, with his hand up high to make it easier for Sam. A huge grin appeared on Sam's face as he rushed over to the table.

"Hey, dude!" Sam greeted with a genuine smile on his face, sitting down beside the brunette as Nate and Alex showed each other their most liked Twitter posts--and trust me, their most liked were at a maximum of thirty likes.

"Hey, bro, how was Science?" Colby asked, a smirk plastered onto his face as Sam groaned. Colby knew Sam hated science, and to make matters worse, the teacher was an absolute ass at teaching.

"Oh my god, bro! Don't even get me started!" Sam exclaimed, annoyed at the memory of the teacher lecturing them because someone asked to use the bathroom.

Colby nudged his smile with a grin, "C'mon, dude, I wanna know what goes on in that annoying class!" He said, taunting the blonde a little. The small action made a smile appear on Sam's face as he nodded in understanding, taking a deep breath.

"Okay, so, basically, you know... uhm, what's her name? Oh! Alexandra, yeah, well she asked to use the bathroom and the teacher started lecturing us about being polite! Dude, it was so fucking stupid!" Sam ranted, his hands moving in over-exaggerated actions. Colby smiled in affection, finding little moments like these so precious because of how little time they had together.

"And?..." Colby gestured for him to go on, dragging out the 'd'. Sam huffed, smiling at Colby as he enjoyed when someone listened; As for many people, they didn't have people that would actually listen to them and take it into consideration. But for Sam, Colby was always there to listen or comfort, same for Sam always being there for Colby.

"And she spent the whole class doing this! Dude, she's basically forcing us to take our projects home since we have to hand it in tomorrow! Sometimes I just wish school didn't exist, man." Sam said with a sigh, making Colby chuckle and pat Sam on the back lightly.

"Hey, at least you didn't have math! Bro, Mrs. L literally forced us to do multiple questions of Algebra the whole fucking class! I mean, I bet multiple would rather die than-"

The sound of a distant scream rang through the halls, the sound of a shot running through. Colby's eyes instantly looked over toward the door, and it felt like time was going in slow motion as he saw multiple people running and screaming into the cafeteria. "S-Sam?-" Colby was cut off by a gasp as he felt Sam grab his wrist, dragging him out of his seat and toward the opposite doors that everyone came running into.

Sam didn't speak, too scared to say anything as he was focused on getting himself and Colby to safety. More shots went off behind them as multiple screams erupted, Sam ignoring them as he concentrated on protecting Colby, keeping him safe. "Sam! What about Nate and Alex?!" Colby whisper-yelled, worried about his other friends.

"They'll be fine, trust me! I-I just need to get you to safety, Colby." Sam cried, images of watching Colby's lifeless body fall to the ground in front of him, images of Colby getting shot beside him. He couldn't live without him.

He'd rather die first.

Pushing the door open into the nearest empty classroom, Sam threw himself and Colby inside and shut the door, locking it. Both boys heaved and panted as multiple shots rang out, Colby's body shaking like a leaf. Sam noticed, instantly tackling Colby into a hug.

"It's gonna be okay, we're gonna get out of here!" Sam reassured, even though he wasn't sure of such things. Screams and pain-filled shouts were muffled behind the door as Colby tugged on Sam's shirt for comfort, overly scared.

"Y-Yeah, you're right... let's barricade the door." Colby said, letting go of Sam and instantly moving toward the desks that were sitting in their usual spots. Sam nodded anxiously, helping Colby pick them up and place them in front of the door. They repeated the process, making sure each little crease was covered, so if anything, they had enough time to break the windows before the predator got close.

More shots, screams, shouts, sobs, and multiple noises that were negative soared through the halls and through the door, loud enough for both best friends to hear. They covered it up completely, both of them going behind the teacher's desk and ducking in the corner. Colby laid his head on Sam's shoulder, trying to contain his tears--he didn't want to cry in his last moments.

"S-Sam... if we don't make it, I just want you to know how much I love you and how thankful I am to be here with you," Colby whispered, his head lifting up to look at Sam as tears still pricked at his eyes. Sam noticed his glossy eyes and instantly felt his own eyes start to gloss up, a sad smile on his face.

"I love you too, Colby, god, I love you so much-"

Suddenly, banging was heard on the door, Colby whimpering and cowering into Sam. "No, no, no, no..." Colby whispered, tears falling from his eyes as he clutched Sam's shirt. Instantly, Sam felt the need to protect the younger. Even though he was only a few months older, Sam felt the need to take the role of an overprotective brother. So, he quickly got up from under the desk. A hand caught his wrist as he was met with scared, tear-filled eyes; The same blue eyes that belonged to Colby.

"What are you doing?.." The banging was continuous, making Colby's grip tighten on his wrist. Sam looked down at him sadly, a small smile on his face while tears streamed down.

"I-I need to protect you... Colby, please, don't forget me."

Suddenly, Colby stood up and tackled Sam into a hug. Stuffing his face into Sam's shoulder, he was muffled by it, "You're not going alone..." Colby continued, releasing him from a hug and smiling at him sadly. "Sam and Colby versus the world, right?" He asked, tears still streaming.

Sam felt his heart clench in sadness and also affection as he nodded, pulling Colby into one last hug.

"Sam and Colby versus the world..."

With that they stood together, watching as the door shook even more.

No matter what, they'd stick by each other's side.

Even if it meant death.
